Offspring the Fifth Best Punk Band Ever?

11/30/06, 12:07 pm EST

Iggy PopWe’re not as wound up by Kerrang!’s list of the 50 Greatest Punk Albums (full list after the jump) as we were by Q’s Best Twenty Songs In Twenty Years list from yesterday. But perhaps that’s because we’re simply out of ire. We spent it all. Used it up fuming about missing R.E.M. and Weezer songs and the inescapable omnipresence of Robbie Williams.

Kerrang!’s take on the fifty best punk albums, is however kinda off. We’re missing some incredibly influential punk rock bands here (Hüsker Dü, The Germs, Sleater-Kinney, X-Ray Spex, The Subhumans and about 894 more), pluswhich they’ve included some utter shit (Blink-182, the Offspring,) and they got the hierarchy all wrong on the records they did select (Green Day up top with Bad Brains; The Clash, The Stooges, and um, everybody else besides the Sex Pistols trailing?) Also: Why the fuck isn’t X on this list!? Okay the ire’s back.

What would you do with this list?

What?? | 6/18/2009, 3:14 pm EST

Offspring arn’t punk, Greenday are shit, Nirvana are grunge this list is redicularse

Noel | 6/17/2009, 4:56 am EST

I agree that Americana shouldn’t be there, but calling The Offspring utter shit is just stupid. I know who I’d call utter shit.

ATTN W! | 6/14/2009, 10:20 pm EST

you are absolutely retarded. that was the most retarded thing anyone has said in the history of earth, period. take in to account i have heard some pretty stupid things before. for example i have heard many speeches by george dubya. (fool me twice can’t get fooled again).
then theres always the miss teen south carolina (like such as the iraq and like such as the africa)
what you said was much more retarded then that even.

is all i am going to say is listen to armageddion time, then listen to brain eaters, then tell me who the better band is

tdot37 | 5/17/2009, 4:35 am EST

In my view i have to agree that the clash are the best punk band ever, but this does not mean the only good group, other amzing punk groups are dead kennedys, black flag, the stooges, stiff little fingers, richard hell and the voovoids and soo many more..

frog | 5/12/2009, 7:25 pm EST

Ide have Marky,Tommy and CJ Ramone flush this list down the toilet

giacomo | 4/22/2009, 8:06 am EST

why everybody has to say “get out blink 182″?!!?!?!?!?
they are one of the most influential band of the latest 20 years, a lots of bands is now famous thanks only to blink 182 and their music.
they aren’t completely punk but their melodic punk is a way to get into the real punk…they completely rules!!!!

w | 4/22/2009, 3:13 am EST

To the guy who said the clash are the best punk bend ever….That’s the same sort of retarded, misguided, bullshit that any big magazine buys into. The clash fucking sucked. Period. Numerous punk bands were better than the clash (Misfits, Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, The Stooges, etc.).

mike | 3/6/2009, 6:12 pm EST

Strung Out

the comment that matters | 2/8/2009, 4:15 am EST

oops my bad, did read that it wasnt rollingstone’s list..its Kerrengs…eh both magazines are great…

The only comment that matters | 2/8/2009, 4:11 am EST

rolling stone is retarded…they used to say that nirvana would never get anywhere and gave Nevermind 3/5 stars but now rank them so high in every list. that’s pretty much the punk equivalent of selling out. so what the hell do they know about punk? nirvana wasnt even a punk band…they were grunge..hard to dispute that…green day wrote songs about masterbating and not sleeping-NOT PUNK! the offspring/blink 182/sum 41 etc are all pop punk. a self contradiction once you think about it (Punk-rebel against the norms Pop-the norms…)the clash was the best punk band EVER no question about it. noteable mentions-sex pistols, ramones, dead kennedys. but it is my belief that punk died after the clash broke up(as the clash say in one of their songs-

“Punk rockers in the UK
They won’t notice anyway
They’re all too busy fighting
For a good place under the lighting

The new groups are not concerned
With what there is to be learned
They got Burton suits, ha you think it’s funny?
Turning rebellion into money”

C0dY !x | 1/25/2009, 2:06 pm EST

ay guess wat???? clay aiken’s more punk than the $#!T we got now! lol
Let’s see we got:
-Fall Out Boy (WOW! They’re really punk w/ dem gay-ass haircuts n’ clothes)

-My Chemical Romance …(u guys suck!! U ain’t the Misfits!)

