Rolling Stone’s Best Bands On MySpace: Round Four

12/14/06, 5:50 pm EST

Rolling StoneYou guys clearly have the hang of this by now. Just a quick refresher: You nominate bands on our MySpace page, we comb through your nominations (ignoring any bands that have been nominated multiple times by the same person) and then we put five up every day this week. Your comments help us decide which of the five bands rocks the most (but you can’t nominate new bands for consideration in the comments section). Check out the full rules after the jump, but more importantly, listen to these band’s songs and let us know what you think.

  • Black Affair – “Japanese Happening”: www.myspace.com/blackaffair
  • Locksley – “Don’t Make Me Wait”: www.myspace.com/locksley
  • Ivy League – “London Bridges”: www.myspace.com/ivyleagueonline
  • The Beauty – “Abbi”: www.myspace.com/11845240
  • Chelsea Williams – “Undecided”: www.myspace.com/chelseawilliams

Remember, you only get ONE song to grab our attention. So choose the song that best exemplifies your sound. Here are the rules and regulations. READ THEM ALL BEFORE SUBMITTING:1) To enter, go to myspace.com/rollingstonemagazine. Click on the top blog entry, “Rolling Stone’s Best Bands on MySpace, 2006.”2) In the “Add Comment” box, type in your/the band’s name, the title of the ONE SONG you’re submitting, and your MySpace Web address. This is the ONLY place to submit your song. Any submissions via messages, comments on the main MySpace page, or RollingStone.com will not be considered.

3) You must submit by December 18th. After that, the blog post will be locked up, thus ending your ability to enter. So get your shit in gear.

4) When we say “Best Bands on MySpace,” we totally mean solo artists should enter too. Best MySpace Solo Artist has too many syllables, and it isn’t as catchy to say. But we love you guys, and you should submit your work.

5) You may only enter the contest once. Any artist that enters more than once will be disqualified.

6) Don’t submit a cover of someone else’s song. Only original songs will be considered. But if we like your submission and there’s a cover on your page, it’s no harm, no foul.

7) No HTML codes! It will be deleted, along with your submission.

8) Any blog comments not pertaining to the contest will be deleted.

9) Make sure the song you submit is loaded onto your MySpace music player and that it works. If it doesn’t work, you’re shit out of luck, ’cause we’re not going to check back later.

10) All submitted songs must have been loaded onto your MySpace music player no earlier than January 1st, 2006.

11) Only enter the contest by hitting “Add Comment” below. Any submission posted by hitting “Reply” to any other band’s submission will be ignored, then deleted. Don’t cut the line. We’ll listen to every submission.

12) No soliciting for your song or asking about the status of your song via messages, comments, e-mails, etc. If your song is among those chosen, we’ll let you know.

13) Other than those rules above, there are no rules!

Chelsea Williams has a rare, haunting immediacy in her voice that just keeps growing on you.

Chris Santos | 12/18/2006, 6:44 pm EST

Chelsea Williams is by far the best. That song Undecided is absolutely amazing. The composition and harmony is phenomenal. There are songs that are fun to listent to and others that relly hit you on a level that takes your breath away and Undecided is one of those songs.

Jared | 12/18/2006, 5:28 pm EST

Locksley wins. Hands down kick a**.

Locksley. That song will stick in your head for at least 18 1/2 hours, and you don’t even mind because it’s so goddamn good. Locksley is the best British-invasion revival band ever.

Chelsea Williams – “Undecided” is my pick

rooster | 12/17/2006, 9:32 pm EST

I think they all have redeeming qualities.

