AMA’s Recap: Chili Peppers Win Big (In Absentia), Gwen Still Rules

11/22/06, 11:24 am EST

Leave it to Britney Spears who, with no particular project or album to speak of in 2006, manages to continually steal the spotlight everywhere she goes, whether it be the local Starbucks or the American Music Awards. And so it was at L.A.’s Shrine Auditorium last night that Brit decided to pop by for a quick curtsy, knocking Carmen Elektra and Chris Brown out of the R&B presenting spot while reaffirming her place — and those legs — in the world of entertainment. Still, not even Brit’s newly svelte figure could distract audience members from the evening’s main attraction: Um, music? In less than three hours, the AMAs managed to jam in performances by heavy hitters in every genre. Beyonce opened the show with “Irreplaceable,” leading the R&B pack (which included Mary J. Blige, Jamie Foxx and Lionel Richie). On the pop front, Gwen Stefani, who premiered her new single, “Wind it Up,” Nelly Furtado and Pussycat Dolls brought the sexy back, while rockers Fall Out Boy and Snow Patrol turned up the guitars. Rappers Jay-Z and Snoop Dogg showcased new tracks while Barry Manilow reworked some old ones. There was a little something for everybody.

The big winners, however, were not in attendance. Red Hot Chili Peppers, who won for favorite alternative artist and favorite pop/rock band, accepted their awards via satellite from London, with Flea beat-boxing over Anthony Keidis’ thank you speech. Kelly Clarkson, who won for pop/rock female and adult contemporary artist and Black Eyed Peas, who nabbed favorite rap/hip hop group, soul/rhythm & blues group as well as favorite rap/hip-hop album, did not make the broadcast at all.

Still, those who were there — Carrie Underwood, who won for Breakthrough Artist, Foxx, who was named favorite male soul/rhythm & blues artist, Blige (Favorite R&B/Soul album), Rascal Flats (Favorite Country Artist), Sean Paul (Reggae Album) and Nickelback (Pop/Rock Album) — seemed to revel in each other’s company. Said Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger, “I got to meet Lionel Richie! I was hanging out and shooting the shit with him, which was so cool!” And when it comes to the music? “In one night, you get a lot of performances from people you wouldn’t normally get to see and you have great fuckin seats!”

There was more to talk about than tunes backstage. For Foxx, the question of the day concerned actor Michael Richards’ recent Laugh Factory rant. “I’ve made comments like ‘I would have whooped him on sight,’” said Foxx. “But at the same time, it is sad to see a person build a career like that and have it torn down because of things he was going through. It’s tough to see him come out so ugly.” And for Underwood, it was Faith Hill’s look of shock over the American Idol winner’s Country Music Awards Female Vocalist win earlier this month. “I actually spoke to Faith immediately after the show was over,” Underwood explained. “She assured me she was just kidding and wanted to say she was sorry for anything that may have seemed inappropriate when it was just a joke gone bad.” As for performer John Mayer, his mind was still on the election. “I think everybody is excited to know it’s not locked in any one direction and that there’s nothing conspiratorial taking it to a certain side,” he said. “It’s nice to know it’s not rigged.”

We could say the same for the AMAs.

Rika | 12/4/2006, 4:50 pm EST

I am so happy the Red Hot Chili Peppers won. They are one of my favorite Los Angeles local bands. They have such great style and consistency throughout the years. Every time they put out a new record it really sounds new and well developed. This year they are also nominated by the People’s Choice Awards for Favorite Rock Song and for Favorite Group. I hope they win both categories. I work with the Peoples Choice Community so I already voted for them at http://www.pcavote.com . The People’s Choice Awards airs on January 9th on CBS. Though you can only vote till this Saturday Dec 10th, so hurry and Vote!!!!!

Anonymous 13 | 12/3/2006, 5:53 pm EST

Whatis up with Gwen Stefani? ‘wind it up’ is a horrible song. I like her better with No Doubt. The Pussycat Dolls should not have been nominated, and they shouldn’t even be cosidered as a group. It is really only one person singing. And as for all of you chili pepper haters, go screw yourself!

charliemapleton | 11/29/2006, 4:49 pm EST

Jigga made an inevitable return,Lionel Ritchie, had me mamboin’,and Beyonce?Priceless. So yeah,it was hot.New host next time!