-Panic at the Disco (WOW! That sounds like fun? Rite kids?!)

-Taking Back Sunday (Dat $#!T aint punk, listen 2 the fuckin’ MC5 or DxRxIx or )

-blink-182 (i like the fact that they were runnin’ around naked in that video i can’t name… but they’re TOOO DAMMMN WINY 2 B PUNK!!
GOT DAT KIDZ!!)

-And let’s not forget the New Found Glory…if they’re guitarist chad gilbert was really punk like he says he is, Then y is he playin’ wit that that winy mutha fucka?!

Well I’m closin this comment by sayin’ if u wanna play tough music punk is dead… u might as well play metalcore like Hatebreed or Machinehead. Punk was the music that had more attitude than any other kind of music…but (sob) it died…

disisravalistisexpaoonidis | 12/19/2008, 9:11 pm EST

I mean Bollocks,

disisravalistisexpaoonidis | 12/19/2008, 9:09 pm EST

I Would put Nevermind at number 2 but I can at least agree that Nevermind the Bollocks could possibly be near the top. It depends on what criteria they are using to create the list in the first place. I’d like to see Iggy Pop near the top as well. He was there right at the beginning and I think he was a really big influence on what became “Punk”.

disisravalistisexpaoonidis | 12/19/2008, 9:07 pm EST

punkisstillalive | 11/25/2008, 2:22 pm EST

what is wrong with you!!! it is just a stupid list… so green day’s on there. They sold more albums than any of the punk bands in the history so just fuck off. yeah i agree that some great bands are missing like x generation and stuff but blink 182 and offspring aren’t so bad. maybe they are not one of the biggest punk bands but we all know that, i mean come on this is just a fucking list. And I definitely don’t think that anything after Ramones should be on ’cause there are still great musicans out there after all this is just about good music and drugs.

E Hendrix | 10/27/2008, 11:08 am EST

Bikini Kill – The Singles - As with a lot of bands, you can’t compare their singles to their albums.
The Bronx – Self Titled (White Drugs label) - One of the best “four take” albums I’ve ever heard
Chelsea – Punk Singles Collection 77-82 - Yeah, I know this is where Billy Idol came from and we’re better off for it ;)
Dead Boys – Young, Loud, and Snotty - How can you forget Stiv?!?
Fear – The Record - You can’t acknowledge an entire scene just by putting Black Flag on the list.
Gang of Four – Entertainment! - If you can put the Buzzcocks, you can put Gang of Four
Glassjaw – Worship and Tribute - Ok, maybe not top 50, but it’s a damned good album
The Kids – Self Titled
The Living End – Self Titled - Here’s a good example of why Green Day is on the list… If it wasn’t for Green Day this band wouldn’t have reached US attention.
Mission of Burma – Signals, Calls and Marches
New Bomb Turks – Pissing Out the Poison - Another singles collection. I have a ton of these on vinyl and their albums couldn’t match up to the amazing variety of sounds from their singles.
Rich Kids – Ghosts of Princes in Towers
The Saints – (I’m) Stranded
Screeching Weasel – Boogadaboogadaboogada - If you can put Green Day… okay, well, this is a fun punk album…
Snapcase – Designs for Automotion - Another one maybe not top 50, but a damned good album.
Stiffs, Inc. – Nix Nought Nothing - honorable mention for me… not 100% original, but I miss this band especially from this album.
Television – Marquee Moon - Isn’t this punk? How can we miss them on a list?
X – Los Angeles - Kind of like Fear, how can you not include the other pivotal members of the original LA punk scene?

E Hendrix | 10/27/2008, 11:06 am EST

Sorry, my comment got truncated…

Now, some of the things I would have added to the list (feel free to call me an idiot, but it’s an opinion much like a mediocre 50 album list from Kerrang). Some of them might be more “honorable mentions”.
• Alkaline Trio – Goddamnit!

