Rolling Stone’s Best Bands On MySpace: Round One

12/11/06, 5:49 pm EST

Rolling StoneAs we told you earlier today, we are hosting our first ever Best Bands On MySpace contest. We’ve received tons of nominations on our MySpace page (which is the ONLY place you can suggest contenders) and there are more coming in every minute. Below you’ll see our list of the first five contestants that caught our attention. Tell us what you think, and remember, we want to hear your opinions here on Rock Daily, but in order to nominate your brother’s friend’s buddy’s band who so totally rock, you’ve gotta follow the rules (which appear, in entirety, after the jump) and do so ONLY ONCE on MySpace. Sitting in front of your TV and suggesting the same band over and over will not get you on our cover. In fact, it will get you disqualified. Just FYI.

Today’s special nominees, in no particular order:

  • Night Driving in Small Towns – “Close Encounters”: www.myspace.com/nightdrivinginsmalltowns
  • Tempo No Tempo – “Static”: www.myspace.com/temponotempo
  • Shannon Hurley – “Sunrise”: www.myspace.com/shannonhurley
  • B.O.S.C.H. – “Mehr”: www.myspace.com/boschmusic
  • Astro Junkie – “Don’t Say Another Word”: www.myspace.com/astrojunkieatl

Remember, you only get ONE song to grab our attention. So choose the song that best exemplifies your sound. Here are the rules and regulations. READ THEM ALL BEFORE SUBMITTING:

1) To enter, go to myspace.com/rollingstonemagazine. Click on the top blog entry, “Rolling Stone’s Best Bands on MySpace, 2006.”

2) In the “Add Comment” box, type in your/the band’s name, the title of the ONE SONG you’re submitting, and your MySpace Web address. This is the ONLY place to submit your song. Any submissions via messages, comments on the main MySpace page, or RollingStone.com will not be considered.

3) You must submit by December 18th. After that, the blog post will be locked up, thus ending your ability to enter. So get your shit in gear.

4) When we say “Best Bands on MySpace,” we totally mean solo artists should enter too. Best MySpace Solo Artist has too many syllables, and it isn’t as catchy to say. But we love you guys, and you should submit your work.

5) You may only enter the contest once. Any artist that enters more than once will be disqualified.

6) Don’t submit a cover of someone else’s song. Only original songs will be considered. But if we like your submission and there’s a cover on your page, it’s no harm, no foul.

7) No HTML codes! It will be deleted, along with your submission.

8) Any blog comments not pertaining to the contest will be deleted.

9) Make sure the song you submit is loaded onto your MySpace music player and that it works. If it doesn’t work, you’re shit out of luck, ’cause we’re not going to check back later.

10) All submitted songs must have been loaded onto your MySpace music player no earlier than January 1st, 2006.

11) Only enter the contest by hitting “Add Comment” below. Any submission posted by hitting “Reply” to any other band’s submission will be ignored, then deleted. Don’t cut the line. We’ll listen to every submission.

12) No soliciting for your song or asking about the status of your song via messages, comments, e-mails, etc. If your song is among those chosen, we’ll let you know.

13) Other than those rules above, there are no rules!

TheH1tman | 12/12/2006, 1:56 pm EST

Tempo No Tempo is by far one of the coolest bands on myspace. Not only is their music clever and incredibly easy to get into, but all of the guys in the band are awesome. Warm and friendly. Walnut House!

dave | 12/12/2006, 2:08 pm EST

bosch needs a contract! they are the new rammstein.

MLW | 12/12/2006, 3:07 pm EST

Re: Night Driving in Small Towns: Andrea can sing the hell out of any song and better than that, she can write; plus, the band is tight. NDST is a winner.

Mike | 12/12/2006, 3:14 pm EST

I like Astro Junkie. It’s pop but is still agressive. The breakdown is awesome. Cheap Trick with an angry modern touch

December 18? | 12/12/2006, 3:28 pm EST

Shannon Hurley & “Sunrise” is intoxicating!!

The Grubby 1 | 12/12/2006, 4:52 pm EST

Night Driving in Small Towns is awesome. Their songs an instant classic really…or maybe I was just in the right mood for it. Astro Junkies also pretty awesome. Tempo no tempo is alright and the other two just suck. Shannon Hurley just plain sucks, out of the thousands of awesome stuff you probly heard you chose her? Comon stone, i thought you were cooler than that.