Marie | 11/27/2006, 6:26 pm EST

I agree matthew, i will burn all of my RS magazines, and cancel my subscribtion if they put her on the cover, they really need to stop following the fads of the music, im very surprised they havent put fall out boy or any other emo bands on the cover. ((and dont do it!!!!)))

Amac | 11/27/2006, 1:04 pm EST

Mary J Blige was a gracious beautiful winner.. And one of the top performers of the night

matthew | 11/27/2006, 8:38 am EST

Gwen and Nelly are the worst.
What is going on with some people these days.If Rolling Stone puts Gwen ever back on the cover, there magazine should be shut down for good.

pete | 11/27/2006, 3:43 am EST

as usual, Snow Patrol is overlooked

Rob | 11/26/2006, 11:13 pm EST

Chili Peppers for the win…seeing them in January…what a glorious night it will be.

Laurens from Indonesia | 11/26/2006, 9:36 pm EST

The Chili Peppers rules!

ms. insightful | 11/26/2006, 8:04 pm EST

You know, reading these alternately piss me off and make me laugh, because you people actually have enough free time and energy to pick apart every minute detail, and beat the proverbial dead horse until the stuffing and thread are falling apart. Besides, every time every entertainer changes their image or sound, not everyone will like it! Duh! And it usually is just a transition. I mean, hello, David Bowie? Madonna? Cher?!

optimus prime | 11/26/2006, 5:36 pm EST

one good band in a national music awards show- the chilipeppers. What the hell does that say about societies present day genral tASTE IN MUSIC?

Anonymous | 11/26/2006, 4:50 pm EST

jjh

gwen sucks | 11/26/2006, 8:34 am EST

yeah why no bob dylan no tom waits no MUSIC!!!!! - things really have to change …

steveo | 11/25/2006, 10:13 pm EST

not much on that show for sure, & the gwen-bashing was justified..i’m sure rodgers & hammerstein are rolling in their graves over the lonely goatherd sample ;)

Tim | 11/25/2006, 8:33 pm EST

What did you think you were going to see. Not one good band in the bunch!

nick | 11/25/2006, 5:02 pm EST

the gwen performance was by far the worst performance i have ever seen. i normally do not comment but this was so horrible i was looking for spots to comment. i would have rather listened to rosanne barr sing another national anthem.

Marie | 11/25/2006, 2:03 pm EST

Uh,excuse me, Enigma? I’m only 13, and am not old, and I think that 70s,80s, and even 60s music is better than the crap they try and sell us each and everyday. so you know what? you sound like an ass, so its not just like “us old farts who think this music sucks” BECAUSE IT DOES!!! And if you want to make a thing about it, i surely hope that your response does not include “LOL@” in it.

Nmar | 11/25/2006, 1:22 pm EST

As someone who loves music, and I do love music. The popular music scene blows like a trombone. Let me explain why. HMMM, we have Justin with the number one album on the charts, (Make me puke!!!) I can’t think of a new album recently from the MTV crowd that has really gotten me excited. And to GGEFECT, how dare you insult Bob Dylan. Dylan is a master wordsmith, a great story teller and a musical legend. 40-50 years from now, Will we really be tunning up our oldies radio stations to listen to Justin Timberlake or Britney Spears? OOOOOOOO God help us. I miss the beginning of this decade when Creed was around. THAT BAND WAS THE LAST GREAT ROCK BAND!!!!!!!! Yeah Coldplay ain’t bad and DMB is fantastic. Why waste our time given recording time to Paris Hilton? I know people who have more talent in their left hand then she does in her whole body.

