Rolling Stone’s Best Bands On MySpace: Round Three

12/13/06, 5:56 pm EST

Rolling StoneYou guys are getting really passionate about who we should include in our Best Bands On MySpace competition, which is awesome. But remember, if you use the comments to nominate bands you think we can consider, we still can’t consider them. You’ve got to go to our MySpace page to nominate your favorites. DO NOT post suggestions here — use the comments below to weigh in on the bands we’ve selected for today. That way we get to hear if we’re onto something, or totally insane for liking what we’re hearing with these groups. You can read the full rules after the jump, but in the meantime let’s get to today’s picks.

  • Kolja – “Let There Be No Fears”: www.myspace.com/koljamusic
  • Tunesmith – “No Tourist”: www.myspace.com/tunesmithmyspace
  • The Dark Romantics – “Where Do We Go From Here”: www.myspace.com/thedarkromantics
  • Riviera – “Here’s To Us”: www.myspace.com/rivierasound
  • Ryan Marks Productions – “High Tide”: www.myspace.com/elephantrockisthebest

Remember, you only get ONE song to grab our attention. So choose the song that best exemplifies your sound. Here are the rules and regulations. READ THEM ALL BEFORE SUBMITTING:1) To enter, go to myspace.com/rollingstonemagazine. Click on the top blog entry, “Rolling Stone’s Best Bands on MySpace, 2006.”

2) In the “Add Comment” box, type in your/the band’s name, the title of the ONE SONG you’re submitting, and your MySpace Web address. This is the ONLY place to submit your song. Any submissions via messages, comments on the main MySpace page, or RollingStone.com will not be considered.

3) You must submit by December 18th. After that, the blog post will be locked up, thus ending your ability to enter. So get your shit in gear.

4) When we say “Best Bands on MySpace,” we totally mean solo artists should enter too. Best MySpace Solo Artist has too many syllables, and it isn’t as catchy to say. But we love you guys, and you should submit your work.

5) You may only enter the contest once. Any artist that enters more than once will be disqualified.

6) Don’t submit a cover of someone else’s song. Only original songs will be considered. But if we like your submission and there’s a cover on your page, it’s no harm, no foul.

7) No HTML codes! It will be deleted, along with your submission.

8) Any blog comments not pertaining to the contest will be deleted.

9) Make sure the song you submit is loaded onto your MySpace music player and that it works. If it doesn’t work, you’re shit out of luck, ’cause we’re not going to check back later.

10) All submitted songs must have been loaded onto your MySpace music player no earlier than January 1st, 2006.

11) Only enter the contest by hitting “Add Comment” below. Any submission posted by hitting “Reply” to any other band’s submission will be ignored, then deleted. Don’t cut the line. We’ll listen to every submission.

12) No soliciting for your song or asking about the status of your song via messages, comments, e-mails, etc. If your song is among those chosen, we’ll let you know.

13) Other than those rules above, there are no rules!

Right on Dude | 12/13/2006, 9:58 pm EST

“Dude” hit the nail on the head when he wrote that Tunesmith’s song “no tourists” should be called “We Wish We Wrote Song 2 By Blur.” How did this seep into the Top 5?!? Britney Spears has more credibility than that.

HaveMyBabiesRyan! | 12/13/2006, 9:59 pm EST

James Sinclair | 12/14/2006, 12:11 am EST

Ryan Marks is the musical genius to end all musical geni. (or genius’).

‘High Tide’ is extremly well composed, and it kicks downright ass. If Ryan is not selected then there is something very, very wrong with Rolling Stone.

To sum up my post:

RYAN MARKS > Brian Wilson

ben | 12/14/2006, 12:14 am EST

ryan marks has a love and dedication to music like no one else. I believe that a song of his that exemplifies this is “High Tide”. It is truly a piece of art and should be admired

gina | 12/14/2006, 12:33 am EST

Ryan Marks’ “High Tide” is a masterwork. Many of these other bands nominated are entertaining, yes, but High Tide ushers in an entirely new, genre-defining sound. And his Myspace says he’s 16 years old! Whaaaattt?!?!? This kid must be the most talented 16 year old on the face of earth!

