(Long) Weekend Rock List: Simply the Best

11/22/06, 3:31 pm EST

Last week we asked you guys to vote for the best American bands or artists who released an album this year. Apparently lots of you had a hard time with the directions because an inordinant number of votes came in for artists who were not eligible. (Did Wilco, The White Stripes, or Guns N’Roses release albums this year? No they did not.) So we’ve culled bands with the most votes AND who met the requirements of the poll. Your mission: choose from the top ten artists below and help determine 2006’s artist of the year. To help jog your memory, listen to key songs from the albums selected and then cast your vote. Try to wield your power in a benificent manor.

The Best American record goes to . . . (Drumroll)

My Morning Jacket barely edging out Pearl Jam mostly because Bob’s record seems recycled and he chooses to mumble his lyrics instead of sing.

    Jihad Jerry & The Evildoers

    T | 11/22/2006, 4:00 pm EST

    Pearl Jam!

Or, the Red Hot Brilliant Peppers.

    Either or.

    Yoshe | 11/22/2006, 4:02 pm EST

    Agreed PJ or RHCP

    Stipey | 11/22/2006, 4:03 pm EST

    Pearl Jam easily win.

The Pilot is Lost | 11/22/2006, 4:03 pm EST

My Morning Jacket claims the top band spot for me. They are at the top of their game right now and show no signs of weakening.

    ZipZapZopZoup | 11/22/2006, 4:04 pm EST

Removing my post to pretend you didn’t make a mistake? Classy.

    Darth Pop-Tart | 11/22/2006, 4:13 pm EST

My Morning JAcket opened for PJ this summer and I almost fell asleep!!!!! PJ wins easily!

    Hullothere | 11/22/2006, 4:14 pm EST

I enjoy many of these bands, but… anyone who’s seen TOOL in concert knows that they blow the competition away.

    (#2= MV, #3= BecK)

    Jeff | 11/22/2006, 4:15 pm EST

    Hey Rolling Stone

It’s not our fault you told us Chinese Democracy was coming out this Tuesday. What gives??

Have you guys taken to printing false info? How about an update, hmmm???

Either way, Stadium Arcadium is hands down the album of the year.

    HeyNow | 11/22/2006, 4:15 pm EST

Pearl Jam cannot claim anything but a top spot in anything.

    Jeff | 11/22/2006, 4:17 pm EST

Also, whoever said Tool blow RHCP away in a live setting,

Tool has not changed their setlist in over 50 shows. I’d be getting pretty good at it by now too.

Talk about a great band putting in the bare minimum 15 pieces of flair as a live act. They come every 5 years, and this tour they barely play an hour and a half and never change their set.

RHCP change 2 or 3 songs every night, not much, but they beat Tool this year and I saw both in the same week.

    Huh?? | 11/22/2006, 4:17 pm EST

Who is this mumbling Bob you speak of?

    Detroit2nyc | 11/22/2006, 4:18 pm EST

Pearl Jam. Easily. Hands down. Best band ever.

    Now how do I vote?

Voice of Reason | 11/22/2006, 4:21 pm EST

Pearl Jam is hands down the best band…just got to a live show and see for yourself, then try and go to another concert and see if you dont fall asleep…the fans, the band, and the songs make this a great experience

    me | 11/22/2006, 4:27 pm EST

    Pearl Jam

    Judas | 11/22/2006, 4:32 pm EST

    My Morning Jacket

    Steve C | 11/22/2006, 4:33 pm EST

While everything on the list deserves to be a contender, I thing nothing on the list is as mind-blowingly original as My Morning Jacket’s “Z”.

Hands down the bravest and most exciting album on the list.

    Rrowr | 11/22/2006, 4:33 pm EST

TV on the Radio or Bob Dylan, no question.

Pearl Jam? RHCP? Please, it smells a lot like 1992 around here…what the hell is wrong with you people?

    Ryan | 11/22/2006, 4:34 pm EST

    Pearl Jam

    SoonForgotten | 11/22/2006, 4:35 pm EST

Pearl Jam, no doubt about it. No one can touch them live and they’re only getting better.

    lanners | 11/22/2006, 4:38 pm EST

    Pearl Jam.

and yes, that is my final answer.

    will | 11/22/2006, 4:43 pm EST

    Mastodon still kills.

    Philip | 11/22/2006, 4:48 pm EST

Where the hell is the Hold Steady? Anyone who has heard Bys and Girls in America knows it’s the best rock album of the year.

    Present Tense | 11/22/2006, 4:49 pm EST

    PEARL JAAAAAAAAM

    M | 11/22/2006, 4:49 pm EST

Bob Dylan is Number 1, followed close by Pearl Jam and Beck

    kkyleh | 11/22/2006, 4:50 pm EST

    Bob Dylan or Beck

    azwyldcats | 11/22/2006, 4:51 pm EST

    Pearl Jam by a mile.

    Limboman | 11/22/2006, 4:52 pm EST

Either PJ or Dylan. Mnay good options here though…not a bad year.

    It's a Twistah | 11/22/2006, 4:56 pm EST

I agree w/a previous post regarding which year we are in. I have listened to PJ’s new LP and found it to be rather shallow. Not bad, but not great.
Dylan? No. Like him, but his schtick is getting tired and predictable.
    Beck? Good overall.
Bright Eyes? ummmm, not this year
    RHCP? regurgitating Californication
    Tool? Right up there.
    Strokes? A solid B average
TV on the Radio? Interesting but not epic
Which brings me to the band that is epic, intimate, intelligent, sprawling and diverse. I’ve seen them 2x this year and they just keep getting better.
    wait for it…
    not Your Evening Coat
    but…

    MY MORNING JACKET

Clearly the Best American Band of 2006

Drunk and Obese | 11/22/2006, 4:57 pm EST

My Morning Jacket. Why? Because they party on Columbus Day.

    Chadwick | 11/22/2006, 5:01 pm EST

Didn’t Drunk Kid Catholic come out in 2001?

    Matt Osborne | 11/22/2006, 5:10 pm EST

Pearl Jam absolutely has the best album from that list.

    Topher | 11/22/2006, 5:12 pm EST

That’s a tough one. On the strength of the albums this year I’d have to go with the Chili Peppers, Dylan, then Pearl Jam. However, overall I’d go with Dylan, Pearl Jam and then the Chili Peppers. The album of the year definitely has to be Stadium Arcadium.

    Mark | 11/22/2006, 5:14 pm EST

PJ by a Grungy Mile! Those guys R-O-C-K!!!

Bob Dylan?BOB SEGER NOW THERE’S ONE FINE NEW ALBUM

    Sean/Galway | 11/22/2006, 5:16 pm EST

Theres one and only one…PEARL JAM

Drunk and Obese | 11/22/2006, 5:17 pm EST

KELLY PICKLER, CLAY AIKEN, RUEBEN STUDDARD

    David F | 11/22/2006, 5:19 pm EST

I would have said Pearl Jam maybe 10 years ago, but not now. The last album (or three for that fact) haven’t done much for me. But now I think the Chili Peppers are the best band. Sure there are some weak spots on Stadium Arcadium and it definitely isn’t Blood Sugar Sex Magik, but John Frusciante is back with a vengeance and again has shown us all that he has the tastiest chops around. All hail Frusciante!

    David | 11/22/2006, 5:25 pm EST

    PEARL JAM

    Lawrence | 11/22/2006, 5:28 pm EST

Pearl Jam by a nose over The Raconteurs. PJ just has the best drummer around, best lead guitar player, with the best american songwriter since Dylan. I do wish they would drop “Rockin in the free world” from the set list, get some new covers to rock live!

    Chuck | 11/22/2006, 5:35 pm EST

I know alot of these are the “classics”..Pearl Jam, Dylan, even Peppers. But, I’m gonna have to go with the Strokes, my vote for best American band by far. The rest just aren’t interesting to me anymore, still good, just nothing new enough to intrigue me further.

    Joseph Rose | 11/22/2006, 5:40 pm EST

    PEARL JAM

No, you'll know MY name... | 11/22/2006, 5:44 pm EST

Hmm…how I can get from My Morning Jacket to RHCP—saw My Morning Jacket opened for Pearl Jam at the Meadowlands…Pearl Jam stole the show…Tool was playing at the Meadowlands shortly after them but couldn’t see them, instead saw…Mars Volta opene for the Chili Peppers…saw Chili Peppers 4th row…yeah, my vote Red Hot Chili Peppers.

    Evan | 11/22/2006, 5:50 pm EST

    billytp | 11/22/2006, 6:04 pm EST

pearl jam.. Respect the chilli peppers but talent wise pearl jam has the perfect equation… awsome vocalist, amazing band, great lyrics, and a tight live sound.

    Trees | 11/22/2006, 6:07 pm EST

    Beck.

F#ck me, Rolling Stone likes us to argue about sh!t

    LuvThat92Smell | 11/22/2006, 6:09 pm EST

PJ & RHCP showing up in 2006 is like the glorious days of the 90s when music wasn’t Spears, Aiken, Simpson or lite rockin’ 80s throwback Hinder bullshit. As I sit here in my flannel drowning in apathy I can’t decide who had the better album, Pearl Jam or RHCP but I’m going to go with PJ because I will love EdVed til I die.

    Souljah | 11/22/2006, 6:13 pm EST

Pearl Jam have by far been the most true to their ideals, fans and music. They’ve done it once again this year. Red Hot Chili Peppers feels synthetic this go around. Tool’s latest offering has some real junk on it. Beck? Just happy he’s still around even if he’s never been a great by any means. Dylan? A legend, but… it just isn’t that inspired anymore it seems. Others on the list are pretty much the new kids and their entrance to the stage isn’t even remotely close to the entrance of their competition in the early days… which I believe says something about them as bands overall.

    Ryan | 11/22/2006, 6:16 pm EST

Slayer They came out with a kick ass record.
    Mastodon did aswell.
    Lamb of God did too.
I would still have to go with chili peppers because their live show beats anybodys Tool is in a very close second.

    paul | 11/22/2006, 6:17 pm EST

    pearl jam

    mike | 11/22/2006, 6:17 pm EST

    pj(Pearl Jam)

    Ant | 11/22/2006, 6:18 pm EST

Pearl Jam, they are hands down the best rock band to have an album out this year

    Ditka | 11/22/2006, 6:19 pm EST

Dylan for sure. It is a breath of fresh air in shitty pop sounding world. Anywho, RHCP sing too many songs about Cali and their last album sounds like the last two they’ve made

    Karma | 11/22/2006, 6:19 pm EST

    My Morning Jacket..zzzzzzzzzzz
RHCP..Sta dium Arcadium has it moments, but should never have been a double disc. I have to say, these guys live just don’t do it for me. Keidis’ vocals are HORRIBLE. They really do a good job of covering this up on their records.
Pearl Jam.. seen them three times and must say their shows just really fucking kick ass! New album is 905 brilliant. Gotta go with PJ!

