Is This Man the Greatest Metal Vocalist Ever?

12/6/06, 12:56 pm EST

Robert Plant

According to Hit Parader, which has compiled a list of Heavy Metal’s All-Time Top 100 Vocalists, Robert Plant is the best singer the metal world has ever heard (get the full list after the jump). Also in the top ten? Judas Priest’s Rob Halford, Queen’s Freddie Mercury, Iron Maiden’s Bruce Dickinson, both Ozzy (who would be our pick for #1) and Ronnie James Dio and um, Steven Tyler. Right there you start to get the sense that this list of metal vocalists is more like a list of any vocalists.

Kurt Cobain, who is apparently a necessary part of any list of rock icons, no matter what the parameters, comes in at #20. Gavin Rossdale (no, seriously) charts at #75, Scott Stapp at #68, and in an interesting section midway through we have the apparently secretly metal British trio of Rod Stewart, Ray Davies and David Bowie. Right. So this list needs some work. How would you fix it?

Not to take away from the absurdities of some of the names on that list but where in the hell is MIKE PATTON?

Anonymous | 12/6/2006, 1:19 pm EST

where’s josh homme?

skerr | 12/6/2006, 1:24 pm EST

This is an awful list! Apparently ‘metal’ is anything from funk (Kiedis) to grunge (Vedder, Cobain) to easy rock (Rod Stewart). Why reproduce this list? RS, you’re slipping. You could have at least turned it into your own list of rock’s greatest vocalists. I would respect that.

Drunk and Obese | 12/6/2006, 1:29 pm EST

Brian Johnson and David Lee Roth got screwed.

(Hagar over Roth??? Wha?)

Sanchez | 12/6/2006, 1:29 pm EST

Shouldn’t Ace Frehley be right under King Diamond?

Stuporfly | 12/6/2006, 1:33 pm EST

Given bespectacled nerd metal fans frequently credit the Kinks with inventing Heavy Metal because of their early singles, seeing Ray Davies on the list is no great shakes. But they should have settles for Top 50, or even Top 25. Those are truly the dregs scattered throughout. Fred Durst and Scott Stapp? You know your favorite genre is in trouble when you see those nitwits making the grade.

Any list Gene Simmons can feature prominently in must immediately be considered flawed, unless of course the list is something like BIGGEST USELESS CREEPS or something. Know who might top such a list? ELizabeth Goodman, perhaps.

Neds Fat Sister | 12/6/2006, 1:41 pm EST

Yeah, no shit. Garbage.
Dave Mustaine robbed by Scott Stapp, Bret Michaels, and Don Dokken..HAHAHAHAHA!

Don | 12/6/2006, 1:44 pm EST

What? My bad… For someone reason when I clicked here I thought this was “a list of Heavy Metal’s All-Time Top 100 vocalists”… What was I thinking?

Seriously, they could have called this list “Top 100 breakfast taco fillings” and it would be less of a mind-numging misnomer.

Mike | 12/6/2006, 1:53 pm EST

Wait just a god damn minute. #28 – Steve mother fuckin’ Perry?

Steve | 12/6/2006, 2:02 pm EST

The Kinks and early Rod Stewart (esp. with the Jeff Beck group) were big influences on metal, IMO. (at least the more melodic side of metal)

I think Rod is getting props here mostly for his contributions to the first couple Jeff Beck albums, which I’m guessing just about every classic metal guitarist listened to at least a few times in their lives.

King Bee | 12/6/2006, 2:56 pm EST

Almost as absurbed as Rolling Stone’s crappy lists.

mort3965 | 12/6/2006, 3:08 pm EST

Mike Patton should be top 25 easily…maybe his work with Mr. Bungle moved him out of the metal category in their minds.

Dallas | 12/6/2006, 3:10 pm EST

I mean it’s supposed to be a metal list, isn’t it? More like hard rock list to me. If the criteria is really just Hard Rock, then where the fuck is Mike Patton, Brandon Boyd, and H.R.?

me | 12/6/2006, 3:12 pm EST

i think everyone here who’s complaining dosn’t understand any of music’s history, if they did they would know that metal isn’t just the new screaming band around today.

crumpets | 12/6/2006, 3:14 pm EST

where’s kip winger?!?!
i demand a recount.

baller | 12/6/2006, 3:17 pm EST

Equally as absurd as rolling stones lists.

