I didn’t realize Mariah Carey writes her own stuff, I always thought she was good but I respect her a lot more now, she has some catchy tunes. I think Madonna has overstayed her welcome and maybe should be docked points on the list for that. It seems like she just does things to stir up cntroversy with no real meaning behind them, for example her singing from a cross on her newest tour. Maybe there is a message that I dont know of, but it seems like a desperate grasp for attention.

If you think about it, the women who most influence rock are not performers. For example, Yoko Ono probably had the most influence on rock music because she broke up the Beatles.

It’s not accurate to say that Yoko Ono broke up the Beatles. First of all, you have no idea about why the Beatles broke up beyond what you get to hear from easily available information. Second of all, even if you follow that easily available, often sensationalized information in biographies and stories, all of the information without exception points to the fact that the Beatles were having in-fighting and various problems that weren’t directly related to Yoko Ono; the partnership was a rough one from about ‘67 onwards and the Beatles, in the view of most anyone who is educated on the subject, broke up for a whole myriad of reasons. Yoko Ono gets waaayy to much criticism from party lines and people with fashionable opinions.

Marie Osmond is obviously the most rockin’, bad-ass bitch of all time.

Liz Phair deserves a mention, even if she’s not at the forefront of taste or modern music right now, she was hugely influential on female rock. Lauryn Hill would be too if she weren’t completely insane.

As I was looking through people’s comments, I was stunned not to see a few names – until I reached Michael’s list. He hit the nail on the head. How on earth could any real list of influential females in rock music leave off Loretta Lynn, Emmylou Harris, and Dolly Parton?

Say what you will about this trio not being “rock” but Loretta was singing about birth control in “The Pill” while Madonna actually WAS still a virgin. She sang about knocking ladies out for trying to take her man in the songs “Fist City,” and “You Ain’t Woman Enough to Take My Man,” ages before Janet Jackson was a “Nasty Girl” and long before NWA or Eminiem were talking about beating down bitches. Real talent?? All three have pipes that Jessica Simpson, Courtney Love, Neko Case, and even the makers of Auto Tune would kill for. Maybe Christina might choose to do a bit more vocal acrobatics, but any of these three could do the same with ease if they actually WANTED to. Sure, some of the women who pass themselves off as singers these days (cough Fergie cough Paris cough Lindsay cough) might look better for the time being wearing boy shorts and a bra in an FHM Magazine spread, but few ladies (or men for that matter) have written a song half as good as “Jolene,” or “I Will Always Love You” (yes that song Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner ruined for all of us). How many women out there are still making relevent, raw, rocking, and grammy winning albums at the age of 70 all the while outsinging their red and white wearing rockstar producer in the process? Seriously, go see any of these women sing live today and they’ll blow away %99 of what is on MTV and in the pages of Rolling Stone.

Is it Hollywood Movies that make an influential female musician? Well, these three got that going for them as well. Like many since her, Dolly translated quite well to the big screen as a movie star in multiple smash hits. Loretta had a blockbuster biopic about her life years before Ray Charles and Johnny Cash did. And, Emmylou played an integral singing role in the Coen Brother’s modern day classic “O Brother, Where Art Thou.”

You want influential? Dolly pretty much invented the plastic surgery business. She certainly jumpstarted the craze. Where would Ashlee Simpson and Paris Hilton be (or at least, what would they LOOK LIKE) without her? Like she always said “It costs alot of money to look this cheap.” And Emmylou, throughout her long and illustrious career has worked with everyone from Neil Young to Linda Ronstadt to Bright Eyes to Steve Earle and on and on. Few artists have kept more integrity throughout a 40 year career. She is undoubtebly the greatest living duet partner on the planet – THE go-to girl when you need a female harmony singer. Plus, it does not hurt that she was the first female of what has since become a gigantic “alt-country” (or whatever the hell you want to call it) scene – singing with the cult superhero, Gram Parsons back in the late 60’s.

