If River Phoenix had lived, what state would his career be in today? Would he have blossomed into an A-list Hollywood star like Brad Pitt or Johnny Depp? Or would he be reduced to hot Grey’s Anatomy doctorhood, or, worse, starring opposite Charlie Sheen on Two And A Half Men like Jon Cryer?

Ah, Rive Phoenix. I cried the day he died… Of course, I was still in elementary school… But still. I don’t know if he’d be an icon today. I don’t think he was just a fad. But I wouldn’t know if he’d be an icon. I’d still drool over him, though…

Oh I get it.
Neds Fat Sister | 12/1/2006, 11:48 am EST
What if JFK lived? River who?
chris | 12/1/2006, 12:00 pm EST
he’d be bigger than jesus. river was one of the most talented young actors ever. I mean STAND BY ME, he saved that movie from cheese. I think he would have followed Sean Penn’s path. He may not have been a huge box office draw, but he’d be making great movies.
Santa Claus | 12/1/2006, 12:02 pm EST
My guess, he definately would’ve been a shoe in for Eric Stolz’s role in Pulp Fiction.
Sanchez | 12/1/2006, 12:04 pm EST
He Wrote Stand by Me? Holy Shit.
Anonymous | 12/1/2006, 12:28 pm EST
he would have been awesome in Titanic
Rich | 12/1/2006, 12:35 pm EST
Everyone has to be James Dean, and River Phoenix was no exception. Would he still be relevant if he lived? Who knows? But if he did, he’d have gone further if he had discovered his own style.
Shanin | 12/1/2006, 1:36 pm EST
River, today would be stuck in obscure roles that most people would’nt get. He was “Brokeback” before Jake/Heath “My Own Private Idaho” great movie, Keanu & Flea.
Narcolepsy & homosexuality, definatly not mainstream America. More groundbreaking yet doomed to cult status.
charliemapleton | 12/1/2006, 2:02 pm EST
He would’ve been more phenomenal and enigmatic than before he died. There was sheer, budding talent behind that dark aura.
Chubbier than Ezra | 12/1/2006, 2:11 pm EST
My Guess: He would have an apron on this minute, smiling…Maybe even have a gravy boat or a milkshake in his hand acting as Ron Popeil’s left arm hawking pasta makers, knives, salsa machines and the like.
And I’m not trying to be harsh….I’m not talking just the shopping network-they would’ve already expanded-Him and plastic *uncle* Ron would be on the Fox sports channels before 8am, maybe even after SNL.

What if Elizabeth Goodman had never been hired by Rolling Stone. We all have dreams…
Mandela | 12/1/2006, 3:25 pm EST
honestly river would’ve either had parellel careers lines with one of two men. either he’d keep on doing roles he wanted to do and eventually find his way into the mainstream with a handfull of cross over roles that are still challenging, like Depp has done, or he’d be the equivalent of Stephen Dorf, a man with potential to be a Hollywood ace if he had only lucked into some better roles, because honestly, Stephen still maintains the indie heart throb who has really blown up they way could’ve by now. Or maybe River wouldve sneered as his brother as his brother got bigger than himself and wouldve turned into his generatiosn Micky Rourke, except trade boxing for music. Honestly Rourke is one of only a hand ful of people who were called the next Brando who couldve actually fit those shoes. I think River couldve, too.

I find it uncomfortable to talk about “What If” situations involving dead people. James Dean, Kurt Cobain, JFK and River Phoenix are no exceptions. I think he would’ve done well in the role he was slated for in “Interview With The Vampire”. Maybe we would’ve had a Paul Newman effect with him. Paul Newman, actually got the roles James Dean was going to star in that helped make Newman a star. Maybe if River had lived we wouldn’t have to live with watching still baby-faced Leonardo DiCaprio, but that’s wishful thinking.

Eh, whattya think – He woulda been in a million crappy movies, sucked a billion cocks, and made a shitload of money. River Pheonix – Who fucking cares?
And why do we always have to look at that picture of that stupid girl?
Jim | 12/1/2006, 7:32 pm EST
Stupid, cynical Access Hollywood, ET mentality to even ask such a stupid question.
Jason | 12/2/2006, 3:56 am EST
This is a GREAT poll, because I think about the same thing every time I see Joaquin Phoenix “act.” River was leagues better than his younger brother, and I imagine that most of the roles Joaquin has attempted would have gone to River. Remember him at the beginning of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (playing Young Indy)? He was aces!
Bernie | 12/2/2006, 5:53 am EST
Straight to DVD action films and late night soft porn on Cinemax. And he’d still get an oscar.
midevil | 12/2/2006, 8:09 am EST
Yeah, we wouldn’t have had to put up with Leonardo Di-whatever.
justin | 12/2/2006, 10:49 am EST
he would of been banging janice dickinwhatever on the surreal life
musicJUNKIE | 12/2/2006, 7:59 pm EST
anthony kiedis would have had one less traumatic event in his life
DL | 12/2/2006, 8:01 pm EST
He was such a talent who knows what could have been.
Melanie | 12/3/2006, 10:15 am EST
I think River would have followed his own path, choosing movies that actually mean something to him, like Johnny Depp has done, without all the media hype and hoopla because he didn’t seem to care for it before he died. He was such a great actor and a great loss to movies.
Ron | 12/3/2006, 1:58 pm EST
I was just thinking about River for a different reason.
He was a militant vegan and there were a lot of stories of how he had chefs and costume designers fired for using animal-based products.
That’s cool and all, but I could never understand vegans who take drugs (legal or illegal) or smoke. It just seems really hypocritical to me. Animal byproducts and hormones are in most drugs.

Diva | 12/3/2006, 8:43 pm EST
Isn’t the girl in the photo one of the chicks from Heathers?
Tg | 12/3/2006, 11:31 pm EST
I still think of River from time to time. Such a sad and horrible loss. He had such talent. I think he’d still be one of our finest actors working in film today. He’d probably be directing Joaquin too. I’m sure River is really proud of his brother’s work. River will never be forgotten.
DGG | 12/4/2006, 5:51 am EST
Grey’s anatomy isn’t the worst case scenario… He Might be selling homemade porn from a website, like fellow drug fiend Tom Sizemore.
Kliffee | 12/5/2006, 4:54 pm EST
God that’s a hot pic of River.
I had the pleasure of meeting River and seeing his band, ‘Aleka’s Attic’ perform at ‘Wetlands’ in NYC about 15yrs ago. He was totally down to earth and a regular guy. A sad loss.
He would probably be acting in Indie films and doing mostly music.
Jack | 12/5/2006, 5:46 pm EST
I think he would be one of the most respected actors in Hollywood today. His work was always head and shoulders above most of his peers. He didn’t do projects for the money when he was alive anyway. I think he would have only done projects that made a significant impact, both to the craft of acting, and to the depth of American Cinema.
Danny | 12/6/2006, 4:01 pm EST
He would be doing GAY PORN I heard he had a nine incher!
Loneshewolf | 12/6/2006, 5:09 pm EST
I’m sure he would be a free spirit, and an outstandin actor, true to himself, always going his own way. I really miss him