Lawrence | 12/6/2006, 3:17 pm EST

I love Zep, but I challange anybody to better the pipes on Chris Cornell Soundgarden/Temple of the Dog records. Ozzy is up there as well.

ben | 12/6/2006, 3:17 pm EST

you guys used to be a rock and roll magazine. you sold out to rap crap . do not do polls about something you know nothing about. stick to rap shit, thank you

Brian | 12/6/2006, 3:18 pm EST

This is, hands down, the worst list that’s ever been written. Ever. Ann fucking Wilson? Tom Araya’s like buried on the list. Bruce Dicksinson below Freddie Mercury who, God rest his soul, should not even be on here. Queen? Not metal. Very great hard rock band, but not metal. And if you want to argue some of these bands influenced metal and shold be on here, then should we add the blues artists that inspired Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath? Bullshit bullshit.

RushFan | 12/6/2006, 3:19 pm EST

All I can say is that if Scott Stapp is on a “metal” list, then the metal I listen to is pretty different than the “metal” these guys are talking about.
Phil from Pantera should be in the top 10. The guy can do amazing things with his voice. And what the heck are those guys from Linkin Park doing on this list?

B. Breeg | 12/6/2006, 3:21 pm EST

Led Zepplin is not a metal band, and robert plant is not a metal singer, come to think of it neither are half the people on this list. How dumb can you get? Besides everyone knows Bruce Dickinson is the greatest metal singer of all time!

Fatbill | 12/6/2006, 3:25 pm EST

What the hell? Like none of these people are metal. And Bon Scott isn’t even as good as the dude who replaced him.

Banjo | 12/6/2006, 3:25 pm EST

i…um…well you..uhhh…huh?
there are so many things wrong with this list..i don’t know where to begin! First, everyone at hit parader gets musical history lessons, then scrap the list and start over.
As a personal bias, it was Hendrix’s guitar work that would even remotely put him in a metal category, not his voice. morons

dean2302 | 12/6/2006, 3:30 pm EST

why isnt Liam Gallagher in to 20 at least! and why is fred durst in there?

Nate | 12/6/2006, 3:36 pm EST

What the? How is Geddy Lee so high? Rush is respected for their music but Geddy Lee sucks as a vocalist. I agree with Max, where is the Patton? Haggar above Diamond Dave. Please, no more lists. You’re just going to screw it up.

rick james | 12/6/2006, 3:38 pm EST

robert plant + freddie mercury=CEDRIC BIXLER-ZAVALA

Dufus | 12/6/2006, 3:40 pm EST

Scott Stapp, Fred Durst, and Gavin Fucking Rossdale ????

These bags of dog shit make the list and Josh Homme doesn’t

What the fuck are these idiots thinking ??

mikeky | 12/6/2006, 3:43 pm EST

‘hit parader’ is the magazine that used to (maybe still does?) title articles with such phrases as:

‘out for blood’

‘bad to the bone’

‘coming back for more’

(insert mucho macho cliche here)

if you take ‘hit parader’ seriously, you have bigger problems than their stupid list.

Jesus | 12/6/2006, 3:45 pm EST

Man if this list is a heavy metal vocalist count than it is a shitty one at that, if it was intended as a metal vocalist count than you guys missed the point alot but placing Johnathan Davis from Korn above Maynard James Keenan of Tool is ridiculous.

yo | 12/6/2006, 3:48 pm EST

Axl Rose should be at least in the top five. Kurt Cobain should be in the top ten. This list is FUCKING BULLSHIT.

Eddie Vedder | 12/6/2006, 3:53 pm EST

this list has just upset me, gene simmons? brett micheals? robert plant?scott stapp? and why is trent reznor above layne staley. Why is Ville Valo on the list, why isn’t ozzy or dickenson #1. freddy mercury and getty lee are not metal.why does gavin rossdale beat peter steele, why is chester the molester from lp above sully and rob zombie. why is the singer from puddle of mud on the list. i could go on forever but i would probably kill myself and kill the grunge revolution if there still was one

Everyday | 12/6/2006, 3:54 pm EST

Taking aside the music and just concentrating on the sound of the singer’s voice, Freddie Mercury? Metal? His was more operatic than anything. How funny. I half expected to see Karen Carpenter on this list. WTF?

anonymous2 | 12/6/2006, 3:56 pm EST

Axl rose should be # 2

dpr | 12/6/2006, 3:56 pm EST

Any list that has Fred Durst in it probably should’ve just made a Top 25 or a Top 50. Guess they only had so many to choose from. Glad to see Justin Hawkins squeeze on there, I think he’s amazing.