E Hendrix | 10/27/2008, 11:04 am EST

I’m not thrilled with many of the omissions from this list and I think a lot of the bands are higher then they deserve. Kerrang, it looks like, was trying to stay balanced between old and new punk… 25 pre-1990 and 25 post-1990 (kind of unfair to a longer period of time from proto-punk through post-punk in the 60’s – 80’s). More modern bands (90’s and new millennia) should not be on the list at all unless they A) were innovators (created a new sub-genre for example) or B) were pivotal in bringing punk back to the masses (whether for good or ill). Those that were pivotal in bringing punk back to the attention of the masses should not be high on the list, however, unless they were also innovators. Make sense? So, keeping that in mind, bands like Rancid, Offspring, Green Day, and especially Blink 182 should not be in the top 30. Should a band like Offspring be on twice, especially including Americana, no way. If they had listed Ignition and Smash I would have been a little more “ok” with the thought. NOFX making it on the list twice, again, I don’t think that’s a good move. Another band that confuses me on the list is Sublime… I have to give them credit for infusing so many styles into their music which made a lot of people from the time branch off into styles they would have considered (both listeners and other bands from the time branching out), but those bands branched more AWAY from punk. Good band, influential band, but not necessarily a “punk” band in my mind. Now, some compliments to the list…. Including the Buzzcocks, Refused, and the Undertones made me happy. Refused was a very very underrated band and they broke up too soon in my eyes. If you haven’t listened to the Shape of Punk to Come, go buy it and you will really hear the innovations to the scene. I’m also really surprised and pleased they included Rocket From the Crypt from San Diego… Another innovator in my mind. Brining punk energy into a garage infused sound may have been done before, but not as well as them (may they rest in peace). One final comment on bands on the list… Nirvana…. Honestly, I’ve been a fan for a lot of years and their “punkness” was lost on me in the 90’s when everything was labeled “grunge” or “alternative”, but I totally recognize it now. I remember reading in an old Rip magazine in high school that Kurt didn’t know what “punk” sounded like per-se when he started playing music. He read a lot of magazines about punk and ended up making music he thought punk would sound like. He felt drawn to the world he read about in the magazines. Love them, hate them, but they were punk… Maybe not “In Utero”, but everything else was… Take a listen to “Incesticide”, “Bleach”, and any live bootlegs you can track down and you might get it (there are some amazing soundboard boots out there which have recently re-ignited my passion for ‘ol Nirvana). Also, ignore Butch Vig’s production on Nevermind… I love the job he did, but I just say ignore and feel the music beneath… punk! Just to reinforce this point, a lot of bands from the 60’s which were just considered rock before are now considered garage-punk or proto-punk. All of the elements of punk were there, but they were released before the term “punk” was coined, so they were not referred to as punk sooner.

Now, some of the things I would have added to the list (feel free to call me an idiot, but it’s an opinion much like a mediocre 50 album list from Kerrang). Some of them might be more “honorable mentions”.
• Alkaline Trio – Goddamnit!

Douche | 10/26/2008, 3:27 am EST

The Germs? Where are the Germs? Ridiculous, why did I read this list?

Too Fat For Porn | 10/9/2008, 5:41 pm EST

All you people need to chill the fuck out! i grew up listening to bands such as Green Day, the Offspring and blink 182. and they helped me to move onto bands like Rancid, NOFX, AFI, The Descendents, Stiff Little Fingers etc…

the point is those bands you so easily shit on have alot for punk/ punk rock music. They open the doors to young kids who would never have heard of most of the bands from the 80’s and before. wether you like them or not, they deserve credit. So fuck all the haters!
I see people on here saying “thats not punk”… what the fuck would you know? so because they have been successfull and have more money than you they are shit? did you create this genre of music? or are you just some old person who watched all their dreams go up in smoke when they reralised they were a talennless fuck? i’ll go with the latter…. it’s music, not a cure for cancer. get a fucking life!

Evan | 9/4/2008, 4:52 pm EST

I think selling out is mistaken for making a living. You think anybody that has had it tough at some point int heir life doesn’t want to make money? Tim from Rancid was homeless at one point. Tim wanted his band to succeed as much as any other band wanted to succeed. Just because they sell records and run businesses doesn’t mean they are sellouts. Rancid is making the music they want not what the labels tell them too and I believe every punk band puts their heart and soul into every lyric of every song. These people are making a living, they have to survive and if that means running a business then so be it. Punk is about your attitude in life not the clothes you wear. Tim and the rest of Rancid are punks at heart same with other bands such as The Casualties and others. The music industry is a business and any band that sells records is part of the business in a capitalist society. By that logic every band that ever existed is a sell out and that isn’t true. Rancid is doing what they want because they love music and they embody punk by doing it their way. This doesn’t just go for Rancid but every other band accused of selling out. Just remember, The Sex Pistols were on Guitar Hero Three and it not only wasn’t a cover, they re-recorded Anarchy in the U.K. for it. Music is a business as it will always be, everybody tries to make a living; in the end everybody wants security and bands find their security by gaining happiness from their music and the cash flow that comes with it. No band sells out, they may change styles and experiment, but no band sells out.