Huh? | 11/24/2006, 8:43 pm EST

I didn’t watch the show. However, I’ve seen the video for Gwen Stefani’s new song. The video and song are, of course, total garbage. Process the same beat you’ve heard in other Top 40 “songs,” sprinkle the beat with nonsensical lyrics, create a “sexy” promo video that will get the kids excited–and Presto! You have the “perfect” 21st century pop product. Boring? Well, yeah. But boring is what seems to sell these days. The ’80s may not have been the most creative decade for music; but, at least, it was interesting. I hear the nurses calling me, so I will bid adieu. Old farts need rest (and good music)!

CGEffect | 11/24/2006, 7:22 pm EST

Did Bob Dylan release his album too late to get nominated? If so, good. Hopefully tnest years AMAs will ignore the ablum’s “early” release enough to not have him nominated. Bob Dylan next to possibly My Chemical Romance next year for any awards is something I don’t want to see. I wish the Chilis were there just to not have Tenacious D be the only entertaining act.

danny D | 11/24/2006, 3:27 pm EST

even though i find it hard to say, tenacious D seemed like the only musical act that played with heart and were actually entertaining. I haven’t seen so many bland performances in a very long while. everyone except tenacious d and gwen. Gwen especially put on quite a show, considering the “quality” of th song.

Enigma | 11/24/2006, 12:44 pm EST

LOL@ you old people trying to retain your youth by comparing everything to 70’s and 80’s music. I’m sure ur parents thought your music sucked too.

when everything that comes out sound like ass= you are an old fart..dig a hole and bury yourself LOL

Jacob | 11/24/2006, 10:48 am EST

Yeah, the show was basically a joke. Gwen is a complete tool and a joke. That “wind it up” song shouldn’t even be called music. it should just be called “sounds with some talking and yodelling.” Jamie FOxx is a suprisingly good singer, and John Mayer was great. Snow Patrol was also very good. Other than that the show was a complete mess, and really showed how bad things have become. When people actually vote for the black eyed peas being good music…..we have a problem.

dogg | 11/24/2006, 8:50 am EST

they don’t make music like they used to.The awards were terrible. they need to meke songs like they did in the eighties. not this crap they’re singing today.

gabba gabba | 11/24/2006, 3:26 am EST

The red hot chili peppers are a joke, music for street vagrants. Anthony K. was looking really scroungy in that video feed, those guys seriously need to get off the tweak

Lori | 11/24/2006, 12:00 am EST

i think i just vomited my insides out..gwen stefani needs to go back to no doubt, nelly furtado is annoying…as is fergie…and nickleback IS NOT rocck..they are fucking country….!!

joomac | 11/23/2006, 8:48 pm EST

guys,, the chili peppers are amazing and im just po’d that they lost to some whiny girl rock band that was slapped togther over a couple of cosmos (nickleback)

gamerswife | 11/23/2006, 4:06 pm EST

Jello are you a complete idiot or just deaf? Gwen stefanis is not different or interesting she is cranking out the same crap fergie and nelly furtado is. STOP whisper rapping in songs and go back to singing. the problem is the gwen is actually talented - I agree w/Gobo Fango go back to No Doubt and stop embarrassing your band!

Anonymous | 11/23/2006, 1:02 pm EST

Oh yeah, one more thing Jello, I can’t guarantee, but I’m pretty sure Nelly Furtado’s microphone wasn’t even on during her performance. There was at least an “Ashley Simpson” backup track taking care of 80% of the performance.

Anonymous | 11/23/2006, 12:55 pm EST

Jello Jello Jello………cmon. no offense but you are probably 12 or 13. Same old music business? It’s a clown show! All music is these days is “who can be more interesting with their theatrics and side show dance and performance routines.” Its not about music anymore and Gwen’s performance is a perfect example and I think people are starting to notice. It’s kind of like when glam metal got so bloated in the late eighties till GNR came along. That is what is happening with the pop/hip-hop community and I think it’s goin to lead to its downfall. They say music goes in cycles…..I hope so.

duh | 11/23/2006, 12:34 pm EST

oh and fck u ppl, gwen stefani is hot

duh | 11/23/2006, 12:32 pm EST

its a music awards…music is broad people, u cant expect it play the songs u only like

SICKENED | 11/23/2006, 3:40 am EST

ALL PERFORMANCES OTHER THAN THAT OF THE D SUCKED AND SUCKED HARD, THE AMA’S OBVIOUSLY THINK WE ARE STUPID AND UNABLE TO DISCERN BETWEEN TRUE TALANT AND CRAP. THE PEPPERS ARE HAS BEENS AND GWEN IS BOOOORING

jackrocks | 11/22/2006, 11:34 pm EST

I am embarrassed after watching this bullshit on the AMAs. But, I think I might be more embarrassed that I PAY for a subscription to RS who says the night rocked. Are you kidding?

