Rolling Stone’s Best Bands On MySpace: Contest Is Closed!

12/18/06, 1:03 pm EST

Rolling StoneWith approximately 1700 songs, a string of 24-hour listening binges, and a stream of four-letter words for the buffering time of the MySpace music players, the Rolling Stone’s Best Bands on MySpace contest has officially closed to new entries. Thanks to all the bands that submitted tracks and all the fans that came out to support their favorites. MySpace seems to have lived up to its potential as a breeding ground for breaking new music. We’re going to spend the next few days reviewing songs and debating which artists will make our Top 25 Bands on MySpace list, which we’ll reveal this Friday, December 22nd. Until then, this is an open space for last-minute lobbying for your favorite artists.

>> Check out songs we thought were cool last week. No telling if any or all will make the Top 25.

The Handful – “Dead To Me”. Rock the way it oughta be.

ian | 12/18/2006, 3:19 pm EST

High Tide by Ryan Marks absolutely. This is the only submission that doesn’t have at least one artist in music today that sounds just like it. Blazingly original and exceptionally well-produced.

Ultra Sonic Edukator | 12/18/2006, 3:20 pm EST

I think the Ultra Sonic Edukators were the best band….and I would know, I’m in the band.

Chris C | 12/18/2006, 3:21 pm EST

My vote goes to Astro Junkie!!!!! It was close.

Ryan Marks – High Tide is so fantastic. The lyrics are so poetic, the harmonies so beautifuful. it would be a shame if this wasn’t somewhere on the final list.

lsm | 12/18/2006, 3:26 pm EST

Jim Bianco is the best unsigned act around. He’s owning the Hotel Cafe Tour right now.

Astro Junkie…..

kerem | 12/18/2006, 3:45 pm EST

all the bands that i’ve listened to sound so outdated. continental divide is so innovative and energetic – they remind me of animal collective or wolf parade. i hope they wind up on the list, at least for the sake of diversity.

Yes, I’m a big Edukator fan right now. Thanks RS.

mark | 12/18/2006, 3:51 pm EST

Not content with being behind the unsung Beta Band, Steve Mason is back with Black Affair, which is totally at a tangent to where he was before. Genius. My vote all the way.

Martin from Oxford | 12/18/2006, 3:52 pm EST

More quality from the multi-talented Steve Mason – Japanese Happening is class.

Adam89 | 12/18/2006, 3:52 pm EST

The best band on myspace is farce. The contest should be “The Best Band to Submit their music from myspace to Rolling Stone” otherwise The Egress of myspace.com/theegress would win, but you already knew that, didn’t you. Here’s to true musical independence. Answer to no one.

Johnny | 12/18/2006, 4:05 pm EST

Black Affair – Steve is a genius, I’ve loved everything he’s done. Black Affair is really different but equally as good. LOVE IT – GET THE ALBUM EVERYONE

Just casting my vote for “Close Encounters” by Night Driving In Small Towns. Andi is a dream. :]

Anonymous | 12/18/2006, 4:10 pm EST

Ultra Sonic Edukators have the most credible vibe out of all the bands….who can argue with influences like Blur, Super Furry Animals, Beta Band, Flaming Lips, GBV, and Supergrass? I also heard they may be going on tour with My Morning Jacket…

Hank | 12/18/2006, 4:10 pm EST

RYAN MARKS PRODUCTIONS

matthew burke | 12/18/2006, 4:17 pm EST

THE BLACK AFFAIR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is what direction music needs to go in terms of artistic expression and sheer beauty.
The singer Steve Mason is from The Beta Band, which is one of the best, most underrated bands ever.
he needs to be recognized as one of the best singer/songwriters of the new era.
STEP UP AND VOTE FOR BLACK AFFAIR!

