Our very own Peter Travers has put together his list of the 10 Best Movies of 2006. After reading it, mostly we’re thinking that our taste is totally awesome because we like a lot of the same movies as Travers. Our favorite movie of the year? The Departed. Travers’ favorite movie of the year? The Departed. Crazy, right? He also really likes Dreamgirls (Number Two,) and Little Miss Sunshine (Number Nine,) which we really enjoyed. Check out the full list here, and let us know if you agree/disagree with these selections?

Now it’s for sure… you don’t know music or movies.
keke | 12/15/2006, 9:45 am EST
I have not seen all of the movies that appear on the list of the top 10 but I do want to see them. I can honestly say that The Departed was one of the best movies that I have seen this year. I thought it was excellent. I must disagree with one entry on the worst 10 movies. X-Men: The Last Stand was not one of the worse movies this year. It wasn’t one of the best but come on, be realistic, it was not one of the worst.
alfredborden | 12/15/2006, 10:12 am EST
I am really glad The Departed was your number one flick: so many times Scorsese directs the best movie of the year and gets no recognition for it. But this time, someone did him one better, I think: The Prestige was the best film of the year, with characters as dark and original as any Scorsese flick. But it didn’t show up on your list anywhere.
Nathan | 12/15/2006, 12:55 pm EST
I think Peter Travers did another fine list as always, his lists generally come closer to my own than any other critic. This year is no exception. Everything I’ve seen on the list-save for the well intentioned by pulse-free “Babel” is great. I loved “The Departed”, “A Prairie Home Companion”,”Borat”, and “The Queen” is phenomenal. I thought “United 93″ was a masterpiece, and considering everything Travers has written about the film, I’m a little surprised to see it only clock in at #6. Something I think is worth noting though is that “Little Miss Sunshine” only received 3-stars from Travers when he initially reviewed it. Virtually everything in his runner-ups list got 3 1/2 stars from him. I think this is the first time since he’s given star ratings that he’s put a 3-star film on his year end list-and I think it’s a pretty worthy recepient of that honor. I wonder what the reason is though.
M | 12/15/2006, 1:59 pm EST
Snakes on a Plane should be both on the best and the worst. It was bad on purpose and thats what made it great.
moeller | 12/15/2006, 2:28 pm EST
why is the german movie “Das Leben die Anderen” not listed as one of the greatest movies of the year? Personally I think that the movie represents the finest acting of the year, the most exciting and appealing story. I admire the director for his outstanding effort of 4 years of research on the circumstances in former DDR. What do you guys think?
Mike | 12/15/2006, 3:35 pm EST
Is it against the rules to have a James Bond movie be in the top 10?
The new James Bond is easily one of the best movies of the year. Easily. Better than Little Miss Sunshine which gets a little too ridiculous in spots.
I’m sorry…but it’s better than The Departed too. Departed was good, but no Goodfellas. I mean…what a letdown when…. (SPOILER ALERT)!!!!!….DeCaprio gets killed….by a nobody?! A great performance and huge build-up gets snatched away in an almost copout ending.
Best thing about The Departed was Alec Baldwin…with easily the best line of the year:
“I’m gonna go have a smoke..you wanna smoke…ahhh you probably don’t smoke, you’re probably all into that fitness stuff…go fuck yourself!” Genius.
