U2 Warm Our Cold, Dark Hearts Once More

12/18/06, 5:40 pm EST

We think this video for U2’s new song “Window in the Skies” is the most sentimental yet ballsy clip we’ve seen in a while. Who besides U2 could appropriate footage of every famous musician — from Sinatra to Elvis to Iggy Pop to Karen O and about 400 others — for their own purposes and end up with something uplifting and tasteful instead of self-congratulatory and distasteful? To Bono we rhapsodize.

Even though we know Elvis isn’t actually singing “oh can’t you see-he-he-heee” in that last black-leather-jacket-featuring frame — but this video makes us feel like he totally meant to.

Which scene is your favorite?

I always knew I saw some kind of laser beams coming from Jimi Hendrix’s guitars. My friends said it was just pot induced nonsense.

did you catch john stirrat from wilco at the 48 scond mark

SATAN | 12/18/2006, 6:56 pm EST

MY FAVORITE SHOT IS FLAVOR FLAV AND PUBLIC ENEMY, WITH THE CLASH SHOTS COMING IN SECOND.

THIS MIGHT BE THE BEST VIDEO I HAVE EVER SEEN. CATCH THE U2 MEMBERS IN THE CROWD AFTER THE HALFWAY POINT UP THROUGH THE END AT VARIOUS POINTS, ANOTHER GREAT SHOT.

those are my boys! love this song and of course u2 totally outdid themselves for the video. love how they’re in the crowd towards the end.

glad to know they warmed your cold dark hearts, RS

jimi hendrix is the coolest…

rachel | 12/18/2006, 11:17 pm EST

i think the hendrix clips are my fav. but billie holliday and david bowie singing the song are pretty damn cool too.

skerr | 12/18/2006, 11:19 pm EST

Seeing the Edge in the crowd at then end was the killer shot of the video, but I’m worried Kanye Jest (Get it? ‘Jest’ because he’s a joke.) might try to accept any award this video might win.

craigers | 12/19/2006, 4:56 am EST

the whole thing made me misty. i love music so much.

agortera | 12/19/2006, 1:23 pm EST

Not only did the video make the hairs on my body stand on end, but this is just a great song. Bravo U2!

ryan | 12/19/2006, 1:25 pm EST

Bonham, and the white stripes were pretty damn cool

88keys | 12/19/2006, 1:59 pm EST

give a shout out to the guy who edited that thang and the army of interns who probably pulled all the clips. nice….

Fred McGriff | 12/19/2006, 2:14 pm EST

horrendously awful song, but pretty darn cool video. was that a flash of the Arcade Fire that I saw?

X-tina | 12/19/2006, 2:26 pm EST

I hate the song but the vid was awesome. I like seeing the band in the audience. I love those Irish lads.

martino | 12/19/2006, 3:15 pm EST

Mark my words, these guys are going to be big one day.

readytorock | 12/19/2006, 3:18 pm EST

Err…usually in these circumstances the credit for the concept of the video goes to the director. But I guess a hack like Goodman doesn’t think it’s worth giving him his due.

SATAN | 12/19/2006, 3:20 pm EST

FRED MCGRIFF=NO HALL OF FAME.

U2=WILL HAVE OWN WING OF HALL OF FAME

WINDOW IN THE SKIES=GOOD, SOLID, U2 SONG. BETTER THAN ANY OF THE CACA “X-TINA” HAS SPEWED FORTH, AND BETTER THAN 95% OF THE SWILL THAT’S BEING SHOVED DOWN OUR MASS-CONSUMER THROATS.

Dan | 12/19/2006, 3:21 pm EST

Amazing video.

The Beatles are conspiciously absent though. They sure are stingy with that copyright crap, huh?

yea | 12/19/2006, 3:58 pm EST

Goodman needs to get off Bono’s dick.

Venezuelan Born | 12/19/2006, 4:23 pm EST

Great video. Should be video of the year.

charliemapleton | 12/19/2006, 6:51 pm EST

Alicia’s,Jay Z’s,Stevie’s,Green Day’s,Beck’s(man can dance incredibly better than Justin)…Phenomenal masterpiece.

mbaby | 12/20/2006, 2:56 pm EST

amazing to think that this band has been doing this for close to 30 years…great song and video.

SATAN | 12/20/2006, 3:35 pm EST

YEA NEEDS TO GET OFF GOODMAN’S TIT. COMMENT ON THE SONG/VIDEO OR STAY OFF.

Dan | 12/21/2006, 2:49 pm EST

Pure brilliance! only a timeless band like u2 can make a timeless video like this. perfection

u2camacho | 1/10/2007, 11:21 am EST
