Are You Taking Notes? Axl vs. Former Manager Saga Gets Complicated

12/15/06, 4:49 pm EST

Merck Axl

If you’ve been following the Chinese Democracy drama, you know that — in an interview with this magazine — Mercuriadis promised the album would be out sometime this year, and made good use of the now infamous “There are 13 Tuesdays left in the year” phrase. We now know that Axl — who has proven himself to be surprisingly literate and professional in the last 24 hours — was also aware of Mercuriadis’ comments as he quoted them in a letter he wrote to his fans, announcing that Mercuriadis has been fired and declaring a tentative release date of March 6th for G N’ R’s new album, Chinese Democracy.

Now Mercuriadis — perhaps similarly surprised by the sophistication and general level-headedness revealed by Axl’s statement — has released his own statement (full text after the jump) in which he, among other things, claims he wrote some of Axl’s letter and refers to his Rolling Stone-printed comments as “facetious.”

Look, guys: We’re not getting involved. We of course continue to find this back-and-forth fascinating and will totally be blogging about every exchange, but we’re not even touching that “facetious” comment. You two are plenty amusing all by yourselves.

An Open Letter To Guns N’ Roses Fans From Merck Mercuriadis

Along with all of the other Guns N’ Roses fans around the world I read “An Open Letter To The Fans From Axl” this evening with much interest. About half way through it occurred to me that I had read much of this before. In fact, I had written the blueprint for it in an email for Axl’s attention two days ago which I have copied below.

The reality is all of this year’s touring was planned and agreed between Axl and myself, with a view to the album being in the stores before the 31st of December ‘06. This was confirmed by Axl in numerous interviews – most famously at the MTV Video Music Awards. We planned the tour in February, just after Axl’s birthday and we were supposed to finish the album in May, before it started. We sent our engineers to New York, where we all waited, for over a month, for the muse to come but she never arrived. We then scheduled sessions in London in August and had our engineers meet us there at the end of the English tour. August came and went and once again the muse did not show. We postponed our proposed radio date of Labour Day for the first single and we came back to LA and tried to finish before the San Francisco, Las Vegas and Los Angeles shows but yet again she eluded us. Axl then asked me to postpone the North American tour which was due to start on 24th of September by a month and finally, early in that period after the euphoria of Inland Invasion, Axl made a break through and got two or three very productive days under his belt.

At this point we were very excited as Axl’s feeling was that we had two or three days of work left to tidy things up and we still had three weeks before the tour started, so we were in good shape. Unfortunately the muse disappeared just as fast as she came and the tour started with no single at radio to support it and the album still needing two or three days of work. Despite this, it was a break through period as Robin, Bumblefoot and Frank had all made important contributions to the album that made it even stronger. By the way none of the above is meant as a criticism of Axl. It is the reality of trying to create something special under incredible pressure from the public – that wants and DEMANDS the record – and the record industry – that NEEDS it. The creative process is not something you can dictate and Axl is a true artist.

At this time I seriously considered postponing the start of the tour, again, as the album was of paramount importance but the reality was that our historic track record left us with very little good will with you, the fans, and we needed the money to be able to complete the album and keep the band alive. We scheduled sessions in New York and once again sent the engineers there for the first two weeks of November while the tour was based there – but the hectic touring schedule meant nothing got done. The record company refused to conclude the renegotiation until we were ready to hand over the finished album and refused to prepare a marketing campaign or commission video treatments until they had it in their hands. This is still their position as of this week.

At this point despite the success of many of the dates on the tour the pressure on all of us became unbearable. While some of Axl’s letter is disappointing – As John Lennon once asked Paul McCartney “How Do You Sleep?” – until you have walked a mile in his shoes you cannot begin to comprehend the pressure he is under. I know I sleep well at night in the knowledge that when Chinese Democracy hits the streets in March that it is in large part down to my efforts over the last almost 5 years. I found the money and the motivation to keep Axl and the band alive and get the record made when everyone else had given up and walked away. We worked as a team united to make Chinese Democracy a reality. In the end the album will speak for itself but our relationship could not survive the pressure.

I have no regrets. I believe Chinese Democracy is one of the best albums ever made, Axl Rose is one of the greatest vocalists and front men and the new Guns N’ Roses (which kicks the shit out of the old) is one of the greatest bands. What we accomplished in 2006 only hints at what is to come.