DarKMaTTeR | 12/6/2006, 4:00 pm EST

This is not a greatest metal singers list, not even greatest singers list. Curt Cobain (RIP) ranked 20? Really? I mean I like Nirvana too but he isnt nearly as skilled as some of those ranked below him (say Anselmo), real metal singers. Not to mention all those who should be higher on the list (Geoff Tate 14??) or even at least in the list. This list is hopeless.

Ouroboros | 12/6/2006, 4:03 pm EST

Bruce Dickinson, period.

N.Y.O.B. | 12/6/2006, 4:04 pm EST

What about the voice of Geddy Lee?
How did it get so high?
I wonder if he speaks like an ordinary guy…

Drew | 12/6/2006, 4:05 pm EST

So let me get this straight… Rolling Stone is mocking a “Greatest Ever” list when they themselves put Kurt Cobain in the top 20 of their “Greatest Guitarists Ever” list. That’s funny!

DarKMaTTeR | 12/6/2006, 4:06 pm EST

In my opinion there shouldnt even be rankings in music. There are no objective criteria. Everyone sees things in a different way. Besides, in music there’s nothing really to prove. Greatest musicians lists should not be ranked or have a fixed lenght

matt | 12/6/2006, 4:07 pm EST

What a piece of shit list. Most are not even metal. Also, a list automatically loses legitimacy when Sammy Hager is above Diamond Dave.

DanZbassman | 12/6/2006, 4:10 pm EST

I love Zeppelin, but they ain’t metal. Neither is GnR, Scott Stapp, or most of the others on this list.

I mean, David Bowie (one of my all time favorites) is NOT metal.

And how in the hell does Steven Tyler beat out Chris Cornell? Cornell is the best vocalist out today, metal or otherwise.

Just what were these guys smoking when the came up with this list?

Steve Perry??? Please.

Karl | 12/6/2006, 4:16 pm EST

What a crappy list… Steve Perry? Rod Stewart? Perry Farrell? Geez, why didn’t they put in Gordon Lightfoot or Neil Diamond or Neil Diamond while they were at it?

Sherry | 12/6/2006, 4:17 pm EST

Robert Plant is definitely #1 – but Chris Cornell should have been #2 and Axel #3.

BrandonG | 12/6/2006, 4:30 pm EST

This is a sick fucking joke, written by the worst main stream music magazine. Almost none 97% of these singers are not metal, don’t even bother adding yours. Rolling Stone reader. Goodman don’t bother us with trash.

Monika | 12/6/2006, 4:30 pm EST

Crappy Magazine, Crappy List. What do you expect? Kurt Cobain was not metal and he can’t sing! Why is Ann Wilson at the bottom? And Where is Lita ford?

MJM | 12/6/2006, 4:46 pm EST

Dave Mustaine’s a terrible singer so it’s obvious why people like Don Dokken are on there..because regardless of music THEY CAN SING. but Anthony Keidis come on he’s not a good singer to begin with let alone one of the best metal singers ever. Ian Astbury @ 90? Is there no God?

Mike | 12/6/2006, 4:48 pm EST

Any list that includes Gary Cherone is not a list I’d want to be on! Besides, when was Queen a metal band, or Aerosmith for that matter, or Led Zep, or Pearl Jam, or Nirvana? Fact is there aren’t 100 metal bands that were worth a shit to make a list with. Its a copycat genre and there are only a handful of metal bands thatr mattered at all.

Johnny Hardcock | 12/6/2006, 4:49 pm EST

It’s stupid to try to even define metal, let alone pick 100 metal vocalists. It’s a top ten list, at best. Five, more like.

Johnny Hardcock | 12/6/2006, 4:54 pm EST

Like to define metal, you almost have to break it down by decade.

Shit, Cream and Blue Cheer were metal in 1968.

Hunter | 12/6/2006, 4:57 pm EST

Eddie Vedder should easily be in the top 5.

