Hip-hop producer/ rapper/mesh-hat-devotee El-P sent us “Smithereens (Stop Cryin’),” a leaked track from his forthcoming opus, I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead, due out in March. It will be the first solo disc in three years from the mastermind of Definitive Jux records (home to Aesop Rock, Cannibal Ox, Mr. Lif, et al.), and with guests like Trent Reznor, Cat Power’s Chan Marshall and Mars Volta’ Cedric Bixler-Zavala, it’s the most anticipated indie-rap release of 2007. As with the sci-fi geek and apocalypse freak’s previous tunes, “Smithereens” is a monstrously dense mélange of instrumental snippets, sound effects and bottom-heavy beats. It’s hard to make out many of the lyrics in the sonic swamp, but we did catch “plasticine packs” and “playing Double Dutch with a zombie,” which lead us to believe El-P’s visions of the future still don’t involve much peace and harmony.