Chef Paul | 12/15/2006, 3:38 pm EST
Blood Diamonds should have been very high the best list. Everything about it– acting, directing, script and photography– is excellent.
2abug | 12/15/2006, 4:06 pm EST
“V For Vendetta” for one of the best movie of the year and “Hills Have Eyes” for the worst…oh, and I forgot Steve Martin’s soporific “Shop Girl”
Anonymous | 12/15/2006, 5:59 pm EST
V For Vendetta should have made something on the list, probably top ten.
nathan | 12/15/2006, 7:35 pm EST
Great list, though Casino Royale should have been on it.
My pick for worst of the year:
the completely ridiculous Pirates of the Caribbean 2.
August | 12/15/2006, 10:22 pm EST
I agree with the Best Pic choice, even though I think maybe Babel was my personal favorite, however I cant believe the high rankin of Dreamgirls considering it got a lower star rating than Babel or Volver did, doesnt make sense to me.
Andy | 12/16/2006, 6:02 am EST
I am in Iraq so I haven’t seen all the movies but I’ve seen a bunch on bootleg DVD that the US Gov. allows to be sold within the US embassy walls. I would have only included IRAQ FOR SALE as one of the top docs. THE DEPARTED is a great movie but probably only Scorsese’s 3rd or 4th best film. I don’t think he’ll ever top RAGING BULL.
charliemapleton | 12/16/2006, 11:45 am EST
To my peoples at rs.com,I don’t hate your picks, but let me speak on mine:
“Madea’s Family Reunion”
“Big Momma’s House 2″
“School For Scoundrels”
“Talledega Nights:The Ballad Of Ricky Bobby”
Conrad | 12/16/2006, 12:05 pm EST
yeah i agree that x-men was at least bearable and didnt belong on the worst lists…I agree with the list, mostly. The Prestige was really good and maybe shoulda been on there. However, I cannot believe that Borat is 8th! After Peter Travers calls it the comedy of the decade? why is the decade’s best comedy not better than this years 4th drama movie? i think drama movies are better, but when a fantastic comedy comes along, you have to give it props. Borat got more stars than i think every film except departed
Conrad | 12/16/2006, 12:09 pm EST
never Mind, my bad! The #2 pick threw me off! letters from Iwo Jima and Babel (and maybe Volver i dont remember) also got 4 stars! how is dreamgirls #2? i still think borat is top 5 matieral, AT LEAST
heather | 12/16/2006, 3:03 pm EST
seriously? dreamgirls?
right. 07 new years resolution, NO MORE DRINKING ON THE JOB!
White Elephant | 12/16/2006, 3:15 pm EST
Looks like a pretty crap year if sub-par Scorsese like The Departed is called the best film. Gone is the Marty who made deeply personal films like Mean Streets, Last Temptation of Christ, and Bringing out the Dead. It looks like he was replaced with Antoine Fuqua. Personally I found much better films to be Tristram Shandy, Little Children, A Prairie Home Companion, and Casino Royale.
Ted Koppel | 12/16/2006, 3:36 pm EST
“Borat” is not only the best movie of 2006, but one of the funniest comedies of all time. You guys are just trying to act cool having it at #8.
Q | 12/16/2006, 3:40 pm EST
Departed was that good for a Marty movie. C’mon, he made fucking Raging Bull. And Babel just wishes it was Syriana. But why is Borat only #8?
Q | 12/16/2006, 3:41 pm EST
excuse me, Departed was NOT that good
Graham | 12/16/2006, 4:53 pm EST
Didn’t anyone here see the critically acclaimed half Nelson? In my opinion, not only the best movie of the year, but of the past few years.
Reality Check | 12/16/2006, 5:23 pm EST
Gotta agree, the most fun I had at the movies this year were at Casino Royale and Borat.
X-Men wasn’t that bad. We’ve come to expect too much from comic book movies.