Jacob | 12/18/2006, 4:17 pm EST

Huge kudos to Ryan Marks for making risky, rewarding music like High Tide

Katie | 12/18/2006, 4:34 pm EST

Night Driving in Small Towns!!!!

booji boy | 12/18/2006, 4:35 pm EST

BLACK AFFAIR – Steve Mason is in critical danger of becoming one of those prolific genius’ that will only start getting recognition in about 10 years time when loads of beta band/king biscuit time/black affair inspired bands are all the rage.
lets do something about it now and vote for BLACK AFFAIR, whats wrong with good music being popular?

vinayak | 12/18/2006, 4:35 pm EST

chelsea williams for undicide

Pete | 12/18/2006, 4:36 pm EST

Night Driving in Small Towns is INCREDIBLE. Their recordings are great, and they’re one of the best sounding live bands I’ve heard in a while.

BLACK AFFAIR – - – steve mason is a GENIUS!!!! pow…

roman numerals. KC 4-piece sounds like what joy division would have sounded like if they had grown up instead of just grown older…

http://www.myspace.com/roma nnumerals

Nick L | 12/18/2006, 4:43 pm EST

Chelsea Williams is quite simply awesome. I saw her play live in Santa Monica last summer and she just has an amazing voice! She’s really nice, too!

asmodeus | 12/18/2006, 4:45 pm EST

I think that Killola’s “Barrell of Donkeys” is awesome. Killola is just awesome. Their songs are really unique and original and I dig that. Not to mention Lisa is hot.

Owana | 12/18/2006, 4:48 pm EST

You should pick Phil and the Osophers

~Tara~ | 12/18/2006, 4:50 pm EST

CHELSEA WILLIAMS!!!! SHE ROCKS!!!

Ginger | 12/18/2006, 4:55 pm EST

“High Tide” by Ryan Marks is totally the most original and ground-breaking. Put this at the top of the list!

Cameron Colbeck | 12/18/2006, 5:02 pm EST

Jade Banger rules!!! Pick jade banger for one of the top 25 bands on myspace.

Amanda Fuckin' B | 12/18/2006, 5:02 pm EST

not only does Astro Junkie have a great sound. They are the coolest mother fuckers ever!!!!!!!!!!!!

If any band deserves this…it’s them. They are dedicated and keep in touch with the fans that love them…like me.

Any band that takes the time to chat with the fans is number one on my list and they should be on yours too!

Love,
Amanda B

Tony Ellis | 12/18/2006, 5:03 pm EST

Chelsea Williams sucks…..

Blase | 12/18/2006, 5:04 pm EST

Ultra Sonic Edukators freakin melt faces, Salle Green is probably my favorite tune.

honestly…

that guy | 12/18/2006, 5:04 pm EST

put me down for Night Driving in Small Towns. they seem to have the most complete package. Nothing lacks. The music is superior. The lyrics are clever and memorable. And the melodies are the catchiest of all the bands i’ve heard in the competition. everyone sounds great. NDST just seems to have the edge.

TL | 12/18/2006, 5:05 pm EST

I hope you pick Astro Junkie – they rock, they rule, they should be picked as one of your Top 25. Merci!!

Zane | 12/18/2006, 5:06 pm EST

Jade banger is an all-girl band from Santa Cruz California, and they could outplay anyone else on myspace!!! And their girls! I mean come on, can it get much better than that? GIRLS THAT CAN ACTUALLY PLAY!!!

italianstallion | 12/18/2006, 5:08 pm EST

well ya know what all you people suck becuase infact astrojunkies blow you all away like a 20 dollar wh*re!!

luc | 12/18/2006, 5:13 pm EST

Black Affair – its absolutely brilliant!

Nikki In Fresno CA | 12/18/2006, 5:14 pm EST

The songwriting and actual audio production of Astro Junkie is outstanding. I’ve heard 40 bajillion half-assed bands on Myspace and this is the ONLY indie I’ve heard out there that could possibly COMPETE with the signed guys. I’ve been in radio for almost over 15 years…I know a great band when I hear one. Astro Junkie…all the way.

Sunshine | 12/18/2006, 5:14 pm EST

Ultra Sonic Edukators kill it…Something new and fresh in a age of studio made artist’s. Live shows are like nothing you’ve ever been to and their ablum has track after track of serious rock and roll music.

Hopeless | 12/18/2006, 5:15 pm EST

Roman numerals-Ah……….

