Rolling Stone’s Best Bands on MySpace: Who Did We Forget?

12/19/06, 3:18 pm EST

Rolling StoneOn Friday, we finally announce our Top 25 Bands on MySpace list. Just because we named 25 bands last week, there’s no telling how many of those bands will carry over to the final list. Throughout this contest, the fans have given us fire. Whether it was your support of acts we didn’t yet name or bands we hadn’t yet heard, you guys have been great. So we’re all ears again. We want you to tell us which bands (that we haven’t recognized already!) should be on the Top 25 list. You harassed us with MySpace messages and spammed us with misplaced blog comments. Here is the forum to say your peace. Tell us who we should consider in the final hours before we make our decision. You can help turn the tide. Get to work!

>> Check out songs we thought were cool last week. Like we say, no telling if any or all will make the Top 25.

definetly the very best unknown singer songwriter that I have personaly heard is DWAYNE SMITH(also known as SHANNON) at http://www.myspace.com/dway nesmi thmus ic .
its like classic-alternative- folk- rock- pop-singer/songwriter stuff; unfortunatley its not produced- just demos

Dude | 12/19/2006, 3:37 pm EST

This is a band I heard a few weeks ago and they are hands down my favorite of any artist I’ve heard on myspace:

BRYAN SCARY is the best pop songwriter I’ve heard in years. You guys may not have his whole album, but it’s amazing. He would be a sweet choice for this list, because he’s just weird enough to make you look like you’re not playing it safe, but still working in a classicist pop vein…

Geffen | 12/19/2006, 4:10 pm EST

The two bands that stood out most for me were the Sour Mash Bandits [http://myspace.com/sourmash] for an alt-country fix and Molly Venter [http://myspace.com/molly vente r] for singer-songwriter. Both of them were blogged about incorrectly in the first Rock and Roll Daily contest post. The funny thing is, if they had been posted correctly on myspace to begin with instead of at rollingstone.com, I probably would have missed them. Following rules is so un-Rock ‘N Roll…

Five Times August’s song Better With You should win. FTA is an amazing solo project that’s ran by ONE guy, with no major or indie label, no management company, completely unsigned to anything! He deserves to be recognized by Rolling Stone!!

This is a new band I saw someone mention yesterday. I saw them at a local dive not long ago … the songs are great. Two brothers and a sister, I think.

They don’t have much posted in the way of real recordings, but when they get on a label and in a studio … watch out.

Fives Times August “Better With You” gets my vote for its unique melody and lyrics to match. FTA is an amazing singer/songwriter/musician. I have had the pleasure of seeing him live and encourage anyone with the same opportunity to take advantage. FTA restores my faith that some musicians are still in it for the right reasons.

Finally checked out that five times august and it was drivel. Sounds like everything else I’ve ever heard. And of course the guy has support; he’s in AUSTIN, TX, voted by RS as the #1 music town in the country.

But in all fairness, the tripe that succeeds in Dallas sounds just like this guy. Does everyone feel the need to be so obvious?

Well hands down the best and most creative band on myspace would have to be Archives Of…a brilliant band out of L.A. who should be in the dark to the masses no longer! The song “A Diamond Tail Tale” is a work of art. Musically mastered and structured beautifully with a great blend of catchiness while retaining unfaltering musical harmony between the instruments and vocals. Truly a band that stands out from the rest of the herd. Hear and be amazed!

Better With You by Five Times August. As soon as I was given the cd to listen too this song IMMEDIATELY jumps out at you within the first 30 seconds. Then you actually take the time to listen to all the tracks and there’s just a natural flow to every song that seems simple enough, but yet it’s just not done by most artists. Amazing live performer who has put himself together the right way in this crazy music biz where integrity is usually lacking.

JohnIsHere96 | 12/19/2006, 6:22 pm EST

I have actually been following “Five Times August” for over 5 years. He’s not even from Austin, he just moved there less than a year ago. And, I checked his past shows, and out of 68 last year, 7 were in Austin…the majority of his shows were out of Texas. So clearly he has a nationwide fanbase; I’m from Philly. And by the way, there’s no need to put people down on here. Just say who you like. And I like FTA’s “Better with You.”

stem | 12/19/2006, 6:27 pm EST

I think ‘Family Friend’ by Black Cassette is better than anything on Stadium Arcadium by RHCP – your nr. 2 record of the year. Prove me wrong. Regards.