    J | 11/22/2006, 6:28 pm EST

TV on the Radio released the best album this year, so they win. Pearl Jam sucked this year.

    I | 11/22/2006, 6:38 pm EST

I’d give it to Bright Eyes. True, the record is a compilation, but they (he) deserves it more than the rest of the bands up there.

Ask My Weiner | 11/22/2006, 6:45 pm EST

between Pearl jam and RHCP, the Chili Peppers made the better album, so my vote goes to them.

    John | 11/22/2006, 6:50 pm EST

I loved Sam’s Town. The Killers surprised me greatly with an album that I think could be one of my favorites ever.

    Joe | 11/22/2006, 7:02 pm EST

    People, people, people…

Pearl Jam and the Peppers top the list of best American releases this year? This must have been a sorry ass year for American music. You know what? Surprise! It was!

American hip-hop continues to parody itself with photocopied, sexist, capitalist blah-blah-blah.

The American mainstream rock scene seems content to relive the 1970’s in terms of both songwriting and production values.

The American alternative rock scene is as far away from alternative as ever. College DJs are either spinning meek-and-mild emo or the latest band to go alt-country (Calexico, Neko Case, etc…)

Everything else in this country is buried by either listener indifference or our monolithic pop radio industry, stuck looking for the latest Miss Thang to shake her tits to beats by Timbaland.

The “rock” record this year was TV On The Radio’s “Return To Cookie Mountain.” As good as it was, try humming a melody from the album. You can’t because none of them stick.

The best 2006 release far and away was Girl Talk’s “Night Ripper.” Shockingly original, fresh and fun. Everything else… Well… Better luck next time music industry.

    may | 11/22/2006, 7:06 pm EST

    pearl jam takes my vote…

    Donovan | 11/22/2006, 7:11 pm EST

Beck or (even though not on that list of ten) My Morning Jacket

    FR | 11/22/2006, 7:15 pm EST

    TOOL

    ck | 11/22/2006, 7:30 pm EST

TOOL. easy . How do you vote on this anyway?

    you people are obviously insane…

    Terry F. | 11/22/2006, 7:51 pm EST

Los Lobos and Sonic Youth put out the some of the best music of their careers. Chili Peppers SUCK!!!!!!! Pearl Jam is GOD AWFUL!!!!! of the list provided-it would have to be Dylan.

    Bright Eyes, definetly.

    andrei | 11/22/2006, 8:09 pm EST

pearl jam. always is the best band.

red hot chili peppers but without the califonication vibe..

    vote cast: pearl jam

    jared t | 11/22/2006, 8:09 pm EST

PEARL JAM, love all the other bands but c’mon, its pearl jam

    kuyt | 11/22/2006, 8:10 pm EST

probably give it to the strokes. close behind would be bound stems, we are scientists, and the rapture. best american bands right now, though? spoon and the white stripes, definitely. too bad our brothers up in Canadia are owning us right now. Spencer Krug’s bands alone (Wolf Parade, Sunset Rubdown, and Swan Lake) are better than anything American that’s come out this year.

    Chaps219er | 11/22/2006, 8:12 pm EST

The Jams, no contest, next question!

    Mikey | 11/22/2006, 8:13 pm EST

Pearl Jam. Period. Try listening to the album and not just assuming they’re now irrelevant cuz they’ve been around for so long. It’s absolutely amazing. And live, come on, almost totally new setlists on a nightly basis plus no one compares with the interaction with the fans. It’s not simply a show, its an experience…

    Yopeeps | 11/22/2006, 8:14 pm EST

I give it to the Red Hot Chili Peppers
    followed by:
    My Morning Jacket
    T.V. on the Radio
    Tool

    Edderman | 11/22/2006, 8:17 pm EST

Pearl Jam is the winner. The only band that I can say does a great job keeping the origin of rock n’ roll from 60s and 70s “Alive”. Great lyics, great guitar, great shows, etc…Guitarist Mike McCready does the best guitar solo of Hendrick’s “Little Wing”. If you can get a ahold of a live show with this song, you’ll be a PJ fan instantly. Can say enough about this band. I hope we get a chance to see them play live when we in our 50s.

    atomickidcup | 11/22/2006, 8:18 pm EST

8 letters … 2 words.. Pearl Jam. Playing with a neverending fire!

    Oh sure! | 11/22/2006, 8:19 pm EST

Who ever said “Pearl Jam? Maybe ten years ago!” is sort of ridiculous. I really love the direction of the new album and they have a lot of great things to say. I would be just as happy to see the Peppers get it though too.

    atomickidcup | 11/22/2006, 8:19 pm EST

I can just about guarantee that anyone who doesn’t pick Pearl Jam hasn’t seem them live.

I’d equate live pearl jam compared to any other band along the lines of sex with your dream girl compared to sex with….yourself

    that is all

    Pete | 11/22/2006, 8:32 pm EST

    Pearl Jam. Tom Waits. Mastodon.

    puzzlewise | 11/22/2006, 8:32 pm EST

Drive by Truckers, great album(blessing and a curse) killer live show. Long live the DBT!

    M | 11/22/2006, 8:36 pm EST

I’m feeling all the Pearl Jam love here. Finally some people who know what’s going on. PJ is, has and always will be the greatest band of all time.

    Bold statement, yes…
    True?
    YOU KNOW IT!!!

    A.J. | 11/22/2006, 8:39 pm EST

best album of the year was broken boy soldiers by the raconteurs by far, from the list i would probably go with dylan

    TF | 11/22/2006, 8:43 pm EST

If I had 100 votes, I would give them all to Pearl Jam. Best album of the year. Best live band in the last 15 years. Best connection to fans.

…And saying “it’s not 1992″ is not a reason to say a band isn’t relevant or talented.

    PS | 11/22/2006, 8:45 pm EST

Keep in mind people that Red Hot Chili Peppers are more main stream than Pearl Jam. Pearl Jam is fueled by loyal fans and great music. Screw the American Music Awards!!

    Josh | 11/22/2006, 8:51 pm EST

Pearl Jam by far best album of the year. Jarring energy and a fan base that never left. Pearl Jam is more relevant than ever.

    don’t forget about tom petty

    PEARLLLLLLLLL JAMMMMMMMMM!

    From a rainy Holland | 11/22/2006, 9:08 pm EST

This is totally insane, there is no such thing as a best album, it’s all about what you like, you yourself, and not about what record sold the best. Not everyone likes the music, you know. That’s also why my conclusion is and will always be that there is no such thing as ‘the best band in the world’. Can I have my own opinion about what’s the best new released album of the year?

    Warzawa | 11/22/2006, 9:10 pm EST

This is a tough one between TV on the Radio and Pearl Jam. TV on the Radio’s album starts off firing and holds up for the first half but it loses steam after that. While Pearl Jam’s CD is more traditional and not as creative, the song-writing is more consistently good and Eddie can still give me goosebumps (Come Back). So, I give the nod to Pearl Jam.

    MF | 11/22/2006, 9:19 pm EST

It’s gotta be Pearl Jam. Just a solid album. Nothing on it that you would skip over. It has it all, heavy tracks that blow your head apart, beautiful melodic tunes and slow burners that just simply give you the chills. Awesome album, awesome band.

    F | 11/22/2006, 9:23 pm EST

Pearl Jam. No doubt. They are so unique and every member is an absolute genious in his craft. Eddie’s voice is as strong as ever and can conquer any style, Stone’s riffs are infectious, McCready’s lead and blistering solos are mind blowing, Jeff’s rhythm and range with the bass is phenomenal and Matt Cameron is simply a machine. And they are all so clear in the mix. You can hear and appreciate every single member and what they offer and bring to, what is undoubtedly, the best album of 2006.

    F | 11/22/2006, 9:25 pm EST

Oh ya, and Boom is used perfectly and is just straight up bad ass.

I believe I’ve have ‘Someday Baby ‘ done with Mick jagger and Keith Richards and Jimmy rogers on a Jimmy Rogers Allstars record It was called Trouble Me No More”. That’s a great version and so is this one. You don’t have to re-invent the wheel just build one that rolls smoother… After it’s called Rock AND roll.

Uh .. My Morning Jacket’s “Z” was released last year. The only way they’re in contention is if LIVE albums count somehow … which they shouldn’t. I stand by the Drive By Truckers as best American band, and “A Blessing and A Curse” as the best album of the year.

dont tally up dumb peoples votes…

    Go | 11/22/2006, 10:47 pm EST

    Pearl Jam gets my vote.

    Dan | 11/22/2006, 10:49 pm EST

Or could it just be that Pearl Jam is in fact THAT good and did put out a PHENOMENAL album this year.

    Noiceness | 11/22/2006, 10:57 pm EST

The black keys new album is pretty rad……

    Yes? No?

    Mike | 11/22/2006, 11:00 pm EST

    Definately YES

    Craig | 11/22/2006, 11:04 pm EST

    Pearl Jam by far.

    Cole | 11/22/2006, 11:09 pm EST

I’d have to say Beck, because his new album really pulls together the threads of his brilliant career into a wonderful album. What about Tom Waits though?

    andrew | 11/22/2006, 11:28 pm EST

chilis. brought back the funk after 4 yrs and by the way. 28 songs, very little filler.

    subwaybench15 | 11/22/2006, 11:29 pm EST

pearl jam is the best band ever, and had the best album of 2006 by far. tool’s album has 5 good songs, pj has 13 great songs. RHCP has 2 albums of the same bad chorus, they gotta give it up. that is all.

    Brian | 11/22/2006, 11:35 pm EST

3 way tie for me at least:
    Beck
    My Morning Jacket
    TV on the Radio

    Jessica | 11/22/2006, 11:44 pm EST

Pearl Jam, hands down. These guys never let you down with their new albums, their shows are always amazing, and they just kick ass.

    BostonMike | 11/22/2006, 11:44 pm EST

    Pearl Jam as always…then Tool

    Fathoms | 11/22/2006, 11:51 pm EST

MMJ, followed by Mars Volta. This years Tool album is sub-par.

