Bright Eyes’ New Song Makes Us Depressive, Psyched

12/20/06, 12:10 pm EST

Conor OberstIt takes three listens. Every time we hear new Bright Eyes material we listen to it once, immediately determine it’s not as good as the old stuff, listen to it a second time just to be sure, feel slightly less confident in our deduction, then play it a third time and discover a wealth of subtle brilliance. This new Bright Eyes tune, “Endless Entertainment,” which will apparently appear either on the forthcoming full-length Cassadaga or the Four Winds EP, which will precede it, is no exception to this rule.

On first listen it sounds…nice. Pleasant and sunny, but flat. By listen number three you’re hearing deceptively simple lines (”You don’t have to be content, but you do have to get on with it”) tossed off without ceremony between pretty harmonies that belie a sense of subversive depravity that underlies most everything Oberst does. “There’s endless entertainment in thinking the world is gonna end,” he sings cheerfully, “and I live some nights convinced of it but I keep waking up again.” This record comes out in 15 weeks and 6 days.

Give it a fourth listen, you’ll realize everything Bright Eyes has ever done was boring and lame.

Wayne | 12/20/2006, 12:48 pm EST

“Depressive”??? Are you sure???

Which use of the word is intended?
de·pres·sive
–adjective 1. tending to depress.
2. characterized by depression, esp. mental depression.
–noun
3. a person suffering from a depressive illness.

Your use of the word “depressive” belies a sense of subversive depravity that underlies most everything you do, Elizabeth. Which makes me psyched.

Give anything that Elizabeth Goodman writes a quick once-over and you’ll realize that she should be writing for Tiger Beat.

Wayne | 12/20/2006, 1:04 pm EST

Skyline, your comment belies a sense of subversive depravity that underlies most everything you do. Which means I am serrrriously crushing on you.

Dude needs a wedgie.

MrTambourineman | 12/20/2006, 1:50 pm EST

Ms. Goodman, who do you mean when you say “us”? Does the rest of the RS staff know that you include them in your ill-informed and petty journal entries? Stop tricking people into reading your “I’m Holier Than Thou” diary. Refering to yourself as “us” doesn’t magically make your statements important or intelligent.

God i hate bright eyes

slow down cowboy | 12/20/2006, 2:28 pm EST

conor oberst would fuck your girlfriend then write a sad song about it, shut up

kidbrilliant | 12/20/2006, 2:43 pm EST

maybe you ingnorant masses should take a listen to the brilliant “I’m wide awake it’s morning” album or “Noise Floor” before you try and belittle one of the best songwriters of this generation. when you were 14, I’m sure you weren’t cofounding bands with the likes of Tim Kasher and Ted Stevens, but rather you were most likely masturbating in your bedrooms.

crazydiamond | 12/20/2006, 2:49 pm EST

music is not entirely music without the lyrics. Bright Eyes is one of the most influential lyrical artists of all time. before listening to the songs read the lyrics first and try counting how many times you can relate to them.

Oddjob | 12/20/2006, 2:54 pm EST

“when you were 14, I’m sure you weren’t cofounding bands with the likes of Tim Kasher and Ted Stevens”

WOW, name-dropping two nobodies, who nobody gives a shit about! That put me in my place.

PS- Bright Eyes is SO lame.

bleach | 12/20/2006, 2:58 pm EST

elizabeth goodman, i just read one of your Bob Dylan articles and you make me want to burn my eyes with bleach. jsdgh.asdkjfghlaf. stop writing. just stop. you bring shame to these articles that could have been written better by someone else. STOP THE MADNESS.

scott | 12/20/2006, 3:02 pm EST

Okay first off, whoever made that comment about Bob Dylan being nothing more than 3 chords and incoherant babble: if you can name another artist who has been as influential and written brilliant lyrics for 40+ years, go ahead. Until then, shut up.
Sure, Bright Eyes isn’t for everyone; his focus is more on lyrics than music, which doesn’t fit a lot of people’s taste. But you have to admit that his lyrics are always very good, occasionally bordering on brilliant.
Oh, and while I’ll be the first to say that Elizabeth Goodman is, at best, a subpar writer, but going on rants like those just make you look stupid, and if anyone at Rolling Stone reads these things, you’re not helping your cause.

fuji rock | 12/20/2006, 5:09 pm EST

elizabeth goodmans writing makes me sick. it makes me cringe.