Raymond S. Pieinnersky | 12/19/2006, 6:36 pm EST

At the beginning of “Growing Still’s” second verse, Ash Valley’s singer, Andy Ampersand, informs the object of his serenading that he is a “believer with a mission” & that he’ll “proclaim until [she] listens”.

Let me proclaim that Ash Valley have made a believer out of me! Their music is richly textured & inspiringly confident. I think you folk at Rolling Stone would be foolish to leave them off your list!

As far as metal goes on MySpace, Bereft of Life are promising up-and-comers. Their fusion of death metal and progressive rock definitely offers a new way to look at a familiar genre. Also, they stand out amongst all the indie rock bands. They nominated the song “S.O.S.,” but their song “Political Cyst” addresses the war, which makes them a very relevant band.

And last but not least, they rock.

Mikey | 12/19/2006, 8:45 pm EST

4 brothers, rock, harmonies, perfection.

“Well Farewell” is a perfect 3 minute pop rock song and “The March” is one of the most rocking anti-war songs I’ve heard in a while. Completely Massive!!! Give them a listen and I promise you will agree!!!

Vics | 12/19/2006, 9:41 pm EST

Five times august – I’m from aus and as far as music goes, we hear everything about 3 months later than most countries. So when i came across “better with you” i was amazed that i hadnt heard about it via international music charts.
Anyway, i love brad’s music, his style, and most of the time he puts in to his myspace and the fans, he actually replies to fans.
I’ve just started learning guitar only so i can learn to play “better with you” (and i ordered the guitar tab book from his website – i suggest if u like acoustic u do the same)

Daniel | 12/19/2006, 9:42 pm EST

Matt Williams has some rare talent that is purely him and reaches out and touches thouse who listen to him. He is a fantastic musician and guy!
GO MATT!

Zuko | 12/19/2006, 9:44 pm EST

You should listen to his music to know what I’m saying. This guy is an artist, a great musician, great creativity and I promise that with a little bit of more support he would be huge. I’m thinking that he could be very popular among people who likes a romantic walk around the park, or looking at sunsets…or maybe just sitting in a cofee shop watching the people walking by. What I want to say is that he is awesome.

They worked really hard to produced the best of songs. im really proud of them! especially they have been to Japan to perform. that is a achievement for a Malaysian band like them. to share their music somewhere else. :)

Matt Williams deserves this….I wish I could play and sing like him. I love the guy, I’ve only heard some of his stuff on myspace, but i gotta download it because I’m on there constantly so I can listen to him. If you haven’t listened, give him a shot. I found him through the Jeff Buckley page I think, and if you have any interest at all (or even if you don’t) give Matt a try!

david | 12/19/2006, 11:02 pm EST

alunared is the best myspace band allthough they broke up a couple years back. they were one of the most original indie rock bands at the time where indie was still indie and not the new catch phrase.
making records and touring in shitty vans with little or no hope of every seeing any type of real press.
their live shows were a combination of sonic destruction and complete chaos.
and then it just blew apart at the seams .

Hana | 12/19/2006, 11:02 pm EST

http://WWW.MYSPACE.COM/MARTIEPETERS GROUP
It’s the perfect testimonial to the band’s new direction and sound…Hard rock with a modern twist!

THE MARTIE PETERS GROUP is full of memorable melodies with blistering guitar riffs and catchy choruses. A surprising combination of radio friendly sing along songs, hard rocking anthems, alternative modern rockers and sensitive and poignant ballads. Songs about life, love, loss and healing.

The new MARTIE PETERS GROUP CD, “Road To Salvation” is scheduled for release in March 2007 through NL Distribution. Produced by Martie Peters and mixed by veteran producer Tommy Hansen.