    John | 11/23/2006, 12:14 am EST

    BECK

    Jeff Mangum | 11/23/2006, 12:47 am EST

Gotta give it to My Morning Jacket, though it’s a shame The Hold Steady didn’t make the top 10……Oh, and Ghostface Killah had an incredible album this year.

the greatest band | 11/23/2006, 1:07 am EST

    sonic youth’s rather ripped

    Anonymous | 11/23/2006, 1:23 am EST

Red Hot Chili Peppers without a question! It was a double album and and everyone song was good, so thats 27 kick ass songs. You cant beat it

    TheTunefreak | 11/23/2006, 1:30 am EST

I’d have to say The Red Hot Chilli Peppers…
A CLOSE second would be Tool…

    b-backs | 11/23/2006, 1:43 am EST

pearl jam fans are just excited for the come back of their band, but lets be real, their album is not as hyped up as all of you say it is…. they’ve been out of the game too long….. hands down the chilli peppers had the greatest album of the year out of all the listed bands… dual disc, 27 songs of great rock and roll, i mean flea is the greatest bassist of our generation, John rips it on guitar and has improved every year since he joined RHCP, Anthony we all know has a sick voice for their type of music, and drums I mean lets be real they bring it on this album….. so all of you pearl jam fans stop being so biased and just admit that RHCP kicked the rock scene this year…..

    b-backs | 11/23/2006, 1:45 am EST

by the way, the raconteurs released their record in may of 2006 and total should have been an option, and def a possible winner…..

    Matt | 11/23/2006, 2:04 am EST

First of all, there’s no doubting that the Chili Peppers are a great band. But saying Pearl Jam fans are excited cuz the band has been gone for so long is ridiculous. First off, as an RHCP fan, Stadium Arcadium had 28 songs, not 27. Second, their previous album to the 2006 release was 2002’s By The Way. Ironically, Pearl Jam’s last album, Riot Act, was released in 2002. Also, in 2003, PJ released Lost Dogs, a double disc of b sides that is fantastic. In 2003, RHCP put out a greatest hits album and so did PJ in 2004. Also, Pearl Jam releases every one of their concerts as official bootlegs and if people gave them a try, they would be absolutely blown away by this band live. A concert is just an absolute experience. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge RHCP fan, but the record, tho awesome, is a little overwhelming and hard to get fully into. Pearl Jam’s album was in no way a come back, they never left. They’ve been as relevant as ever. People who never gave their albums a chance cuz they loved “Jeremy” so much are the ones who believe they have been gone for so long. Plus, this band basically hasn’t stopped touring since 2004, with little breaks here and there. Come on people, like what you will, I could care a less if everyone doesn’t love PJ, but don’t be ignorant and say people only like the album cuz they haven’t done anything for so long. Have an opinion, just have a clue what your talking about.

    Andy | 11/23/2006, 2:07 am EST

Exactly, well put. I definately vote for Pearl Jam.

    Khunger | 11/23/2006, 2:20 am EST

    Pearl Jam all the way!

    Rich | 11/23/2006, 3:10 am EST

BECK – They played Beck’s latest CD over-and-over one Friday night on College Radio. And the more they played it, the better it sounded. Now when I was a kid, a truly good album always had a nice slow burn. I’m 44 now, but I still prefer the nice slow burn of a really good album. I think BECK’S The Information has that. My evaluation is rather simplistic, but it’s worked for me in the past.

    IGGY | 11/23/2006, 3:45 am EST

    Pearl Jam gets my vote!

    noone | 11/23/2006, 4:24 am EST

mmj is the best for sure, followed by wilco. pearl jam, though an incredibly strong live band, hasn’t made a good album in about 12 years and is irrelevant now.

Davie Buck Boyd | 11/23/2006, 4:25 am EST

Pearl Jam, plane and simple. They are politically relevant as a band, they are always pressing the boundaries of music, they dont settle for all the trappings of being a rock star, and most importantly they keep on producing great music that rocks (whether we notice it or not)

    Calindie | 11/23/2006, 4:46 am EST

Pearl Jam.Because they KICK ASS live. And you know thats rare.

Are you kidding me | 11/23/2006, 5:20 am EST

Are you kidding me, why have a contest like this. It’s like if someone said is Michael Jordan better than Luc Longley or is Al Pacino a better actor than Ashton Kucher. Hey folks, Pearl Jam is the greatest band of all – time. Now all of you go to sleep. If you vote for someone other than Pearl Jam you are a music retard.

    J | 11/23/2006, 5:56 am EST

REd Hot Chili Peppers, i also like pearl jam but they have become way too political

    Kramer | 11/23/2006, 6:20 am EST

    PEARL JAM!

    two words. Pearl jam.

    RonRonTaiwan | 11/23/2006, 7:25 am EST

Has anyone ever heard of Valient Thorr? Pearl Jam is good; but, when it comes to rocking, Valient Thorr would rape them. Rape them! Their 2005 album is one of the best hard rock-n-roll albums of all time, in my opinion; but, their 2006 album isn’t bad at all.

    Fortunate Son | 11/23/2006, 8:03 am EST

    My Morning Jacket!
In ten years will look back when they are a U2-esque band and remember how we liked them from the start.
The strokes have huge potential if they stay smart, and pearl jam/ bob dylan are the reigning kings of american music.
Mars Volta is a great band, and could achieve a pink floyd like status with a couple more good records.

    Johnny O.... | 11/23/2006, 8:04 am EST

Stadium Arcadium…..whatever….RHCP’ s use to be a great band until they went mainstream. Who can sit down and listen to their latest album and then throw on Mother’s Milk and honestly tell me it’s better!? The Chilli’s use to make great punk/funk music back in the day…the last several years have seen them sellout (bigtime I might add).

I never was a Pearl Jam fan until this year. I heard worldwide suicide, bought the album and was blown away. A great album with diversity. Then saw them for the first time and I was blown away. I saw the RHCP’s for the 4th time this year and although it was a half decent show, it doesn’t compare to pearl jam live…not even close. Album of the year, ’self-titled’ by pearl jam and my second vote is Tool.

    Canadian Boy | 11/23/2006, 8:04 am EST

Pearl Jam the finest band on the planet with the best Cd of 2006. Well next to Neil Young’s Living with War but Neil’s Cd doesn’t count in this poll. So lets hear it for Pearl Jam. Eh!!!!

    Roberta | 11/23/2006, 8:43 am EST

    It’s way too easy!

    PEARL JAM

    toaster_perfect | 11/23/2006, 8:50 am EST

I dont see the trashing of RHCP going anywhere. Sure they usd to be great, and hell, they still have that greatness shining offf and on, but think of them as U2. Remember when they went and made those obscure pop albums? That was a similar mistake. Perhaps the RHCP are just trying something different.

Either way, they do not qualify for top band, as Pearl Jam (yes, like most people here I am leaning their direction) have outdone many bands this year. Arguably their best album.

    Al | 11/23/2006, 8:53 am EST

    Boris Dignan | 11/23/2006, 10:46 am EST

Good year for American Rock. Lots of great records this year.

The Pearl Jam record was awesome. Got to see them live at Reading this year and was completly blown away.

Pearl Jam may be aging…but aging like a fine bottle of red wine.

    Later

    THE STROKES MOST DEFINATLY!

    KTM | 11/23/2006, 10:49 am EST

    Pearl Jam.

Hands down the best American Rock Band ever to grace the stage. Album after album, they continue to offer up choice songs that rock, pull your heart out and awaken your political self.

    Gonzo1977 | 11/23/2006, 10:52 am EST

RHCP album was a double album of sell out commercial ass dribble.

The Tool album was pretentious, predictable, and boring.

Pearl Jam’s album Fucking Rocked !! Still the best American Rock Band in my opinion.

    Felipe | 11/23/2006, 10:56 am EST

I love My Morning Jacket album. Great souther sound. Also Dylan´s awesome but where the hell is Bruce Springsteen “We Shall Overcome…”. That´s a real american record.

    Moe | 11/23/2006, 11:01 am EST

David F,I couldn’t agree more,John Frusciante is a genius, love him!!The band and record of the year are rhcp and stadium arcadium.

    Dave | 11/23/2006, 11:05 am EST

World Wide Suicide was a kick ass album. I have to give it to Pearl Jam. As far as a live act? I’d love to see any of these other bands listed even think about learning a song BETWEEN the main set and the encore, then play it! PJ did that with the Guess Who’s Running Back To Saskatoon. That was ballsy. None of these other acts would even consider it. Especially, by the sounds of it, Tool.

    martino | 11/23/2006, 11:07 am EST

    Ween

    Chimera | 11/23/2006, 11:08 am EST

Does anyone on this list listen to music complexity?!
Tool’s 10000 Days doesn’t have the radio-friendly appeal (although Rosetta Stoned is easily the best song of the year!)of Pearl Jam and the rest of the list but holy fuck, NO ONE can match their complexity, their musicianship, and their ability to not get caught up in the mainstream like most of the rest of the list (Bob is the exception!). Eddie fears Maynard and there is not a person out there who can see Tool live and not walk away saying they are the greatest band of our time.

    Steve-0 | 11/23/2006, 11:09 am EST

oh yeah its those guys for sure eh, i used ta listen to ‘em when i was a kid, well not a kid but you know what I mean. there the best band going today man solid american rock….bla, bla, bla

the only solid album of this year was Petty’s and it didn’t make the list? Dylan is good too, and tool but where the f is petty at?

    chris | 11/23/2006, 11:10 am EST

Tom Petty should be up there

Pearl Jam. There is no other band that comes close. i saw a majority of these bands live this year but I went and saw Pearl Jam seven times and suffered a major depression once those shows were over. No other band does that. Pearl Jam hands down.

    gvalladare | 11/23/2006, 11:24 am EST

    Pearl Jam.

    rustyshackleford | 11/23/2006, 11:26 am EST

    Timo | 11/23/2006, 2:19 pm EST

As a once HUGE Pearl Jam fan, it is hard for me to say this about them… BUT.. I would have to say that all of this praise for them is undeserved. I have seen them live several times, I own all of their studio releases and many live albums. Their music has steadily DECLINED ever since the Vs/Vitalogy era. The most recent album is boring and monotonous- severely lacking the diversity that previous albums contained. Think of “WMA”, “Who You Are”, “Oceans”…. there is a total absence of anything like that on the self-titled album. The same guitar effects, the same tired grunge/punk-lite mix, the same tempos- C’mon! PJ are great musicians who have failed to push themselves to create records over the last 10 years that come anywhere near the caliber of their first few efforts.