I believe in Axl Rose. I am the artist’s manager and it is my responsibility and job to take the heat. I promise you Chinese Democracy is worth it and you should keep the faith. I will walk away knowing I have done my best and that next year will see Axl recognized not only as a great singer and rock icon but as one of the greatest artists of all time.

Merry Christmas and all the best to you for 2007!

Merck Mercuriadis

PS I apologize to all the fans irked by my facetious comments regarding the release date to Rolling Stone magazine. They were meant to poke fun at a magazine that had announced a definitive release date, causing us all lots of grief, when none had been set. Unfortunately many of you took them to heart and for that I am sorry.

Begin forwarded message:

From: Merck Mercuriadis
Date: 12 December 2006 14:11:02 GMT-08:00
Subject: Album Press Release

Regardless of the issues that exist between Axl and myself I believe it is important for an announcement on the album to be put out this week and at the same time cover the cancellation of the 5 shows in January. Further to this I have thought about the album release date taking into account the issues between Axl and myself and my view is that the album should be set for release on the 20th of March rather than the 6th of February. March 20th is the first day of Spring and a positive day. This allows for three months to set it up properly around the world without unmanageable pressure and for it to be well imbedded in the market place before the summer lull sets in. It also allows for the deal to be done with the label and any change in Management etc which may be made to be made as well as detailed meetings on the touring which on this basis would start in Dubai just before the album’s release. The note will be most effective if it comes from Axl as he will then be seen as the good guy who is giving people the information they want. Having said that it could come from either Howard or myself or both of us. I have presented two options the first not giving a release date and the second one stating it. The message would be posted as the lead story on gunsnroses.com and we would then point all of the media there. I would appreciate it if you would all let me know your thoughts on all of this keeping in mind that this is a work in progress.

Option 1

Merry Christmas To You All

We are into the last week of the tour and Christmas is almost here so I wanted to take the time not only to wish you Merry Christmas but to also explain why CHINESE DEMOCRACY is not under your tree or in the stores as we wanted it would be. We read the papers and we know you want – demand! – news. We have been in the final stages of renegotiating our deal with our record label and it has been a long slow process – not unlike making the record! The discussion started over a year ago but did not become serious until they started hearing the mixes. Everyone involved has worked hard to get the deal completed so we could get the record out this month but a few weeks ago it became obvious that was not going to happen. We then held out as we wanted to at least be able to give you the release date before Christmas but unfortunately we are still not there yet. This is not meant to spark a hate campaign on the label. This is an unusual and complicated situation as we have worked a long time on this album and it is important to us to make sure that everything including the deal is right. At the same time it is a business that has to work for everyone involved. We have all – you included – waited a long time for this and this is not the time to compromise. The first news you will hear from us in 2007 will be to announce the album’s release date. Without the album out it does not make sense to do the 5 shows we have scheduled for January in isolation so they are being cancelled and we will focus on getting the album out. Until that time we want to thank you for all of your support in 2006 and wish you all the best for the holidays and a happy new year.

W. Axl Rose

We then held out on making an announcement as we wanted to at least be able to give you the release date before Christmas so here it is. Chinese Democracy will be released on the 20th of March in the US and Canada – the first day of Spring and a time for new beginnings! – and on the 19th of March everywhere else in the world. Without the album out it does not make sense to do the 5 shows we have scheduled for January in isolation so they are being cancelled and we will focus on getting the album out. We want to thank you for all of your support in 2006 and wish you all the best for the holidays and a happy new year. We look forward to seeing you in 2007!

the finger pointing at YODA is not YODA…only YODA is YODA…

Lopez817 | 12/15/2006, 5:27 pm EST

Fuck Axl Rose! All this man wants is attention and hype since he’s been out of the spotlight for more than a decade. I wouldn’t be surprised if this album sucks. Axl can’t even keep his voice together for few shows, so what makes anyone believe he still got it?

Karma | 12/15/2006, 5:39 pm EST

Who fucking cares……Axl is a washed up old fuck!

Mott the Hoople | 12/15/2006, 5:51 pm EST

Who cares. This isn’t 1991 anymore.

jordan | 12/15/2006, 5:53 pm EST

This album will suck. Building up this much hype is a double sided sword.

In the end it’s just fucking music and nobody is going to be altered when the hear the new GnR.

Frankly, RS is making this an issue or more of an issue than necessary.

If Axel Rose was prosponing the cure for aids this past decade, then I can see this being news and important. But it’s an album. It’s an album with a lead singer from a rock group that was pretty good back in the day, until better bands came and destroyed them.