LUDGER!!! He is such a unique talent he needed a new term to descibe his sound – “World Rock”. LUDGER is the cream of a very tasty Quebec crop. I can’t get “Moshpit” out of my head!!

I highly recommend giving second listens to “Locked Box” by Frankie Big Face and “Every Day of the Week” by Brother Machine if you haven’t already done so. Both are fairly solid tracks. Enjoyable, even if they aren’t worthy of the top 25.

ROCK!

"Iron" Mike | 12/20/2006, 12:25 am EST

Many of American music fans have no clue how good bands are outside of the states. If they’d explore they’d find in the rock ranks a band called POP SHUVIT in Malaysia that can easily break it big in America. They have it all musically and live they are the real deal. Not comparing it to the invasion of Loudness from Japan in the 80’s 90’s but no one has cracked America since then and NOW is the time for POP SHUVIT to reach our shores in Press and touring!!

sara | 12/20/2006, 12:32 am EST

I’m a new comer to this board and I never heard any music from any of these groups before today. Although each group mentioned has a lot of talent, the group which I dig the most is the alex rubin project. Although the group is not recorded as well as some of the other groups listed, I was really only moved by their songs, especially “dorothy”. The Chris Difford connection doesn’t hurt, I’m huge squeeze fan!! My vote is for the Alex Rubin Project- I hope they make it!

ALEX RUBIN PROJECT | 12/20/2006, 12:33 am EST

Euphoric tunes with appealing chord progressions. The music is soft ear candy and many can relate to their past through the song with their attention still entact into the music. The mechaincal virtuoistity of the guitar is subtle but noticed as the vocals are brought to the forefront with unparalled expertise.

Lauren | 12/20/2006, 12:36 am EST

It’s a reality that, in the music recording & selling industry, acts come & go. I believe it’s because most acts cook up one wonderful single & have no idea what to do after that.

Ash Valley are different. They’re here for the long haul. A career act. NOT TO BE MISSED (or left off Rolling Stone’s list)!

s.pillai | 12/20/2006, 5:22 am EST

‘i wanna be a cover of Rolling Stone..’

the above quote was taken from the first verse of their track called ‘Wannabe’. It proves they already picture themselves to be in a cover of Rolling Stone waaaaay before the contest was even created.

Pop Shuvit, made in Malaysia.. rock for the World. Their music had brought Malaysian music into the next level. Although being enormous in Malaysia and Japan [its a fact, they are BIGGER than Linkin Park in Japan], they are still sincere with their tunes. They strived for glory using a hard way, the most hard-working band I ever see. Very passionate in their music indeed, they gave a spark of inspiration towards other indipendant bands in Malaysia. I believe they desserve to be in the cover of Rolling Stone as they’ll set the world rock music scene on fire! Pump Up The Stereo!!!

I am a music junkie, thus I listen to a ton of music varying in numerous genres, but overall I’d have to say that Miniature Tigers is my favorite musical artist. I fell in love immediately, much like everyone else does once they hear the harmonious brilliance of maestro Charlie Brand (frontman). There’s so much talent and heart present in all of his songs that it’s unbelievable, not to mention his voice is highly captivating and pleasant in like manner of Ben Gibbard’s [Death Cab For Cutie]. I think it’s inevitable that this band will catch itself a ride and make it big sometime, but I’m hoping that time comes a lot sooner than later. So, along with the band, do yourself a huge favor and check ‘em out: http://www.MySpace.com/MiniatureTiger s

AMY AARON is an amazing singer/songwriter and the only reason why she doesn’t have lots of votes is because she DOESN’T HOUND her FAN to vote for these things. But maybe she should! So, if you’re a fan VOTE for HER!!!
myspace.com/amyaaronsmusic

Jordan | 12/20/2006, 9:46 pm EST

Okay I agree with that. It gets a little old reading bulletins about voting! I admit I don’t do it, and the ones I like never win! so my vote is for AMY AARON. She’s got a great voice and she’s beautiful. The whole package!