sluttywhore | 8/27/2008, 6:56 pm EST

and whoever mentioned the casualties is an idiot.
they sold out.
so did rancid.

posers.

green day and blink 182 can kiss my ass.

anyone currently on mtv should just go to hell. along with mtv.

and actually i agree with the person who said the anarchy shit was stupid.
it is.
crust has a way better meaning to it.

sluttywhore | 8/27/2008, 6:53 pm EST

HAHAHAHAHA

this list is shit.
where the fuck are the germs.
where the fuck is leftover crack.
where the fuck is anything good?

why even have a list of punk bands. its stupid.

fuck that list
and fuck everyone argueing about it.

crust punk is taking over now anyways.
go listen to some dystopia and kill yourselves.

Chris Wheelie | 8/27/2008, 2:33 pm EST

Oh, and just as a spiteful (but justified) footnote to the below: Rancid?? RANCID??!!!
Any band who has members who run labels who declare ‘artistic ownership’ of bands such as Crass, merely to create a monopoly on internet t-shirt sales deserves to be drummed-out of punk entirely. As Jerry A (from rightly included Portland punks Poison Idea) said (of Rancid) “they HAD good songs… But they’re capitalist businessmen… F**k you”.

Chris Wheelie | 8/27/2008, 2:20 pm EST

I enjoy things like this, so many folk get so darned heated (as has already been remarked upon). I love the comments about how REAL punk bands wouldn’t want to be on such a list, or questioning what was with all the big label majority… Being a fan of chaos, I ain’t gonna compile no stinking list, yet can’t resist putting in my 2 cents worth.
Yes, Subhumans and X-Ray Spex were wrongly omitted (as admitted by the opening editorial) as were ‘bigger names’ such as Poison Girls, Flux of Pink Indians, Rudimentary Peni, Oi Polloi, Peter and the Test Tube Babies, Angry Samoans… Good to see Dead Kennedys so high, Killing Joke (deservedly higher), Stiff Little Fingers and wrong album for The Exploited (Troops of Tomorrow, surely?), but what of The Restarts, Fleas and Lice, The Orphans, The VDs, The Tits, Naked Aggression, Active Minds, Dog on a Rope, Half Man Half Biscuit, Cardiacs, Denada, Terminus, Cowboy Killers, Snuff, Pink Turds in Space… Exactly. It’s just sumfin’ you can’t do. However, it goes without saying that the non-vinyl/non-CD, demo tape only release by (UK) band The Filth should be number 1. If those fellas had signed to Nitro/Sony/ EMI/etc you’d know who I was on about and would object to their inclusion. And rightly so. Punk is punk. Not pop. Fun to read though.

Mike S | 8/18/2008, 12:18 pm EST

Hey don’t call the Offspring utter shit! They’re not purely punk, it’s alternative - skate punk but it doesn’t make them shit. Americana wasn’t the best album ever and doesn’t really deserve the 20th place but Offspring, their first self-titled album, and Ignition were really great and as well as Smash! I know that Conspiracy of One and Splinter were pretty shitty but Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace is a big comeback, much, much better than their previous 2 albums.
Green Day is utter crap and I don’t know what Dookie is doing on that 2nd place. Blink-182 should also get out of the list. Fast. And Sex Pistols don’t deserve the 1st place.

sk8dude | 7/3/2008, 7:16 pm EST

well said Old Guy

Into It | 6/17/2008, 1:41 am EST

Wat bout Rage Against The Machine

Joebob | 6/15/2008, 11:29 am EST

Tis list is missing the voidoids. the birthday party, the cure, sonic youtj, the velvets, dks, elvis costello and multitudes more.

bamfpunk | 6/9/2008, 12:57 am EST

Smash Was One Of The Greatest Albums Ever. I Do Agree That The Offspring Are Not Really Punk Anymore But Dont Hate On Them. They Brought Punk Into The Real World. And You Gotta Admit They Sound A Hell Of A Lot More Punk Than Green Day.

