Lunchtime Poll: Let’s Say You’re Dying …

12/6/06, 11:23 am EST

RamonesNot to be morbid or whatever — but you’re dying. The gods of rock are granting you one last wish: To see any show that’s taken place anywhere at anytime in the past. Whose concert do you go see, where and when does it take place and why do you choose it?

Our off-the-top-of-our-head pick? The Ramones at the Roundhouse in London with the Flamin Groovies on July 4, 1976.

Probably the beatles at Shea
Woodstock (the original)
One of pink floyds “Wall” shows
u2 on the boy tour.

Adam | 12/6/2006, 11:47 am EST

I’d have to say any of the Weezer pre-equal length leg shows (i.e. 95-previous), or the upcoming Clap Your Hands Say Yeah show where Elizabeth Goodman dies of embarrassment when the emo kids she hates show up and start singing all the songs at the top of their lungs.

Tom Tuerff | 12/6/2006, 11:48 am EST

No question — The Beatles’ first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show, just for the opportunity to see it in COLOR.

Sanchez | 12/6/2006, 11:51 am EST

Pearl Jam – 07/11/03 – Tweeter Center: Mansfield (Boston), MA [preset 50m/main set 165m]…Epic Show, Eddie Promised the first night he wouldn’t repeat a single tune on the whole 3 night stint in Tweeter/MASS. Saw night one and they drained some classics that night….The third show – This one – they played acoustic for an hour before 2+ hours of live stuff. True to his word all they repeated was a Ledbetter as a *goodnight* to Boston…

Nirvana 05/13/90 – Duffy’s Tavern, Lincoln, NE…Probably one of the only Soundboard bootlegs I ever bought pre-Internet, Awesome set – All Bleach tunes – pre-Nevermind, And Nirvana live at a Tavern? Man, I wore that tape out. Oh and the obvious reason – Never get to see them again, ever.

Smashing Pumpkins – Live at the Metro December 2nd-2000…For all the obvious resons. Wicked Set List, last time the three of them will probably ever share the stage again, smaller venue…The big *Farewell and Goodnight*

JIm | 12/6/2006, 11:54 am EST

Beatles doing “Let It Be” on the rooftop, Queen in Wembley or the Doors in New Haven

Scott P | 12/6/2006, 12:27 pm EST

I’d probably go back and see the Flaming Lips at the Metro on the true Millenium New Year’s Eve (2000). That was one of the best and craziest shows I’ve ever seen.

Also any Clash show during their prime would be worth it.

For the best book on the Ramones read,
“On The Road With The Ramones”
http://www.ontheroad withtheramones.com

This is a MUST-HAVE book for all Ramones fans. It’s an inside look from the people who were actually there witnessing and experiencing all the extreme highs and lows of one of rock’s greatest bands. The Ramones’ music has influenced nearly every power pop, punk, alternative, and metal band. Monte A. Melnick served as The Ramones tour manager from their early New York club days at CBGB’s in the ’70s to their farewell gigs in 1996. Filled with memorabilia including photographs and interviews collected along the way, this is his view of life on the road with the band as “baby-sitter to psychiatrist, booking agent to travel agent, paymaster to van driver.” It’s such a fascinating read, you’ll have a hard time putting it down. Buy it, read it, and then revisit their albums. You’ll never look at the Ramones in the same light.

Hello,

I missed all of that Rage Against the Machine stuff as well so I would like to see them live in front of the Democratic Convention.

If I was going to die after the show, I would have liked to see the Lollapalusa show from this past summer in Chicago. That way, I could put my death off for three days.

Reality Check | 12/6/2006, 6:34 pm EST

Am I to pick from actual famous shows, or create a do-able fictional show? The latter is much more fun.

I’ll take Tool as the headliner from the Aenima era, with Kyuss and Corrosion of Conformity as the openers.

Reality Check | 12/6/2006, 6:36 pm EST

Danny,

bod dylan 1966 free trade haal or the judas show. and do i have to explain.
either that or the beatles at she stadium
or woodstock
or montery pop festival
but dylan would be the number one choice

auramac | 12/6/2006, 9:53 pm EST

Dylan ‘66 would be phenomenal, but I’d have to go with the most intensely surreal of them all- Beatles at Shea. Shakin’ all over!

S-P | 12/6/2006, 10:05 pm EST

Dylan 66 would be cool, but all the booing would just depress me, and make me wanna punch everyone down, so I wouldnt be able to enjoy the music that much….

My choice: one of the four actual played dates of the Anarchy Tour 1977: Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Damned, Buzzcocks, all live in their prime….a punk’s dream

First off, Elizabeth, who is this “our” you refer to??? Does the entire staff at Rolling Stone all agree with your choice? If so, that’s kind of sad, but it does illustrate the lack of vision at Rolling Stone these days.

My choice would probably Glastonbury 1995.

Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes, promoting their major label debut “I Don’t Wanna Go Home” in Asbury Park, 1975. Crowds pouring out into hotdog stands. The whole show wired into a speaker by the counter for those who couldn’t make it in. Ferris wheels turning around, the Atlantic Ocean right there, girls on the boardwalk…New Jersey before heroine and strip malls. Springsteen and Clarence Clemons featured towards the end.

3. The Doors in Columbus just after Morrison was arrested in Florida.

grateful dead
6/27/1985 Saratoga Performing Arts Center
Its basically a legendary concert in my hometown. To sum it up, SPAC never limited there crowds, and allowed any number of fans to come. That is, when the grateful dead came this year, 40,000 people went. I’ve been to “sold out” shows there with 25,000, and it takes you 45 minutes to get from the food stand to your spot on the lawn or your seat in the ampitheatre.+15,000. yea that’s insane. i was born in 92 though so i wasn’t even alive then.

Without a doubt, I’d see Elvis play the benefit show in Hawaii in the early sixties. Last live show he played before getting lost in Hollywood-last glimpse of the original king…