CHOOSE RYAN MARKS FOR THE TOP 25

Maks music makes me feel good, the lyrics are superd, and the production is unparalled for someone of his age and resources.

Ryan Marks needs to win

Karen | 12/14/2006, 1:27 pm EST

Ryan Marks’s song truly blew me away, I’ve listened to it 20 times in the last hour and it is yet to get old.

claude | 12/14/2006, 1:32 pm EST

High Tide is the beeeessssttttt!!!! how can you people like the dark romantics more? I’ve heard 50 other bands just like the dark romantics on the radio but NO ONE LIKE RYAN MARKS. RYAN MARKS IS A GODSEND!

johannes | 12/14/2006, 1:32 pm EST

after reading all the posts i went checked ryan out. i see some definite potential in his music and lyrics. go Ryan!

dark romantics reminds me of generic punk-bitch metal. fuck that

President of RS | 12/14/2006, 1:34 pm EST

The Dark Romantics will slay. Not the Beach Boys. Grow some pubes

DPL | 12/14/2006, 1:35 pm EST

i love the dark romantics!!!

werner | 12/14/2006, 1:36 pm EST

high tide by ryan marks is the obvious choice here. this vocal arrangement is sooooo good, the dark romantics couldn’t figure out complex harmony and production like that if their lives depended on it. and he’s 16! long live the music of RYAN MARKS!

rebecca riot | 12/14/2006, 1:39 pm EST

the dark romantics, for sure. amazing band, amazing people, amazing talent.. it’s a triple threat, what more can you ask for? i’m so glad they’re from my hometown.. i get to see them all the tiiiiiime!

Vincent | 12/14/2006, 1:40 pm EST

Ryan Marks high is wondeful, it must be selected

DPL | 12/14/2006, 1:40 pm EST

actually. i take that back. Ryan Marks!!
you got potential. needs a little work here and there. but your liyrics are so new, so fresh…so revitalizing!!
dark romantics=….8===>

Trevor | 12/14/2006, 1:42 pm EST

That was a little petty, “grow some pubes,” just because your jealous of the kids talent doesn’t mean you have to resolve to katy tactics, in conclusion Marks must be victorious

Fred | 12/14/2006, 1:42 pm EST

RYAN MARKS!!! RYAN MARKS!!! RYAN MARKS!!!

cole | 12/14/2006, 1:43 pm EST

high tide by ryan marks productions is absolutely THE GREATEST. he must be the second coming of brian wilson

Die hard republican | 12/14/2006, 1:45 pm EST

All of these songs suck, they remind me of increased taxes and minorities gaining pull in american diplomacy and stupid liberals taking religion out of the government. but if i had to choose one of these lackluster songs it would definately have to be the stupid liberal Ryan Marks.

VIVA BUSH

Dominic | 12/14/2006, 1:47 pm EST

Even the Republican agrees Ryan Marks reigns victorious

Elf | 12/14/2006, 1:47 pm EST

RYAN RYAN RYAN RYAN RYAN RYAN !!

I LOVE HIGH TIDE BY RYAN MARKS IT IS SO INVENTIVE and fascinating

Andrea | 12/14/2006, 1:48 pm EST

At first i didnt like High tide, it seemed repetitive, however i couldnt shake it from my mind, i had to listen to it again, and again, and again. After further exploration i have decided it is by the best song on the list.

george | 12/14/2006, 1:50 pm EST

Malcolm | 12/14/2006, 1:54 pm EST

I like high tide best it is really good

James | 12/14/2006, 1:55 pm EST

I saw the Dark Romantics open for Murder By Death and Copeland. They put both bands to shame. TDR all the way!

beth | 12/14/2006, 1:56 pm EST

i think the dark romantics are way better than these other bands.