Old Guy | 5/25/2008, 10:23 pm EST

Look, the only list that should count for you all is your own. Music is that way, eh? None of us need to be fascists about this–saying you should have this or that on a list? Make up your own list and post it then, calm down, and listen to and buy what you like, and move the hell on. That’s what makes it great.

sk8dude | 5/11/2008, 7:28 pm EST

wow, almost everyone who commented on this needs to calm down.
if punks were all as up-tight as most of you, there would be no punk bands at all

Alberto Luévano | 4/26/2008, 9:38 pm EST

i think The Offspring is a pretty good band and that Smash was a great album, but Blink-182 and Green Day sure dont belong up there. i mean i could see how The Offspring, Dead Kennedys, and the Ramones got in there but the other choices are crap. not the best list ive seen.

bilsden | 4/19/2008, 4:00 am EST

This list is so cliche. iv seen this same list for the last 5 years. In my opinion a real punk band wouldn’t want to be on a list. I thought being in a punk band meant playing dive clubs, touring in a broken down van that smells like armpit and assholes, playing with shit equipment held together with duct tape. If you have to tell someone your a punk then your not a punk. If you have to tell people your in a real punk band, your not punk. Punk is alive and well. There are alot of great bands out there fighting for there seen. They dont care about genera’s or impressing record label’s. They just want to keep the doors open to the clubs who take the chance and let them play.

As far as the list gos. The Sex Pistols suck. they where a shock rock band. The clash had good songs not great albums, S.O.A. was better then Black Flag, Ian McKay is probably crying because Minor Threat got mentioned in rolling stone. Blink 182 use to play there asses off, where is 7 seconds, and the only band on this list i can stand to listen to the whole album is the Misfits.

This is just opinion tho, Music is what you make of it, and no one else can tell you what you like, but there are great bands out there that most people will never hear because of lists like this

GuyDudeMan | 4/18/2008, 10:13 pm EST

No, Smash probably doesn’t deserve to be number #5 on the list, but it makes me sad that people don’t appreciate them. Smash is one of the big albums that helped bring punk to the scene. They aren’t punk any more, not since CO1, but they should still be remembered.

Shawn | 4/10/2008, 11:11 pm EST

I cant believe the Sex Pistols topped this list! I’m not so worried about the Offspring, Blink 182, or Green Day, but how the Vampirates or Pennywise don’t even appear on the list blows my mind.

mrbinga | 3/26/2008, 11:03 pm EST

ok, this is the absolute worst list ever compiled on the history of punk.

i understand that the writers need to capture a wide range of years, and that things like offspring ect, should be considered punk.

but the get up kids? blink 182? really? that kills any bit of credibility for this list.

what are you basing this stuff on? static age was a great recording session, but not quite an album (although it is great)

the sex pistols as #1? really? do the so called professionals at rolling stone understand where the sex pistols fall in the history of punk rock?

this makes me absolutely sick, and you people should be ashamed of yourselves for giving the same weight of bands like blink 182 and anybody else for that matter.

cramps? velvet underground? MC5? sonics? richard hell & the voidoids? there is so much quality stuff that was completely ignored by this list.

for those of you coming to rolling stone to learn about punk rock, thing again. try to read leggs mcneil’s “please kill me: an oral history of punk rock”

fitz | 3/17/2008, 8:00 am EST

what about 59 times the pain! Also is good seeing blink there are they’re causing such controvosy ha ha! to be fair i’m not bothered!

Cpburrowes | 2/13/2008, 5:13 pm EST

I see many obscure bands that recorded some really incredibly good material but either didn’t have a label backing them or were only together for a brief period didn’t make this list. Seek out some obscure punk from the years and you’ll find some treasure amongst the crap. Some great albums did make this list though.
Do some net searches with names such as Sons Of Ishmael, Hickey, Raw Power (the band), New Bomb Turks, Jerry Jerry and the sons of rhythm orchestra, Chachi On acid, Pansy division, Diesel ann, My dog Popper, or The McNicknix to find some more obscure treasures. I know theres thousands of great punk albums, tapes, CDs, 7″s that are just waiting for someone willing to look for them.

notplainjayne | 1/29/2008, 7:58 pm EST

I’m seeing a lot missing, but I am not going to bite off the writer of this list’s head for having a different point of view…

Hank j | 1/26/2008, 9:29 pm EST

What about good ole Jawbreaker and Lifetime.

MC | 12/12/2007, 9:02 am EST

Epic rage = my bad spelling ^_^

MC | 12/12/2007, 8:56 am EST

First off, anyone with the name xtremepunkrocker should be slapped, regardless of gender. You play guitar, bass and drums? Who gives a shit?