All three of these women are living legends that have commanded the respect and admiration of some of today’s biggest and most critically acclaimed musicians. These women are idols. They are all still performing and recording today. All three should make the list. Fricke, you know I’m right. I could go on and on…

If you would take the time to read before commenting I believe you would have found the title for this catagory is ROCK WOMEN, key word here being ROCK!

I can’t believe some of the names I’m seeing on this list. It’s pretty ridiculous actually. You know what I realized the other day? Madonna doesn’t actually have ANY great songs. Perhaps the only one that comes close is “Like a Prayer”. But really, despite this misconception that Madge is a “great and influential artist”, she hasn’t done anything that great. If anyone disagrees, I would like to hear a convincing argument about how “Crazy For You”, “True Blue” or “Cherish” is supposed to represent anything other than pleasant-enough synth pop.

No one could doubt that the secret to Madonna’s longetivity is her pop-savvy. Not in a trailblazing way, but in a cynical “what’s popular now?”. Really, she’s a record company’s dream. Every couple of years, when a new sound establishes itself as popular, Madonna will be sure to co-opt it, add a few hooks, maybe cook up a ho-hum controversy that will be talked about by everyone but will shock none of them and bam, Madge adds another 15 minutes to her cultural lifespan.

ok, madonna is not a pure “rock singer”, but who really is? i mean, were the beatles pop or rock? talking of women, was aretha franklyn rock? i think we should speak of “rock” as a soul attitude, as something which is more related to the attitude than music. “rock” is not just music, it is a “culture”. mariah carey is just a poor woman who sings (or shouts?) with unbearable rapers all the time. that is not rock in any sense. let alone paris hilton or britney.
i would def put madonna on the top of the list. she has the balls, has always broken lotsof rules, she has always written and produced what she does (who says the opposite is so stupid – they’d better read the credits of her cds, as simple as that).
also, madonna started her career with rock music before becoming famous and THAT is her real background. finally, you she has done lots of rock, even in her last concerts (she rocked hard there – she even did a rock duet in paris with lenny kravitz, both playing the guitar like mad).

Ani’s one of the best lyricists around- and who else can claim they started their own record label at eighteen (and penniless)? I agree that Aretha, Joan Jett, Gwen, Alannis and gobs of others deserve a spot, but Ani’s a true origional.

Madonna is no doubt a has-been, a sell out, she’s about as “rock n’ roll” as this junk they are calling country music is “real country.” Lohan, Hilton, and the like are all corporate sell outs with no real musical talent.

I think I just puked in my mouth a little reading all of this junk about Britney Spears. I will give props to Madonna for actually having talent and still going strong into middle age but when is the last time you saw or heard Madonna even mention or reference Britney? NO TALENT = NO FUTURE! Once their fan bases got past puberty all of a sudden they stopped selling albums – hello! That’s what Britney will be doing in 10-years – starring on some weight-loss reality show with Paris Hilton strung-out on crack trying to quit smoking and lose 50 lbs. Her music only appeals to little girls (male or female) that have no taste in true musical artists. All she has done is influence millions of girls (and boys) under the age of 13 to dress and act like mindless sluts. Put down the cigarettes and pick-up a guitar for god’s sake! The other weekend I was at Six Flags and I think I recorded a better album in one of those “be a star” recording booths. I would have to say Britney Spears. Just think back to 1998 when she stared and people said she was going to be a one hit wonder. Then it went to 2 hit wonder; then it was just her first album and her second would flop then it went on from there. Britney has shown she has the staying power. Look at how many other blondes have been out there and haven’t been able to even reach HALF the success of Ms. Spears Having the Queen of Pop do a duet with you, working with some of the best producers, starting to write more of her own music shows that Britney is ready to take control of her career and is ready for a new start. I have tried to ignore her or not bother with her, but it is simply impossible. She has the whole package. She can sing, dance, and has a amazing personality which a lot of singers don’t have now a days. Like Madonna, she has had a few bumps in the road of her career but I am sure she will be able to overcome this and be back better then ever.