Stewie | 12/14/2006, 1:57 pm EST

I like Ryan he is good, High Tide is very nice

Joe | 12/14/2006, 1:58 pm EST

Beth I think your a concubonic whore with the Iq of a cucumber. Only someone with intellegence less than or equal to Forrest Gump could like the Dark Romantics. In conclusion Ryan Marks.

Michael | 12/14/2006, 2:01 pm EST

Has anyone else noticed The Dark Romantics sound exactly like all the crappy hardrock that comes out now (Jet, Von Bondies)to pick them would be a crime.

Ashley | 12/14/2006, 2:07 pm EST

The Dark Romantics – “Where Do We Go From Here”! No denying it….don’t even try!

The Dark Romantics – “Where Do We Go From Here”

Cher | 12/14/2006, 3:49 pm EST

The Dark Romantics are amazing!!!

L.Q.S. | 12/14/2006, 3:58 pm EST

Dark Romantics? Meh. They have quite an e-mail list, apparently. That doesn’t make them good.

Riviera? Clearly the cream of this crop.

Dr Phil | 12/14/2006, 4:00 pm EST

Ryan Marks, are we feeling threatened buddy?

tim | 12/14/2006, 4:05 pm EST

The dark romantics

Jenn | 12/14/2006, 4:20 pm EST

The Dark Romantics, hands down. They actually have a sound that belongs only to them that cannot be duplicated. Anyone can play a guitar with some distortion and maybe even sing while crying, but The Dark Romantics don’t need the gimics to get people dancing.

markos | 12/14/2006, 4:27 pm EST

i like the groovy sounds of the dark romantics!!! They are my pick

Erin | 12/14/2006, 4:27 pm EST

The Dark Romantics are not only great people, but an amazing band. Eric is an increadibly talented singer, too. This is a fantastic band, so my vote goes out to them.

markos | 12/14/2006, 4:36 pm EST

i’m changing my comment. i still like the dark romantics because they’re legitimately good, but in respect to fairness i went to listen to ryan marks to see what the hype was about. i critique bands for a living – constructively whenever possible – and i have to say that his song is… confusing. i’m sorry, but i can’t see this as an honest submission. it’s a bit of an insult to the other artists competing. “where do we go from here” is an actual song, with actual hooks, and actual musicianship. did i miss something?

Sasquatch | 12/14/2006, 4:48 pm EST

Melissa is right. We’ve seen The Dark Romantics a couple of times and they put on a rad show.

E-Z-E | 12/14/2006, 4:55 pm EST

I love the Dark Romantics. I have a man crush on Eric Collins.

Josh | 12/14/2006, 5:31 pm EST

Other than my own band (Shameless plug: The Vanity Plan), this is the band in Orlando that I want to see succeed the most. True story.

Josh | 12/14/2006, 5:33 pm EST

P.S. I was talking about The Dark Romantics.

Renee | 12/14/2006, 6:03 pm EST

The Dark Romantics all the way baby!!!

Patric Fallon | 12/14/2006, 6:12 pm EST

The Dark Romantics hands down! “Where Do We Go From Here” is one of my favorite songs right now! Although, “Fuck Your Jacket” by All Teeth and Knuckles is a close second.

michelle | 12/14/2006, 6:18 pm EST

pffft hide tide all the wayy! hide tide blows all those other songs clear outa the waterr… yay go ryan!

joe | 12/14/2006, 6:19 pm EST

high tide high tide high tide!

Ms.Cathartic | 12/14/2006, 6:35 pm EST

The Dark Romantics

With a Joy Division feel and a Cure type nostalgia They’ve aslo managed to get themselves in there too. Its like a picnic in a graveyard with your best friends, sad face cookies and black heart jello. Its perfect for a night out dancing when wide-eyed owls and trees with nothing but they’re bare claws will accompany you home. And they’ve accomplished a feat many bands fail to : the rhythm section shines. Its sort of darkly reminiscent of the spooky fairytales you heard as a child and innocent like a first love. They’ve truly lived up to their name.