And before you even start claiming The Offspring aren’t punk, how about reading up their histroy beofre you make false claims, you dolts. I bet alf the people who have commented on this have never even listened to their first 3 albums. Punk is ridiculous anyway. If it was how punks wanted it (i.e no government, anarchy, etc) then what? The country would fall into total chaos and thousands if not millions of lives would be lost. Yeh, like thats going to make a better world. Idiots.

Lame | 11/13/2007, 7:08 pm EST

Leftover Crack definately deserves to be up here.

xtremepunkrocker | 10/31/2007, 5:03 pm EST

i play guitar, bass AND drums.. i dunno what the fuck offspring are doing here but the motherfucking blink182s should fall under so called sissy punk not punk. greenday is punk. ramones are punk. im punk. my band is punk (thanks chris and william). and im a girl. a tomboy. in fact the only thing that distinguishes me from a boy is that i wax my legs and i dont have a dick. there. and i have periods, and wear a bra (jockey). thats it. geez. sAm | 7/15/2007, 11:35 pm EST

i think black flag and the ramones and the clash should be higher, and why is blink 182 even on there? im glad the offspring where on there, but they shouldnt be so near the top. and also, smash by the offspring is a great album….theyrr newer stuff isnt as punk, but smash and theyre older stuff…classic

What!? | 7/13/2007, 5:19 am EST

Ok,
Lets just go ahead and assume for a moment that Willhaven can actually be defined as a punk band (which is unfathomable to me). Of ALL of the albums by ALL of the bands in the history of punk rock how is it that that this band can find a place on the list. I can think of at least 10 bands that deserve to be on the list before that horrible excuse of a band should even get in the same BUILDING as this list.

Husker | 7/12/2007, 2:34 pm EST

Wow. Wow wow wow. Since when was the offspring punk? And blink-182? Pop. G’bye, punk. I’ll miss you.

Fuck you Green Day!

Ch33t0 | 7/6/2007, 10:21 pm EST

Greenday, Offspring & Blink 182 should be taken off any great punk band list. They are not even what punk is all about… unless you count what 10 year old kids that hang out at Hot Topic consider as punk.

Fuck where are the Adolescents? I love Green Days Dookie, but it does not deserve a spot on that list.

D-Generate | 1/30/2007, 1:56 pm EST

Holy Shite… Green Day and The Offspring ranked higher than The Clash and the Ramones???? I’m surprised you didn’t put the Go-Go’s and Billy Idol before Bad Brains and the Dead Kennedys…

You're a fucker | 12/26/2006, 9:25 am EST

Piss off!! Where the hell are the UK SUBS???

And what the hell are Greenday actually doing in it…

I would burn this list. It sucks.

wtf | 12/10/2006, 1:42 pm EST

Offspring’s Smash isn’t utter shit. You’re utter shit.

Waa | 12/2/2006, 11:55 pm EST

Ok, ok i didnt mean it. Its shit but you snuck enough decent punk in there to cover youre ass. My suggestion is to put youre life on hold, buy at least a sheet of acid then go to that sleazy looking record store on the corner of the street youre afraid to walk on, buy the entire punk section and learn a little something.

Where the fuck are the Dead Boys?
Or The UK Subs?
Or The Germs?
Or even Generation X if you’re gonna have the fucking Get Up Kids and AFI on there.
This list blows.

BenVACANCY! | 12/1/2006, 10:45 am EST

Do we REALLY need 2 Offspring/Green Day records on this list? How about the New York Dolls? or The Dead Boys?

Aaron | 11/30/2006, 11:32 pm EST

Wipe my ass with this worthless list

B.J. | 11/30/2006, 8:27 pm EST

Hooray for the S.P.O.T.S those old fatties deserve it.Ms. Goodman your opinions are good so ignore Adam….he is an a**hole.

Lobsters | 11/30/2006, 7:15 pm EST

The Replacements should be on there but it’s a British list so it could certainly be worse.
I’m seriously sick of this Green Day crap. Have you seen that video they made with U2 about Katrina? Fucking STUPID!

CGEffect | 11/30/2006, 4:03 pm EST

You scared me. It’s only ranking the better punk albums. A bad list anyway. Should Nirvana really count? Blink-182 and The Offspring on there made me laugh. Since The Clash experimented on many music genres I understand why they only have 2 albums there but Give ‘Em Enough Rope has to be on there. Green Day’s best albums were Insomniac and Kerplunk! so Dookie at #2 even as a Green Day fan was puzzling as well as putting Nimrod ahead of those 2 albums.