SpUd_Jr | 12/15/2006, 5:57 pm EST

So many ignorant Axl haters on this site.

Here’s an idea, actually WATCH a video one of this years shows, or LISTEN to one of the demos.

Anonymous | 12/15/2006, 6:03 pm EST

Do you think either of these losers really cares about the fans? Grow up. They’re already paid and will make a bit more to snort up their noses once this album drops.

They keep stringing their loser fans along their loser paths.

GN'R | 12/15/2006, 6:04 pm EST

Fuck you all. If you hate Axl why even read the articleand post pointless messages. And his voice is better then ever. Chinese Democracy will blow your minds just wait!!!!!!!

blanonymous | 12/15/2006, 6:13 pm EST

axl’s forehead is fucking huge.

huge.

actually been at a concert!!!! | 12/15/2006, 6:21 pm EST

everyone that been at a concert to see GN´R this year knows that Axl is STILL a Rock god! stop critize him so much.. he is a troubled soul but he´s an artist that makes the best music ever written! If you dont´ like Axl or the rest of the band just shut the fuck up then.. no one are interested in your stubid comments anyway!

I hoped my grammar/spelling were right.. *from sweden*

belive me Axl is the one that will have the last laugh!

Big Wave Rider | 12/15/2006, 6:32 pm EST

Just stop fucking about and put out the goddam album so everyone can agree they are shit and forget about them once and for all…

Axl>Everything | 12/15/2006, 6:49 pm EST

Axl is godder then god and all the hater are either wiggers or penis loving ass jockeys.

Fuzzbucket | 12/15/2006, 7:10 pm EST

All I know is that the music speaks for itself. Just the leaks show that the album will be incredible. So no matter how much whining people do about how Axl’s washed up won’t matter once it’s released. These people that hate Axl are gonna have a shitty year next year, cause Gn’R will be megastars once again in 07.

petercoffin.com | 12/15/2006, 9:11 pm EST

Axl is one of those weird instances that people never stop talking about. Plus, he’s apparently very literate. Good for him.

Bring the album. I’ll listen.

What's Happening? | 12/15/2006, 9:25 pm EST

No Roger, No Re-Run, No Chinese Democracy.

lol | 12/15/2006, 9:47 pm EST

I’m just laughing at the guy who said Axl wants the spotlight back because he’s been gone 10 years. He CHOSE to be gone. He avoided the press. He chose to be reclusive. One of the few interviews he did, he flat out said that most celebs could avoid the press if they wanted, for all their bitching, by simply not going to the trendy clubs. All the guy wants to do is make the music HE wants to make, without infighting etc. He may be a control freak, but he’s never been a whore for the spotlight.

Seth | 12/15/2006, 10:23 pm EST

I’m starting a betting pool to see when Axl’s new Guns will break up. Wanna join in?

axl rose has a good voice, and not a single other good quality.

I’m a long time gnr fan but i find it very hard to believe it will ever come out. I think the record industry needs Chinese Democracy because rock has been dead since cobain killed himself. I am tired of the pseudo rock that is played on the radio and tv. With 1 or 2 exceptions every good rock band has disbanded or decided to make crap just to sell albums, ie metallica(Thats coming from a metallica fan). For me its put up or shut up, if its not out in march then i’m not gonna care anymore because the 4 albums they did produce are good enough for me. I want to see this album because you know there is stuff recorded and mixed and just not getting released. I just wish that slash and izzy were there. we all knew duff and matt sorum were replaceable

AXL
God Bless you Brother
In my oppinion AXL is Elvis Jim Morrison, but most importantly, Axl is Axl. Im just happy is Axl and is alive and performing. Appreciate what we got. And if you remember right. The world took it for granted that Elvis would always be there and then he was gone. Be a fan, live and let die man… Be thankful we have an Axl Rose… John Sorkness

sammy spear | 12/16/2006, 7:33 am EST

axl and gnr can just go away. never liked them and still don’t. the stalling tactic is because he has nothing new for an album, just the same old overworked dregs that made up all the other gnr albums.

Just browsing R.S. over a beer | 12/16/2006, 7:35 am EST

Dear Mr. Rose,

This is all in respect.

As a fan I have been there for almost 20 year for GNR.

As a fan I have believed that you would carry the torch into a new era for GNR.