However, I do agree that the standout artist is Chelsea Williams.

kari | 12/17/2006, 9:30 pm EST

the ivy league, is pretty much the best band ever.

amie | 12/17/2006, 9:14 pm EST

I like Chelsea Williams and Locksley but if I have to only pick one it’s Chelsea

Meander | 12/17/2006, 9:06 pm EST

Okay, I came here not knowing any of them and listened to each song. I am a music lover with a varied taste in styles so here’s my review

1- Black Affair - It’s okay. Not peppy enough for the style, is it in slomo?
2- Locksley - Jet-ish? Pretty good but nothing ground breaking.
3- Ivy League - Interesting, cute. A little like old S&G. Not bad, but I lost interest before the song was over. Keep going guys.
4- The Beauty - What? I don’t get it.
5- Chelsea Williams - Pleasantly surprised This is original. I liked it. And she’s how old?

Chelsea Williams “Undecided” is a beautiful song. This is the winner!

Amy | 12/17/2006, 3:20 pm EST

locksley’s sound is addictive. how refreshing that these boys can be so upbeat and fun compared to their 20-something angsty, whiny peers.

sevenwrite | 12/17/2006, 2:55 pm EST

Chelsea Williams deserves the prize! She’s incredibly talented, beautiful, and a great songwriter!

Kitten | 12/17/2006, 2:40 pm EST

Chelsea Williams is the winner! Great artist!

Quinnish | 12/17/2006, 1:48 pm EST

I vote Ivy League – “London Bridges”.

Jerzy Lover a.k.a Travis | 12/17/2006, 1:32 pm EST

Jerzy Jung is by far the best solo artist around, not just on myspace. Her lyrics are original, meaningful, and profound w/o the pop-chart cheese — and they should be, because they materialize from her personal and collective experiences. Her words and expressive nature are tangible in a way that so few artists have a talent for. Jerzy pours her heart and passion into her lyrics and is equally as devoted to the music. Even if she doesn’t win this contest, she still represents (and will someday be recognized publicly) as one of the few, great solo artists of all time.

Teddy | 12/17/2006, 1:12 pm EST

CHELSEA WILLIAMS ALL THE WAY!!!

Knife-Head the XIII | 12/17/2006, 1:04 pm EST

Not to jump on the bandwagon, but Chelsea Williams’ “Undecided” pretty much takes the whole freakin’ cake. No lie.

So yeah. She has my vote!

zz | 12/17/2006, 12:50 pm EST

Sal DiTroia | 12/17/2006, 11:57 am EST

I think that “Undecided” written and sung by Chelsea Williams is the best new record to come out for a very long time.

joe monday | 12/17/2006, 11:46 am EST

Vicks | 12/17/2006, 7:44 am EST

Jerzy Jung’s “Never Say I’m Afraid” is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!! The last song on her myspace (read the lyrics and why she wrote it, too)is making lots of people cry. It could become addictive!!!!!!!!!!

Chelsea Williams… UNDECIDED
awesome, talented lady!!!!!!!!

I'm Anthony? | 12/16/2006, 10:05 pm EST

locksleys because even though this is one of there worse songs its still better than the rest of the ones on the top 5

Kelly the Giant | 12/16/2006, 9:55 pm EST

Locksley HAS GOT to win. There’s no competition as far as I can see. The Chelsea Williams song is boring, and she sounds just like every other songstress out there; Japanese Happening couldn’t keep my attention, and neither could London Bridges; and that Abbi song made me want to shoot my computer. Holy cow is that annoying. And then there’s Locksley, an incredible throwback band with memorable lyrics, catchy hooks, and energizing beats. I stumbled upon them on myspace a couple of months ago and they immediately became my favorite band. And they should be yours, too.

