Leaked: New Nas Track “Can’t Forget About You”

12/5/06, 3:18 pm EST

Nas

Everyone made such a big effin’ deal about Jay-Z’s triumphant return, but the comeback we should be hailing is that of one Nasir Jones, who has proven, despite the title of his forthcoming album, that hip hop is NOT, in fact, dead. Just get a load of the (strategically?) leaked “Can’t Forget About You,” a killer jam that melds Nas’ inimitable flow (sounding better than it has since the glory days of Illmatic and It Was Written) with the creaky appeal of an old-time blues record. Sure, the track’s got a bunch of things going for it: A Nat King Cole sample that manages to escape any hint of cheesiness, a singularly hypnotizing beat, and rhymes that showcase Nas’ prowess as a lyricist and cultural historian. But the best thing about this track is R&B ingĂ©nue Chrisette Michele, a young Def Jam siren who, at twenty-one, sounds eerily like Ella Fitzgerald.*

*Keep your eye on her folks, you heard it here first.

I like it. It is really different but the chorus makes it sound like a hip-hop song. Very cool, I think Nas deserves more credit and fame than he gets.

I love this song, looks like Rolling Stone might know a little about rap. Coulda fooled me by the 2 1/2 stars Stillmatic was givin. Everyone else and thier mother gave it 4 1/2 or better.

Rap go away!! this is rollingstone, which is supposed to be rock. not rap!

HipsterScienceAlgebraEquations | 12/5/2006, 5:20 pm EST

Rolling Stone has lost its way: I know your only 13 and you think that Panic at the Disco is the epitome of musical genius but comments like that just make you look like an idiot. Rollingstone hasn’t ever been about just Rock n’ Roll; they bring the cutting edge in all music genres so go get an Alternative press, post the new Fall Out Boy article on Buzznet and give back your music fan card because it has now officially been revoked. Declined!!!!!

Tellen Howitis | 12/5/2006, 5:24 pm EST

Dude, you had me until Fall Out Boy. Boo fucking hiss.

hip hop is an art form and like dead prez said “it’s bigger than hip hop”. Hip hop music is a political force as well. regardless, it’s been wanderin’ for a long time, and i hope that nas gets 5 stars from y’all

Ben | 12/5/2006, 7:07 pm EST

I’ve heard better from Nas, but not from anyone else in the hip-hop world. When one simply evaluates the music, and leaves out all gossip, record sales, girlfriends (Beyonce), etc., I find it hard to find anyone who can top many of the songs Nas has done. He is the Bob Dylan of rap – some crappy, overthought stuff, but more great songs than any other artist.

Teddy | 12/5/2006, 10:16 pm EST

Wow, am I the only person who thinks this song is fucking HOT!

Sam | 12/5/2006, 11:40 pm EST

Definitely not his best, but still really good, like ben said. fall out boy hahahahaha….those guys should be shot

gmountain2000 | 12/6/2006, 2:47 am EST

NaS is KING

this song is dope, but “black republican” is unbeleivable. All real hip-hop heads should buy his new cd.

Jack D | 12/6/2006, 11:41 am EST

Rap aint music.

tom wieler | 12/6/2006, 1:06 pm EST

hey ignorant hip hop haters like Jack D and Rolling Stone Has lost it’s way: get out of your 80sof “whatever doesn’t sound like G’N'R is dumb” mentality. how can you expect to have your opinion on popula music taken seriously when it’s based entirely on bias, generalizations and ignorance?

oh yeah. Nas the King is back, where the crown at?

Jack D | 12/6/2006, 1:32 pm EST

It’s a fact that rapping in itself requires no musical ability at all.

dan | 12/6/2006, 2:22 pm EST

great song, definitly something different, beat is completely original.

dan | 12/6/2006, 2:33 pm EST

and to Jack D down there, why did you open up this page man? so you could just diss hip hop music..nothing better to do..isnt there a metallica form you should be on..im 20 now, and a few years ago I was just like you. I thought rap was crap. But thats just ignorant and stupid, you probably dont know anything about hip hop. So why dont you check out “New York State of Mind” or “It ain’t hard to tell” from NaS’s Classic Illmatic album. Then tell me rapping doesnt take skill

2pox | 12/6/2006, 3:52 pm EST

well, hip hop as we know it, is dead. You can blame lil jon, and 50 cent for that. It’s not progressing anymore. It’s actually regressing. And honestly, the best thing about any of the “music” in hip hops beats are, and always have been samples from other, more talented artists like George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Miles Davis, Isaac Hayes, etc…..On the other hand, the really great thing about hip hop is the flow and lyrics, and if they’re not saying anything, why listen? Nas has definately been on top of the list among Pac, Biggie, and even Outkast, for having something to say and sounding good while doing it. Sure this new Nas song is a little different. It’s still the same hip hop structure, and even though this whole blues thing may sound new, it’s what Outkast has been working on for the past decade and even their last album felt uninspired. So anyways, all you folks praising hip hop just cause it’s hip hop sound hollow. How can you be moved by something that has become a mass market for the media. Hell, they are even telling you in the majority of their songs that they are only in it for the money. Go find other artists trying to push the boundaries of music with a passion for it, not trying to freshen up a tired old formula that started 20 years ago.

wanksters

All Eyez On Me | 3/27/2007, 11:46 am EST

Wtf are you talking about? I agree that Nas had always something to say through his lyrics and music. But please don’t compare him to Pac. Tupac was and IS the best, he inspired millions, as well as many rappers like Nas.
