Weekend Rock List: What is The Greatest Clash Song Ever?

12/15/06, 5:51 pm EST

ClashWe’re all about simplicity right now. A series of days consisting primarily of working while eating free holiday chocolate, then drinking free whiskey all night at holiday parties has left us craving some good, detoxifying punk rock. The song we’ve listened to most today? “Lost In the Supermarket.” Of course we wouldn’t suggest that one could, casually at the end of a Friday, determine the greatest song ever recorded by one of the most inspired, influential groups in the history of rock. That’s what the weekend is for. What is your pick for absolute best Clash song ever?

….London Calling…..the album !!!

Mike27 | 12/15/2006, 6:11 pm EST

Ill have to go with the obvious choice – “London Calling”. Although “Tommy Gun” is pretty underrated.

JT | 12/15/2006, 6:15 pm EST

London Calling!!!!

Sophie | 12/15/2006, 6:18 pm EST

for me, its “London Calling”, or “Train in Vain.” The whole London Calling album is good!

swineherder | 12/15/2006, 6:51 pm EST

see, if you asked someone to name the best nirvana song, the temptation to name “smells like teen spirit” would come up because that was such a definitive and subversive pop anthem, but at the same time it’s too obvious and not as typically underground as one thinks of that band. same with the clash. london calling is too obvious a choice, but it’s too obvious because it’s so clearly a perfect clash song. so this is a convoluted answer, but i agree that london calling is the one to choose.

Topher | 12/15/2006, 6:53 pm EST

Anything, really. I’m definitely partial to tracks from London Calling. My top 5 Clash Songs are:

5. Hateful
4. Spanish Bombs
3. Julie’s Been Working On The Drug Squad
2. Death or Glory
1. White Man In Hammersmith Palais

SATAN | 12/15/2006, 6:57 pm EST

GREATEST SONG FROM CLASH, NON-PUNK DIVISION—TRAIN IN VAIN

PUNK DIVISION–POLICE ON MY BACK (ALTHOUGH I THINK IT’S A COVER OF AN OLD REGGAE SONG)

THOSE ARE JUST MY FAVORITES. GRAB LONDON CALLING, SANDINISTA!, AND COMBAT ROCK FOR A GREAT LESSON FROM A GREAT BAND. GET THE CLASH SINGLES FOR A GOOD PRIMER. (GREATEST “GUILTY PLEASURE” CLASH SONG—”THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN” MIXES PUNK, DISCO, RAP, AND FUNK BEFORE ANYONE DID)

Nandowar | 12/15/2006, 7:01 pm EST

How about these:

5. This Is Radio Clash
4. Spanish Bombs
3. Should I Stay Or Should I Go
2. I Fought The Law

i have to agree with ‘guns of brixton’. to me, it’s their most powerful and affecting song ever.

Aaron | 12/15/2006, 10:24 pm EST

White man in Hammersmith palace…hands down, not even close. The rest of you need to review your Clash records (CD’s). I’ll wait………….OK, you’re back. I’m sure you all see it my way now. “Train in Vain” ? I think what you’re looking for in a the GREATEST Clash song is a song that is actually representative of the band, not their version of “Miss You” (their disco tune)

Janie Jones | 12/15/2006, 10:43 pm EST

soo many great songs everyone has their favourites they vote for, here are mine.

Guns of Brixton – politics, a driving beat, bitter call for action

Rudy can’t fail

Yenrac | 12/16/2006, 1:13 pm EST

I’ve really tried to like the Clash over the years, I got the singles as a gift at one point and tried for a year or so to get into it as the Clash are supposed to be soo good, but although it wasn’t awful, it wasn’t much either in my honest opinion, But I see them as another in the “most overrated artists”, they are the Bruce Springsteen of punk rock. Horribly overrated.

But that said, they do have one great song that all the Clash fans hate–”Train in Vain” is an absolute gem. A beatly, catchy pop song that far outshines “Clash City Rockers”, “London Calling” and anything else Joe Strummer sung….

Apoklnow | 12/16/2006, 1:22 pm EST

Tough but…

Red Angel Dragnet

Sean Flynn | 12/16/2006, 2:01 pm EST

White Man In Hammersmith Palais

RedSG | 12/16/2006, 2:30 pm EST

I respect other peoples opinions, but I’d prefer it if those who don’t care much for the Clash would try to restrain themselves from knocking them on this page. This is for Clash lovers, not haters. They aren’t overrated (and neither is Springsteen).

Mase In Myrtle | 12/16/2006, 3:07 pm EST

London Calling is not only my favorite CLASH song…but my FAVORITE song EVER!!! I decided that a few weeks ago. I never get tired of hearing it. There are many other great songs, but nothing comes close to London Calling for me.

chuck | 12/16/2006, 3:09 pm EST

th question is way too hard…………I could spend the rest of my life trying to pick one over the other.
Too many great songs..no matter what I could come up with..two minutes later,I will change my mind.
Why dont we have bands as good as the Clash anymore?