As a fan I have stood by your every move with vicious pride

As a fan I have tried to accept the fact you are a tortured artist with a perfectionist side that only wants to put out a masterpiece.

As a fan you have canceled two concerts for me and I stood by your decision only becaause I have felt you made the decision from your heart.

As a fan I saw you walk out at the MTV music awards and present a good new band. (The Killers)

As a fan I put aside the fact you completly devastated verbally one of my favorite bands of all time because you felt disrespected (NIRVANA)

As a fan I have been defending you in rock circles as the Greatest frontman of all time.

Axl, I am the lead singer of one of the biggest rock acts currently in music today.

Axl I want you to unleash the masterpiece you have spent over 15 million dollars to write, record, produced and laboured over for 10 plus yrs to the world.

I have heard it and I feel it is the most amazing album I have heard since appetite, actually, (and I can see your head getting bigger) I think this record is better than if you pick the best song from the 2 Illusion and had released them (November Rain, Civil War etc.)

I feel your new line up is even better than the original.

I believe the original line up is what GNR is, but the new line up musically, professionaly(sp) and technically are more dedicated to bringing us GNR’s legendary sound. Ummm they are more capable, is the best way to say it.

I have played with Robin and he is truly amazing.

In closing, release your masterpiece, it’s ready.

Gotta say tell Bach to beat it, you are a rock legend that should surronded with other legends.

Bach had one of the greatest voices ever to record hard rock or Metal, but he is now just hanging on cause he realizes come March 16th he will be in the front of the release with you even though he is not contributing to anything that is constructed to very secure camp of GNR loyals. You have many friends, I watched you walk into back stage at the MTV music awards and 15 yrs after Illusions you are still the biggest thing bacstage. Everyone just clears the path.

Thats how important you still are.

Just get it out there, it will sell, it has prob 4 to 5 garunteed singles and I believe the finished Madagascar sounds better than November Rain ever did. I also believe that they are the best lyrics you have ever wrote.

Josh from Queens is a dear friend of mine and I wished you never went there verbally with them, even though we all agree, it was prob the best smack in rock history.

In conclusion even though I have tried to close once, My band will finish the opening part of your tour.

We will blow YOUR HARDCORE FANS AWAY, that are in your seats 2 hrs till showtime, and plus you will have friends opening for you.

I will leave an email address right here so you can have the tour manager conatct me, I believe it will be quite exciting for the fans to see us give the greatest hard rock front man in history intro’s into ther show with the same passion an perfectionism GNR demands.

I look forward to hearing from you

kic klips off@y ahoo. com

sincerly,

A fan/artist that is waiting to go to war with the brilliant GNR

I know they havent and won’t accept you apology to open anymore for you.

when axl rose will be gone the rock n roll world will never be the same -love him or hate him

BODI | 12/16/2006, 1:19 pm EST

It seems Axl stuck his neck out on the line with his “it is this year” comment and is sincerely dissapointed with end of 06. I am kind of glad they are going to promote Chinese Democracy though, if people know its coming out, they will buy it. Velvet Revolver went #1 with little promo simply because of the GNR connection.

charliemapleton | 12/16/2006, 1:25 pm EST

Three words GNR:ISLAND DEF JAM.They successfully and wholehartedly support and manage the careers and superstar qualities of not only r&b/hip hop acts, but ROCK bands as well.Try giving Kevin,Rick,or Jay Z a call at some point.

Aaron D. | 12/16/2006, 2:01 pm EST

Claiming that the new lineup “beats the shit” out of the old one is quite a lofty claim, as Slash is one of the best guitarists in all of hard rock, past or present. I still woundn’t call it GnR.

john | 12/16/2006, 3:04 pm EST

GUNS N ROSES!!!!!!!! WILL DOMINATE IN 2007!!!!!!!! DOMINATE!!!!!!!!

Ryan | 12/16/2006, 7:11 pm EST

axl rose is a fucking attention wanting douchbag. i don’t care how old he is, i love bands that are in there 60s/late 50s now and i don’t see them bitching constantly. his career is just a joke now, gnr is nothing without slash, and this is coming from a person who hates gnr in general

Macross | 12/16/2006, 7:45 pm EST

Ive been to several of the new Guns shows and they are amazing. I love the old Guns, but they are in a band I equally love called Velvet Revolver and the past is the past. I cant wait till march 6th. Welcome back, Mr. Rose. Rock has missed you so.