Jonny Gray | 12/18/2006, 5:19 pm EST

Night Driving in Small Towns = the win

Gram Canyon | 12/18/2006, 5:30 pm EST

Black Affair!!!!

Steve mason is one of the most important figures in british music of the last 10 yrs, and comes out with another about-turn which can easily compete with some of his greatest moments with the beta band and king biscuit time.

You know who to choose!!

jason | 12/18/2006, 5:30 pm EST

I vote Astro Junkie

jason | 12/18/2006, 5:31 pm EST

Chelsea Williams writes original meaningful songs that are catchy but not annoying, she plays guitar, has a mesmerizing voice, she plays music on the street for a living, is a genuinely nice person and she gorgeous. She is the clear winner!

Jam | 12/18/2006, 6:03 pm EST

Brook | 12/18/2006, 6:22 pm EST

I don’t mean to come off rude to the other bands but, it seems pretty obvious to me that the Ultra Sonic Edukators are the better band… They seem to have a lot more going on than that one “Sally…” song. They’re the real deal.

Done, next please.

Your Mom | 12/18/2006, 6:22 pm EST

JERZY JUNG ALL THE WAY!!! Y’all best be knowin talent when you hear it!!

Dinosaur enthusiast | 12/18/2006, 6:26 pm EST

Hey,
I have seen Jerzy Jung perform at The Bitter End in NYC…lets just say the girl can rock. She’s pretty attractive as well, and for once, her stuff doesn’t sound exactly like every one else’s. Please Rolling Stone, for the love of all that is sacred, do NOT overlook this talent. GO FOR JERZY!!

Jack | 12/18/2006, 6:27 pm EST

Steve Mason is the true champ. Black Affair has really brought Electro back into my life. Thank you Steve!

Chelsea Williams song Undecided

Tom Ferguson | 12/18/2006, 7:15 pm EST

Rolling Stone,

Wihthin a year, Ash Valley will be one of the most important acts in independent music. Their songs revolve around deeply melodic instrumentation & equally-deeply felt, exquisitely-rendered lyrical content.

This is your chance to be ahead of the curve & identify them early on as the upcoming force they are!

http://www.myspace.com/ashval ley

Thanks,
Tom Ferguson

Lish-Fish | 12/18/2006, 7:16 pm EST

NOBODY on that list compares to Chelsea Williams ‘Undecided’. Chelsea all the way!

Matt Williams has very unique abilities and special talents that take him far beyond the norms.Have a listen and enjoy

alyssa | 12/18/2006, 7:37 pm EST

the amount of comments a band or artist gets on this page should have nothing to do with your decision. some of the best bands and artists are completely under the radar, unknown, and amazing. so, alex arrowsmith and “coldplay got eaten by piranhas.” have you HEARD the production on it? the lyrics? the songcraft?

Head | 12/18/2006, 7:39 pm EST

BLACK AFFAIR’s Japanese Happening is the most futuristic retro-styled electro heard this side of the 31st Century. Get ahead, impress your friends by voting BLACK AFFAIR, ultimately saying “I was there”, in 2007, when Steve Mason stormed the ramparts of Culture once more.

Amy Kush | 12/19/2006, 10:59 am EST

THE DARK ROMANTICS!

Of the songs RS nominated, the best were from Kolja, Bryan Scary, and Ultra Sonic Edukators.

BBcatch | 12/19/2006, 11:06 am EST

Bob America’s “The Adventure of Misty and Daisy Fae” is the feel-good song of the year.” Latch onto the tail of this comet…he’s gonna show you a whole new universe of great song writing!

Gbot | 12/19/2006, 11:09 am EST

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – Bryan Scary and The Shredding Tears are one of the coolest and most original bands I’ve seen crop up in NYC in years. Their combining lush 60s pop with 70s prog, Tim Burton-esque imagery with manic, punky energy – it adds up to an incredible experience. The live show is amazing, but the debut record is INSANE!

dangermarc | 12/19/2006, 11:10 am EST

just imagine how hurt they will feel if they don’t win.

but seriously, dark romantics for president.

cDode | 12/19/2006, 11:46 am EST

Bob America’s song gave me a tingle on my testicles, a holiday treat, his music is inspired and inspiring, a tour d’ force, a coup d’ tat, a mystical combination of lou reed, tom waits, prince, 4 beautiful women, and a pair of very, very hairy balls.