I agreed with most of the picks though. Admittedly, I haven’t seen The Queen or Prairie Home Companion. I wonder if the latter is on there as a posthumous nod to Altman. And Where is V for Vendetta? I thought it was great.
JFK | 12/16/2006, 11:14 pm EST
For Your Consideration was a terrible movie. Poor acting, a terrible script. Nothing in the movie was even close to being funny. It seems as though when you have a popular “art house” director that he can do no wrong. If any other director had put out that piece of crap, it would have been panned. I want those 90 minutes of my life back.
L | 12/16/2006, 11:26 pm EST
What is with Babel? I thought the movie was horrible. My two favorites were The Departed and World Trade Center, which is not getting the credit it deserves.
Mark | 12/16/2006, 11:44 pm EST
Didn’t like everything on the list but props for giving the Departed number 1 and putting x3 as one of your worst movies.
Shaneman | 12/17/2006, 7:53 am EST
Finally! A RS year-end list I can agree for the most part with. The Departed truly was the best film I’ve seen all year, but I think Borat should be a little higher, too. And props for adding the overlooked Little Miss Sunshine!
Only a few gripes I have. V for Vendetta should certainly be in the top films. Oh, and Lady in the Water should be the worst film of the year. I’m a huge M. Night fan, but I still can’t wrap my head around THAT pretentious piece of crap.
Madge Staley | 12/17/2006, 3:38 pm EST
I didn’t see Blood Diamond listed nor King of Scotland?
For Your Consideration was the biggest disappointment as far as anticipated releases. I love everything Guest has done up to that point…it was crap and not even funny. It came across like it was made from a group who were out of touch with even behind the scenes of indie movies. How you could even put in the Best of The Rest is beyond me.
Anyway, what a crappy year for movies.
My top10
1. Blood Diamond
2. Little Miss Sunshine
3. Departed
4. Borat
5. King of Scotland
6. Down in the Valley
Nothing else deserves to be listed. They all sucked harder than a crack whore during an ice storm.
Graham | 12/17/2006, 3:47 pm EST
I live in New Zealand right now, so unfortunately a good deal of these movies haven’t come out here yet, but The Departed, Borat, and Casino Royale are the three best movies that I have seen this year, with an honorable mention for Thank You for Smoking. Leonardo DiCaprio is quickly disguishing himself as the greatest actor of his generation (besides Joshua Jackson, of course), and I really hope that Mark Wahlberg gets an Oscar nod for his performance. On the other side, Lady in the Water was definitely the worst, but Snakes on a Plane was great campy fun. Sam “Paycheck” Jackson never disappoints.
Travis C. | 12/18/2006, 1:46 pm EST
This was about the worst list I have ever seen online. But then again, it’s Peter Travers, who seems to salivate over the most inane of action features.
If you go out and see every film, as opposed to just what the Studios insist you see, your ten best will look more like this (in no particular order):
Sweet Land, The Proposition, Little Miss Sunshine, An Inconvenient Truth, Deliver Us From Evil, The Queen, Letters From Iwo Jima, Water, Wordplay and Half Nelson.
These were the true greats this year, and I urge everyone to go out and see as many independent films as possible. 49 Up, 51 Birch Street, The Death of Mr. Laszarescu, Kekexili:Mountain Patrol, Jesus Camp and Neil Young:Heart of Gold were all incredible.
Arturo Martinez | 12/18/2006, 1:47 pm EST