How do you get a performance slot on the AMAs and get off playing a cover song Rascal Flatts? You ruined that song.

Gwen, well I had more respect for you when you were writing about love, this crap: “they like they way we walk, we talk, our pants fit our shape”, well, hon that is completely useless bullshit. You’ve suddenly become Fergie who is just a hot body to bounce around the stage. BTW: How the hell did they win so many times?

Things I respect: Pearl Jam, Snow Patrol, Chili Peppers, John Mayer, Lionel Richie. At least we get real lyrics, real melodies, and real rhythm. And forgive me, but I always thought those things were the ingredients to real MUSIC.

I find it disgusting that the Pussycat Dolls are even recognized by the music industry.

And - whoever said that the music industry is run by 12 and 13 years old — CHEERS TO YOU. YOU’RE RIGHT.

X-tina | 11/22/2006, 11:02 pm EST

I thought Gwen’s performance was awful as well. She use to be fantastic with No Doubt and her first solo album had songs with MELODIES!!! I don’t know what she was on when she came up with that garbage, but I hope she gets off it soon.

As for the rest of the show it was pretty bland. Nobody’s performance was truly fantastic except for Tenacious D and they’re not even a real band. That’s a shame.

Gobo Fango | 11/22/2006, 10:12 pm EST

Gwen Stefani’s problem is that she listened to people who told her she should be a solo artist. Let me put it this way. Is Gwen Stefani talented?… Yes. Is she a solo artist?… No Paris Freakin’ Hilton could have made an album with the producers Gwen had on L.A.M.B. and it would have rocked (Oh my hell, I can’t believe I admitted that). Gwen Stefani has become a prime example of what happens when people believe the opinions of those who want to make money off them. Gwen, the only people who better be dancing around with you on stage next time better be Tony, Tom and Adrian. Listen to your fans. And stop embarrassing No Doubt.

Little PT | 11/22/2006, 8:41 pm EST

NO, Gwen Stefani was not “the” bomb, she was “a” bomb last night–a dirty bomb reeking of the utter banality of which seems to pass for popular music these days. Miss Furtado stunk it up, too, but I am less disappointed in her, because she never has displayed ANY talent before this, so why should she start now? But Gwen , while she was with No Doubt, had some good, listenable pop songs in the past, but her solo stuff is bringing her WAY down in the talent category. I hated the Sound of Music yodeling stuff in this “song” of hers, just like I hated the uninspired use of “If I was a rich girl” on her last solo album—YUCCCK!!! Though I did have fun laughing at the stupidity of it all- so I guess that’s somewhat of an entertainment value!

Scream | 11/22/2006, 8:19 pm EST

Stefani was terrible. Whatever that was she was doing shouldnt even be classified as music. Its just crap. I cant understand how RS could think she ‘rules’. Worst performance of the night by far.

Jello | 11/22/2006, 7:47 pm EST

Gwen Stefani was the bomb…simply put. She is something new and get this…INTERESTING in the same old music biz. The same goes for Nelly Furtado who comes off as being incredibly hot yet deep and provoking. Good Show!

