Rolling Stone’s Best Bands on MySpace: Where Was All the Non-Rock?

12/20/06, 4:56 pm EST

MySpace, Rolling StoneOn Friday, all the time spent waiting for those MySpace tracks to buffer finally pays off when we list our Top 25 Bands on MySpace. We can’t reiterate enough how much great music we heard, but one question: Where was the hip-hop, the R&B, the DJs doing Girl Talk-esque things, the blues, electronica, etc, etc. Al these genres were underrepresented. With Clipse and Ghostface among our favorites, we were really looking forward to some next wave of rap to keep us afloat through New Year’s. Yes, this contest is still closed, but let the fact that we’re having this conversation suggest there will be others. While we finalize our Top 25 (Rock) Bands on MySpace list, clue us in to the non-rock acts we have to look forward to.

Oh, and to explore the tracks we thought were cool last week go here. Remember: We’ll name the Top 25 on Friday!

what is rock? the way your magazine interprets music greatly confuses the term anyway. you have debt to pay to corporate sponsors and that in turn changes your and our own definition of rock. what do you include? just people following the mold and happening to include electric guitars? no, even more shameful. You should remember that real rock and roll is revolutionary and that there is new music out there that captures this– however, you guys will keep yourself further on the outside of this by failing to look for what rock and roll is all about– change (which we the people so drastically need right now) and sticking it to these people who are based on phlegmatic images of what rock and roll looks and sounds like.

I agree, most of the bands you have selected have been classifiable to one genre…EXCEPT that Ryan Marks song High Tide. I can’t get it out of my head, as it stands so on its own from the other 24 selected tracks. For its originality alone you should include it on your list.

That’s pretty unfair to the other bands to just change the genre all of a sudden. So I’ve got to ask, what the heck was the point of even having this contest?? Obviously “the best” really means “Rolling Stone’s Opinion.” It’s clear there were many fans hyping up their favorite bands, a lot of which weren’t what you might consider “rock” in today’s music society. That’s cheap Rolling Stone, shame on you.

Stephie - A little confused... | 12/20/2006, 7:14 pm EST

Wow, that’s not cool to change the contest after it’s closed. This whole time it was supposed to be the TOP 25 BANDS ON MYSPACE, period. That’s not fair to now say these are just the best ROCK bands. I’ve listened to several acts people have posted about, and there is no way they are all in the same genre. Just an obervation…

K W | 12/20/2006, 7:24 pm EST

Everyone needs to check out The Minor White, seriously. Somewhere in between electronic/jazz/classical /alte rnative.

Listen. Rolling Stone is obviously one of the largest music magazines in the world. If anyone knows rock and roll it’s them. I don’t honestly care if they have corporate debts to pay or whatever. The plain and simple truth that needs to be understood is that corporations will only back commericaly viable music. It’s not these companies fault that some underground rock band does not have commercial viability. It’s also not RS’s job to cover every band that thinks because they throw back to Marc Bolan that they are the new rock sound. I’d like to hear what people think completely new music sounds like. Seriously everything derivates from something else. Like what do you want? Electric ukes or a woodwind section in a band? The worst criticism points out a problem without offering a solution. My advice: make the music you speak of and make it commercially viable. Simple. I did that and my band is on the list for consideration.
I think that the reason alot of rock showed up is because Rolling Stone is still considered a predominately Rock oriented magazine. Although, in the last twenty or so years they have attempted to win new genres crowds, the main outlet for rap and R&B is still going to be Source or other such publications. Nothing wrong with that.
Overall I’d say take your gripes to an indie forum or start a new rock band with that refreshing sound. No matter what though it will be derivative and someone like yourself will criticise it.

... | 12/20/2006, 10:31 pm EST

“if anyone knows rock n roll it’s them”
nope… probably a better idea is to check the blogs they listed as recommended, that’s where they’re picking up all their good info from. music has shifted into the hands of the people. make your music commercially viable at your own expense.

RS | 12/20/2006, 10:46 pm EST

Too bad there wasn’t more hip hop there are some great acts on MS. As for what was up there I thought this girl was amazing … http://www.myspace.com/mandiperkins

Ranen | 12/20/2006, 10:51 pm EST

What an ignorant outlook. Commerically viable = people like it enough to pay for it. Enough said. Go and invent your new breed of rock and roll and if it’s any good it will be commercially viable by it’s own design. Like seriously RS has one contest and you act like they are desperately seeking the next new thing. I think music is in a sorry state but I would argue it’s because there is not enough time given to develop bands. RS does not control that. I agree I’d love to hear some new band that totally changes culture and art but I’m not holding my breath and bitching on a comment board about it. Why are you even at Rollingstone.com if you think they aren’t doing their job? Makes no sense to me.