Click was good….but why is The Departed at #1? It was not that good…is RS trying to build some integrity with that? I’m sorry but how can you stand with no backbone?
RS is really doing a bad job at reviewing, at times not even giving the actual review more than a few lines…c’mon! Let’s get back to the real reviewing when you actually wrote a story on a film and not just a sidebar!!!
Wade Le Fevre | 12/18/2006, 3:27 pm EST
I like Peter Travers, who is always fair and doesn’t go for what the audience likes or what all the critics like. He goes for what he likes. That I can respect. While I don’t agree with all of Peter’s choices, I do agree that The Departed was easily the best movie that came out this year. I didn’t even want to see it. Someone had to talk me into it. I also loved Miami Vice. I thought, behind Superman Returns, it was the best movie to come out this summer. And I agree that Pirates 2 and X-Men 3 were the biggest wastes of time ever!
chowderhead | 12/18/2006, 5:00 pm EST
Decent list. Best movie of the year? Big Love on HBO…
Best Of What Sucked Less | 12/18/2006, 10:30 pm EST
This was a horrible year for movies. Even though last year wasn’t a big box office year, at least there was some quality movies.
It’s bad when the top ten list is full of movies that you haven’t seen, because you weren’t inspired enough to go to see them at the theater. I might catch most of the list at the video store or on cable. The only two on the best list I won’t see is “Babel” and “Borat”. Both movies think they are more clever than they are.
My big complaint is the worst list. “X-Men 3″ was a solid comic book movie. “Snakes On A Plane” was one of my favorite movie this year. It had one thing that all the movies released this year didn’t have. A lack of pretension. It was great to see a movie and not have what moviemakers think is something deep or meaningful repeated over and over again like you are a special ed. student. I’m hoping that ‘07 will be a better year for movies.
Topher | 12/19/2006, 3:14 am EST
Top 10 List:
10: Stranger Than Fiction
9: World Trade Center
8. Slither
7. Casino Royale
6. Lucky # Slevin
5. Flags Of Our Fathers
4. V For Vendetta
3. Thank You For Smoking
2. An Inconvenient Truth
1. Little Miss Sunshine
Michael | 12/19/2006, 10:13 am EST
So by your(Rolling Stone) reckoning Basic Instinct 2 was BETTER than X3??!! Come on!! X3 might not have been a great movie, it was good though and doesn’t belong on the Worst list at all!
Carlos Dominguez | 12/19/2006, 4:01 pm EST
I just dont understand “Bobby” as the worst of the year. All credibility is lost. Emilio Estevez didnt get the props he deserved. Although i agree with “The Departed” as the best flick of 2006, but “Borat” in to 10? This movie sucked. I am glad that “Casino Royale” wasnt included, another huge let down. But what shock’S me the most about all critics top 10 is the absence of “The Descent”. One of the best, most solid horror films in years if not this decade so far. But then again “Hostel” was box office hit (maybe the worst movie i have ever seen) and that says alot about American movie going audiences.
Alex | 12/20/2006, 1:17 pm EST
Thank You so much rolling stone for putting Dreamgirls on that list! In my oppinion it should be number 1! This movie is going to go down a classic! All of the actors, especially the females, Beyonce and JHud, WOW! OUTSTANDING!
RB | 12/20/2006, 8:09 pm EST
I appreciate that Peter Travers’ reviews always value originality.
my list:
the departed, v for vendetta, little miss sunshine, blood diamond, borat, babel, the prestige.
havent seen dreamgirls, the queen, united 93, or iwo jima
