Yesterday we mentioned that our pick for most underappreciated indie rock album would be Hearts and Unicorns by Los Angeles-based woozy rockers Giant Drag. We love them. This mention came amidst vicious rumors that the duo — frontwoman/guitarist/shit-talker Annie Hardy and keyboardist/drummer/shit-taker Micah Calabrese — had broken up. We took this with a grain of salt. Hardy is the type of off-the-rails, ranting character who requires a long-suffering artistic foil to keep her sane and Calabrese, who has left the band before, is that person for her.
But now we see that Annie has indeed changed the description of Giant Drag on the band’s MySpace page to read “Annie and whoever else feels like doing it.” This is alarming.
A few months ago, Hardy posted a message on the Giant Drag Web site in which she described the band’s new material – for their follow up to their debut Hearts and Unicorns – as “my chemical romance multiplied by green day divided by the killers minus queen plus U2 times incubus minus eyeliner to the square root of pizza with a dash of AFI for taste.” GD, please talk to us! Does the rumored break-up mean no new record? Are you guys parting ways for real?