Compare them to Radiohead or the Chili Peppers… bands who have had similar success over roughly the same era. (I know.. Radiohead is NOT an American band) Radiohead is hands-down the most artistically unique and creative band in the world, and the Peppers have put out 3 straight tremendous albums that only show musical progression, diversity, and passion.

    Bring on the rebuttals….

    Baba | 11/23/2006, 2:54 pm EST

In the article above, you smugly scold people for voting for artists that haven’t had albums released this year. Off the Record by My Morning Jacket was my fave song… of 2005, not 2006.

    bloodzilla | 11/23/2006, 4:40 pm EST

it’s definitely tv on the radio. they made the best album of the year.

    bloodzilla | 11/23/2006, 4:41 pm EST

    rollingstoned | 11/23/2006, 4:52 pm EST

The Strokes have been the best American band for a while but unfortunately they only show it for about half of “First Impressions of Earth”. At it’s best (the first half and “Red Light”) it’s brilliant.

    At it’s worst…..it’s Pearl Jam.

    Jeff | 11/23/2006, 5:07 pm EST

TV on the Radio all the way, though I’m guessing given their widespread popularity, that RHCP will ultimately take it.

    WHAT? (2 posters down) | 11/23/2006, 5:18 pm EST

If you think the Strokes are the best American band & Pearl Jam is the worst you’re a F**KING IDIOT.

Julian, the singer of the Strokes, used to be in a Pearl Jam cover band called ‘Daughter’ for f**ks sake.

When Pearl Jam’s last album came out, the members of the Strokes wanted to hear songs off the new PJ album played during an interview instead of their own songs.

& you have the balls after that to say PJ is the worst & the Strokes are the best? Eat sh*t.

And the RHCP didn’t “take it” (to the poster below) because the majority of the votes here are for Pearl Jam

Rolling Stone chose a picture of Eddie Vedder for this because they knew his band represents American music at its best more than any other band.

    No Code | 11/23/2006, 5:27 pm EST

Pearl Jam are really the best band ever. All those other acts are great with the exception of TV on the Radio.Pearl Jam have been miles ahead of all other bands,American or otherwise, since 1991 and will be for a long time to come. The Strokes are really great too.

    rollingstoned | 11/23/2006, 5:30 pm EST

Look, the fact that the Strokes like Pearl Jam is completely irrelevant. Iggy Pop loved the Doors – you can love Iggy and dislike the Doors – get me? Good….now let’s move on.

What was so exciting about the Strokes is that they weren’t anything like Pearl Jam (or Nirvana for that matter) – they had short snappy sexy songs filled with a fun attitude.

They weren’t droning odes to inner despair and shit like that. They can like Pearl jam all they want but the lumbering Pearl Jam-like songs on “First Impressions” suck – and, yeah Pearl Jam sucks too.

You wanna listen to them – fine, but they are a drag. That ain’t Rock & Roll – it’s a therapy session with electric guitars.

    No Fun.

Televsion . What ? You say you’ve never heard of Television ? They only single-handedly started NYC punk revolution before the Sex Pistols, before The Ramones, before The Talking Heads…yeah they were/are the real deal. U2,REM, even Pearl Jam were influenced by them. Check here for more: http://tv.obbard.com

My Morning Jacket is a good band but the winner in my opinion is Pearl Jam. They have survived plenty since those Grudge years in the early 90’s. How many of those bands are still around. And in 2006 Pearl Jam releases one of their best. I don’t even think “Worldwide Suicide” is the best song on the CD. But it is a blast to hear them return to form. The CD is not as good as “Ten” or ” Vs.” but it is miles ahead of most of what was released this year. I hope they can last another 15 years.

Man, when I see all these votes for Pearl Jam I get really scared that the 90s are coming back and it’s going to be back to cardigans and angst and getting in touch with your inner despair.

Voting for Pearl Jam as the best American band in 2006 is like voting for Foghat as the best American band in 1976.

Can I ask – how old the people are voting for them are? I’m 37 and in my circle they , and the Grunge era bands from the 90s are widely perceived as a joke – where’s the melody? It’s so tuneless.

I mean really they’re just an arena band – they’re not so different from Bad Company to me.

    Stip | 11/23/2006, 9:20 pm EST

vote goes to pearl jam, although beck’s album is also quite good

    rollingstoned | 11/23/2006, 9:20 pm EST

They wouldn’t crack my top 100 American bands. I guess they have a dedicated fan base that supports them in those kind polls and this one.

That’s cool. I admire alot of things about PJ. Their relationship to their fans, their integrity, their stance against Ticketmaster.

I just wish it translated to the tunes. I found the 90s scene a drag – and they were a big part of the reason why.

I think i grew up with a certain idea of what Rock & Roll is and what isn’t – and to me PJ isn’t it…..way too self conscious, and humorless.

    rollingstoned | 11/23/2006, 9:22 pm EST

Bravo to the dude who said Westerberg. Bless you, Happy Thanskgiving.

    Mikey | 11/23/2006, 9:28 pm EST

I vote Pearl Jam. First off, to the post 5 below, I’m 22, and if the music of the early 90’s “came back” then music would actually be good once again. Teenage angst and inner despair is simply an ignorant comment. Of PJ’s countless catalogue, to say that’s all they sing about proves you know what, Jeremy, that’s about it. I guess you prefer the tight pants, makeup wearing, jagged haircut emo bands of today. AnAs for the “Grunge” era, simply referring to it as that is a joke. Grunge isn’t anything, its a made up ridiculous term. It was just a way for the media to classify a group of bands who all came from the same place in Seattle. And tuneless, come on, Eddie’s vocal range is not comparable to anyone out there. His power and control can take on any style of music, harder or softer.

    rollingstoned | 11/23/2006, 9:32 pm EST

When I saw “tuneless” I mean lacking melody. I dunno, if the 90s came back I’d probably shoot myself…..Not crazy about the emo bands either but I did think “Is This It” and “Up the Bracket” were breaths of fresh air – hedonistic Rock albums not weighed down with the ponderous quality of the 90s bands – whether you want to call them grunge or whatever.

I guess cause you’re only 22 you didn’t actually live through it – trust me, you didn’t miss anything in that decade – it was the low point for Rock & Roll.

    Mikey | 11/23/2006, 9:39 pm EST

That was true of PJ in the early 90’s. But as they’ve grown, they’ve become very different. They no longer take everything so seriously. There appreciating everything and simply having fun doing what they love. Listen to a bootleg and see for yourself has to how much they love doing what they’re doing. Also, listen to Big Wave off their new album. That song is pure fun and in no way serious. Just a show of appreciation and love for the ocean and surfing done in a very upbeat rocking song. i;m very much a classic rock fan. Bands of today just don’t seem to do it for me. Coming out of Seattle, PJ, Nirvana, Soundgarden and Alice in Chains all got lumped together but all had totally different sounds to their music. Soundgarden and AIC were more metal and Nirvana I guess would be the closest thing to grunge if you want to call it that. PJ is the closest thing to classic rock since classic rock. Just listen beyond what you think you know I guess. They are just true music fans themselves, they show their appreciation nightly with the covers they perform. Listen to Mike McCready play Little Wing, or Eddie wail any (Uncle) Neil Young tune and this is totally justified. They are guitar driven, have an amazing rhythm section, and a singer who is simply phenomenal and unique, if that isn’t similar to the bands of the 60’s and 70’s, I don’t know what is.

    Jason | 11/23/2006, 9:40 pm EST

    I’m still voting for Springsteen.

    Mikey | 11/23/2006, 9:48 pm EST

Have a listen to Marker in the Sand off the new album. The chorus is probably the most melodic thing you will or have heard in quite some time. I’m 22 but wise beyond my years. The glam rock and hair bands of the 80’s were simply too much but music was making a return to its roots in the early 90’s until the media tried to commercialize the hell out of everything and then the whole pop scence re-emerged which was just horrendous. Music was simply the most inventive and innovative in the 60’s and 70’s.

“Nausea” AND “Dani California” ARE MY FAVORITE SONGS FROM THIS YEAR. THE RED HOT CHILLI PEPPERS ARE AN AMAZING BAND. NOT MANY MUSICIANS CAN INNOVATE AN ENTIRE NEW GENRE, AS THEY DID WITH SUCH SUCCESS. AND BECK MAKES SOME AWESOME RECORDS, HE’S DEFINITELY AN IMPORTANT FIGURE TO ALTERNATIVE MUSIC.

    Dan | 11/23/2006, 10:11 pm EST

HAHAHAHAA, I love people’s rip that PJ is Nicleback. It’s not funny and never will be. It’s like sayin Bright Eyes sound like a 13 year old boy singing while going through puberty and is close to breaking down in tears. Nickleballs suck, bottom line. I don’t understand how people can say Pearl Jam is ordinary and aren’t good musicians. Those comments can’t even be taken remotely serious. With that, hands down the album of the year was Pearl Jam.

    Clif | 11/23/2006, 10:13 pm EST

I’m gonna have to go along with that PJ, Nickelback rip…..that really is what they are like – doesn’t matter who came first, it’s that some adenoidal arena stuff…..I mean they just don’t have the tunes.

I won’t rip how good “musicians” they are….that has next to nothing to do with making great Rock music – it’s just PJ never had the tunes……it’s just average stuff……it’s RAWK but it ain’t Rock & Roll.

    Don | 11/23/2006, 10:48 pm EST

Don’t be ri-dong-ulous, Nickelback is arena cock rock. PJ makes beautiful, meaningful music that actually matters.

    PJ all the way!

    Matt | 11/23/2006, 10:58 pm EST

Are you kidding me? Pearl Jam!!! No contest. Lyrically, Bob Dylan is the greatest.

elderly woman behind the count | 11/23/2006, 11:17 pm EST

Pearl Jam have always been dynamic and nuanced beyond any generic cock- rock band the uninitiated might feel the need to compare them too.

    Jack | 11/24/2006, 12:01 am EST

I am huge Pearl Jam fan, but I am having trouble picking their album as the best one of the year. Same as the last 2 they put out. “Binaural” was great in 2000, but “Kid A” was better. “Riot Act” was great in 2002, but “Sea Change” was better. And “Pearl Jam” is great for 2006, but “The Information” by Beck is a better album. Not to knock Pearl Jam, and they are my favorite band, (I’ve seen them live 9 times) but the aforementioned albums are all 4 and half stars. The other albums mentioned; Kid A, Sea Change, The Information, are all 5 stars. That certainly doesn’t mean they are a bad band, but it does make them the underdog, and I’m sure they would love to be in that position. So for the win, Pearl Jam as American Band of the year.