TurtletaubQ | 12/12/2006, 4:55 pm EST

Night Driving in Small Towns is a totally awesome band! Like totally awesome.

mike | 12/12/2006, 6:16 pm EST

b.o.s.c.h.’s music truely isn’t like anything I’ve ever heard before. I can totally hear the influence of early KMFDM and RAMMSTEIN, but those influences don’t over compensate the music’s incredible purpose. It’s a fukken uber sound! What does b.o.s.c.h. stand for?
I wish I knew more about this unknown band that found me on MYSPACE, but everything I can find on them is written in German. But that doesn’t matter. The pounding drums, hammering the beat into your brain, the crunching guitars that scatter the shattered pieces created by the brilliant strokes of the keyboard. The sonic landscape the music paints is only enhanced by the gritty vocals.

Good choices. I like Astro Junkie cause it’s catchy and doesn’t sound like other pop songs on the radio. They would be a good choice. Bosch isn’t bad either.

Melissa Chester | 12/12/2006, 11:35 pm EST

I think the best choice of them all is definitely Shannon Hurley’s “Sunrise”….it rocks. Every one of us musicians loves and respects the opinions of Rolling Stone Magazine; it’s a staple in our community!!! Thanks for picking up on Shannon’s work…that rocks!

I’ve performed as one of the singer/songwriters of Shannon’s organization, Don’t Call Us Tori and she rules!

I think Night Driving has a very warm, classic sound that doesnt get old. That is very unique nowadays, since we are too often surrounded by one hit wonders and fad bands that will undoubtedly soon fade out of existance… For example, many of the pop/punk bands we hear on the radio now. Nevertheless, I would like to hear more of “NDST” in the future and believe they would contribute greaty to the music industry.

Best song : “How Does It Feel” An Pierle & White Velvet

Nick Fawcett | 12/14/2006, 10:13 am EST

I have found lots of great music on Myspace but none grabbed my attention like Shannon Hurley. She has many infulences and they are all represented in her own unique sound. In every song I have heard so far, her melodies are so easy to listen to. The only other artists I can say that about is Paul McCartney. I went to i-Tunes and bought her music and then on to my ipod for easly listening. It has been great discovering her music on Myspace.

Danny D | 12/14/2006, 10:41 am EST

Astro Junkie is the only one that is truly original rock music. If you want folk music in rolling stone, be my guest. But if you want rock, what rolling stone was built on, Astro Junkie should get the vote.

Bosch – See Ramstien
NDST- See Americana
Shannon – See Autotune
The other ones I wont even comment on

Stuart | 12/14/2006, 11:17 am EST

Just wanted to comment on Astro Junkie – “Don’t Say Another Word…”

Whether you like rock, pop or anything in between, this is the song for you. It’s catchy, well crafted and just down right good!

Check it out!

Cole | 12/15/2006, 5:48 pm EST

Shannon Hurley get’s my vote. “Sunrise” has a “stick in your head” quality. Her songs in general show solid songwriting and cross-genre appeal. She’s got a shot at a long-term career.

The other bands are a bit a fun but are much more of a niche.

B.O.S.C.H. — gets my runner up vote. Well done there… for your darker qualities.

Cheers!

Ben | 12/15/2006, 6:12 pm EST

oh please!! Shannon Hurley all the way! Sunrise is the most beautiful thing ive heard in a long time. Beatle-esque melodies, heartwarming lyrics and Shannon’s unmistakeable charming voice. she rules!

I vote SHANNON HURLEY! She is an amazingly gifted woman. Her voice is unbelievable, her soul is pure, her lyrics straight from the heart. She is truly a star and a great talent. Above all, she is genuine and kind. She reaches out to help others. She is beautiful. She rocks. Go Shannon!

Robert T | 12/15/2006, 7:23 pm EST

Astro Junkie is good. My fav on the list. Good vocals, aggressive, and interesting guitars and keyboards, but still catchy. Different lyrics too. Not your standard pop song.

Bosch is good too.

Don’t care too much for the others.

Kamie | 12/15/2006, 8:40 pm EST

Dustin Lim | 12/16/2006, 12:07 pm EST

I don’t know everyone from the band Night Driving but the guitar and bassist are two of the most talented musicians i’ve ever met personally and the lead singer is a very soulful and beautiful lyricist and vocalist. Their sound has to be one of if not the best in the competition.
