This year, producer Timbaland went from shadowy hip-hop genius to king of pop (a.k.a. “that guy in every video”) — and judging by the sneak peek we got of his upcoming “solo” album, his reign may well continue in ‘07. Timbaland Presents Shock Value, due in March, is set to include songs with Justin Timberlake, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Nelly Furtado, M.I.A. and Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger — plus She Wants Revenge, Elton John and the Hives. While we haven’t heard the Hives track yet (can’t wait), we did check out the song with She Wants Revenge, which has Tim rapping and singing over the band’s guitar lines, with Justin Warfield coming in on the chorus. We also heard the ultra-poppy “Scream,” with Scherzinger, which features a simple, tambourine-bashing rhythm track — and someone having a very loud (fake?) orgasm in the background.

Hip Hop genius? You’re kidding right? First off, hip-hop genius is an oxy-moron. Steal other artists work, sample it with some lame computerized beat, and then talk over top of it. 99% of hip-hop is no-talent ass clowns.

Larry, you’re an idiot.
travis.watkins002 @ YIM | 12/18/2006, 5:39 pm EST
yep. hip hop is lame as F&*K… even Wu Tang.

To his credit, Timbaland doesn’t just sample other artists and rap over them, he actually composes most of the melodies and rhythms. He is definitely positioning himself as the most important producer in mainstream pop music, for whatever that’s worth. I’m not a huge fan, but I respect the originality that he brings to a genre that is ever-decaying at the hands of producers like Diddy and Scott Storch. He’s no Quincy Jones, but he’s head and shoulders above most pop producers.
Jacob | 12/18/2006, 6:42 pm EST
I absolutly love most of Timbalands beats he can really bring his own style, but i kinda dont like that he is making more pop beats than hip-hop, but im sure he still hasen’t lost that touch, because his sound is still there.

Just because hip hop doesnt sound like “Stairway To Heaven” or “Hotel California” doesnt make it shit. hip hop might not be my favorite form of music (rock will always be my love), i still respect it. plus, it gives us kids something to dance too.
so all of you 40 year olds on here that always post stupid comments, shut the hell up, open up your god damn mind, listen to music, and shut up.
Mike/Houston,TX. | 12/18/2006, 9:28 pm EST
I totally agree with Larry. When hip-hoppers compose and actually write their own music instead of tastelessly ripping off other artists’ works, then maybe – just maybe[if that's possible] – you can they can be credited as a minor talent. Taking a ride at the expense of already established material/compositions does not make a genius.

In my opinion, Timbaland makes great “hip-pop” nowsince he and Missy Elliott parted ways for her last CD. Genius? Probably not. A huge talent? Definitely. I love the work he has been doing this past year with Nelly Furtado, (a great talent on her own) and JT. I give props and much respect to Tim
josh R | 12/18/2006, 11:03 pm EST
does anybody remember paul’s boutique or beck’s odelay? both of those are super heavy on samples, but are both genius. yes, genius. just because a musician samples song snippets, doesn’t mean a work cannot be genius. it all depends on how the sample is used, whether it is twisted into a unique creation or whether relied upon merely as fodder.
“steal other artists work”–the same has been said about rock music in general, especially early works that ripped off grooves and style from black artists.
as for timbaland, he definitely belonds in the producer hall of fame, with guys like george martin, brian eno, and phil spector [and probably rick rubin]. if not for his music, then definitely for his impact. he has shaped how so many people listen to music, and the style thereof, to the point that his influence alone puts him in that rareified air.
josh r | 12/18/2006, 11:04 pm EST
and, of course, we still need to define exactly what “genius” means

Excellent points josh R.
I find it a little hypocritical to criticize hip hop for sampling rock and other genres of music, when some of the best rock artists walk the same line.
The Strokes ripped off “American Girl” for “Last Nite”. The Chili Peppers did the same thing with “Dani California”, which is a dead sound alike for “Mary Jane’s Last Dance”. Does that make those songs less enjoyable? Or artists who made them less talented? Of course not.

Larry and Mike are going to hell for their blasphemous comments about hip-hop. Its clear all you do is skim through simple radio hits and know nothing about The Roots, Timbaland, The Neptunes, Dr. Dre, Jay-Z, OutKast, Cee-Lo, Danger Mouse, Nas, Ghostface, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Dead Prez, Kanye West, Busta Rhymes….

lol!
fuck silly ppl who don’t understand somethin n still give their opinion on it!
as 4 Timbaland himself.. well, i’ve enjoyed most of his work, includin his production on Missy E n others.. way b4 explodin on the scene as he did with Justin n Nelly this year.. i think he’s out there (in a different style) next to the Doc, Just Blaze or Kanye in the hip hop world..