Mango | 12/16/2006, 7:44 pm EST

Cheslea Williams without a doubt

Chela Logga | 12/16/2006, 7:30 pm EST

Chelsea Williams is, by far, kicking everyone’s booty in this thing. She totally rocks!! Her songs even get stuck in my head! Now that’s what I call a hip, popular, talented artist. I vote “Undecided” all the way :)

Marshall12433 | 12/16/2006, 7:16 pm EST

Locksley’s song was in that Starz video, wasn’t it?? Man, that was a great video! I know I’ve heard their sound around … shoes? You guys will go far - can’t get tired of this CD of yours! OH - I know where I’ve heard you before - on the MTV show. WOW!! You’ve got the go … GO GO GO

Dani's Mom | 12/16/2006, 7:10 pm EST

As a major Beatlemaniac in my day, I should hate Locksley - but I can’t help lovign them to death! While it’s clear they get their influence from the Fab, they are wonderful in their own write … hooked me actually the second time I listened to their music, not the first. Midwest boys make good … do want to hear more of them! they are what Rock needs these days - enough of their own edge to be their own band and just enough familiarity to hook you in. Rock on guys!!

Moose | 12/16/2006, 6:39 pm EST

I have to agree that Chelsea’s is the best. Being so young with melodies and lyrics like this, you can tell she will go far!!

RealZeal | 12/16/2006, 5:45 pm EST

Undedided by Chelsea
I don’t get the comparison to James Blunt. I think the song could be a radio hit, but it doesn’t sound like anything else. That’s what’s so cool about it.

Pagan | 12/16/2006, 5:29 pm EST

Japanese Happening - Black Affair.
Breath of fresh air.

Joey B | 12/16/2006, 4:49 pm EST

Chelsea Williams – “Undecided”

Black Affair. Nothing can go wrong with Steve Mason behind the mic.

Mason for king.

FreakinA | 12/16/2006, 4:39 pm EST

The Beauty.. Great song, innovative, unpredictable. Refreshing to hear something that pushes the boundaries and still has the hooks you can’t get out of your head.

Sean McCluskey | 12/16/2006, 4:34 pm EST

Black affair; Japanese Happening is bouncing off the walls while I paint the skirting in this room!

mandy | 12/16/2006, 3:29 pm EST

Chelsea Williams - Undecided

Everyone I play it for loves it. My emo neighbor, my metalhead brother, my little neice, my uncle, everyone!

travlake | 12/16/2006, 3:09 pm EST

Locksley. Their song and myspace page are leagues beyond the others, I can’t believe they’re unsigned!

BrainChild | 12/16/2006, 2:54 pm EST

“undecided” by Chelsea Williams is the best song up there

She has lasting appeal

Crash | 12/16/2006, 2:48 pm EST

“Don’t Make Me Wait” by Locksley is the clear winner, especially considering this is a myspace contest. Not only did I listen to every song (Locksely by far the best) but I also went to everyone’s myspace page and Locksley’s was the most entertaining, had the best songs, and really made me believe in them as a band. Their music is original, extremely well produced, especially since they are an unsigned band, and fun. Also these guys are completely unpretentious which is a miracle considering how long they have been in the NY music scene. Go Locksley!

Royce Feldman | 12/16/2006, 2:48 pm EST

Continental Divide all the way!

D | 12/16/2006, 1:49 pm EST

In the battle of the bands with the most myspace friends, I actually went through and listened to all these tracks.

The Black Affair track is dull and the singer wishes he was Ian Curtis.

The Locksley track is really fun. But this was better 40 years ago when the Beatles did it. (Am I the only person who can’t wait for this whole throwback/ripoff phase of hipster music to end?)

Ivy League - Very solid. A little sappy for my taste. But I do need to thank these guys for planting a new word in my head.
“Gleemo” - genre of music that sounds happy at first, but if you listen to the words, you might kinda want to cut yourself.

The Beauty - Please. Stop. Now.

Chelsea Williams - As the only artist on this list who doesn’t seem to be trying to be hip to the point of personal injury, I’ll give Chelsea a vote.

BritneeJoy | 12/16/2006, 1:34 pm EST

I like the Chelsea Williams song

vikki | 12/16/2006, 1:13 pm EST

I have had the pleasure of having Locksley perform at Dewey Beach Music Conference and Dewey Beach Popfest several times, and they are great musicians, great songwriters.. and had the crowd going crazy at their performances.