    Jack | 11/24/2006, 12:05 am EST

If you think Pearl Jam are humorless, I suggest you listen to “Lost Dogs”. It’s impossible for me to listen to “Dirty Frank”, “Black Red Yellow”, “Gremmie Out of Control”, “Sweet Lew”, or “Don’t Gimme No Lip” without cracking up.

    Wow | 11/24/2006, 12:14 am EST

I guess my vote is pointless, as PJ is receiving tons of votes, sadly. At least very few are voting Tool. It’s too bad because Beck is the hands down winner and The Information blows PJ out of the water. It’s not close.

You know, I heard all this hype that PJ was their best in years, possibly ever. Boy, was I disapointed. Sure, it’s better than their last couple of albums and Marker is a really good song (though nowhere near “most melodic thing I have heard in quite some time”). But they simply don’t even come close to some of these artists at their creative peaks. Beck’s album The Strokes and MMJ were also significantly better. Both had some absolute gems and a couple of snoozers. RHCP and TV on the Radio were better, as well.

I read at least one post that seemed to give bonus points to Pearl Jam for being around for so long and consistently good and “true to their ideals, fans and music.” Calling others new kids or whatever. That’s absolute rubbish. It doesn’t matter if it’s a couple of twenty year-olds cutting songs in their garage. The albums I mentioned are just plain better. Also, these artists put out better material (in some cases MUCH better):

    Baboon
    Ho-Hum
    Le s Claypool
    Built To Spill
    Secret Machines
    The Flaming Lips
    Bound Stems
    even the damn Burden Brothers

Yeah, Pearl Jam doesn’t sniff the top ten anymore. Hell, there are bands I’d rather listen to that I’m embarrassed to mentioned over the latest Pearl Jam album.

    EK | 11/24/2006, 12:31 am EST

Pearl Jam are boring, generic rock, and their most recent album is clearly an attempt to remake Ten, so no.

Bob Dylan gave up on innovation in favor of stale blues retreads, so he’s out.

Tool became A Perfect Circle 2.0 while effectively erasing whatever good qualities they had, so not them.

The Strokes put out their worst album this year, so they’re out.

TV On The Radio are good, but they’re not the best…yet.

My Morning Jacket is good, but not as great as people seem to say.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are a one-act band who’ve kept going way past their prime, so no.

The Mars Volta are an atrocity and proof that Emerson, Lake and Palmer did a service to society by breaking up.

Bright Eyes is a talentless hack of a child with a poor grasp of lyrical intution and absolutely no sense of melody, structure, or anything else necessary for writing good music.

    Hmm…I guess that leaves Beck.

    EK | 11/24/2006, 12:32 am EST

Actually, scratch that. Built To Spill is the best band in America until Pavement or the Replacements reunite.

There’s not a band that is closer to it’s fan base, putts on great show (and different sets) every night, and has been consistently putting out great music. Also, Hat’s off to Neil Young’s album Living with War… I think he states clearly what millions of us our feeling. Keep on Rockin’ In the Free World!!!!

    Kash | 11/24/2006, 1:31 am EST

    Tool.

Even though Dylan, Mars Volta, Pearl Jam and RHCP’s albums were better, Tool’s resulting tour and Coachella performance put them over the top. A live album (albeit a damn good one), doesn’t count; otherwise, I’d say My Morning Jacket, with their Bonnaroo masterpiece would have won.

    JH | 11/24/2006, 2:20 am EST

I can’t believe Sonic Youth didn’t make this list. “Rather Ripped” was the best rock record of the year. But out of this group, I have to go with Pearl Jam. I saw them play with Tom Petty at Summerfest in Milwaukee this year, and anyone who thinks Eddie Vedder isn’t a good musician or performer is flat out wrong.

    You moron.

The fact that Pearl Jam inspires so much passion both ways says something to me. It’s like movies these days… you get all this shit that you don’t have to think twice about and that you forget immediately. Then you get that one movie that fires people up in one way or another. People feel something when they watch it. That’s sort of like Pearl Jam. They make you have a reaction and that’s pretty damn rare these days when everything seems to be a mockery of itself. There’s some good music on this list, there’s some real crap. But I’ll give it to Pearl Jam this year.

I find it funny that Mars Volta make that list, as the only member born in the U.S. is their “current” drummer. I say current, as they’ve gone through 3 drummers in 5 monthes.

    P.M. | 11/24/2006, 9:26 am EST

Pearl Jam is fantastic, I’ll give you that; but I never fully got into their new album. Yes, I will say that it is like their older stuff and it could be called a return-to-form; however it’s got an abundance of obscure songs that are a pain to listen to (Think ‘Severed Hand’ and ‘Comatose’)that are spread over many a fantastic song (‘Unemployable’, ‘Life Wasted’, ‘Marker in Sand’, ‘Parachutes’). Stadium Arcadium has a myriad of problems with it, mainly that my attention to the Second Disc (Mars) is gone after the 6th song. Jupiter is fantastic, but I think a little restraint on the Chili Peppers part could have made a superior single disc, as opposed to a lackluster dual disc shelf filler. Bright Eyes had his moment…on the O.C., and My Morning Jacket are good, but considerably less talented than the likes of Bob Dylan and Beck. TV on the Radio are fantastic and their album is strong, but as stated earlier, the only real “conventional”, shall we say, song is Wolf Like Me, even though I think that from track 5 on, the CD gets better and better. TOOL went all progressive with 10,000 Days, which the Mars Volta have been doing since the bitter end of At the Drive-In (Circa 2001). And frankly, TOOL, go back to fast, loud rock. Leave the psychedelic prog-rock to the Volta, after all, they do know how to do it so much better (see: The Volta’s live shows and the rate at which their tickets sell). The only band I didn’t touch on would be the band I would vote for: The Strokes. The sheer brilliance of “Is this It” is still marveled by many and it defined their sound early on, however the shitheap that was Room on Fire was unacceptable and highly unconventional. Save for a few tracks that DID shine on that CD (Reptilia, Under Control, What Ever Happened?) ROF was very VERY forgettable. First Impression of Earth, however, is a masterpiece. I originally thought of it to be too pretentious and very undesirable, however, on a second and third listening to, it has become my favourite CD since 2000 (Well…only behind De-loused in the Comatorium). The Strokes, for overcoming the abusive lifestyle of the “typical” rockstar and for maintaining a fresh and positive outlook on New Music, get my vote for best American rock band, single and album of this year. And for those of you who actually read all this…I salute you.

    argent | 11/24/2006, 9:32 am EST

    1) Pearl Jam: with the best singer, songriter and lyricist in history (plus an excellent band).. just don’t try comparing them with no one else. i don’t known if this year’s album is “their best since Vitalogy”, but is an outstanding record.. by the greatest band in rock.

2)Chilli Peppers: yeah, Frusciante is THE genious..but Kiedis is singing better every time, and composing really memorable choruses.. although not as good as their masterpiece (By the Way), Stadium Arcadium rocks, and has and incredible surfing feel..

    3) Strokes: although as a band they’re still far away from the previous two, they’re not a “one disc wonders”a some say, but im sure they will become really big, the next classic in american rock, as the awesome songriting and textures of First Impressions from Earth (best album of the year) show.

Notice how his last album before Living With War is called Prairie Wind? And he’s the only artist around to have enough balls to make an album full of such slander against your President. I find it even funnier that he’s a Canadian. Come on, stop being pussies and stand up for yourselves American song writers.

    DoobieBrother | 11/24/2006, 2:38 pm EST

I gotta go with the band that simply put, rocks like no other today….Pearl Jam.

    This year alone:

    -Opened For The Rolling Stones
    -Toured With Tom Petty
-Bono shows up to play with PJ at a few gigs
-Released a HELL of an album
-Toured extensively and will close it out with U2 in December

To put it mildly, Pearl Jam serves as a legacy to all things ROCK. If you haven’t experienced it, see a live show….the connection between 15,000 people and this ‘little band from Seattle’ is beyond amazing. I’ll even one-up all you guys…..check out this link and LISTEN to how much they mean to people around the United States. This was in San Diego back in July:

Tool lick sack. They haven’t made a good album since 1996. Same goes for Pearl Jam, and the Chili Peppers haven’t done anything worthwhile since . . . ever.

So my vote goes to TV on the Radio, who make everything else on this list sound irrelevant.

    Or it’s 1996 and I just don’t know it.

Out of that list I’d say Tool. Their last record was pretty good and blew away a lot of the other crap coming out. Next year Skinny Puppy should be at the top. In January 2007 they come out with their new Mythmaker record. Back when they made their 2004 album RS had a picture and about a sentence even talking about the band and didn’t even review their Greater Wrong of the Right album when it actually came out. Don’t make the same mistake again RS. Please at least review it.

Just cuz we don’t pull our cocks out and try to waive them in everyones face doesn’t mean we should kiss American’s ass. Don’t get me wromg, your country is great, but idiots like you give it a bad name. And Rollingstoned, all I’ve heard is that you and older dude who thought the early 90’s were a joke in rock music. You want a melody, go sing coombaya. And the British know whats goin on eh, unless ur talking about the band The Music, that comment just proved how ridiculous all you’ve said is.

    Dylan | 11/24/2006, 4:56 pm EST

The Strokes. Other acts on the list have had awesome years but The Strokes’ third album is awesome. They moved away from their bread and butter a bit and had some edgier material. It’s an underrated album.

    Gbag | 11/24/2006, 4:58 pm EST

Pearl Jam for sure. I saw them live 4 the first time 2 months ago and I was convinced that they are the greatest rock band on earth. The album is their best in years, listen 2 the ‘Inside Job’ and try to hold the tears….
And of course never forget the greatest musical genious that ever lived…PRINCE

    rollingstoned | 11/24/2006, 5:03 pm EST

I dunno, why should I have to go sing “Cumbaya”, there’s a tradition of melody in the Rock format, so why don’t bands start writing them instead? I don’t know when pounding your audience into submission became interpreted as Rock & Roll , but it’s not.

The Strokes write great melodies most of the time, it’s not all dour here in the US, but there’s no question the better records in this decade and in the 90s have come from the UK……and that doesn’t make me happy.

I’m an American. My favorite bands are American – Big Star & The Replacements. Wish things were better. Wish the 90s didn’t suck. Wish you’d stop using a different name every 15 seconds.

What’s with all the confusion as to who’e American and what not? As far as this post is concerened, their intended use of “America” is obviously meaning the U.S.A. It should be common knowledge that “America” is generally used as meaning that, despite it not being the full name of our country. And for those pointlessly arguing the point, of course Canadians are “Americans”, just not in the obvious sense that is being displayed. If we’re going to be stupid like that, then we’re all either North or South Americans over here. Don’t be an idiot people…you know what RS is asking.