Brett | 12/6/2006, 4:58 pm EST

Hey,
At-LEAST we got rock’s greatest blowtorch –I mean Axl Rose, on the list, that’s a start. But, come OONNN… Bon Scott, Steven Tyler, Freddie Mercury, Paul Rodgers, AND Robert Plant, ain’t got nothin’ on “—DO YOU KNOW WHERE THE FUCK YOU AAARRE? YOU’RE IN THE JUNGLE, BABY, TIME TO FUCKIN’ DIE . . .!”
Also, we know Robert Plant ain’t got nothin’ on Ozzy. Ever listened to Black Sabbath’s “Supernaut”? Exactly. We’ll call Black Sabbath metal. Led Zeppelin were a different story.
How does Bon Scott get ahead of Axl Rose? You listen to Bon Scott sing “Whole Lotta Rosie,” THEN find the live cover where Axl Rose wipes Bon Scott’s vocal performance OFF THE TABLE! as Guns N’ Fuckin’ Roses slam and bang their way through the song in a tiny club in London in 1987.
As for Steven Tyler, Axl Rose’s pugnacious delivery of “Mama Kin” has owned that song for quite some time. The song is Axl’s.
Ever watched the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert, where everybody pussyfoots around with various Queen songs, until the end where “Bohemian Rhapsody” is finally covered, and Axl comes out for the hard rock break? If you have seen it, I needn’t say anything more. THAT, is why Axl kicks ass as a vocalist. Are you going to tell me Freddie Mercury is more metal than that? He could never be so vicious. ONLY Axl could. Only Axl.
Paul Rodgers? Free? “All Right Now”? ‘Alllll…..riiiiight…..now, baby–’ —(snoring) . . . Gimme a break, goddamnit. Turn up “It’s So Easy”!!!
Oh, and as for Bruce Dickinson and Iron Maiden, when a British journalist asked Axl Rose if his band “has anything in common with Iron Maiden,” he replied, “I hope not.” I hope Bruce Dickinson is not considered the better vocalist. “I hope not” indeed.
So yeah, if we get Axl up a little higher on that list, that’s all I can think of to do to fix the list. After that, it’s a fuckin’ crapshoot. Oh, and while I’m posting a rant about Axl, I should probably – appropriately! – ask that you take Jon Bon-bon Jovi-al off the list. He’s not metal. Axl is. Thank you.

scooby | 12/6/2006, 5:06 pm EST

i have to admit some if not alot of those people i didnt know, but Scott Stapp and Fred Durst? Really? Its like they got a list of every metal band ever and put the frontman on the list. Where’s Josh Homme then?

tim | 12/6/2006, 5:11 pm EST

axl rose, robert plant, freedie mercury , david lee roth , ozzy, mike patton
are the best singers of heavy metal
axl rose number 1 in my opinion
fred durst lol crazy

Dude | 12/6/2006, 5:13 pm EST

Obviously they didn’t want a good list, they wanted to sell magazines… and obviously Kurt Cobain sells well. Apparently the idea of an unremarkable singer and guitarist who writes one humongous hit song and then kills himself sends a message that strikes deep in the heart of teenagers.

Plant, Mercury, Tyler, Cobain, and basically every you named but Halford, Ozzy, and Dio aren’t metal.

wrecksracer | 12/6/2006, 5:14 pm EST

Lee Ving from Fear!

boooshhh | 12/6/2006, 5:14 pm EST

ROBERTS #1 IN my book
Freddie Mercury#2
and i would put gerard way on there if kurt and amy lee made the list

PeAsE

J.S. | 12/6/2006, 5:17 pm EST

Rod Stewart’s appearence on this list doesn’t surprise me, considering he was the vocalist of one of the first bands to pioneer “metal,” The Jeff Beck Group.

billytp | 12/6/2006, 5:20 pm EST

freddie Mercury got robbed, he’s #1 hands down (but I will not complain about Plant) Cornell should be hiigher than Steven Tyler. P.S. I’m a HUGE Pearl Jam fan & Vedder has a great voice, but does not compare to the cornell, mercury, dio… he’s just a damn good vocalist. 23rd is a respectable spot for him.

Seth P. | 12/6/2006, 5:21 pm EST

You’re right JS. Stewart’s work on those first two Beck records is great, particularly on “Shapes of Things” and “All Shook Up.”

patrick | 12/6/2006, 5:21 pm EST

OK where is Cedric Bixler Zavala of the Mars Volta??

First of all this list does not seem to be for METAL VOCALISTS but Vocalists in General (Steve Perry, David Bowie, and Even Freddy Mercury, were NOT Metal)- maybe they were Hard Rock at times, but thats even pushing it!!
and FRED DURST?? Don’t get me started!! – HE Rapped, and Poorly at that!! And when he sang “remember that cover of Faith” -it was horrible!!

