12/8/06, 6:16 pm EST

Pavement R.E.M.These should reveal both the writer’s adoration of his/her subject and also be awesome on their own terms. These five do both. Which others would you add to this list?

  • “Song For Bob Dylan” – David Bowie
  • “Unseen Power of the Picket Fence” – Pavement
  • “We’re The Replacements” – They Might Be Giants

Dan | 12/9/2006, 12:01 pm EST

Ok, he’s not exactly a rock legend, but Don MacLean’s American Pie is a eulogy to Buddy Holly, Ritche Valens, and the Big Bopper. That should make the list.

A.J. | 12/9/2006, 9:15 pm EST

“Killing Me Softly”-written and originally performed by Lori Lieberman

by the way, early version of Tenacious D’s “Tribute” was a tribute to “Stairway to Heaven,” instead of not remembering the Greatest song in the world, the D went into a “Stairway” rendition, they were forced to change it on the album for legal reasons.

JJ Ramone | 12/10/2006, 1:01 am EST

“Jolene” is an actual Dolly Parton song. It wasn’t written by Jack White.

How about Liz Phair’s Exile in Guyville album? It was originally planned as a song by song response to The Rolling Stones’ Exile on Mainstreet.

Meyer | 12/10/2006, 2:01 am EST

“Real Live Bleedin’ Fingers,” by Lucinda Williams about Paul Westerburg. “Like a Rolling Pin,” by the Replacements celebrating Bob.

Steve | 12/10/2006, 2:39 am EST

I doubt anyone here will know what this is, but among several songs written in tribute to the late Kevin Gilbert, Spock’s Beard’s “The Great Nothing” is one of the most amazing and beautiful tributes to another musician that I’ve ever heard.

You can read the lyrics here:
http://www.spocksbeard.com/discography/v.html#Anchor–A-51233

(as a side note, Gilbert, an ex of Sheryl Crow who did most of the work but recieved little of the credit for her successful debut album, wrote a song on his “Thud” album about her, called “Leaving Miss Broadway” that’s also an amazing song)

BobbyC | 12/10/2006, 3:06 am EST

R.A.M.O.N.E.S by Motorhead most def!

“cast no shadow” was dedicated to Richard Ashcroft in the liner notes, but i believe “Live Forever” might be for John Lennon. Appears to me anyways, if you see their live show.

Immortal by Pearl Jam- It’s a beautiful song dedicated to Kurt Cobain.

Courtney | 12/10/2006, 10:54 am EST

To the person who wrote why is REM in the picture, um, can you read? One of the songs in the starter list WAS WRITTEN FOR THEM. Also, whoever said “Hey Man Nice Shot” was about Kurt Cobain is a MORON. It is well documented by the band Filter in countless interviews that the song is about a Pennsylvania congressman who shot himself on live TV. I can’t believe no one else here knew about that.

Lou Reed’s Song for Drella is about Andy Warhol.

‘Neil Young is a talentless loser’ by Mungo Jerry

Andrew | 12/10/2006, 12:36 pm EST

“Let Me In” was written for Cobain as by Stipe as they were planning to collaborate shortly before Love killed him, I mean he committed suicide, and “Given to Fly” by Pearl Jam is not about Stapp, I hope this was just a joke to piss people off, and for the love of god, “Hey Man Nice Shot” is not about Cobain, Filter is on record as saying that the song was written before his death despite not being released until after, this is a great list except for the morons.

“You Were Right” by Badly Drawn Boy pays respect to Jeff Buckley, Frank Sinatra, Kurt Cobain, and John Lennon. It’s not directly about them, but a wonderful song if you ax me.

dan | 12/10/2006, 5:49 pm EST

“Acuff-Rose” by Uncle Tupelo, about songs written by the famed country music duo.

Also, to clear up some REM-related ephemera:
It has never been specified who “E-Bow The Letter” was written about. “Let Me In” was a post-Cobain memorial tribute. The entire “Monster” album was dedicated to River Phoenix, but the only song that might be about him actually comes from the “New Adventures In Hi-Fi” album: “Departure.”

Meanwhile, Johnny Depp and Gibby Haynes had a band called P. They had a song called “Michael Stipe.”

Although they were already mentioned, my favorite ones are the following two masterpieces:
“Empty Garden” – Elton John for John Lennon
“Shine on You Crazy Diamond” – Pink Floyd for Syd Barrett

mike:
“How to Disappear Completely” is inspired by an advice Michael Stipe gave to Thom Yorke for getting to perform when things were too overwhelming. He used to say to himself: “I’m not here. This isn’t happening.”

“Stuck in a Moment You Can’t Get Out of” was written for Michael Hutchence. I believe “Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own,” was written by Bono as a tribute to his father who had recently died.

There is “Have a Go, Merchant” by Morrissey, which I believe was written after Natalie Merchant recorded “Everyday is Like Sunday.”

Note to Charlie:
Ziggy Stardust was not written for Hendrix. Ziggy Stardust was a fictional character. In 1972 it became the first alter-ego Bowie adapted during his career when he introduced himself as Ziggy Stardust and his band as the Spiders.

The name Ziggy most likely came from a tailor shop called “Ziggy’s” that Bowie saw from a train one time. It could also have been taken from “Iggy” Pop from the stooges. Bowie, obviously a fan, helped to save his career. Could have also been from “twiggy”, whom was the model that appeared with him on his album “pin-ups”

“one of the few Christian names I could find beginning with the letter ‘Z’.” – Bowie to this very magazine