Don’t miss this song! For the love of God!

I also vote this song to win a host of other awards: Nobel Peace Prize, Nobel War Prize, Victims of repeated Owl Attacks’ Greatest Comeback Story of the Year, and the MVP for all four baseball and football leagues.

You don’t believe me? Check it out, fool. It’s a scrumptious, wholesome family treat.

Bob America for President.
Bob America for Best Song.
Bob America’s daughter/son for the wife of my future daughter/son should I have one, adopted or otherwise.
Bob America for God.
Bob America with Heinz Tomato Ketchup.

TREATY OF PARIS ALL THE WAY! They’re really cool and they let me interview them for my school’s newspaper. Treaty of Paris stay true to their fans, and they try to hang out and meet them after shows. They’re all great guys. Besides that, they have really upbeat catchy tunes. They’ve worked their butts off, and these guys really deserve to be in Rolling Stone.
Even if they don’t make the list, they’re still number one on my list.

FTA song “Better With You” is the best song ever.

You really don’t understand how fantastic The Dark Romantics are. Just turn them on and dance like crazy…trust me…it’ll be the best dance you’ve ever had. They make me feel all warm and fuzzy.

Perfectly_You_315 | 12/19/2006, 4:12 pm EST

Wow, I’m not sure who Chapel719 is, but they should make Chelsea Williams “Undecided” song disqualfied. Clearly she has only 1 fan, that is ruining this board for the other acts who actually have fans.

My vote is for FIVE TIMES AUGUST “Better With You.” That’s a great song and he puts on one of the best solo live performances I’ve ever seen…AMAZING guitar skills.

Cole | 12/19/2006, 4:22 pm EST

Shannon Hurley still gets my vote.

Hope she makes it into your Top-25!

The best song out of the group is “Don’t Say Another Word” by Astro Junkie. I keep singing it over and over. Can’t get it out of my head!

Angel Oliver | 12/19/2006, 5:16 pm EST

It’s interesting that Chelsea Williams has so many revved up fans when she’s just a totally indie music girl putting her stuff out there on her own. She doesn’t have a street team or a publicist or any of that. I guess it’s just just her music speaks for itself and lots of people all over the world get very excited about it. She got all those fans one by one by playing on the street, word of mouth and myspace!

And some of her music is very chill and still her fans are very loyal and enthusiastic about it and wildly supportive!

I would say Chelsea Williams was a great pick for Rollings Stone’s best bands on myspace.

Ugo | 12/19/2006, 5:16 pm EST

High Tide by Ryan marks is just so complex! I dig his style.

mackin wafers | 12/19/2006, 5:56 pm EST

I love Five Times August.
Amazing live :)

Justine | 12/19/2006, 5:57 pm EST

I don’t think Chelsea Williams has control of all her 26,000 fans on myspace.

For all we know the annoying posts could be some other band trying to annoy people or get her disqualified.

Jeremy | 12/19/2006, 6:08 pm EST

Astro Junkie Don’t Say Another Word. That’s all I have to say. Besides this:

“JUNKIES F’N RULE!”

GET ON THE BUS PEOPLE! It ain’t stoppin’

Rascal | 12/19/2006, 6:17 pm EST

Rolling Stone,

The very best song in this entire thing is High Tide by Ryan Marks Productions. Just listen to the power behind that chilling final section. Upright bass, drums and punchy piano. This guy is a mad genius.

Rascal

I’m not surprised Chelsea Williams is so popular in this competition. When I first heard her voice walking down the Promenade on vacation last summer I immediately knew I was hearing something very special.

After hearing her songs, including “Undecided” I’m certain she is going to go very far!

‘The Adventures of Misty and Daisy Fae” by Bob America is a hybrid rock/blues/yelp number that makes me think of Beck meeting G Love and spanking him all night with a rubber chicken. I think this is good.