Newburgh | 12/20/2006, 11:04 pm EST

I agree with a lot of the comments being made. I love the contest and I have to put in a vote for Stuedabakerbrown. I’m from the same area and truley am a HUGE fan of this band. I hope good things for them.

http://www.myspace.com/stued abakerbrown

To Ranen | 12/20/2006, 11:59 pm EST

You’re missing an essential part of the equation. Publications like Rolling Stone MAKE things commercially viable. Maintream listeners need to be told what to listen to, and most people base their tastes solely on hype and hipness. If Rolling Stone started seriously backing bands they thought were amazing, not just surefire commercial successes, than those underground bands would start affecting the tastes of mainstream music listeners. A band like The Strokes, for example, would not have been “commercial” in the early seventies. But a band like Yes would probably never catch on today. Sounding “commercial” means nothing but “sounds like what’s playing right now on the radio,” and it’ll be a big black hole until mainstream rags start taking bigger risks.

david h. chung | 12/21/2006, 12:33 am EST

i dont think rolling stone is the greatest, but theyve found some good bands that i havent heard for this contest.

the best is ultra sonic edukators.

Brian | 12/21/2006, 1:41 am EST

I think “Long Since Forgotten” was nominated. I recall seeing them on here a few days ago.

I believe that Long Since Forgotten is better than a lot of the bands that I hear on radio today. Their harmonies, lyrics, and straight up rock and roll make them hard to compete with.

If Long Since Forgotten does not make the list, I will be surprised that Rolling Stone was able to overlook such talented artists.

I am in no way affiliated with the band, just a huge fan. I ask that you check them out on myspace. They are as good as they get.

Sam | 12/21/2006, 2:14 am EST

I wouldn’t call Easy Silence your typical rock band with their acoustic-based music. So add them to your top list and you’ll have one rock band less on it. :D

I hope you guys gave a good listen to a band I entered a few days ago called Mirrorsessions.
They are from Australia and they have what a lot of bands this day in age are missing. a good ambiance to go with some killer rock and roll. It’s like modern music like Muse or Radiohead meets the classics like Pink Floyd or 70’s-era Yes. cuz it really is incredible, and i found them on accident, give them a second listen cuz i dont think they have too many fans that pay any attention to RS to advocate for them. but they rock, hard, like i ordered their ep from australia cuz i think they are that good.

I’m glad there are still some ROCK bands out there. Not sure the hip-hop nation reads Rolling Stone.

“real rock and roll is revolutionary”…true, but there is plenty of revolutionary rock that is crap..I say “Real Rock and Roll is Real Rock and Roll” Maybe AC/DC can make this into a song

I think your case is very weak. Rolling Stone covers what it feels is newsworthy music. The Strokes at the time were a new band with a throwback sound. I don’t like them but Rolling Stone didn’t force people to buy their records. Commercial appeal is not a bad thing. We live (in America) in a Capitalist economy where only viable businesses stay in business. It’s not RS’s fault that there was a pardigm shift away from YES style bands to pretty boy rock. They only cover it. No one publication can force people to buy something. New music only succeeds if it get’s in your head and stays there. RS doesn’t write songs or play in a band last time I checked. They are journalists that try to cover new and popular music. There are plenty of zines for people who are interested in niche music genres. I would suggest spending time with them. Personally, I would take the strokes any day over YES. I like neither but I am not going to blame RS for a lame music scene. Blame America’s cultural values and lack of music classes in school.

I’m really digging Archives Of, an Indie/Blues/Powerpop group on MySpace. Here’s the link:

Reminiscent of early Elliott Smith/Flaming Lips meets Sparklehorse, very cool. And I like the lyrics!

Here’s my VOTE – ARCHIVES OF

R.O.B.R.O.Y. – Raps, Sings, Dances…what more do you want? (http://www.myspace.com/robroy )

No i believe Black Gold is the best. And Patrick and Pete?LOL.very hilarious.

Wonker Kid | 1/22/2008, 1:58 pm EST

If you want to have your cake and eat it too you can. Maybe you don’t have to choose between rap, rock, electro, and pop. Some bands pull it off- my personal pick for 08 is G.C. and Soul Mafia- all of the above.