If we are going with Great Vocalists (in No order, and since Rolling Stone didn’t bother with closing the category to metal -just look at the list- Neither will I)

Robert Plant (yes I agree with this one)
Freddy Mercury
Jeff Buckley
Chris Cornell
Cedric Bixler-Zavala
Geoff Tate
Mike Patton
Jimmy Gnecco of OURS
Roger Daltrey
Axl Rose (yes I kinda hate him now, but back when GnR came out NO ONE ELSE, sounded like him in Hard Rock)
Ian Astbury (not so much for vocal range, but for the feeling and emotion in his vocals!)
Ronnie James Dio (if you are going with Metal, you have to include him)

Seth P. | 12/6/2006, 5:22 pm EST

Stewart’s work since the Jeff Beck Group has, however, sucked harder than just about anyone.

patrick | 12/6/2006, 5:26 pm EST

You are mistaken man! There is Not a Better Metal Vocal Performance than – ROD STEWART’S – You’re in My Heart/ Your in my soul -lol -WHAT THE CHRIST was RS thinking!

Orion | 12/6/2006, 5:27 pm EST

I agree, this list is moronic regarding “heavy metal” vocalists but my top 3 picks would be…

1/ Chris Cornell
2/ Geoff Tate
3/ Bruce D.

boooshhh | 12/6/2006, 5:30 pm EST

JEFF BUCKLEY!!!!!!!

Dizzle | 12/6/2006, 5:58 pm EST

I don’t care what kind of list this is….What the FUCK is Scott Stapp doing on it!?!!?

m@ | 12/6/2006, 5:59 pm EST

robert plant sang flat too often to be #1.

freddie mercury has twice the voice and style of anyone else on the list.

and max is right. where the hell is mike patton? that dude’s got the most versitile voice in rock.

darcangel | 12/6/2006, 6:37 pm EST

Geez the list is flawed!!!!
For me personally my top five would be:
1 – Freddy Mercury
2 – Amy Lee
3 – David Bowie
4 – Gavin Rossdale
5 – Jonathan Davies
I probably could keep going, but this will suffice.
To me their voices were/are both powerful and sexy!

Marv | 12/6/2006, 7:06 pm EST

darcangel, Bowie is not metal. Great, but not metal. Fuck, this list is a joke. Steve motherfuckin Perry at 28?! I think Serj Tankian is way underrated, especially being only two spots above STEVE PERRY. Say what you want about his lyrics, his delivery is fuckin insane, what real metal is.

To N.Y.O. B. | 12/6/2006, 7:09 pm EST

Like the shoutout to Pavements- Radio. Most of these people on this list are not even metal. I think Bowie and Mecury had and have the best voices of rock of all time but they are not metal. I would go with Rob Halford.

Ndna Jnz | 12/6/2006, 7:13 pm EST

As long as it is not really a metal list, how did they miss Jon Anderson (of YES)?

Ray Davies | 12/6/2006, 7:14 pm EST

When the guy who wrote sentimental songs like Waterloo Sunset and the whole Village Green Preseventaion Society album become metal. Why not put Brian Wilson, Paul Macartney on the list while they are at it.

barrel | 12/6/2006, 7:23 pm EST

just so you know rolling stone didnt make this so stop bitching at them

Kash | 12/6/2006, 7:53 pm EST

I’ll just stick with what I know and not try to sound pretentious. This isn’t metal, this is rock music inb general

1. Freddie Mercury
2. Maynard James Keenan
3. Robert Plant
4. Roger Dahltrey
5. MEATLOAF

breakcycl | 12/6/2006, 8:07 pm EST

I think some of you need to step outside of the box…. This list I agree is definately not metal… But I think a frontman (cause this is really the best front man list in my opinion)Is more than just singing ability.. it is the ability to capture the crowd and produce that magical raw power… Cobain for instance was not a great vocalist however, when he performed via live or recorded it was guteral and grabbed your attention.

Just an opinion..
As far as great vocalists go I never cared for all of queens music but freddie mercury was the best vocalist ever.

destroy all hamsters | 12/6/2006, 8:23 pm EST

what about original iron maiden singer paul di’anno?

Rich | 12/6/2006, 10:51 pm EST

I always viewed Robert Plant and Led Zeppelin as transcending the term “metal.” They carved out their own unique niche of Blues. For Hear Ya to include the word “Plant” on a metal list is almost an exercise in bad taste.