Great hooks, great image.. it’s Locksley all the way

Stefano Ashbridge | 12/16/2006, 1:09 pm EST

“Undecided” by Chelsea Williams is a great song.

Caitlin | 12/16/2006, 1:03 pm EST

Locksley for sure! They’re even better live too.

El Schungo | 12/16/2006, 12:49 pm EST

Lockseley is absolutely one of the hottest new bands I have heard this year. Their catchy 60ies Rock n Roll style music just shakes your ass. Try to see them live on stage, they make the crowd go wild in no time. “Don’t make me wait” is one of Locksley best - great tunes, grat gitarres - hear it!

Locksley - they really rock!

Pebbles | 12/16/2006, 12:34 pm EST

Don’t Make Me Wait (locksley) - definitely. Only one that stuck with me and I listened to again.

Vels | 12/16/2006, 12:33 pm EST

Black Affair - Japanese happenings - Long live the Mason!

alan vella | 12/16/2006, 12:31 pm EST

I VOTE FOR IVY LEAGUE!!!

Teresa | 12/16/2006, 12:18 pm EST

Ivy League.

Janelle | 12/16/2006, 12:17 pm EST

Chelsea has it all. talent, songwriting, guitar playing, looks, and the voice of an angel

Her songs and her voice are so soothing

twizzler | 12/16/2006, 11:21 am EST

although locksley’s songs are catchy, you don’t feel like you’ve heard them before somewhere else.

they have poetic lyrics and harmonies that give you chills.

at the same time, they’re also bouncy and fun and pick you up out of any bad mood.

my vote’s for locksley!

Tripoli | 12/16/2006, 3:06 am EST

the lyrics to all her songs are so amazing and sort of saying things in a way that is not like every other song you’ve heard. that’s the thing about chelsea and undecided and it’s just nice to listen too

grand wizzard theodore | 12/16/2006, 2:44 am EST

LOCKSLEY

locksley is one of those bands where i know they should be/are going to be famous, but i kind of want to keep them to myself??

but they defintiely deserve to win this contest.

Chelsea’s “Undecided” is decidedly melodic, mellowing and just plain good listening.

I stunbled upon Chelsea in Glendale about 2 yrs. ago, “Undecided” shows how much she has grown as an artist. What depth and soul in that voice!!! You rock Chelsea!

rock and roll | 12/15/2006, 8:18 pm EST

I actually sat down and listened to every song listed on here and decided that Locksley is definitely still the one! I enjoyed Ivy League’s song, however, I give it up to Locksley’s unparalleled sound and magnificent, or say, breathtaking performances live! There’s something about them that screams rock (and roll), yeah.

ells @ ramclam.com | 12/15/2006, 8:18 pm EST

Ga’damn people are mean on this thing. The great part about a contest like this is that you’re voting solely on what you “HEAR” vs any other factors. Yeah yeah, all in all people like songs that sound good, are edgy and different. So yeah, that’s the obvious.. what is sad about these contests is the hidden windows on of what new/independent artist go through to get their music heard. I don’t know Chelsea Williams personally, so that saves me from the flames by posters claiming only family members and friends commenting here. I bumped into Chelsea’s Music 2 years ago while at a meeting in Santa Monica. I attended one of her many shows and even see her once in awhile performing in Universal City. Now, what makes an artist truly original and like-able isn’t only the music, but the passion, drive and fire behind it all. Stuck-up/”I JUST WANT TO BE FAMOUS” artists last only as long as their cockiness and egos do. As an artist and as a person, Chelsea really busts her ass off for doing what she loves to do. Now, I don’t get anything out of posting a praise for her neither do I get anything for saying negative things about her. If you don’t like her music, good for you and good for anyone else who cares, if you like it, Great, but just like the other, who cares as well. To each their own. The point I am trying to get at here is the people posting non-sense about being over-rated, etc. need to lay-off what they THINK THEY KNOW, which probably isn’t much. Chelsea Williams deserves a lot of appreciate and it’s nice to see that people enjoy her calm, warm-hearted music. I’ll even add that I enjoy her live performances more then her recorded sessions (don’t get me wrong. recorded sessions are nice). It’s so hard to capture what goes on right in front of you Chelsea has a presence that nothing can duplicate. Alrighty. I’ve spoken enough. Don’t do what I just did and go after what people are saying on here. Check out the music for yourself and comment. Long live passionate music-making.