Macross | 12/16/2006, 7:46 pm EST

The new Guns is amazing. i love the old Guns, but they are now Velvet Revolver and they rule. Welcome back Mr. Rose.

Axl Blows and GNR is the most overrated bunch of has beens to ever be hyped to death by media scum+white trash 80’s losers Axl Go back to the hole you cliiiimded out of,Douchebag

NC GnR Fan | 12/17/2006, 1:58 am EST

After reading all of the useless drivel posted on this site I have to ask myself. . . Self, what are all of these people bitching about? If Axl and the boys make and release another album enjoy it. If you don’t like GnR buy something else. Whatever makes you happy! Music is meant to enjoy and the people making it are very talented and blessed. It seems to me that Axl is in Rolling Stone and you all are buying it.

God’s Speed Axl Rose, Keep on ROCKING!

Jim

ME | 12/17/2006, 3:05 am EST

I have to laugh at all the retards on here bashing Axl because once this album hits stores, they will have to buy it on sheer morbid curiousity alone. If not, oh well, they can go back to listening their Cold Play CD or listen to marshal mathers PISSWHINE about his ex- wife or mother in their parents basement. Hate all you want the only way this album can be topped is if the beatles get back together, and that will never happen. So, retards, SHUT UP, DEAL WITH IT, AND LISTEN TO AXL & THE BOYS PLAY REAL MUSIC, not this mainstream shit rolling stone writes about. CHINESE DEMOCRACY STARTS MARCH 6TH. GET ON BOARD OR FUCK OFF, RETARDS.

Don’t bother man. All axl fucktards will swear by their idol, no matter what.

Here’re some results we got from the Axl Pose army:

-No new “gnr” album in 16yrs+ –

What the lobotomized fans say: he’s writing something epic

What it really means: The guy is not a very creative or talented musician

-No original members-

What the lobotomized fans say: It’s still GnR, Axl is there dancing to the old songs

What it really means: We are seeing a cover group of a once great band

-Chinese democracy comes out this year-

What the lobotomized fans say: our idol is back!

What it really means: cash is running out, let’s pull a greatful dead.

chinese democracy?… don’t waste your time. never gonna happen.

never.

Oddjob | 12/17/2006, 12:57 pm EST

I actually didn’t find Axl’s letter all that literate. It was full of misspellings, grammar mistakes and overly complicated sentence structure that often clouded the actual meaning of what he was trying to say. It sounded like a man desperately trying to sound literate and intelligent, but came across as proof that this man is out of his mind and sheds light on why the album was never finished in 11 years or so.

Karma | 12/17/2006, 1:20 pm EST

“Axl’s letter” has been written by his lawyer : Howard Weitzman.

BODI | 12/17/2006, 1:39 pm EST

OddJob, full of misspellings? what statement did you read?

Juicy | 12/17/2006, 4:33 pm EST

Wow, Merck is midget. Axl can’t be 5′10″ with heels on, and he dwarfs Merck.

Open Letter to Guns N’ Roses:

Axl, make sure it’s going to be March 6 07. And this time around, make sure Guns do Indonesia. More than 10 years ago Metallica had the guts to come down to Jakarta. The closest you guys came was Singapore.

Sincerely,
Laur ens

we all know, axl included, that Chinese Democracy is gonna suck!

SANTA | 12/18/2006, 12:28 pm EST

theres no such chinese dem. just like theres no Santa. GROW UP people. Listen to some interviews that he did in RIO around 2001, he said he had a ton of songs finished. back in 99 he said he had 32 songs. move on folks and be happy that we have the old stuff and vids.

Do any of us remember how long the Use Your Illusions albums were constantly delayed? All the buzz was that it was going to be the greatest double album of all time and then it turned out to suck ass…

breakdown | 12/18/2006, 3:38 pm EST

chinese democracy is gonna suck, an the new cover band suck ass

breakdown | 12/18/2006, 3:43 pm EST

We are seeing a cover group of a once great band. even axl’s voice is not the same anymore

Larry David | 12/18/2006, 4:06 pm EST

Look at that picture of Axl & merck real close…..Aren’t they the two toughs that stole Kramer’s armoire on Seinfeld?

Hasselhoff | 12/18/2006, 4:11 pm EST

Regis Philbin and I are hoping that Axl & Company audition on America’s Got Talent! That way Axl can be smyted in front of millions by stars such as Moesha and myself (oh, and that british newspaper guy). By the way…I like to be called “The Muse”.