Archimedes | 12/6/2006, 10:52 pm EST

another artificially padded list just so some damn rag could put some nice round number on its cover. Here’s the top ten

1 Robert Plant
2 Ozzy
3 Halford
4 Bruce Dickinson
5 Axl Rose
6 Bon Scott
7 Alice Cooper
8 Dio
9 James Hetfield
10 Sebastian Bach

Yes Axl is only 5th but he hasn’t done much in the last ten yrs, as much as I love the guy. And yes, I know, Bach is the Savage Animal now, but back in the day few could touch him or Skid Row. Freddie isn’t metal, not even close. Neither is Paul Rogers or Diamond Dave, sorry. Zep is still number one and Plant is the voice that brought the music to life. Ozzy was never quite as big nor as revolutionary, even with Sabbath.

Anonymous | 12/6/2006, 11:10 pm EST

How can anyone doubt Steve Perry’s vocal ability???

david darianto | 12/7/2006, 1:02 am EST

Hey man, this is not a “metal vocalist” list. How come they put bret michael and forgetting Joey Ramone and Glen Danzig??

MetalBeatles | 12/7/2006, 1:28 am EST

Y’all need to get some sense about yourselves. There are only 5 metal vocalists worth talking about. Now shut up, bitches..
Love, LennonMcCartney

#1 Axl
#2 Plant
#3 Ozzy
#4 David Lee
#5 Mick

Granted, these aren’t the leaders of the heaviest bands of all-time. But, they are the men who led the revolution after our band, (The Beatles) invented the four-man band format that shook the world. Beatles-Stones-Zep-Sabbath-Hal en-Guns—-We’re still waiting….

MetalBeatles | 12/7/2006, 1:33 am EST

LennonMcCartney has love for Chris Cornell, but he has never shown the desire to rule the world necessary for the job (why can’t Bono be more metal).

david | 12/7/2006, 2:24 am EST

how in the world is max from Sepultura not on this list he’s only the most influential metal singer of the last twenty five years or so all the gutteral stuff you hear he perfected it. Plant is a fine choice for number one if you consider him metal which I don’t.

Gaz | 12/7/2006, 4:24 am EST

Bowie flirted with Metal/ Hard Rock in his early days as did most of the other names on the list. Some of the tracks from “The Man who sold the World” were up there with the best metal songs from the era & Bowies thin voice was a perfect contrast to the macho cock rock metal vocals of that time.
Robert Plant did grate at times.

DGG | 12/7/2006, 6:31 am EST

Where do you draw the line on what’s metal or not? And what percentage of a band’s catalog needs to be “metal” for it to qualify? Same with punk…

If you wanna talk about lists that need work you should start with that embarassing 100 greatest guitarists ever thing you did not so long ago, though.

noname | 12/7/2006, 6:44 am EST

Absolutely agree with N 1 & N 2
This is the way it has to be for eternity. But…………………….Ud o Dirkschneider N 41, King Diamond N 85………….What a terrible absurd misconception!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!

DarKMaTTeR | 12/7/2006, 8:32 am EST

I see this “greatest metal singers” funeral turned into a forum for posting thousants of other “greatest” lists. Guys, this is pointless. This list is hopeless and it isnt worth trying to fix. Any ranking regarding musicians is always questionable, yours and mine (the one I didnt bother posting) included.

g | 12/7/2006, 8:38 am EST

steve tyler? mick jagger? steve perry? jon bon jovi? and other obvious square pegs…please…the list is ‘metal singers’…

Steve | 12/7/2006, 9:22 am EST

Since this is more of a hard rock list rather than a metal list, here are my top 5:

1. Robert Plant
2. Eddie Vedder
3. Chris Cornell (during Soundgarden, not Audioslave)
4. Roger Daltrey
5. Brian Johnson

Kliffee | 12/7/2006, 9:28 am EST

Rob Halford – Judas Priest
Geoff Tate – Queensryche
King Diamond – Merciful Fate
Paul Stanley – KISS
Michael Sweet – Stryper

Kliffee | 12/7/2006, 9:31 am EST

You call this list metal?
These singers are NOT metal:
Anthony Keidis
Nancy Wilson
Eddie Vedder
Paul Rodgers
Gavin Rosdale
Fred Durst(ick!)

Odys Coltrane | 12/7/2006, 9:37 am EST

What a lame list. Might as well throw Gwen Stefani on it while you’re at it, she’s about as appropriate as more than half the names.

Sherry | 12/7/2006, 9:37 am EST

And Kurt Cobain? Why is he even on this list? Dreary rock, that’s what Nirvana was.
Also, Steven Tyler’s voice makes my hair stand on end. Awful.

stinker | 12/7/2006, 9:39 am EST

WTF!
HOW can these people put Ian Gillian (of Deep Purple for the ignorants) at 43!!!!!!!! What is wrong with them!! He should be all the way up, next to R. Plant!!
Not convinced?? OK, just listen to The DP In Japan LP and in particular to the Strange kind of woman track..
Those who have come up with this list are plain stupid.. and i’m not even mentionin all the other atrocities i’ve seen (ok, one more example: Axl Rose 11th???!!!!)
BULLSHIT!