As for my pick, I said it earlier, but I nominate the Strokes. While all are good, and vital in their own rights, the Strokes are the most interesting of the list currently and simply write the best songs.

    Chuck | 11/24/2006, 8:29 pm EST

P.s. though…. England and (gasp) Australia have it made as far as Rock n Roll goes…America has been a little sad as of late, and I actually blame that on fans rather than artists.

Some great bands, but Pearl Jam takes my vote with both arms raised in a “V”. They should be considered in everyone’s list of best bands of all time. The song writing and musicianship of the fivesome is amazing. These guys can also put on a great live show and don’t need fancy stage gimmicks to get an entire arena on their feet.

    Dazed | 11/24/2006, 11:01 pm EST

    RHCP are the best band around. Three reason why;

1 They are the best live, i’ve seen them twice and Pearl Jam is in no way close to them when it comes to their live shows. I’ve seen PJ live and although they were good, not as good as the Peppers.

2 Their musicianship. John Frusciante is one of the best guitar players around today. Anthony Kiedis has an amazing voice, far superior to Eddie Vedder’s. Flea, in my opinion has been the best bass player in the last 10 years, and Chad is the reason why I play drums today.

3 RHCP have put so many amazing albums. Not many bands can change their style of music with each different album, as much as they did, and carry it out successfully. In most cases, a band can loss a significant amount of fans by doing this. And in the Chilli Peppers case, well, I’ve been a fan of their music since I started high school, and they till remain my favorite band today.

    BK | 11/25/2006, 12:43 am EST

    Pearl Jam by “light years”!!!

I really like RHCP, but I no longer consider them as a true Rock band, but more of a Pop band. I still like them and respect them lots, but Pearl Jam to me is on a completely different level to all others by FAR.

Sort of like comparing the Four Seasons Hotel Chain to a Ritz Carlton chain… both are high end luxury hotels, and a couple Ritz Carlton properties here and there may be better than Four Seasons, but overall as a company globally, Ritz Carlton does not even come close to the Four Seasons in terms of true quality and consistency across the board….

I love Pearl Jam so much, and have for so long, I sometimes actually wonder how different my life would have been/would be now if Pearl Jam never existed.

They had such a huge impact on my life and still do. And the cool thing is now that as time goes by, I am earning more money which allows me travel further and more frequently to see them more often! 15 shows and counting… Envious of those who have seen PJ over a 100 times…

I LOVE PEARL JAM and to me they are the greatest by far.

I love MMJ and Dylan and RHCP, but I have to go with PEARL JAM. I was lucky enough to see them live in May, and I was blown away with how great their live show is. They have really improved as musicians and songwriters over the years. Their new album is fantastic. It’s a classic rock album that sounds fresh and exciting. I don’t think this band will be fully appreciated until years after they retire.

    James | 11/25/2006, 7:41 am EST

Pearl Jam. And by saying that isn’t to say the other groups are necissarily bad or anything, it’s just Pearl Jam had an amazingly dynamic year. A birlliant ablum that managed to reflect on a lot of contemporary issues followed up by yet another monster of tour. Given then times it only seems right that a band with influence relfect on them. Anyone who thinks Pearl Jam is just milking teen angst hasn’t been listening to them in a long time. On Riot Act they tried to reflect on a lot of contemporary issues but they kind of sounded like a band that just didn’t want to be in the game anymore. The self-titled album on the other sounds determined! Really it’s the culmination of a lot of previous attempts on things. I think they really got that sound of being right there in the studio nailed down finally. Lyricaly, Eddie managed to tackle some issues he’s been chipping at through all their albums. Unemployable i thought really got his point across on the problems of the middle class that he’s been hinting at for years. Gone seemed to be a great focus on his recurring theme of getting away. And I was really pleased with Big Wave that the guys managed to have some fun in the same vein as songs like Sping the Black Circle. And props on musicianship. Everyone always focuses on Eddie, but this album roars from the guitars of Stone and Mike and the rythem section of Matt and Jeff. The opening chords of Life Wasted absolutely floor you!
This is far from ‘arena rock’ like Nickleback because there’s actually something to be said on the album. Beck, Tool, Dylan, RHCP, are all really good, but it’s the sheer determination and fury that puts Pearl Jam over the edge this year.

    rollingstoned | 11/25/2006, 8:28 am EST

The reason people say they’re like Nickelback is because of the lack of “Pop” – no melody, no hooks, it’s all bludgeon the audience over the head and preach to them.

Pearl Jam may try to say more with their music , but they are really exhibit A in why if you take yourself seriously others will as well – regardless of whether you say it with any smarts or insight.

Why is “Unemployable” an insightful song? Because it addresses a serious social issue? Ok, fair enough – but it does it tunelessly.

They are the U2 of their generation.

    Not a compliment.

The type of social commentary PJ goes for nowadays almost never works in Rock music. The Clash pulled it off, in a different way the Kinks did…..other than that, not so much.

Money City Maniac | 11/25/2006, 10:52 am EST

No, people say they like Nickelback because they have poor taste in music. Canada has few good musicians, and Nickelback are not among them. Sloan kick their collective asses.
And I say it’s time we claim Neil Young as one of our own! I know he’s not an american citizen, but he’s lived here for decades. I know Jan doesn’t seem to think too much of him, but Ragged Glory rocks!

    Austin | 11/25/2006, 10:53 am EST

    Beck

    nwark | 11/25/2006, 11:06 am EST

In my opinion most of them are great records and the only two that stands out are RHCP and Bob Dylan… but not in a good way!

Very few can get away with realeasing 28 songs on one album and still keep the listeners attention throughout the entire album – and RHCP is DEFINITELY no exception.

Bob Dylans lyrics might make Modern Times worthy of a release but then it should have been as poetry. Don’t think it would have been on the list if it wasn’t for his outstanding career.

THe ones I like the most of the ten is Pearl Jam (great sound), Tool (intense listening-experience) and The Strokes (excellent songs).

    JR06 | 11/25/2006, 11:27 am EST

    1)The Strokes/Beck
-I haven’t traditionally been a Strokes fan but I am starting to get it. This CD is a bit long and a bit heavy for my tastes, but it has some good original stuff. Beck is still great. This album keeps me listening all the way through.

I see a lot of PJ votes. I also know how stupid it is to bash anothers take on what is good. I will say what ruined it for me was attending a live taping of PJ for a storytellers type show. They played some songs off the new album (that sounded off live) and what really hurt was how utterly stupid Eddie sounds when he tries to talk about things other than music. It was embarassing.

There are LOTS of Pearl Jam songs with humor, such as ‘Dirty Frank’, but you wouldnt know that because youre not even a Pearl Jam yet you continue to try to preach things about them that ARENT true & that you dont know about

Furthmore, Pearl Jam is about as far from “tuneless” as you can get – Even the song you used as an example, ‘Unemployable’, is catchy as hell.

It seems as though the REAL problem you have with them is – what you’re REALLY complaining about – is that Pearl Jam simply isn’t commercial enough for you

It’s like you’re complaining Pearl Jam doesn’t sound like Good Charlotte

Its ok rollingstoned… Pearl Jam’s music is just above your head & out of your league

    Try to cope with it.

    bloodzilla | 11/25/2006, 11:56 am EST

i can’t believe no one’s mentioned trail of dead’s so divided, yeah yeah yeahs’ show your bones, or deftones’ saturday night wrist. along with tvotr’s return to cookie mountain and tool’s 10,000 days, these were the top 5 albums of the year. beck and the strokes would probably take the number 6 and 7 spots, though.

    rollingstoned | 11/25/2006, 12:32 pm EST

I don’t want them to be Good Charlotte. I want them to write hooks. Don’t want them to be commercial. I want them to write hooks. I’ve heard every PJ record, trust me, I know what I’m criticising and I know why. And i want them to write hooks.

And as for not taking themselves too seriously. Riiiiiiight. Let me just end it with this :

Here are lyrics from “Unemployable” – these lyrics not only don’t belong in a Rock & Roll song, they don’t belong in a 14 year old girls journal of bad poetry. Pretentious twaddle. Oh look how deep he is !! Yawn.

“Well his wife and kids asleep but he’s still awake
and his brain weighs the curse of thirty bills unpaid
gets up, lights a cigarette, he’s grown to hate
thinking if he can’t sleep, how will he ever dream again?”

    Pearl Jam
I know they are up here a million times, but what a great album (the new one) and a legendary career. NO code is one of the greatest CD’s ever. Period. If you never got that one, stop what you are doing and drive straight to the record store and pick it up. No need to thank me.

    Neil Young's Pick | 11/25/2006, 1:38 pm EST

Pearl Jam, People! I’ve been saying it for the past 5 years these guys are the greatest American Rock band alive. It’s a shame that they lost some wagoneers around the time of No Code. That album helped to save me from giving in to loss and the personal trauma associated with it .

I don’t give in easily to a band and didn’t with them. They had to really earn my praise and in turn assured their place in my heart. I can’t imagine what rock would be without them. I love tha Chilis, but PJ finds ground and builds upward.

They have a catalog that has stood the test of time and they keep on going. I only wish that more people were in a place emotionally to appreciate No Code, Yield, Binaural, Riot Act, and not bow down to their latest or disapprove before exploring the previous.

I’ve read a dispute about “Unemployable” in this forum. Picking on Unemployable is like stepping on the pinky toe and criticizing how easily it fractured.

PJ has made 4 songs in their studio album history that can be considered weak. FOUR ! And one of them is Unemployable. Another is Evacuation. Not bad. I’ll take em’ and put em’ in my back pocket while I make my case for their place in American rock.

At the top ! Thank you Mike, Jeff, Stoney, Matt, and Ed. Thank you for not quitting too soon when time were tough. It can’t be said enough.

You dislike Pearl Jam, that’s your opinion…

Some people hate the Beatles, some people hate Bob Dylan…

    You hate Pearl Jam.

Some people think Bob Dylans lyrics werent all that good, some people think all Beatles songs sound the same…

And you think Pearl Jam can’t write hooks…

    Get the point yet?

Maybe the problem isn’t with Pearl Jam’s music… Afterall, how could it be when the majority of the votes here are for Pearl Jam…? Did you ever think that maybe, just maybe… You’re simply not intelligent enough or have enough good taste to like Pearl Jam? … Did you ever think the problem is YOU? not them?

Because it is – Just a little info. about yourself I thought you should know.