Lawrence | 12/14/2006, 6:38 pm EST

high tide by ryan marks is amazing! this markos guy is a quack. no hooks? what are you talking about man? this song has more vocal hooks packed into it than most bands manage in their entire careers. and no real musicianship? sounds like he’s playing the piano to me, perhaps you need your hearing checked.

HIGH TIDE COME COME COME TO STAY

wooo go high tide. its sounds great, its innovated. it rules

The Grubby 1 | 12/15/2006, 1:02 am EST

WOOOOOOOAAAAAAH! I think the other bands are seriously understated in this. Really, like wow. Dark Romantics vs. Ryan Marks thing is intense but it’s obvious that like alot of these Ryan Marks guys as well as DR are friends of the bands and doing their best to help out. Rolling Stone hopefully will take that into account for all the bands in this thing. Very few of the bands picked are not-very-good. Most rock. Dark Romantics are really cool, so is Marks. However, Marks’ song is definitly being overrated. It is great but I think “A Day in the Life” even deserve as much praise as some people are giving his song here.

The Grubby 1 | 12/15/2006, 1:20 am EST

Riviera and Kolja are really good also. Like seriously. GO UNDERDOGS!

Andrea | 12/15/2006, 1:48 am EST

Klaus | 12/15/2006, 3:51 am EST

Hey Dude and Right on Dude,
sure the “Whoo whoo” intro from “No tourists” is nicked from somebody, but the band is called “The Rolling Stones”. How do I know? Well, I wrote the fucking song.
I heard this comment from a few people, mostly guys who could not discern AC/DC from Jet.
Mediocre composers borrow, great composers steal. (Georges Bizet)

Cheers,
Klaus

Maybe the reason that the Dark Roamntics have so many votes is beacuse they have about 7000 more friends/fans on myspace then any of the other bands, or maybe its becasue they have actually toured, or maybe its because they are the opnly band oif the five on an (indie) label…I actually think its just ebcause they are the best. STEP OFF PUNKS!

HIGH TIDE is unique, unusual and unquestionbly catchy….catchy in way that it keeps playing in my head, but not catchy that it will wear out fast….each of the many times i’ve listened to this song, i have appreciated something different about the arrangement AND the lyrics. when i think back on some of the more interestingly unique songs i have appreciated and liked over the years, HIGH TIDE has many of the same characteristics. hope it gets recorded in a format to eventually put it on my ipod. thanks for the new song!

Joshua Martin | 12/15/2006, 11:01 pm EST

CORT | 12/16/2006, 11:08 pm EST

High Tide by Ryan Marks is unnervingly good.

Ken | 12/17/2006, 12:03 am EST

High Tide is really amazing. I mean, how often do you hear songs these days open up with a six flute section? Its harmonics and key changes are fascinating. it very much recalls Phil Spector’s “wall of sound” technique, and more universally, the vocal harmonies of Brian Wilson and The Beach Boys. And if I’m correct, this song is in 1.0 monophonic sound, quite a bold way to mix a song in 2006. In all, the tune has a wonderful 1960s nostalgia going on. And in 2006, just when music is at its least exciting and the industry is in between a rock and a hard place, I think it’s time we step back to an era when music was appreciated for its quality, not its commercial viability. Ryan Marks can help us do this.

yorke | 12/17/2006, 2:34 am EST

I have to agree with the overwhelming consensus that Ryan Marks really has something special with “High Tide.”

dave | 12/17/2006, 3:04 am EST

Ryan Marks Productions High Tide…wow. How can one even begin to describe a song like this? A heavenly piece of work.