Kevin | 12/20/2006, 9:43 pm EST
How could you ignore one of the greatest films EVER, that turned out to be Altman’s last?
gogustin | 12/20/2006, 10:40 pm EST
Prairie Home Companion, glad it was on the top list. It was filled to the rim with entertainment. There are a few on the list that I will have to see.
The worst list….why would you say that The Lady in the Water deserved to be on that list? Doesn’t creativity and descent execution count for anything?
gogustin | 12/20/2006, 10:47 pm EST
and I would agree with some of the other comments that “V for Vandetta” was a really cool flick that hasn’t gotten enough credit although it was from 2005 so that blows that.
Shaun | 12/23/2006, 3:07 pm EST
Of Snakes on a Plane you say “audiences rightly spit venom on it” but does a 56 million take on a 32 million budget really qualify as failing at the box office? Terrible though it may have been NO ONE can see a movie with this title and expect anything more.
And I will gladly sit alone in the room for people who found the Departed to be an overblown, poorly directed bore. Marty may deserve an Ocsar but not for anything he did in this decade.
Mike Harward-SLC, UT | 12/23/2006, 6:24 pm EST
You PT’s good at what he does when he verifies what you know in your heart to be true and in one swift motion rips it out.
Mike Harward-SLC, UT | 12/23/2006, 6:28 pm EST
You KNOW PT’s good…(forgive me I am typing with a hook and why did I put my location with my name?)
Will G. | 12/25/2006, 9:23 am EST
Where was wordplay? They took a very boring subject and made it into a sports movie that was better than Invincible. I pretty much agree on all your picks except for worsts of the year. Here are mine in no particular order: Invincible, John Tucker Must Die, My Super Ex- Girlfriend, Last Holiday, The Break-Up, and last but not least… Dead Man’s Chest was the biggest dissapointment of all time! I would also like to see your review of the Tenacious D movie which in my opinion was as funny as Borat.
Tom | 12/25/2006, 10:34 am EST
I enjoyed both Bobby and Da Vinci Code. To have those 2 in the top 10 worst films of the year? Come on. Give me a break. Especially with Da Vinci Code. What was wrong with that movie?
Tiago | 12/25/2006, 4:49 pm EST
I enjoyed x-men and click. What was wrong with those movies?
Rodrigo Arenas | 12/25/2006, 10:38 pm EST
What about “V of Vendetta”, one of the most dangerous films of the decade? A movie that makes you want to stand up and kill your president, no matter where you live? And what about Binoche performance in “Hidden”? Yes, I know that you americans gave her an Oscar years ago, but Juliette Binoche already entered the kingdom of the top ten actresses of all time…..
Nix | 12/27/2006, 10:53 pm EST
The Dreamgirls is number 2? Christ this remake made the first seem Oscar caliber. I would have picked An Inconvenient Truth, Street Fight, The Road to Guantanamo and Who Killed the Electric Car?. I like a movie that teaches me something and isn’t stupid.
cbutterb | 12/27/2006, 11:37 pm EST
Wordplay as a runner-up for best doc, with An Inconvenient Truth as the best.
Actually, is there any reason a documentary can’t be in the overall top 10? With the gravity of the subject matter and the humane and encouraging way it was handled–and with the catapulting of Al Gore to rock-star status–An Inconvenient Truth ought to be in there. Certainly it’s more memorable and important that that Garrison Keilor smarm-fest that *spoilers* ends with an angel killing a businessman because he has the audacity to live in the real world instead of some make-believe NPR fiddle-off.

