Warring Rap Factions Gather Troops for 2007 Charts Battle

Busta DJ Clue

Who knows what inspired seasoned rappers Busta Rhymes and DJ Clue to get back in the game after enjoying long gaps between releases, but they clearly learned the golden rule of the current rap game: Recruit all-star collaborators. Busta, who hadn’t released an album since 2002 when he put out The Big Bang earlier this year, apparently plans to release Before Hell Freezes Over — which will feature collaborations with Pharrell, Dr. Dre, and the late Jay Dilla — sometime next spring-ish.

Meanwhile DJ Clue hasn’t put out an offical album all his own since 2001, but on December 19th he’ll release The Professional, Part 3. Blink a couple of times cuz this list of collaborators is long: Kanye West (who apparently co-wrote the first single “Like This”), Fabolous, Snoop Dogg, Young Jeezy and Juelz Santana, Jadakiss, Swizz Beatz, Mike Jones and Paul Wall (who worked with Clue on the aptly titled “Grill & Woman”), and Fat Joe among others. Whew. That was exhausting.

As long as artists continue to insist on making albums for/with each other, thereby assuring that all contemporary rap records will sound virtually indistinguishable, let’s nominate some new blood in the collaboration game! Who would you like to see join forces? Does the perfect collaboration equation still produce innovative tunes?

Does anyone remember when hip-hop had something to say?

Another song about rims? All right!

hey | 11/29/2006, 2:11 pm EST

hey, hip hop doesnt just speak on rims okay? lets give some respect…they also talk about diamonds, bootys, killing, and money….jeez

Drunk and Obese | 11/29/2006, 2:17 pm EST

i want to see all rappers collaborate on sucking a big dick

smallybiggz | 11/29/2006, 2:21 pm EST

rap is useless as tits on a bull

tom wieler | 11/29/2006, 2:26 pm EST

i thought DJ Premier was do ALL of the production on the new Nas album, but i guess that was the plan BEFORE Nas signed on with Def Jam and the Jay-Z camp. So that would be one colaboration i’d like to see.
as i’ve mentioned on other R&R Daily posts, how about the surviving N.W.A members collaborating with each other?
(By the way, good on RS for their article on DJ Yella last month)

How about an Kool G. Rap and Freddie Foxxx and WC?

mikeky | 11/29/2006, 2:34 pm EST

a duet with jay-z and another one of his faces.

or maybe diddy and his ego.

neither of which i would buy or download for free.

however, if someone taped the both of them getting beat down like the pretentious bitches they are, i would buy that video. and pay for the download.

I agree with Aaron- if one more person comes out with a cd and they are sittin on 22s- please no more. I can’t bear it. Where are the De La Souls, the Nas’, the Talib Kwelis, et.al. With the exception of T.I. and the reemergence (not that he went anywhere) of Jay-Z noone out there is rapping about anything!

heavyhitter | 11/29/2006, 3:07 pm EST

Is this National Rap day? whats with all the rap infused aticles whom RS’s majority reader base couldn’t care two hoots about? I think the current RS staff all suck rapper cock.

charliemapleton | 11/29/2006, 4:39 pm EST

It’s good to hear another all-star album again, especially from Clue.Collabo albums are like a child’s chest with his/her/their favorite toys in them,so why not please the fans this time around?

Axgrinder | 11/29/2006, 4:50 pm EST

Yeah, rap sucks. When’s Limp Bizkit’s new album coming out?

Wow | 11/29/2006, 7:40 pm EST

I think this question only serves to highlight how Rolling Stone’s readership not only doesn’t care about rap, but also knows nothing about it at all. There’s a disproportionate number of idiotuc “rap sucks” posts from nerdy white internet junkies who get to say silly shit just because they’re affored an anonymous, electronic space to post bullshit opinions. This new message posting system is in danger of making Rolling Stone’s entire fanbase look like a bunch of fucking imbeciles. Case and point: “Yeah, rap sucks. When’s Limp Bizkit’s new album coming out? “

RON D.G | 11/29/2006, 9:29 pm EST

I’D LIKE TO SEE NAS & LAURYN HILL TAKE IT BACK

JD | 11/30/2006, 12:21 am EST

Where are the Run DMCs and Public Enemies, rappers that actually had something to say? All rap songs today are like Young somebody featuring Lil somebody. Is it a wonder most of today’s rap songs are indistinguishable from eachother?

Pixelasso | 11/30/2006, 12:50 am EST

Whoever cares what these new-money, cheap businessmen have to say? All they ’sing’ about is naked women and all they SHOW is naked women. Yeah right, according to some, being white is a crime in these forums. I say, being a modern rap artist is a BIGGER crime. Rap fans, please listen to this crap all you want – just don’t pretend (1) it is music, (2) we are supposed to like it and (3) you can listen to it without the x-rated videos.

Seriously, can you even mention hip hop in the same sentence as rock and roll? Rock had Pink Floyd, Beatles, Nirvana, U2, REM… What does rap have?

Yes, I did love Run DMC and still long for someone like them to return – but that doesn’t mean I have to like the other crap in order to be politically correct.

RollingStone, why don’t you rename yourself as “Snoop-the-Poop Chronicles”?

charliemapleton | 11/30/2006, 9:49 am EST

I’m in the mood for a flawlessly lyrical female rapper. We need more of those in the next 20 plus years.
C’mon sweethearts,where’s the flow at?

charliemapleton | 11/30/2006, 10:13 am EST

Or rather, where’s the flow BEEN?Besides Remy Ma and Shawnna,it wouldn’t hurt to have another queen bee(no pun intended) to rule the kingdom as well. There was once this girl outta Detroit who I believe was called Invincible.Heard she was really good by the way.Jean Grae’s pretty good too-I just heard her for the first time on launch.com and I wholeheartedly think all eyes need to be on her as well.

Jay Z…Kingdom come.? Please…Kingdom go back to the studio and get some good beats…that shit is weak…worst Jay album ever…Rap is on it’s way out in the next couple years…

Guaranteed.

Gong Show | 11/30/2006, 5:14 pm EST

Werd CP Rap is dead.

Gong Show | 11/30/2006, 5:17 pm EST

Jay..Kingdom Come…worst album to date. Days at the office and nights with wifey/girlfriends has gotten jay all soft…sounds like his life is more like the average businessman than the rap mogul he is…Mike Jordan of recordin….yeah like 4 yrs ago..Kingdom shoulda never come

charliemapleton | 12/2/2006, 12:22 pm EST

There was this one fine honey out of Canada named 24K,i’m waiting for her to come out,but hey,the opportunity for her to shine will come at hand.By the way,why should there be limits on just rap coming out of the east, west, and midwest?Let’s see some more fresh heads give 100% of their game and quality to hip hop and rap music-north coast,up north, let’s make it happen!Hip hop and rap’s supposed to be a universal movement,so why not continue to expand above and beyond?

Rap music currently sucks, even Jay Z included in the list. Where are the Fugees i really miss their music what a great politically and socially conscious group. I would also like to see Lauryn Hill and Nas together again. It is such a disgrace that these current rappers are puppets of the entertainment corporations what really happened after the Fugees? Only God knows