Some of you people are ANNOYING AS FUCK. Stop posting Mr Vertigo, or Shannon Hurley or whatever the fuck it is.

In the end, it all comes down to these three bands:

1. Ultra Sonic Edukators (their sound is intense!)
2. Fancy Claps (they’re the most authentic of these bands)
3. An Pierlé & White Velvet(Kickass music!)

A great justice will be done if anyone of these 3 win!

anton g | 12/19/2006, 8:34 pm EST

yo the fancy claps be the illest group rockin in the t dot area i seen them 2 times at o’reilys it was insane they got sum crazy clasic rock sounds and a hip new alternative sound two and to be fo real i would def pay 15 dollas to go see them fancy claps again !!

Ryan Marks Productions should win

The Myspace Addict | 12/19/2006, 8:56 pm EST

Hey man…I nominated Astro Junkie because their music is THAT DAMN GOOD. I am all over stupid Myspace every damn day…and it’s hard to find an indie that has the quality of songwriting and production that they bring to the table. They’re the real thing. And they don’t have a million friends…because they spend time creating…not using their looks to lure in unsuspecting fans. They’re real, man.

amanda fuckin' b | 12/19/2006, 9:05 pm EST

astro junkies…why? because i fuckin’ said so!!!!

i dont that chelsea girl should win just because her fan wasted my time as i scrolled down to the bottom of this page for an hour and a half because she wrote her name 8 million times. hey person…it’s not cool…its lame. go punch yourself in the face!!!

anyfuck, their songs get stuck in my head all day!!

Yuriz | 12/19/2006, 10:07 pm EST

In truth, I doubt Malaysia is a country that many would know so I reckon this band has that disadvantage.. but hey, if it’s worth anything, I reckon they’re an excellent band that deserves some kind of recognition for what they have done especially considering from where they have done it. Go POP SHUVIT!

Pop Shuvit! I’ve seen them from their beginning many years ago and they sound even better every time I see them! Great live band – awesome stage presence! Vote for Pop Shuvit!

The Grubby 1 | 12/20/2006, 10:01 am EST

Locksley is an awesome band with the right idea. They are sooo under-represented on this board. I’m not one of their close friends…actually. They just have the “right idea”. Their sound is great, great vocals, pop hooks, chord changes. They fuse a classic pop beatles vibe with a modern strokesy-libertines one. That’s a great idea and they make it work reallly well. They’re are undoubtably one of the 25 best bands I’ve heard on myspace. I don’t think it would be so terrible if they were named no. 1 either. If you read this locksley, good luck to you and I hope rolling stone feels as I do.

Christopher | 12/20/2006, 4:34 pm EST

Chelsea Williams is an inspiration. Her creativity and musical ability are only surpassed by her dedication and commitment. She is an amazing song writer who puts herself into her music instead of putting marketing into it. One of the hardest goals to accomplish as a writer is to tell a story in a way that everyone can understand and make their own, while still telling the story you know. Chelsea accomplishes this with “Undecided” as well as with her other songs. She writes from her heart and puts her soul into everything she does. Purely put she is Amazing.

jerseygirl | 12/20/2006, 4:36 pm EST

It’s so great to see the Chelsea Williams doing so well here. She’s really got the whole package going on. When you hear her songs with just her and her guitar you can tell she’s a real artist with real talent.

I definately think Night Driving In Small Towns should be in the Top 25. Close Encounters has such a smooth sound, the harmonies are nice and most importantly it’s just down right a GREAT SONG. Chelsea Williams and Jerzy Jung are great too and would be my second favorites. They should all 3 make it in my opinion.. but then again I just appreciate good music, I don’t know about everyone else.

I would really like for a band named Strike the Nerve to be on this list. Strike the Nerve is a combination of Red Hot Chili Peppers, and the Dave Matthews Band, and I along with countless others can say that this band is truely amazing. They’ve played many shows at The Revolution and JJ muggs, a local pub in Coral Springs, FL. But the best thing about the band is that their only in high school yet they have the sound as well as the power to rock a stadium!
you can hear them at