It’s hard to find truly uplifting music now, something that makes you feel good no matter what, not even because it’s happy lyrics or melody, it’s because you’ve found something that lets you know, there is still hope for rock and roll. But I found that with Locksley.
Don’t Make Me Wait.

Kina | 12/15/2006, 3:55 pm EST

Chelsea Williams all the way!

Christopher | 12/15/2006, 3:49 pm EST

Chelsea Williams is a beautiful musician. Not only does she have the appearance of an angel, but she has the voice of seraphim. Her musical talent isn’t limited to simply performing, but includes her ability to write and compose works of music that are enchanting. And her song Undecided is no exception. It speaks to a universal message that anyone who has been in a relationship knows. That other person who takes no firm stance on anything to keep from offending or hurting the person they are with. So flimsy “that gust will blow you down” they hide who they are leaving them to ground to stand on as a person, and therefore making them a very fragile individual. A great song can not just sound pretty, but must speak to the listener and touch them in some way. Chelsea Williams does that with each of her compositions. Personally I would like to thank her for enriching the world of music with her contributions. I must add that some may think that she is simply a product of the John Mayer\James Blunt era of music that has come about recently, and that is simply not true. She was writing music like this long before that became the “popular” style. Beyond that her “singer songwriter” style of music is something that, while other styles come and go, always stays strong in the ears of listeners.

JengaJoe | 12/15/2006, 3:06 pm EST

While Ivy League is pretty decent, Locksley is far and away the best band . Their songs are unbelievably tight, the production of the video is amazing , but it doesn’t even do them justice. To really experience how good Locksley is, and the real measure of a band in general, is when you see them live. The energy of their shows is off the charts.

Laura | 12/15/2006, 2:57 pm EST

Chelsea Williams’ “undecided” is a great song. She’s very talented.

a-non-i-moose | 12/15/2006, 2:56 pm EST

locksley is one of the funnest, greatest bands one could ever see and/or hear. their songs are catchy and you can’t help but to listen to them incessantly. they always put their all into everything they do, even if it is just a show for a handful of people. all of their songs are superlative, and i think ‘don’t make me wait’ exemplifies this. i mean, how can you NOT like a song that has hand claps in it?! this band is going places, that’s for sure. so get on the bandwagon now folks, so you can brag to all of your friends that you knew about them before they took over the world. yeah, rock.

Yeah Rock Locksley | 12/15/2006, 2:55 pm EST

Wow! I love “Don’t Make me Wait.” I teach 8th graders, I let them listen to this song this morning to get them pumped up for Christmas break. They loved it, its really a song for everyone. Love Locksley!

Nino | 12/15/2006, 2:54 pm EST

Locksley is the only logical choice here. How can a band sound “overproduced?” I’ve never understood that. When people say that to me it just means that the music sounds really good, but they don’t really care for it enough to admit that it is really good music. These are 4 really great guys from Brooklyn and seeing them play at a NYC bar is the best way to experience Locksley to the full capacity. The energy they exude infects you, but in a good way. The tight live performances and genuine charm about these boys from Brooklyn only add to the fact that they play really great music.

A Locksley Fan | 12/15/2006, 2:10 pm EST

There is almost nothing that makes me happier than listening to LOCKSLEY. “Don’t Make Me Wait” is a great song that I promise never ever gets old. The only thing that might be better than listening to Locksley is seeing them live. They are rock and roll.