Odys Coltrane | 12/16/2006, 4:26 pm EST

How could I have possibly left White Man in Hammersmith Palais off my list. “If Adolf Hitler flew in today, we’d send a limousine anyway” makes me think of a Conneticut-Texan who likes to play cowboy and wear flight uniforms

RottenJohnny1482 | 12/17/2006, 12:00 am EST

Charlie Don’t Surf
But We Think He SHOULD !!!

Chris | 12/17/2006, 12:43 am EST

An almost impossible question to answer, but here goes a list of my top five:

1. London Calling: From the opening pound of the drums, the stacatto guitar and the flourish of Joe’s opening lines, this is great in the first 20 seconds.

2. White Man in Hammersmith Palais- Maybe the best lyrics of any Clash song, and the reference to Hitler in the last verse, all rage and painful truth, never gets old or cliche.

3. Clampdown- Another London Calling song. Great opening by Mick, killer guitars and what other band could throw in a line like “Who’s barmy now?” at the end of a song and make it sound both bizarre and dead on?

4. Straight to Hell (Live version on From Here to Eternity)- Like the best of Bob Dylan, this one makes time stop. Joe never sounded more weary or pained.

5. White Riot- Less than two minutes long, with barely a word discernable, yet somehow it makes sense, kind of. Is it about a race riot? Blind rage? I know someone understands it, but tell you the truth, I don’t need to know. It’s a song about attitude, and that makes more sense than any translation could.

Ten best of the rest:

Tommy Gun
Gates of the West
London’s Burning
Armegeddon Time
Career Opportunites
Safe European Home
Guns of Brixton
Should I Stay or Should I Go
The Right Profile
I Fought the Law (Yeah, it’s another cover, and it’s the definitive version)

Brian | 12/17/2006, 1:23 am EST

Armagideon Time!!!

Gaz | 12/17/2006, 1:45 am EST

Ah The Clash. I was 20 when Give ‘em enough Rope came out. I already had their debut which “at the time” couldn’t quite grasp it’s greatness. Too rough. As the needle dropped onto Safe European Home I thought “Whoaah”…and as Topper’s pulverising drumming finishes it off I thought “DoubleWhoaah”. The rest of the album was just merely great by comparison.
The whole of the London Calling album was their second best track & one of the best albums ever made.

NW | 12/17/2006, 1:57 am EST

White Man in Hammersmith Palais, by far. They knew what punk was going to become before it even became that…”Hah, you think it’s funny turning rebellion into money?”

Richard Alexander Ross | 12/17/2006, 5:01 am EST

its to hard to say there all so good

Briana | 12/17/2006, 5:26 am EST

Bankrobber!

Best lyrics Joe ever wrote:

“Daddy was a bankrobber
But he never hurt nobody
He just loved to live that way
And he loved to steal your money”

“Some is rich
Some is poor
That’s the way the world is
But I don’t believe in lying back
Saying how bad my luck is”

Without a doubt: Hateful. Great tune, strong lyrics. Smart assesment of smack addiction and it’s implications. But most of all, it just rocks. The only band that matters indeed….

Johan (swe) | 12/17/2006, 3:39 pm EST

Here’s a few gems people have overlooked -

“Broadway” from Sandinista
“The Prisoner” from Black Market Clash
“Pressure Drop”, also from Black Market Clash
“Corner Soul” from Sandinista

Unquestionably the best band in history!

Brennan | 12/17/2006, 4:35 pm EST

I’ve got agree with whoever said it earlier: the Clash song that most gives me goosebumps and “stop time” is the live version of “Straight to Hell” off of From Here to Eternity, but it’s not necessarily their “best” song. Too many good choices, in too many different styles. Ah…

ronramone | 12/17/2006, 6:02 pm EST

Stay Free. The album version doesn’t do justice to the live version.

em4nuto | 12/17/2006, 7:03 pm EST

my favorite song is groovytimes followed by 1977

Zach | 12/17/2006, 7:49 pm EST

Police and Thieves?

Clampdown?

Aaaa aagh!!!!

Just not “Guns of Brixton.” Sorry.

Chris | 12/17/2006, 9:34 pm EST

Death or Glory
Train in Vain (Live version on FHTE)
Police on My Back
Maginficent Seven (Live version)
Lightning Strikes (Live from Clash on Broadway
Jail Guitar Doors

I had the pleasure of meeting Joe Strummer and even having a beer with him a few months before he died. I’ll treasure that brief encounter for the rest of my life.

A true gent and greatly missed.

#1: I’m So Bored With The USA

hudson falcon | 12/19/2006, 6:23 am EST

London Calling is the best album, and Spanish Bombs is the best song they’ve written. Just my opinion.

ClashFan | 12/19/2006, 8:52 am EST

The one that consistently sits on my iPOD is “Police On My Back”.

“Clampdown” and “Janie Jones” rank right up there as well.