    Rollingstoned... | 11/25/2006, 2:09 pm EST

And as for taking themselves too seriously. Riiiiiiight. Let me just end it with this :

“Every beach has a clown who thinks he knows it all.
Hang-ten outta Santa Fe when surf comes out tomorrow lets go!
And he’s always practicing his cowabunga call.
    Cowabunga!”

    Oh yea… So serious.

    Fact is | 11/25/2006, 2:15 pm EST

    Pearl Jam are the Beatles/Floyd/Stones/Zeppelin

    - Whoever the best band of classic rock may of been – That’s what Pearl Jam is today to their generation & the next.

    Accept it.

    rollingstoned | 11/25/2006, 2:27 pm EST

First of all why not use a different name instead of mine with a capital letter? Lame.

Second, I like your crypto-fascist speak “Since the majority of people” like them ……um, you wouldn’t say that about Madonna probably. Or Mariah Carey I’m guessing.

I love when people use popularity as proof of something when it backs up their point – but not when it doesn’t.

And hey, i didn’t attack anybody personally for liking PJ – I just gave my opinion why i don’t think they’re any good.

So, I think you should extend the same courtesy.

Plus if anyone wants to say why they think Dylan’s lyrics are overrated I’m willing to listen…..I don’t get all sensitive when a musical act I like is criticized and start wigging out.

I think you may be too sensitive for message boards?

    HA | 11/25/2006, 2:32 pm EST

You can’t compare Pearl Jam to Mariah Carey or Madonna in that context – That makes no sense.

Pearl Jam are MUSICIANS (which Mariah & Madonna are not) who worked their way up & stayed together through countless amounts of bullsh*t

Mariah is ONE person, Madonna is ONE person… Pearl Jam are 5 different guys – For them to keep going is much harder than Madonna & Mariah.

Madonna & Mariah are blatant pop – DESIGNED specifically to appeal to the masses & write hit songs & stay away from anything risky – the exact opposite of Pearl Jam

You can’t compare them, it’s not just apples & oranges, its apples & elephants – They couldn’t be further apart.

You using that as an example shows just how dumb you truly are, no wonder you can’t connect to PJ.

Question to the editors of RS | 11/25/2006, 2:34 pm EST

Hey, im curious.. Since you c*cksucking editors at RS magazine go out of your way to not give Pearl Jam credit (not having the guitarists in the top 100 list, or PJ albums in the top 100, or PJ in the top 100 bands)

Will all these votes change your minds at all?

Its like Zeppelin vs. RS magazine all over again.

Don’t make the same mistake twice editors.

    to rollingstoned | 11/25/2006, 2:42 pm EST

I’ve reapetedly read that your complaint with PJ is that they are tuneless and don’t write hooks. That’s cool, your opinion. But please give me an example of what you think is tuneful then or a good hook. I am totally curious. Also, in terms of lyrics, listen to Come Back. No lyricist today could write those words and in the perspective he did, they are simply fanntastic.

By far, the best contemporary American band to release an
album in 2006 is The Mars Volta. Whether it be their creative,
clever, and criptic lyrics that disected the controling
ideology of religion to their innovative sound that combines
progressive riffs, Latin Salsa, Jazz, and Kid A-esque static,
TMV proves to be the most daring rock act around. Add to that
their intense stage presence and interactive live stage shows,
and we now have the new gods of cult experimental rock.

    Killian | 11/25/2006, 4:03 pm EST

Pearl Jam has such an impressive catalogue of music, and they really came full circle with their self-titled LP this year. I can imagine a lot of the songs fitting well with “Ten” and “Vs.” And I can imagine some of the songs being included in their “dark years” on albums like “Binaural” and “Riot Act.”

I think PJ finally found a comfortable place in rock music this year…a healthy blend of social criticism, humor, and showing up night after night to perform for loyal fans.

PJ’s new album provides good music that you can listen to at anytime: in your room, hanging out with friends, in your car, at a party, at a concert. And it covers a wide range of emotions, too.

I don’t think any of these other bands (except Dylan) have achieved that level of comfort and sense of placement within the rock community. The Chilis are close, but I think they are still trying to define their sound.

Greatest American band/artist this year: Pearl Jam.

    PEARL JAM

    Silk E Johnson | 11/25/2006, 4:48 pm EST

Beck and TV On the Radio made albums that blew my mind as far as making music that was creatively different and interesting. Especially TV on the Radio who make songs longer than six minutes that I can actually enjoy and listen to all the way through (one of the reasons Tool would not get my vote)

Dylan showed he can still write amazing songs, even if they are a little long. And it was good to see The Strokes grow up on “First Impressions of Earth”. Special kudos go to RHCP for making a double album that you can actually listen to without skipping half of the songs (take notice Foo Fighters and Ben Harper).

That brings me to Pearl Jam. While I really liked their album, I honestly don’t see why they’re so loved on this message board. Maybe it’s because I wasn’t old enough to appreciate them in their early years when they blew up huge, and I’ve never seen them live, which I suspect is a big part of the massive amount of love they get. It was a good album with good songs, but far from being good enough to qualify for American artist of the year.

So long story short my vote goes to TVOTR.

    CanadianBands? | 11/25/2006, 4:51 pm EST

Skinny Puppy is a Canadian band so I’m not sure if they can be on this one unless they’re talking about the American continent :)

Oh yeah and RS really should review the new SP in January and do an interview with Trent Reznor, Danny Carey from Tool, and some EBM musicans where they talk about how influential of a group they actually are. The NIN frontman already stated in Spin that he actually got a SP song and sped it up to create his original Down In It demo.

Speaking of Nine Inch Nails With Teeth was good also. I thought that was one of the best releases this year. Not as good as The Downward Spiral but still good.

Shit, I like most of the records mentioned. Why should we go hating on each other? Let’s be happy that the rock landscape seems to be in fine hands. I own most of the records suggested on the board, and they’re all valid records,

And to think, you could go out and see a handful of them together – the Chili’s and the Volta, PJ and MMJ/Sonic Youth/Kings of Leon, Bob and the Foo’s – We got spoiled again y’all.

    zero | 11/25/2006, 6:14 pm EST

Oh, and Pearl Jam get my vote

    Jazmin | 11/25/2006, 7:08 pm EST

I may be 20 years old but my vote goes for
Springsteen’s Seeger Sessions… yea sure they’re not “original” songs but hell they’re better than anything on the last Stroke’s album.

Mars Volta put out yet another fantastic album, glad they were mentioned.

    DS | 11/25/2006, 7:18 pm EST

Eagles of Death Metal – “Death by Sexy” is the best American band album of the year. Just listen to it and it will be obvious.

Since they are not on your top ten list, then it should go to the Chili Peppers because every song on their double album is at least good if not great. I personally like Pearl jam better, but as far as their 2006 albums go, the Chilis win.

The latest Peppers album was terrible.

    rollingstoned | 11/25/2006, 10:11 pm EST

As a reply to “Torollingstoned” – first thanks for asking about what I consider “tuneful” – I appreciate your asking and engaging in dialogue. This will be my last post since I think I’ve overstayed my welcome.

I had mentioned earlier, I think I’m older than most people posting. I’m 37. I grew up mostly influenced by 60s pop :

Beatles, Stones, early Who and early Kinks and Dylan in the 60s.
The Only Ones, Big Star and Ramones in the 70s. The Replacements and Stone Roses in the 80s.

I know the Who is maybe the biggest influence on PJ, but it’s the Who after I stop liking them. It’s the Who of the bombastic Rock operas not the Who of the exciting singles (”Substitute”, “I Can See For Miles”).

What really bothers me about PJ is that I feel they lack a lightness of touch in their songs. Instead of something sticking in my head naturally, I feel they force it on me.

Everything is up front with them. I think they write slogans where the choruses should be.

I don’t know where I fit in with PJ – they just seem to have an agenda in their music which they preach to an audience that already is converted, so there’s no room for surprise.

I just find the whole thing to be a drag. I find them the very opposite of what I consider to be Rock & Roll which at its best is a liberating music. To me, PJ is a constricting band. In the early 00’s I thought records like “Is This It” and “Up The Bracket” were the complete opposite of PJ – hedonistic joyful pop culture music. I loved both those records.
Again, I realize your mileage may vary.

I do respect the bond PJ have with their fans, and i think they’re a hard working and sincere band with honorable intentions.

Finally to the person who called me an idiot or something for mentioning Madonna and Mariah Carey – you missed the point entirely. Someone had thrown PJ’s popularity out as some sort of “proof” of artistic worth. I was merely saying you could use that argument with dozens of artists with no artistic worth.

Not sure how you could misinterpret that – it’s pretty obvious that popularity and artistic quality are indpendent of each other (yeah some great bands get popular, but they are not great because they’re popular).

    Cheers.

    Amphetadex | 11/25/2006, 11:17 pm EST

    Definitely motherfuckin’ Beck.

    hatersbeware | 11/25/2006, 11:33 pm EST

I have seen Tool, Rhcp, My morning jacket, the strokes, and the mars volta this year live in concert. The Chili Peppers by far were the best. I love all these muscians, but the Peppers write songs that touch so many different people, if you can’t find 10 peppers songs that you like, you are a weirdo.

    Super Genius | 11/25/2006, 11:54 pm EST

I think Pearl Jam are fairly entitled to win this round.
I would also encourage the posters on this thread to reduce your degredation of other users based on their place of origin, as that is raccist. Also, on a lighter note, we can all easily discount a post if it pathetically knocks down another band.

the problem is, is that it also seems as if sonic youth purposefully go out of their way to make music that isnt pleasant to listen to… isnt the whole idea of listening to music to be to enjoy yourself?

Pearl Jam have the qualities I listed above about sonic youth, except PJ know how to pull it off it an enjoyable way – something SY has always struggled with

Woah… comparing Bright Eyes to Bob Dylan? Except that, even though they’re both from the Midwest, and they both write lyrics, Dylan actually had talent at what he did.

I love pearl jam but i feel like most of the people who were like “hands down no question pearl jam”…haven’t heard any bands on the list besides them and rhcp. so much good music has come out this year (lots of it canadian actually…) but to say pearl jam is by far the best band is ridiculous. they’re awesome live but definantly past their prime. I have tons of respect for them but they’re songs are stylistically now a re-tread. mars volta and tv on the radio are pushing sounds to different places. the hold steady released a great album album also and are a great live act (i saw them last night). People…there is a world outside pearl jam and rhcp.

Uhh, the mars volta might be experimental or whatever, but their not good songwriters.

Pearl Jam don’t need to keep reinventing the wheel anymore than they have, they were revolutionary in the way bands like Mars Volta will never be.