Kevin | 11/30/2006, 4:02 pm EST

It’s funny that RollingStone calls blink-182 “utter shit” when they gave each of their last 3 cd’s 4 star reviews.

Jeff | 11/30/2006, 3:09 pm EST

The Offspring are not utter shit.

Rrowr | 11/30/2006, 2:26 pm EST

I just realized that, besides Crass, there ain’t any women on this list at all. No Sleater-Kinney or Bikini Kill or the Need. What about the Ex?

This list is on some mainstream…

Rrowr | 11/30/2006, 2:21 pm EST

Seems like pretty much everything post-95 needs to be removed from the list. Not that some of ‘em aren’t good records, but they ain’t that good and some of ‘em ain’t even punk.

Green Day #2? Puh-leeese. That’s retarded. And, I’m sure, listening to Fun House would make Blink-182 cry in the corner…Iggy should be way higher and B-182 shouldn’t even be mentioned.

Where’s Gang of Four? Where’s Wire? X-Ray Spex? The Slits? The Buzzcocks? Television?

No wonder all new ‘punk’ sounds like Dookie (pun intended)…if this list actually reflects what kids think is punk than that goes a long way to explaining Good Charolette and Panic! at the Disco.

CURE GASTROPARESIS | 11/30/2006, 2:20 pm EST

offsprings- smash is a classic. u ever heard ‘come out 2 play’ or ‘pretty fly?’

Bones | 11/30/2006, 1:56 pm EST

Punk died when the Ramones got famous.

who are you? | 11/30/2006, 1:38 pm EST

Blink 182, Sublime, Offspring….punk rock? WTF ?

hey | 11/30/2006, 1:34 pm EST

Alkaline Trio - From Here To Infirmary should be on there somewhere

thereapist... | 11/30/2006, 1:32 pm EST

looks like it’s a list for those in the age bracket of 20-35…these are all the albums that were probably influencial to those making bands now.

you can pretty much tell they haven’t gone really back to the classics BUT instead focussed on the music of their era…so i find it a little wonky and not a true representation of the title.

what do you think??

theworldsforgottenboy | 11/30/2006, 1:31 pm EST

Dookie??? Enema of the State?? Give me a break…Nothing after 1985 should be on that list… it was all industry shit after that and emerging hip-hop was the new “punk ”

Where is the Radio Birdman? The Saints??

Also wrong Social D and Misfits records.

boihggr | 11/30/2006, 1:31 pm EST

What would I do with this list? I’d perforate it, put it on a roll in my bathroom, and then suggest that Kerrang get a Kerrlue as to what punk really is. The albums included are all great for what they are… but a lot of them aren’t really punk, are they?

asdf | 11/30/2006, 1:30 pm EST

Adam, maybe you should read the title of the page where it says “Rolling Stone Rock and Roll Daily > Blog Archive >…” Hey look at that it says blog. Oh shit I might see some opinions.

Sanchez | 11/30/2006, 1:29 pm EST

Well said Adam, well said.

Rolling Stone Job Posting -
Looking for someone to cut and paste other magazines thoughts on tunes.

This Magazine is not far from Empty.

Notable omission’s:

-Social D’s “Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell”
-Social D’s “Sex, Love and Rock n Roll”
-Fugazi “13 Songs”
-Fugazi “Steady Diet of Nothing”
-Minutemen “Double Nickels on a Dime”
-any Replacements

Adam | 11/30/2006, 12:49 pm EST

Elizabeth Goodman, how do you keep a job? Your utter incompetence is matched by your complete lack of taste in music. This list is for the best PUNK ALBUMS. While there are scores of bands that are not getting their due as artists, “Smash” and “Enema of the State” are great, solid albums front to back. As a rock journalist, your subjective taste should not override your knowledge of what makes good music good. If you’d like, you are more than welcome to make a personal list of your favorite albums in whatever category you’d like, but criticizing real critics is not worthy of a paycheck.

Fat Boy | 11/30/2006, 12:39 pm EST

Bump up the Buzzcocks…

Huh? | 11/30/2006, 12:16 pm EST

The Clash need to be higher!!! Greenday and blink 182 need to be removed. At the drive in’s relationship of command needs to go on here! Good call on the refused though.