7. United 93
8. Clerks II

Good to see Borat at only #8. I thought it was a bit overrated(still hilarious) and everyone just seemed to be getting caught up in the hype!
Damien | 12/28/2006, 7:36 am EST
I find Peter Travers to be a pretentious wanker. I have never purchased nor read a Rolling Stone magazine, and after this poorly written and generally insulting article, I can safely say the aforementioned events are not likely to occur in the near future. Peter’s ignorance of good film and his choosing of the “non-conformist” movies really does disgust me.
R.B. Shea | 12/28/2006, 8:02 am EST
as best film of the year tells me Travers taste is more determined by celebrity than real cinematic knowledge and critical skills.
Pop goes the culture.
Dwanna | 12/28/2006, 10:38 am EST
What about “V for Vendetta?” Wrong, too, on Bobby, a well thought out, well written, superbly directed movie that was long overdue.
Chailife77 | 12/28/2006, 3:22 pm EST
Now, here’s an interesting film left off of EVERYONE’s 10 Best Lists (and I do mean *everyone*): Blood Diamond. Did the diamond industry threaten critics with their lives enough to keep it off the lists? It really was good. And, for a change, I can actually say that Leo deserves an Oscar.
David | 12/28/2006, 4:02 pm EST
“The Descent” kept me up for three nights straight. And I thought I was immune to fright at this point after dulling my sense with way too many horror flicks. Just out of this world incredible.
V | 12/29/2006, 11:59 am EST
I’m surprised the top 10 list leaves off what was the best movie of the year “A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints”
Departed was very good due to great acting.
Babel seemed contrived and too far-fetched at times.
Little Children deserves to be somewhere in the top 5.
Arthur Kaliel | 12/30/2006, 7:20 pm EST
Top 3
1. V for Vendetta…
2. Apocalpto
3. Little Miss Sushine..
Cherries | 12/31/2006, 1:09 pm EST
Ok i just want to say that the best movie list i haven’t seen one of them! which is odd beacause i make it to the movies a couple times a month and own over a 1000 so they must have not even looked appealing enough in the preveiws to make me go see it. Also the Da vinci code was an amazing movie click wasn’t that bad either a little slow and something a little different than the basic adam sandler film but it was still good not at all one of the worst movies of 2006. however the year in my opinon was a huge let down and 2007 doesn’t look much better but we can always hope!
scott | 12/31/2006, 2:24 pm EST
Peter Travers just went along with his critic buddies and named the “usual suspects” Doesn’t the guy have any original ideas?
Dennis | 1/2/2007, 3:44 am EST
Great job Travers; I enjoyed reading your diverse list of films. I do not buy into The Queen as much as every other critic keeps hailing it – it’s good, but not great. It’s turning out to be this year’s Sideways and Lost In Translation : overhyped. Children of Men might be one of the most thrilling, profound, and utterly moving films I have ever seen. The cinematography alone is the best ever put on screen. Cuaron does work that maybe only Spielberg can reach – it’s truly of work of gutsy art.
Megan | 1/2/2007, 10:30 pm EST
I can not believe that click i son the worst movie list… it was an amazing movie and adam sandler was great in it…
ed | 1/3/2007, 12:24 pm EST
Several other people have posted comments questioning the accolades bestowed upon “The Departed”. It pleases me to know I am not alone in my belief that the film is the most over-rated piece of garbage I have seen in a long time. If Travers or any one of the countless critics who inexplicably decided to abandon all jounalistic integrity by liking this film honestly believe it has value, you first have put it alongside Scorcese’s triumphs(Goodfellas,Raging Bull). How is that unfair? Why shouldn’t Scorcese be held to the standard he set for himself with those cinematic masterpieces? I imagine no one in their right mind would dispute the superiority of those films to this latest Scorcese atrocity, but for some reason everyone and their mother is blowing this film. Could the reception to this film be a reminder that the methamphetamine epidemic is far more widespread than it was originally thought to be? Yes. The only way you like this movie is if you cranked a couple magnum lines in parking lot of you local cine-plex.
LindsayLou | 1/6/2007, 4:08 pm EST
What I can’t get over is the failure to mention Children of Men in either the top 10 list, or the honourable mentions. By far the best movie of the year. I saw Borat, Little Miss Sunshine, Departed, etc, and by far the two movies that most stuck with me days after? Children of Men and Casino Royale. Isn’t that the sign of a good movie, when you still think about it weeks later? While Borat was hilarious, the minute I walked out of the theatre, I completely forgot most of the movie (except that naked wrestling scene; that one scarred me for life!) and I never know what people are talking about when they make references to lines from the movie. On the other hand, I can still hear Ruby Tuesday playing in Jasper’s house in the forest in Children of Men.
Kevin L. | 1/7/2007, 6:42 pm EST
I found this top 10 list really good actually, though I’m one of the anti-Babel crowd. Even though it was good, especially on the acting side it was still pretty much an overrated, overdramatic and inconsistent mess in my opinion. When the best story of the movie is the one who has less links with the other three, you know there’s a problem in your narrative structure.
Here’s my top 10 :
1. Children of Men
2. Little Miss Sunshine
3. The Queen
4. Science of Sleep
5. The Fountain
6. The Departed
7. Jesus Camp
8. Volver
9. A Prairie Home Companion
10. Borat