Sort Sol | 12/7/2006, 10:23 am EST

This is by no means a purebred “Heavy Metal”-list. Thus, my favourites also come from a wider spectrum of rock music:
1. W. Axl Rose
2. Robert Plant
3. Mick Jagger
4. Stiv Bators (The Dead Boys)
5. Bon Scott
6. Bobby Gillespie (Primal Scream)
7. Matt Johnson (The The)
8. Jim Morrison
9. Iggy Pop
10. David Bowie

Jacob | 12/7/2006, 10:27 am EST

aaron lewis? are you kidding me?

Mark | 12/7/2006, 11:08 am EST

Jon Davis beat both Maynard Keenan and David Lee Roth.

Wow.

MojoPin | 12/7/2006, 11:30 am EST

How the fuck does David Lee Roth get bested by Sammy Hagar?

charliemapleton | 12/7/2006, 11:33 am EST

One word, three initials:DLR.Imagine that in Roman stone marble on an album cover.

Whalespoon | 12/7/2006, 11:54 am EST

IMO, the main problem with the list is that there aren’t 100 good metal vocalists in the entire world. Yes–there are some great metal vocalists. Just not 100 of them…

DS | 12/7/2006, 12:05 pm EST

From a pure “metal” stand point, these are the best:

Halford
OZZY
Dio
Dicken son
Axl

Of course I think many grndge vocalists are great, but they should not be on this list, not nay other classic/hard rock greats like Jagger, Rod Stewart, etc.)

Hearya - Oz | 12/7/2006, 12:19 pm EST

Hey Rich – Saw your comment earlier. That list came from Hit Parader. HearYa wasn’t involved in the creation. Rod stewart was on it for chrissakes.

to rollingstoned | 12/7/2006, 12:50 pm EST

It’s obvious this list is in no way metal. Basically should just say best frontman or rock vocalist period. You really can’t argue with Plant as number one on any list, but people need to realize the sort of contribution that guys like Eddie Vedder and Layne Staley have made on true rock singers. Both powerful and unique. As a frontman, no one can interact and captivate a crowd like Vedder. He speaks to the crowd as equals and the environment at a show is truly astounding. RS is a joke and these lists only prove it. Long live the Lord of Metal that is Rod Stewart. He is beyond bad ass!!! Come on…

read carefully! | 12/7/2006, 1:14 pm EST

The list is from Hit Parader. NOT HearYa or Rolling Stone. HearYa posted it for further banter. Read their blog: http://www.hearya.com/2006/12/ 04/hit-paraders-top-100-metal- vocalists-of-all-time/

clint | 12/7/2006, 2:56 pm EST

Mike Patton should be N0.1, where the **** is he on the list? best vocalist of all time.

Gatman | 12/7/2006, 9:04 pm EST

wtf why the hell isnt jimi hendrix at least in the top ten

DarKMaTTeR | 12/9/2006, 1:24 pm EST

Jimi Hedrix isnt top 10 because his voice sucks. He should be on the list at all. This is a list for singers, not guitarists. Hendrix is guitar god but a crappy singer.

DarKMaTTeR | 12/9/2006, 1:25 pm EST

correction: should not be on the list at all

john | 12/12/2006, 7:43 am EST

Vedder is better than many of the guys above him. Are you telling me he is not a better vocalist than Jagger, Roth, etc. I agree is not on the level of Mercury, Cornell, Tate, Perry, etc. as vocalists, but he is damn good. Cornell and Dickinson have said in interviews how good they think he is as a singer. These lists are absurd!

Michal the polish guy | 12/13/2006, 10:34 pm EST

Oh and i went 2 c Australian Pink Floyd last Thursday! :D

Brad | 12/15/2006, 10:03 am EST

There’s so much wrong with this list, it’s hard to know where to start. But if we’re talking metal vocalists, any list of this length that doesn’t have Matt Barlow’s (ex-Iced Earth) name on it is automatically discredited. Even people who dislike Iced Earth recognize Barlow’s work as superlative.

jess | 12/15/2006, 2:39 pm EST

Justin Nizza | 12/25/2006, 3:32 am EST

Hmmm, Rolling Stones legacy of innacurate yet intriguing countdowns continues I see?