A better (and truer) punk band there will never be.

chuck | 12/19/2006, 10:34 am EST

Revolution Rock!!!!
Are you listening monsters????

Amanda | 12/22/2006, 3:42 am EST

“London Calling” because Tom Morello likes it!!!!!!!

Lindsey | 12/28/2006, 2:42 am EST

My favourite used to be the ever popular “London Calling”, but when I finally found Super Black Market Clash for sale, I gave it a listen, and now my absolute, never-changing favourite has to be “Gates of the West”.

BRAND NEW CADILLAC! HANDS DOWN!

LONDON CALLING > SLICED BREAD

Michael | 1/2/2007, 3:34 pm EST

Outrageous. Not a single Clash song in the candidate list for “Best song ever” on http://www.rankopedia.com

Michael | 1/4/2007, 1:10 am EST

London Calling. Ill never get tired of listening to it.

dragon3 | 1/8/2007, 11:33 am EST

London Calling is their best. Period.

But BRAND NEW CADILLAC is the shit!!!

Conrad C. | 1/12/2007, 3:55 pm EST

Changes all the time. I recently listened to “White Man in the Hammersmith Palais” on repeat for eight hours straight at work. My current faves “The Call Up”-take that for a surge in troops for Iraq, George. And of course “Junco Partner”. Can’t stop listening to Sandinista lately.

CM | 2/10/2007, 9:17 pm EST

sooo many to choose from but one that never lets me down is
“White Man in Hammersmith Palais” without a doubt

Azzum | 2/11/2007, 6:01 pm EST

Christ there’s too many

White Riot
Stright To Hell
Tommy Gun
London Calling
Know Your Rights
White Man In Hammersmith Palais
Bankrobber
This Is Radio Clash
Should I Stay or Should I Go

Andrew Lavigne | 2/14/2007, 8:53 am EST

White Man in Hammersmith Palais. The best song they ever wrote.

James Maroney | 3/23/2007, 7:13 pm EST

It would be obvious to go with London Calling of White Man, however, i’m going with Know Your Rights, the relevant lyrics, the tension within the music (It was Micks last album with the others), and the fact that everytime i hear it elsewhere it sends shivers down my spine in my opinion, elevates it above everthing else on Combat Rock, Sandinista and ‘Enough Rope, bar maybe straight to hell. However, it would be wrong to deny London Calling it’s rightful position as one of the Greatest sets of songs in Rock History.

P.S, Why come on a ‘Favourite Song Survey’ just to slag the band off, a bit sad innit? Shit like My Chemical Romance is about 2500 miles across the altantic if you want to be a stupid fuck and have no respect for the greatest muslical testiment since John Paul George and Ringo thought “tourings getting pretty boring, I Know, let’s go and make Revolver.”

Robert A. Zimmerman | 4/5/2007, 3:53 pm EST

“1977″ and that’s that.

Ian | 4/7/2007, 2:25 pm EST

London Calling Without Question

The Meister | 7/21/2007, 10:19 am EST

I’d go for a slightly les well-known and acknowledged one- Rock the Casbah, great rhythm, good riffs, great lyrics, epitomised the punk movement.

Anonymous | 8/9/2007, 4:25 am EST

My favorite changes everytime I listen to them xD
I couldn’t really chose.

London Calling is a popular choise, it’s up there~

The Gil | 1/10/2008, 2:31 am EST

My personal favourite is Straight To Hell…How about This Is England….I know it’s off of Cut The Crap but it’s still a great tune…but London Calling never fails.

Robo | 7/25/2008, 7:40 am EST

I know they’re all off London Calling, but I have to say in no particular order:

Spanish Bombs
Guns of Brixton
Lost in the Supermarket
Clampdown

Don Coleman | 10/17/2008, 10:29 am EST

the clash is my favorite band of all time and it upsets me so that joe is gone. but to me the greatest clash song is: Ghettto Defendant. Mostly because of the reggae vibe it has and the lyrics speak a powerful message.

Josh | 11/4/2008, 2:16 pm EST

The Sound of Sinners
Police on my Back
Janie Jones
Safe European Home
English Civil War
Career Opportunities

Cameron | 12/4/2008, 8:48 pm EST

ROCK THE CASBAH

Nigel Norman | 1/30/2009, 6:56 am EST

White Man In Hammersmith Palais was Joe’s favourite so that’s good enough for me! I clearly remember cycling home with a copy of the single clutched in my sweaty young hand and seeing them play this song live soon after. London was a violent and scary town in 1978 for 16 year old – very tribal!

Clashman | 3/28/2009, 7:18 am EST

TRAIN IN VAIN

Just A Guy | 7/7/2009, 4:05 pm EST

Complete Control (Live FHTE)
Straight to Hell (Live FHTE)
Somebody Got Murdered (Live Bond Bootleg)

K | 11/12/2009, 8:47 pm EST

Not in any order but:

Rock the Casbah
London Calling
Know your Rights

The Clash rule!!!