Laura6 | 12/17/2006, 3:40 am EST

I’ve listened to all 20 nominees from all 4 rounds now, and Ryan Marks HIGH TIDE is far and away the best of them all. Inventive, unique, and beautifully produced.

meesh | 12/17/2006, 11:22 am EST

The Dark Romantics are very unique in their own way. With so many new bands out there in pretty much the same catagories, they really stood out to me. They deserve to be heard.

Jerzy Lover a.k.a Travis | 12/17/2006, 1:48 pm EST

Jerzy Jung is by far the best solo artist around, not just on myspace. Her lyrics are original, meaningful, and profound w/o the pop-chart cheese — and they should be, because they materialize from her personal and collective experiences. Her words and expressive nature are tangible in a way that so few artists have a talent for. Jerzy pours her heart and passion into her lyrics and is equally as devoted to the music. Even if she doesn’t win this contest, she still represents (and will someday be recognized publicly) as one of the few, great solo artists of all time.

Betsy! | 12/17/2006, 3:27 pm EST

The Dark Romantics!

Josh J | 12/17/2006, 3:29 pm EST

The Dark Romantics all the way!

Kayla | 12/17/2006, 3:46 pm EST

The dark romantics rock my world!!!!!

Katie :) | 12/17/2006, 3:47 pm EST

I love the Dark Romantics!!!!

earl | 12/17/2006, 4:09 pm EST

That Dark Romantics song is terrible. High Tide obviously had a lot more work put into it.

Oboe | 12/17/2006, 4:20 pm EST

Yeah, Ryan Marks does pretty much ice The Dark Romantics in terms of talent.

Zen | 12/17/2006, 4:31 pm EST

I actually really like both of these front-runners (Ryan Marks and Dark Romantics) quite a bit. But Marks presents such a fresh, invigorating new sound, while TDR sound like a lot of other bands out there.

maria | 12/17/2006, 4:41 pm EST

Wow, I emphatically hate The Dark Romantics. I could barely get through 40 seconds of their song. It’s so manufactured and hackneyed.

Steve | 12/17/2006, 5:33 pm EST

C’mon, is this really a competition? The Dark Romantics BLOW…everyone else away. The Dark Romantics RULE!!!

elissa | 12/17/2006, 5:57 pm EST

The Dark Romantics… hands down

Spence | 12/17/2006, 6:16 pm EST

Ryan Marks Productions has more musical talent than any of these other lame bands combined!!!!!

Roger | 12/17/2006, 6:27 pm EST

This High Tide song is pretty much changing my whole perspective on music today. Awe-inpsiring to say the least.

Jocelyn | 12/17/2006, 7:39 pm EST

I find it odd that every comment that’s not for The Dark Romantics, puts down The Dark Romantics. I find it equally odd (and awesome) that The Dark Romantics fans aren’t putting down anyone else. Very telling.

Erik | 12/17/2006, 7:41 pm EST

Thats cause Dark Romantics fans play nice. And the Dark Romantics are amazing.

Donna | 12/17/2006, 7:49 pm EST

I’m crazy about Riviera. They are one of those rare bands whose album can play on repeat multiple times, and you still want to hear it again. Fresh and original.

Dark | 12/17/2006, 7:50 pm EST

Yeah, that’s funny, except when they told Ryan Marks to “grow some pubes” and that his “music blows.” Yes. Those Dark Romantics sure do play nice! very telling.

dumbass.

Isis | 12/17/2006, 8:07 pm EST

Way to go Dark! These Dark Romantics guys cant be serious saying that they “play nice.” I mean it’s fine that they don’t, but don’t act all holier than thou.

RYAN MARKS PRODUCTIONS

heather b | 12/17/2006, 9:36 pm EST

yeah so the dark romantics are orgasmic!! clean up aisle – ME!!!!

Huk | 12/17/2006, 10:37 pm EST

Ryan Marks needs about eight or nine years to mature as an artist and a songwriter before he can be considered to be in the same league as The Dark Romantics.

