You voted, we tabulated (it’s slow work with an abacus). The tallies are in and Pearl Jam takes the title of Best American Band of ‘06 by a wide margin. In second place we have Red Hot Chili Peppers. My Morning Jacket comes in at numero treis. Tied for fourth (and demonstrating the weird and wonderful variety of tastes y’all have) are the Strokes and Tool. Rounding out the mix at number five: TV on the Radio. Impressive! The final step of this little project is the one in which we ask you to submit your votes for awesomest Pearl Jam song so that we might give you a present in the form of a Best of PJ mixtape for your listening pleasure. Thanks for playing!

I think it says a lot about the state of American rock that a 15 year old band got “best band” and no one has suggested a song that’s newer than 10 years old to rep them.
Y’all need to get with the now, man. Even everyone here knows that Pearl Jam hasn’t done anything good in a decade.
Mark | 12/4/2006, 3:48 pm EST
Any list that doesn’t count The Black Crowes as the best band every year for 1990-2001 and 2005-2006 is a bunch of BS I tell ya!

“Awesomest” song off the self-titled album: “Severed Hand”
“Awesomest” song spanning their entire career: “Porch”
And to the people saying that Pearl Jam and Red Hot Chili Peppers haven’t been relevent for 10 years…how exactly would you define “relevent?” If relevance is equal to Top 40 success, your idea of relevence is a sad and misguided one. They have been (and still are) making great music for the past 15 and 20+ years, respectively.
Also, although I am a big Red Hot Chili Peppers fan, “Stadium Arcadium” doesn’t quite equal “Pearl Jam.” Both have very good musicianship and melodies, but Anthony Kiedis’s lyrics pale in comparison to Vedder’s (and the other contributing band members on the album). With better lyrics and a little editing, Stadium Arcadium would be a near-masterpiece, but as it is, not quite.

THANK GOD Nickelback didn’t win…now that is HORRIBLE music!
Pearl Jam has a HUGE fanbase and I’m glad to be a part of it!
Glad they also won too. FINALLY! Most underrated band around. People tend to forget that they put other albums out AFTER Vitalogy. This band makes music on THEIR own terms and not anyone elses. That is why they have such a huge fanbase.
Their self-titled took me a while to get into it, and absolutely LOVE it! I also love RHCP “Stadium Aracadium” as well.

Pearl Jam lives on with their (well deserved) legacy, but I don’t believe they should be crowned “band of the year”. This only shows the majority of those who read and participate in Rolling Stone are Pearl Jam fans, which isn’t very well deserved. I enjoyed the new album. It was a good step backwards to their roots, which is something very few bands can capture with success. There is much more to take into consideration though. Many other brilliant albums were released in 2006 (some of which received unnecessarily poor reviews on this here magazine.).
Damn it Rolling Stone, back in the day you were the poster child of a changing generation and a well respected music magazine. Now about a third of the reviews you put out are worth shit. I can only theorize the pure reason of the decline in record sales. So much of the music that is released right now is simple product placement and cleavage. What we, the consumers, are receiving is a collection of rappers rapping about themselves and rockers complaining about their lives with some tits and ass to keep our eyes dancing and our ears closed. There is little heart and pure passion left in…what I guess you could call pop culture. iTunes has helped as well. Now that we have the means to download a single song for a dollar, there is no reason to buy a full album of filler for one or two tracks. If mainstream bands were making great complete albums, then this wouldn’t be a problem.
All I’m saying is Pearl Jam had a good album, but not a spectacular year. I find it unfortunate that RS has the voice and ability to skyrocket careers of many artists that deserve their songs to be played and remembered decades from now, but instead we get “the guy who won American Idol this season” on the front cover. (you see what I mean, I can’t even remember their names now) I take everything I read here with a grain of salt, because I know there is more to be realized outside of the pages of RS. I wish you critics would get your shit together, and criticize yourself and what you are doing to this art we all love.

I really like Pearl Jam but mainly because of their older material.
I can’t really listen to their newest album, though I tried a couple of times.
Rolling Stone magazine really praised it and said it was their best album ever, and that they’re more mature, etc., but it was just a great disappointment for me.
I think Vs. and Ten were their best albums and I like a couple of other songs from other albums but those were the two albums I could just listen to all the way through.

Seriously, I like Pearl Jam….but people really need to get over them. They’re really not THAT good.
No Hold Steady?
No Drive-by Truckers?
Better way of putting it-no f*cking new bands? You guys sound like a bunch of new school baby-boomers, instead of the 60s/70s being the only time music was good, now its the 90s. I love PJ and RHCP but come on, there are plenty of new bands that put out bettter albums this year. I bet you all love Nickelback too.

Anything off the new album, since Pearl Jam is the best band of 2006 and their self titled album is the best album of 2006.
Amazing feat for a band that has been around for over 15 years !!!
They are as relevant to American Rock as ever. And they haven’t had to sell themselves out or compromise their integrity one bit.
Pearl Jam’s entire catalog is incredible and they are not only one of the greatest American Rock Bands ever…But one of the Greatest Rock and Roll bands perriod.