My list:
1. Children of Men
2. An Inconvenient Truth
3. V for Vendetta
4. Superman Returns
5. Borat
6. Inside Man
7. Casino Royale
8. Thank You For Smoking
9. Talledega Nights
10. Slither
Jake | 1/7/2007, 10:26 pm EST
I dont think that X-men 2 and The Davinci Code were that bad. The Davinci Code had nothing on the book, but i dont think it deserves to be on the worst movies list. i do agree though with the departed #1
Mitch | 1/13/2007, 4:20 am EST
k, when i went to see casino royal, i wasnt expecting much becausre of the last one. but it blew me away because they had a guy who liked the part. not only was the acting good but the script was genius, it didnt need any over the top gadgets or 20 minute car chases to make it good. seriously i thought this was one of the best movies in the past 10 years.
heres my top ten
1. Casino Royal
2.V for Vendetta
3. The Prestige
4. the departed
5.children of man
6.jack ass 2 (it was good)
7. farenheit 9/11
8. 40 year old virgin
9. wedding crashers
10. borat
E goddess | 1/13/2007, 11:34 am EST
Top movie of the year which I am going to see again today is hands down, “Dreamgirls”.
So much energy, so very big screen and oh my that Hudson has stolen my heart.I will own this DVD. And thank you for giving us a new face with depth.
Runners up:
Borat…I have had more laughs over this than I can remember. Wawawewa!Another DVD buy.
Casino Royale-lone wolf Craig is really not super handsome but deadly. Something for everything.
I have still to see P.Cruz in Volver but Helen Mirren in Queen was very real very cold. I would say overall a B+.
“Letters from Iwo Jima” had a quiet reverence to it but I was a lone female in an audience of mostly old geezers. This movie informs big time…but several people did leave before the end.
I need to see “Pan” and the Departed but many women refuse to see violence on the big screen. So I have to do this alone.
“The Good Shepherd”….not exactly a snoozer but obtuse…and hard to follow. No fresh faces here either.
That’s it!

I love almost all of your movie pics. I agree with you, i think you have picked out many of the greatest i.e. Departed, Little Miss Sunshine, Dreamgirls, etc.. But come on, Borat? It was so gross. Yes, sometimes he borders on genius especially when he is exposing the prejudices of the wacko underbelly of America (i.e. the church scene, frat boys, the rodeo scene). But it is when he is gross just to be gross that makes no sense (crapping in NY, naked fat wrestling). He is proving nothing other than that he can be super nasty. Oh big deal, the chick who got the bag of poop tried to help him. It doesn’t say anything about her, he is taking advantage of someone trying to keep their cool during an exceptionally weird moment. It is all shock value. Wow, did we all just regress to 10 year olds who write the new best movies of the year? I do agree, there is some wonderful stuff there, but when the other half of the movie is just plain nasty to be nasty, how can Rolling Stone magazine decide it is one of the top 10 best movies of the year! Yuck. I think people are saying they like it so much because they think if they say they like it then they can look at people who don’t and say, “you just don’t get it” and have this I am so evolved you can’t even get it attitude. Or did someone see it on another top 10 list and was afraid they would be labeled prude if you didn’t add it. Is this the joke of the year? I’m not saying I don’t enjoy his humor etc., but we all knew that half of America is full of idiots. I didn’t need Cohen to tell me that (although I think that stuff is pretty funny). But mostly, when you put in shots of hairy ballsack with no reason, why? Why ruin a good thing with gross? And fine, a movie is a movie. Some parts were fun, and some sucked, I let it go after walking out of the theater. But now, I am seeing this on Rolling Stones TOP TEN!!!!!!!!!!! YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING!!!!????? When half of a movie is part smart and the other half is just plain tacky and distasteful, that movie should definitely not be a top ten movie of the year. The whole movie should be good. And this one is half crap. Literally. I am disgusted by your ill-concieved choice.

I’m very curious as to why “Rocky Balboa” wasn’t held in higher regard. The Characters eminence(fictional or not) is everlasting.Sly Stallone resurrected Rocky one last time in what I thought was one of the more sentimental greats of the year.

Im not someone who watch alot of TV, but I really loved Click –Or was it because i recognized my dad there? :/

I completely agree with The Departed and most of this list, though I do think there’s two movies that were forgotten. Pan’s Labyrinth was the most moving and beautiful film I have seen in years. Casino Royale was a fun, heady buzz of a movie, never taking itself too seriously, but injecting new life into the rather stale Bond franchise. As far as the worst list goes, I’ve got to say Wedding Crashers was the most inane, recycled, sorry excuse for a movie. You, Me and Dupree was pretty awful too.

Where the hell is Pirates of the Carribean 2?
How can you NOT put it in the top 10?!

Congrats on your pandering to the the other critics and going with public opinion as dictated to them by the other critics. You are real origional thinkers. But hey, you are the brainwashing media after all. Why should you be any different than your customers. My biggest problem with your list: United 93. What a wonderful work of FICTION that had absolutely nothing to do with 9/11 except as a vehicle to make money off of tragedy.