Matty | 12/15/2006, 1:58 pm EST

Locksley should be best band…usually on myspace i get ‘friends requests’ from some rite shitty band i wouldn’t give the time of day for! got one from locksley my 1st thought ws ‘ere we go’ anyway checked their stuff n ws amazed n shocked that for the 1st time a good unsigned band wit catchy tunes that could hold their own, ‘myspacing’ me. im definatly a fan of their stuff n will be looking out for an album in the future! well done fella’s n goodluck

GB | 12/15/2006, 1:54 pm EST

Locksley simply deserve it. They are bringing back songs&songwriting - and great ones at that. They also can actually sing and play well live, a rarity these days, and are good lads to boot. They hustle and put a lot of time into their craft. Just my two cents.

i have seen Locksley probably a hundred times- they get better and better. Don’t make me wait is hooky and infectious and if you don’t find yourself humming it or whistling it as you go about the mundane grind of daily life there is something wrong with you. remember when you could remember the tune and the lyrics—- that is Locksley today. YEAH ROCK

I love Locksley! Don’t Make Me Wait is best!

GOB | 12/15/2006, 12:45 pm EST

“Don’t Make Me Wait” by Locksley is the best song on this list. It is original, immaculately produced (perhaps even conceived) and the only song I really wanted to listen to a second time, and a third, and a fourth…

The Grubby 1 | 12/15/2006, 12:45 pm EST

Chelsea is soooo over-rated. She’s so safe, whoever said “marketable” was bang on. Soo many of these songs are like instant classics. I hate to bring artists down but if they deserve it it must be done. I’m sorry Chelsea, ignore my comment read the other 100000 that say you’re good. All other read this: Many of the songs are instant classics (close encounters, salle green, the ceiling on the wall, the voom blooms song also), “undecided” is probly this contests “your beautiful”. Sorry to be so harsh. I feel kinda bad but the other bands deserve the praise much more. All of the other songs on this list actually. Ivy League is probly my pick for today, Lockley sounds fantastic though (their lyrics arnt as tight as IL) and black affair and the beauty are also doing good stuff. The Beauty kinda scares me though.

sher/www.homegrownradionj.com | 12/15/2006, 12:43 pm EST

Locksley are the best band around in a long time! They deserve to win, they are professional, cool, cute, have great voices and are truly very nice guys, good to their mothers too! And let us not forget….their music is fantastic.

Just wanted to say hi to all Chelsea Williams’ friends and family who have been very busy posting here this morning. For anyone who isn’t in her street team, I’ll save you the three minutes I just wasted: dreary, inoffensive sub-Tori Amos crooning. Bland and unmemorable. Must try harder!

Shannon Hurley | 12/15/2006, 9:33 am EST

Chelsea Williams! She knocked me out when she first played our showcase “Don’t Call Us Tori”. And she has a wicked following too..

I really like Undecided a lot. Chelsea Williams has an incredible voice, and really unique musical sensibilities. There’s a lot of depth to her music. She kinda blends the idea of the acoustic singer/songwriter with more interesting harmonies, and I really enjoy that.

Chelsea Williams displays far more talent than many acts who are already signed…

Richard | 12/15/2006, 2:06 am EST

Chelsea Williams is one of the world’s truely great unsigned talents. Her music is so beautiful and soothing. The song “Undecided” really shows her ability as a song writer. Makes people like myself who live in the UK envious of all the lucky people of LA who get to see her perform her songs live. She is a wonderful friendly person as I have e-mailed her and always had a wonderful response. Deserves to go far in the music industry.

Chelsea William is undisputedly the best singer. She Writes her own music, plays the guitar and sings… She is the whole package!

Chelsea Williams. She is incredibly talented, beautiful, hardworking, and vibrant. the world needs more exposure to great musicians/persons like her.

Chelsea Williams really the only decision to make here. Her song, by far, is above all others. We look for more things to come from her. “keep it up girl”

Undecided is definetly the best song on this list, its well written with meaning behind the words. She can sing, play, and write, thats just amazing in todays music world. She should definetly be number 1.