Lil | 12/17/2006, 10:43 pm EST

I disagree. Many of the greats started writing and composing at an incredibly young age. Musical talent and maturation can happen at all different speeds. I would say Marks is an incredibly mature artist from what I can tell, in his production and his arrangements. It is unfair to disregard him simply because he is young, especially since his material is already better than most of these other bands.

Q | 12/17/2006, 11:13 pm EST

Yeah I’m with Lil, Marks is a really talented fella. High Tide is incredibly impressive. He’s got my vote.

Huk | 12/17/2006, 11:21 pm EST

I did not ever mention age. He is talented for being young, however, he does not have the presence, charisma, or production values of a tour hardened, multiple studio album producing musician. His song comes less about emotion and feel and more about going through the motions to achieve a sound that has been done before.

I hardly think that emulating Beach Boys tunes can qualify as long term career in music other than that of a cover band.

Lil | 12/17/2006, 11:43 pm EST

This contest is about giving smaller artists a break, not recognizing a “tour hardened, multiple studio album” already-signed band. If they’re soooo great (which they aren’t), and they’ve already recorded multiple studio albums, then you’ve proved my point that RYAN MARKS should be the one to win, since he does not yet have such luxuries. Give Marks a studio to record an album in, and see how much better it comes out than the uninteresting, re-hashed Dark Romantics sound.

It’s also incredibly belittling and a crude generalization to say Ryan Marks is simply emulating Beach Boys tunes. They are obviously an influence on the vocal harmonies, but the song is NOTHING like a Beach Boys song.

simon | 12/18/2006, 2:26 am EST

Ryan Marks Productions!

Gil | 12/18/2006, 2:57 am EST

I vote Ryan Marks!

Definitely Ryan marks Productions

jimmy | 12/18/2006, 9:29 am EST

As far as I know the Dark romantics don’t have multiple studio albums…they have an ep. And come on two of the dark romantic’s comments were rude toward Ryan Marks as compared to nearly all of Ryan Marks comments being rude toward the Dark Romatnics.

Snere | 12/18/2006, 11:08 am EST

The Dark Roamntics are beeter than the others…and better looking too.

Shelly Shelton | 12/18/2006, 11:08 am EST

The Dark Romantics make me :)

amanda | 12/18/2006, 11:18 am EST

i agree with jimmy. that is what jocelyn was trying to say… a majority of the ryan marks fans belittle the dark romantics in their comments. a majority of tdr fans do not belittle ryan marks. and yes, the dark romantics only have an ep out right now. but not for long…. FEB 13!!!!

Britni | 12/18/2006, 11:22 am EST

The Dark Romantics are amazing hands down the best!!!!!

paulie | 12/19/2006, 12:00 pm EST

kolja let there be no fears
yes!

Hukstable | 12/19/2006, 3:28 pm EST

“Multiple studio album producing musician” was refering to Eric Collins and/or Dean Paul of The Dark Romantics, who have appeared on dozens of records (Denison Marrs, The Party People, John Ralston).

But in order to undermind a good point it must first be taken out of context. Good job Ryan Marks fans, good job indeed!

Thresher | 12/19/2006, 4:00 pm EST

ryan marks no doubt

johnny | 12/19/2006, 6:48 pm EST

Yeah here to f\vote for Damone “What we came here for”
Pick them NOW!!! HAHAAA

NotMozart | 12/19/2006, 11:47 pm EST

wow, here’s to Rolling Stone picking the exact same crap that they effuse in their now-utterly-useless review section. Aside From David Fricke, you guys have totally lost any respectability that this once-great magazine had. I am very disappointed. I hope David Fricke starts his own music magazine. That is one I will subscribe to. Not Rolling Stone. Not anymore. Farewell.

Perdik Osmanog | 12/20/2006, 3:04 pm EST

This has been taken over by the corporate clones of mediwurld and is no longer relevant. The eight will triumph