I can see how Robert Plant could be considered the greatest metal vocalist of all time considering he’s the prototype of the Heavy Metal singer and set what all metal vocals would be after him but some of the people on here just don’t make sense. What Rolling Stone has a tendency to do is mix together those that influenced the genre the countdown specifes with people of the actual genre and that tends to make the list seem rather muttled and incomprehensible.

They try to take people from every aspect of the genre and that confuses a lot of people.

It was the same with their list of greatest guitar players a few years back.

You’ve just got to understand that. It’s not based on just ability and prowess, but influence and importance to the beginnings and ongoings of the genre itself.

Ozzy Ozbourne
Freddie Mercury
Bruce Dickinson
Maynard James Keenan
Chris Cornell
Geoff Tate
Ronnie James Dio
Robert Plant
Steven Tyler
David Lee Roth

The fact that Wes Scantlin is anywhere near this list takes away all credability. Layne Staley should be number two anyway.

Plant was a great singer….however……Rob Halford and DIO are by far the best ever…..a toss up between the two for 1st n 2nd place…..ALL OTHERS are a DISTANT third!

Justin | 12/4/2007, 12:17 am EST

This list is stupid, and why the hell do people think Axl Rose can sing, he is a joke and makes music look bad. Same with Steven Tyler, he is an amazing singer, but the last I heard Aerosmith isn’t metal, just rock and roll. If they make a metal list, why the hell do they add all these singers from bands that are just generic rock. Metal is Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, Slayer and old Metallica, and I understand old metal (60’s is Queen and such, and deeply respect Freddie Mercury). And why in the hell is Mick Jagger on there?? He is a terrible singer and the Rolling Stones are garbage, and not even close to metal.

The list should go:

1. Rob Halford or Ronnie James Dio (both are too good to put number 2)
2. Ozzy
3. Robert Plant
4. Bruce Dickenson
5. Maynard James Keenan

What a fucking joke list. Oh and by the way, Glenn Tipton is better than most guitarists on the stupid *Best 100 Guitarists of All Time* list. Same with K.K. Downing, he is better than half those clowns, like Kurt Cobain.

#1 Bruce Dickenson
#2 Ronnie James Dio
#3 Glenn Danzig

#5 Tony Kakko (Sonata Arctica)
#6 Roy Khan (Kamelot)
#7 Hansi Kürsch (Blind Guardian)

and more than half the guys on there have no business being on this list as most of them cannot sing their way out of a paper bag that pro-tools cant even fix, and Glenn Danzig is no where on that list? you gotta be kidding me.

k, robert plant never wanted to be associated with heavy metal, neither did any of the other “pioneers” except for ozzy and john lennon
and according to lennon, he sang the first ever heavy metal song, so he should be on here

Robert Plant is NOT metal; it’s erroneous anyway because he is NOT a better singer than Rob Halford.

# 4 James LaBrie
# 5 Ozzy

Ok if your going to put Plant and Mercury on the top of the list when there not even metal, the least you can do is put Daltrey in top 5. I mean i personally like Daltrey better than Plant, but hey, thats just me.

You just can’t deny that Daltrey didn’t have an amazing voice.

apeman | 3/14/2009, 11:23 pm EST

freddie’s in a league of his own in my opinion. it’s stupid how loosely metal is defined. i say ozzy is the greatest metal singer of all time. metal as it is defined now is absolute shit.

Bakernator | 4/1/2009, 6:37 pm EST

Ian Gillan – 43rd???? More like top 3! He has the most incredible vocal range ever. Just listen to ‘Child In Time’ by Deep Purple, or ‘Disturbing The Priest’ by Black Sabbath as examples. Plus, he played Jesus…says it all really.

Anna | 4/15/2009, 3:51 pm EST

Freddie Mercury is definitly amazing.. He is my favourite for sure! What a voice!!

papadopoulos | 4/18/2009, 11:45 am EST

except the fact that list includes also non metal singers,i have to say that freddie mercury ang geoff tate are the best singers ever in every musical genre!Although Mercury has been highly praised,Tate seems to be ignored and that’s really annoying and also showing lack of really good taste-additionally,it seems you guys don’t have musical education and, especially, any knowledge about vocal abilities!Tate has an incredible vocal range(reaching 4 octaves),an opera singer treatment and most of all,he is the best at delivering your emotions in albums+in stage, where he transforms into an actor-singer.Overall,Tate is a singing monster, who has not been matched yet(this is quite possible that will never happen)

Burton C. Bell