Sherry | 12/20/2006, 9:49 pm EST

I just saw Amy Aaron live. She was awesome. She is a great singer live. She was so nice after the show too. She really took time to talk to anyone who wanted and didn’t push her merchandise on everyone! So, I understand why she doesn’t bombard her myspace friends with VOTE REQUESTS! SHE SHOULD!!!

AMY AARON – Hands down!!!

Matt C. | 12/20/2006, 9:53 pm EST

I dig the other guys on the list, but there’s no way that many people are just voting on their own for these guys. Bulletins, etc. So, come on people, if you’ve heard AMY AARON, vote for her and if you haven’t go listen. She’s so good.

Amy Aaron has my vote. I hope you people at RS get it!

YVES | 12/20/2006, 9:59 pm EST

I asked AMY AARON for a download and she send it to me no problem! So nice!

Karen Jenkins | 12/20/2006, 10:02 pm EST

Maybe it’s not about “hounding”, but about how many fans some of these bands actually have. I mean, someone with 15,000 listens a day is GOING to get a lot more votes than someone with 50. It’s simple math, not “hounding.”
This isn’t the place to put other people down for being popular. Besides, if the fans felt hounded, they would ignore it and not do it.

There is something to be said about a band that involves excitment with whismy. I have listened to a lot of independent music and I have never heard anything just like this. In a world where band after band replicates each other again and again it is certainly refreshing to hear something like Diamond Tail Tale. A new comtemporary to brave bands such as Of Montreal and Architecture In Helsinki, Archives OF is a golden band fresh from the nest and spreading it’s glorious wingspan across a veritable smorgas-board of catchy songs.

Corey W. | 12/21/2006, 1:32 am EST

Daniel Nouguier gets my vote, because he is just as good live as he is on his album. Also, just to keep it in Fayetteville, AR. check out Matt Jones too.

Jayce | 12/21/2006, 2:11 am EST

Hands down, the most worth while band on myspace is none other than Archives Of! They have abandoned pop norms to make way toward innovative, experimental territory. The song writing and arrangement is simply genius! As is the female and male vocal performances.
The lyrical phrasing is surrealisticly poetic and the structure reminiscent of Queen.
I love all their songs and can’t wait to buy the album, I KNOW others will feel the same.

I really think that Pop Shuvit deserves being in the top 25. They represent Asia with a diverse music background and should be heard. Its not always you find a band that has musical influences from everywhere. Anyway, their song rawks….really bumpin my head to their new songs….

Derek H. | 12/22/2006, 1:16 am EST

There are several great musical talents on myspace, but my favorite would have to be Daniel Nouguier, from Fayetteville, AR. He’s has burst on to the scene is a big way, already grabbing the attention of major recording artists, and getting the opportunity to perform with them. On Feb. 1st, he will be opening for John Mayer here in Fayetteville. You know he has to be good to get the chance to play with a god of the music world. Give him a chance, you won’t be disappointed.

Maerlyn6 | 12/22/2006, 1:23 am EST

Analog Missionary, without a doubt. They have a unique sound and their lead vocalist sings like an angel! Doesn’t hurt that she’s gorgeous either, lol, but really I would DEFINITELY recommend that more people check them out.

Rarely does a band emerge during trying times in order to motivate and express the heartfelt sorrows and jubilations of its listeners. Lets join together and pray that the Art of Chaos quartet is among the many that grabs the attention of the forums, the corporations and the independent record labels, so they can bring their message across America, the continent and the World alike.

I urge you to the fullest extent of my being to place Art of Chaos within the [Rolling Stone] Top-25 Bands on MySpace.

“Alright” is an example of their lyrical and musical talents, both heartfelt and wise. The music is full of adrenaline for everyone to relate to, or just plain enjoy. From 14-year-olds to 40-year-olds. From the teen, angst-ridden generation, all the way up to the mid-life crisis generation; the Art of Chaos has something for everyone. Definitely chock full of potential. Let us not brush them under the rug.

Art of Chaos; it’s not just music, it’s a way for all walks of life to come together and rejoice that their opinions, whether political, social or just plain words of advice, can at long last ring out through these times many feel overlooked, misunderstood and unheard.

Thank you for your time,