What? Pearl Jam keeps getting better and better. The RHCP have put out 3 albums in a row that sound EXACTLY alike (4 if you count SA as 2 albums).
Pearl Jam wins in songwriting, creativity, live concerts, and just about everything else. The only thing the Chilis lead in are Top 40 Hits and songs about California. I get it…you’re from California, anything else to say?

Wow!!!! I’m so proud of PJ – Been my favorite band for many, many years and it seems I’m not alone at all; Great to see this widespread respect for one of the only bands left who’s music is life altering. Seeing Pearl Jam is a religious, uplifting experience that everyone see at least once in their life (sort of like traveling to Mecca if you’re a Muslim!!)

whatever needs to be done to make you idiots get over My Morning Jacket I am willing and able to do.

People that say PJ hasn’t been relevant in the last 10 years should really borrow their last 4 or 5 albums and sit down, listen to the music and lyrics, then form an opinion.
TooMuchBlood | 12/5/2006, 4:53 pm EST
Off the top of my head, my fave 25 songs from the greatest band — really, defining what a band means in every way — ever to record and perform (note that four songs come from the new record, meaning that they’re still breaking ground):
Black
Corduroy
W MA
Given to Fly
In My Tree
World Wide Suicide
Do the Evolution
Whipping
Come Back
Animal
Hail, Hail
Present Tense
Love Boat Captain
Jeremy
In Hiding

Rock on My Morning Jacket. Why must people bad mouth bands all the time? Just cause ‘your band’ didnt win doesnt mean the one ahead of them is shit. Its a fucking poll. Its good to see someone not so widley known such as My Morning Jacket to appear below national headlining acts like PJ and RHCP. MMJ are the most versatile and energetic and talented acts out there right now. I enjoy all of the bands that made it, and whoever thinks the last 3 Chili albums sound the same is crazy. With the exception of Stadium Arcadium, not my favorite, but By the Way and Californication are musical masterpieces.
World's Biggest Rock Fan | 12/5/2006, 4:59 pm EST
I think they have atleast 100 songs that are a true masterpiece. I’ll choose Do The Evolution since I just heard it on the radio!
LoveEdVed | 12/5/2006, 6:00 pm EST
When people say cliche things about songs changing your life . . . I smile because “Black” absolutley changed mine.
Brian | 12/5/2006, 6:07 pm EST
I’ll just recommend a couple (even though I love the entire discography).
New Jam: Parachutes
Classic Jam: State of Love and Trust
Matt | 12/5/2006, 6:12 pm EST
“Clapton is god”, you are probably going to have to kill me. My Morning Jacket, along with TV on the Radio, is one of the most innovative bands out there right now. And no other band has as much passion for live performance as they do right now. It is your comment that is idiotic, not the My Morning Jacket fans.

Can’t believe st. robinson is comparing pearl jam with nickelback. If you think they are the same type of band you have no clue about music. (It is like comparing Radiohead to coldplay but worse.)

The Raconteurs should have put their cd as a totaly live cd, and no band of 06 would be able to touch it.

I don’t really care for Pearl Jam, although I respect them. “Stadium Arcadium” is unbearably boring. My Morning Jacket is great, but what did they do this year? The Strokes made an unbelievably disappointing and commercially fledgling release this year. Tool’s only pretty good.
That leads me to TV On the Radio, who are the REAL best band of the year. I love “Desperate Youth, Bloodthirsty Babes”, but “Cookie Mountain” improves on it in every way. It’s a brilliant, complex album, and I really admired RS for rating it so high when it was released. “Wolf Like Me” is the most thrilling song of the year, too.
Other artists to consider:
The Hold Steady
Sunset Rubdown
Clipse

What did My Morning Jacket do this year? It seems, judging by this poll, they have probably at least doubled their fanbase this year, opening for Pearl Jam and their own headlining tour. They had a huge show at Bonnaroo and were at every other major festival. They also released probably the best live album of the decade, as well as the best Concert DVD of the decade. I’d say it was a big year. Jason, I agree with TV on the Radio. They would come in #2 in my book. I thought the entire top five were good picks, but RHCP would be at the bottom of those, because Stadium Arcadium just wasn’t that great.

I think it says a lot about the state of American rock that a 15 year old band got “best band” and no one has suggested a song that’s newer than 10 years old to rep them.
Y’all need to get with the now, man. Even everyone here knows that Pearl Jam hasn’t done anything good in a decade.
IDIOTIC WORDS FROM AN OBVIOUS IDIOT!!!

AWESOME! It’s about time Pearl Jam got the recongnition they so deserve. They are the only band that is able to take me on an emotional rollercoaster ride through my soul just from hearing Ed’s emotional stories. this is one band that everyone must see live. The fan participation is incredible during live shows.