I dont even like the RHCP. I own the latest TV on the Radio album, & the latest Beck album & the Band of Horses album.

I buy tons of indie albums every year…

Pearl Jam’s album was the best album of 2006. WITHOUT QUESTION.

    Ironic | 11/26/2006, 7:27 pm EST

It’s ironic how Pearl Jam is the greatest band, yet doesn’t get 1/100 of the credit they deserve, yet people call them overrated.

If Pearl Jam got 10 times more credit & if every album of theirs sold 50 million copies, they’d still be underrated.

quite a few of you really have no idea just how incredible they are.

    mimi | 11/26/2006, 7:50 pm EST

    Pearl Jam

    homer | 11/26/2006, 8:24 pm EST

Pearl Jam. always underrated but never underappreciated by their real fans. Good to see there are still so many fans out there.

    RHCP/Pearl Jam | 11/26/2006, 8:26 pm EST

Hands down RHCP or Pearl Jam. Both of the these albums are brilliantly done. Both of them are winners

    Doug | 11/26/2006, 8:33 pm EST

    Pearl Jam, no question…

    Ouroboros | 11/26/2006, 8:54 pm EST

    Alex | 11/26/2006, 9:13 pm EST

    Definitely TOOL

    robbiek | 11/26/2006, 9:21 pm EST

i gave my morning jacket my pick of best band at bonnaroo (over radiohead, beck, sonic youth). I saw them twice this month and they kicked ass. Hats off to them.

    sikisaga | 11/26/2006, 11:44 pm EST

    PJ atuh
one of seattle band who success in the world & still exist

    Evan | 11/26/2006, 11:49 pm EST

    Its Quite Simple.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers have without a doubt put out the best album so far.

Pearl Jam sounds just like they did in 91, and they’re still just a B-Side to any Nirvana CD.

    Hahahahahahhaahha | 11/27/2006, 12:21 am EST

Pearl Jam is just a B-side to any Nirvana CD? AHHAahahahahahahaha, oh please

the only way Cobain could compete with PJ is to kill himself.

the worst PJ album is about as good as the best Nirvana album.

    Hahahahahahhaahha | 11/27/2006, 12:22 am EST

and Pearl Jam sound nothing like they did in 91 you stupid cu*t, you wanna talk about bands that sound like they did in 91 as a bad thing, yet you name drop the RHCP

wow another song about california, yea thats not getting WAY old.

    Chad | 11/27/2006, 12:33 am EST

Personally I always viewed Nirvana as a band jealous because they knew Pearl Jam made better albums.

But this isn’t 91, this is 2006… And Pearl Jam is still the best band on earth, just like they’ve been for the past 15 years.

    R E Y T | 11/27/2006, 12:47 am EST

Nirvana are the best, I should know, I invented music.

    Daniel | 11/27/2006, 1:02 am EST

Nirvana aren’t even in the top 100 best bands ever.

    jon | 11/27/2006, 3:11 am EST

I’d have to go with RHCP or Tool, Beck’s up there too, but Pearl Jam new disc is just awful. Easily the worst of a string of bad ones. I used to follow them a little on tour, now I can’t even listen to them on the radio.

    What? | 11/27/2006, 3:28 am EST

You actually think Pearl Jam’s new album is awful but Tool’s new album is good? Are you joking? Tool’s new album flat-out sucks. It tries so hard to be overly experimental that it loses sight of any actual melody or good songwriting.

    What? | 11/27/2006, 3:29 am EST

Oh and by the way, if you can’t listen to Pearl Jam on the radio… It’s pretty obvious then you’re lying about hearing their album in the first place, dumbsh*t.

why would you listen to their album if you can’t listen to them on the radio? Just caught yourself in a lie, didn’t you?

    shadyal | 11/27/2006, 5:49 am EST

I just stumbled across this and was humored by “rollingstoned”’s comment about being 37 and old….this 53 y.o. fossill seconds his emotion!

    GARRRR!! | 11/27/2006, 6:37 am EST

    The Strokes !

    Jarrod Lowe | 11/27/2006, 6:56 am EST

Give Pearl Jam the kudos they so rightly deserve. Their self-titled album is a mighty return for a band who has never compromised, their world tour was (as usual) a triumph, and the single World Wide Suicide packs more of a punch than the combined output of any current mainstream band.

That, and it will redeem the music industry for Scott Stapp.

    matthew | 11/27/2006, 8:30 am EST

Pearl jam for sure. The strokes and Rhcp second and third.

    thesbaum | 11/27/2006, 8:47 am EST

my morning jacket for z, okonokos, bonnaroo, and a seemingly endless tour that even came through my little southern city and blew everyone away. these guys consistently play over two hours and make the floors shake. this has been the best year for them as a band and in my opinion better for them than for the other artists on this list.

    Sherry | 11/27/2006, 10:26 am EST

Bob Dylan, followed by Pearl Jam and then Beck.

    Jason | 11/27/2006, 10:30 am EST

5 Best American Bands (Neil Young is neither American or a Band and Bob Dylan is not a band and The Band are Canadian so none of these people can make the list)

    1. The Grateful Dead
    2. The Ramones
    3. The Talking Heads
    4. The Velvet Undergrount
    5. Nirvana

    Brian | 11/27/2006, 10:30 am EST

I think it’s fair to say Pearl Jam takes this one and that is great. They are the legends and deserve it.

    Provost99 | 11/27/2006, 10:41 am EST

The new Tool album was complete vile pretentious garbage. Anyone that would call that the best album of the year, or Tool the best American Rock band, needs to have their freaking head examined.

If you want Prog rock…take a listen to The Mars Volta.

And don’t even get me started on the two disc pile of pig vomit the RHCP put out. Can these losers be bigger sell outs ? Jesus Christ !! They suck !!

    Best American Bands

    1)Pearl Jam
    2)The Mars Volta
    3)Eagles of Death Metal
    4)Valient Thorr
    5)My Morning Jacket

Will everybody please get over My Morning Jacket, saw them recently and it was the biggest waste of $25 ever!!

They’re not that good, it was like a really bad Panic show- enough already!!!!!

    St. Robinson | 11/27/2006, 12:01 pm EST

From this list I’d say Chili Peppers, but I still think the best American band (yes, who put out a record THIS year) is Drive-by Truckers (”A Blessing and a Curse” came out in April and it rocks really hard). And I’m a little disappointed no one even mentioned The D.

    Geewiz | 11/27/2006, 12:18 pm EST

Man, where is Scissor Sisters at? They freaking know how to rock without coming off as full of themselves. And whats more, why do british people like them so much? If this same question was asked in UK, they would easily win…

My Morning Jacket is the best American band around right now. They’ve put out three great albums in a row and the live show is phenomenal.

    charliemapleton | 11/27/2006, 1:27 pm EST

    Van Halen
    Lynyrd Skynyrd

    Their just so cool!

    mike d | 11/27/2006, 6:51 pm EST

GNR could blow any of these bands off the stage. Too bad they dont have the new album out yet.

Pearl Jam vs. Guns N' Roses | 11/28/2006, 4:35 am EST

Guns N’ Roses were on top of the world until Pearl Jam DID blow them out of the water.

While Axl Rose has been trying to make a comeback album for 15 years, Pearl Jam has released masterpiece after masterpiece.

I don’t quite understand how people think not releasing anything is more impressive consistantly releasing amazing albums.

Not even I, the official baddest MOFO on earth, can beat Pearl Jam in 2006!

    cilcia | 11/28/2006, 9:29 am EST

PJ hands down. RHCP are great, but Pearl Jam simply set the bar too high for anyone else this year.

    Dirty Mosquito | 11/28/2006, 10:30 am EST

Pearl Jam by far. The greatest band on Earth. Clearly the best musicians of the list and best live act to date.

    John | 11/28/2006, 10:54 am EST

    Pearl Jam of course.

    Ryan | 11/28/2006, 11:06 am EST

I think Pearl Jam without a doubt.

    Boom | 11/28/2006, 11:13 am EST

    Pearl Jam.

Modern Times is good but pretty much a cover album. Amputechture has its moments but doesnt flow well at all and goes nowhere. PJ is consistently brilliant and another success for the greatest band in the world.

    Pearl Jam, BABY!

I would have to say Pearl Jam, a friend let me here it and it was awesome, Severed Hand and Marker in the Sand are beyond great songs. Never was a fan before, picked up all there albums and i cant believe i have never set my ears on vitalogy, might be the best album ever, well OK computer and Revolver have it by a whisker (p.s yield, no code, vs are also great, still not loving binaural or riot act and ten is ok)

    Keith | 12/4/2006, 4:57 pm EST

I love both PJ and the Chili Peppers. But Pearl Jam’s self-titled album doesn’t even come close to competing with Stadium Arcadium. We weren’t supposed to vote on a band’s lifetime work, were supposed to vote on which band had the best album in 2006.

    cuffit | 12/4/2006, 5:42 pm EST

absolutely pearl jam….with tool not to far behind

    Optimistic80 | 12/5/2006, 3:27 pm EST

My Morning Jacket’s album was released in 2005, or else I’d go with them. I’ll go with Pearl Jam or Built To Spill for 2006.

    Trent | 12/5/2006, 9:49 pm EST

    1. Pearl Jam
    2. My Morning Jacket
    3. Raconteurs
    4. Strokes
    5. Sonic Youth

I hate reading posts that diss other bands, but I like the Red Hots and I can’t even defend their last few albums. OK, you like California, we get it!
This was Pearl Jam’s best record since Vs. and MMJ is an insane band to watch as well.

THEY put out the best albums of the year

I did not vote but PJ is the best band in the world! RHCP and Tool are good but its impossible to try to compare them with PJ. They are legends. By the way MMJ are awesome i saw them opening for PJ and i liked them very much.

Pearl Jam, the best band ever.

    BooHooWaaaWaa | 1/8/2007, 11:06 pm EST

Pearl Jam is the most overrated off all the shit grunge bands.Only reason they got big was cause record company’s picked one city and gave every single shit band a contract no matter if they sucked, long as they wore flannels and sang sappy tunes that chicks would did. How else could a band that has the sound of a 70’s band and a singer who sounds like he has marbles in his mouth and no stage charisma get noticed?.They could have picked any city in the world and threw it in your face and you would buy it. Kurt Cobain was just as bad, “I’m Kurt and i like guys and heroine, please buy my record so i can buy a shotgun”.

    yomama | 8/22/2007, 9:38 pm EST

Tool = best american rock band since ‘92