What about the great movies that were less commercial? #1 The Science of Sleep #2 The Fountain #3 Shut Up & Sing

Apparently this list was finalized before Children of Men saw wide release. Still, no excuse. CoM is pretty easily the best movie I’ve seen all DECADE, much less last year.

Americanboy | 2/24/2007, 12:27 am EST
The Departed is definitely one of the best films in 2006 however i disagree with your comment on how it “sparks something fresh in Scorsese.” The entire script was borrowed from Hong Kong’s Infernal Affairs 1- 3. The moive should give proper credit to the orginal script writers. However, he do get credits for introducing an american version of the story.

omg, the da vanci code was DEFINATELY a good movie. y would you put it under the WORST MOVIES?!
u r weird | 3/10/2007, 6:29 pm EST
i agree with Lord Mark, for the most part. Dream Girls was awesome, which u were rite about. But, u were wrong on…the da vinci code, click, etc.

The Departed was a gargantuan disappointment! I can’t believe so many people are raving about it, maybe because it was by the “great Martin Scorsese”?! Regardless, I was completely let down, and not only is it one of the worst movies of 2006/07, but one of the worst of all time.
chelseaa | 3/30/2007, 11:04 am EST
snakes on a plane was a good movie! so was click :]]

I disagree with most of your list. Firstly, how the hell could you not have Pan’s Labyrinth in the top ten? IMO, it’s No. 1 movie of ‘06. There’s no way in the world I would ever put DreamGirls at no. 2, I wouldn’t even have it in my top 10.
The Departed is a good movie, but for me, I didn’t get the whole “WOW AMAZING” from it.. it was just another remake, a really good remake for a change, but still just a remake. When I saw the original, Infernal Affairs, was when I thought, ‘wow what an amazing, complex story and was really really well played out’ I loved it. But Departed was just a reincarnation of that added with disgusting language and uneeded violence.
I’m also astounded you didn’t have Children of Men, easily 2nd best movie of 06 for me.
But honestly, completely disappointed you didn’t even have Pan’s Labyrinth in there. When I got to number 3, I was already planning to rave on about how it should be in the top 3, but god I didn’t know it wasn’t going to be in the list at all!! I really am disappointed with your list.

I roughly agree with 50 percent of your list, its major being the inability to veer from the mainstream. While in essence you are a mainstream publication, it would behoove your readers to hear of the musical wonders of “Idlewile” over the over-publicized “Dream Girls.” Or have a greater representation of foreign film, which you began to show with a nod at “Volver”, a truly outstanding example of Latin film, but could have solidified with through recognizing “Pan’s Labyrinth,” or “After the Wedding,” to name a few.
I agree with a top spot for “The Departed,” as I found it to be everything it was hyped to be; however, stepping outside the typical and placing an independent film such as “Conversations with Other Women,” at number one would have shown more cinematic ingenuity.
I would have outright taken “United 93″ and “Babel,” for its half hearted attempt at an international “Crash,” off the list. Another point of contention is your assessment of “Lady in the Water” as one of the worst films of the year. It was not intended to be a continuation of “Sixth Sense” thriller, and once you realize it more closely aligned with a fantastical bedtime story, the film was pure brilliance.

I saw all of the top ten movies listed by Travers.
Dreamsgirls was really lousy and I am really shocked it even made the top 10, and should have been replaced by Pans Labrynith, which was the best movie of 2006, bar none(of the ones that I saw). I still haven’t seen “Lives of Others” which also got great reviews. “United 93″ is overrated, it is good , but it isn’t that good.

Pan’s Labyrinth wasn’t in the top 10!! It was the best movie of 2006….not for the costumes by the way, the entire film was outstanding.
A masterpiece!
Who picked these films anyway?
Most of the list i agree with( not dreamgirls and others that people have mentioned already)but not all of them. Pan’s Labyrinth should be number one!