Other Dan | 12/20/2006, 5:43 pm EST

Other Dan | 12/20/2006, 5:44 pm EST

Then he could write a sad song about the wedgie.

GetLonely | 12/20/2006, 6:31 pm EST

I’ll agree that some of bob dylan’s song’s seem to be nothing but babble.I was very let down at his concert this summer.Townes van zandt was 100 times the songwriter dylan is.Dylan is hyped way too much!

GetLonely | 12/20/2006, 6:35 pm EST

Bright Eyes is alright, but again the hype takes hold.John Darnielle from the mountain goats write’s way better than oberst by a long shot. It’s all relative opinion.

dan | 12/20/2006, 8:08 pm EST

I like it, and I know I’ll like it more eventually. When I first heard Bright Eyes about three years, I hated it. But I bought “I’m Wide Awake…” anyway. Again, i didn’t like it. But it slowly became one of my all time favorite albums. Often the albums we end up loving the most aren’t the ones we love immediately. So don’t dismiss Bright Eyes unless you’ve given the music some considerable time to sink in. Great song!

kuper | 12/20/2006, 10:22 pm EST

it’s amazing how people will say a song is great when in reality is ok at best.

Brian Fantana | 12/21/2006, 12:40 am EST

lolz omg rolling stone dont you want to bash him 4 being 2 em0?!?!

Ash | 12/21/2006, 8:51 am EST

It’s sad when I think about Bright Eyes, because you always wonder if the genius will ever end.

Madonna | 12/21/2006, 11:09 am EST

Connor is a spoiled brat. I went to the same expensive catholic high school he did in Omaha Nebraska. He lived a privilleged affluent life. Hes a total poser. And gay.

Nita | 12/22/2006, 4:51 am EST

It’s fantastic, can’t wait for the new record. Seriously, give him a chance people.

English | 12/26/2006, 9:17 am EST

I think with Bright Eyes you got to take into account the amount of material he has produced- theres a lot so some of its gonna be bad but on the whole hes immense. But for those slagging off Dylan, you lot who dont appreciate him can go listen to ‘Dreamtheatre’ or whatever crap interests you.
and oh yeah,
Who’s Elizabeth Goodman?!?!

Barnge | 1/1/2007, 5:27 pm EST

this has got to be the most frustrating message board i have ever seen. the internet is a mind field.

POET | 1/23/2007, 8:00 pm EST

For the readers I would like to add to the comments of Elizabeth Goodman regarding Bright Eyes.

OK Rolling Stone, pay attention (future staff writer here). People need to understand that there is a huge difference between and artist and a singer. Bright Eyes is on the list of those many musical artists to whom we are attached like a mother to a newborn. Much like painted art, you can’t just go with your first impression. You have to stare at a painting for a while; walk away from it and come back to it and see how it, if at all, can apply to your past, present or future. See, musical artists base their music, for the most part, on the human soul, which is why we can relate in some way to music made by these artists. The real problem is not the artist who makes the song, it is the listener who hears the song. We as listeners have been used to listening to all the quality garbage that the industry puts out – songs that mean nothing at all, with no depth. All you need is one quick listen to get it and you’re left with nothing more than a good beat or rhythm that moves your behind but does nothing for the soul. So in his defense, there is nothing wrong with Bright Eyes and his music. There is a whole lot wrong with us. We have to learn to set the singers apart from the artists and the quality garbage from the music that helps us along on our life’s journey.

Quote: Music artists are perfected masters of their craft, and are always on a constant quest to evolve, whereas singers just got lucky and some stay lucky.