STRATCAT | 11/22/2006, 7:41 pm EST

Rolling Stone is RIDICULOUS to think Gwen Stefani rules.
That song was a piece of garbage with no sound melody and with of all things yodeling.
What the heck is the problem with people that can’t see how low our standards have become that we think this is music of substance.
Whoever thinks Gwen rules should go listen to The Pretenders first self titled album and hear a REAL rock goddess who spins out great melodies and vocals instead of this TRIPE that Gwen is feeding to the masses and people like Rolling Stone are telling you that it’s something worthwhile.
What the heck is going on?
People go buy The Velvet Underground and Nico or The Beatles Revolver or The Stones Exile on Main Street or The Clash London Calling or Prince Sign of the times or Stevie Wonder Talking Book or Marvin Gaye What’s going on and wake yourself up out of this blanket of bull that they are trying to sell off to you as something great.
Stratcat

auramac | 11/22/2006, 6:31 pm EST

Come to think of it, I used to hate the Dixie Chicks, too- but their performance (and latest album) was both “musical” and moving. They’ve come a long way.

auramac | 11/22/2006, 6:27 pm EST

“Rock bias?” I don’t even know what he means by “rock,” or what they mean by “music.” Odd that the most electifying moments came from a guy I used to hate- Lionel Richie. Because there wasn’t a hell of a lot of good “music”- ‘rock’ or otherwise. Gwen Stefani is embarrassingly bad, but incredible to look at and watch, at least.

Ryan | 11/22/2006, 6:17 pm EST

For a minute there, I though that was Cher

Aries73 | 11/22/2006, 5:41 pm EST

People who post here give me good reason to grade music reviews on this site on a curve (I usually add 1 to 2 stars due to Rolling Stone’s pro-rock bias).

Why should I take seriously the opinions of people whose music IQ doesn’t even surpass room temperature when it comes to non-rock albums/artists?

I’ll ask again: What have any of the indie groups that you worship done that’s worth any space in my iPod?

Beelay | 11/22/2006, 5:26 pm EST

Ahh, what a wonderful show that was. I’m so glad that 12 and 13 year old girls can run the pop music industry…that’s the only reason the Pussycat Dolls even exist (I’m pretty sure they were manufactured at the same factory that makes rubber vomit and dog poo)

andrew | 11/22/2006, 4:05 pm EST

Man, it’s a relief to know that some people saw through the spectacle last night, it was for the most part not about music. Mikeky was right, Snow Patrol was the only sincere thing on the show. Would anyone else kill to see Tom Waits on the AMA’s?

Schultz | 11/22/2006, 2:59 pm EST

no matter where the peas are, they suck just as bad… unbelievable what passes for good music these days. I agree with RushFan that the American public would eat shit if someone told them it was good.

Fall Out Boy…pleeeeze - copping their name from the Simpsons was our first clue how bad this band was gonna be - they can’t even come up with a name on their own…

MEM | 11/22/2006, 2:35 pm EST

i was fliping in between this shit and The tony Bennett special, none gave me trills.

mikeky | 11/22/2006, 2:02 pm EST

i saw one really good performance: snow patrol. that’s pretty much it.

gwen stefani: HORRIBLE. how big was that shark she just jumped over? she was YODELING. for God’s sake.

pussycat dolls: why? WHY ARE THEY ALLOWED TO EVEN EXIST IN THE SAME UNIVERSE WITH THE CONCEPT OF MUSIC?

once again: snow patrol stole that hideous show. faint praise, i know.

lixibelle | 11/22/2006, 1:33 pm EST

*cough* the black eyed peas accepted their awards via satellite from costa rica. they even thanked the fans for listening to ‘conscious hip-hop.’

John | 11/22/2006, 1:21 pm EST

I don’t know whats more pathetic, this show or the fact that you people watched it.

Mike27 | 11/22/2006, 1:16 pm EST

After reading all these comments Im reminded of an old saying… opinions are like assholes - everybody has one and they all stink.

RushFan | 11/22/2006, 1:03 pm EST

Gwen’s performance proves to me that most people would eat a shit sandwich if it had dancing girls around it and someone famous told them it tasted good.

Brian | 11/22/2006, 12:55 pm EST

The whole show made me want to vomit. Pearl Jam loses best rock group to RHCP? Give me a break. The only things even somewhat worth mentioning were Snow Patrol and John Mayers performances.
I was hoping someone had the balls in the audience to grab Fall Out Boys instruments when they were doing their “oh so cool” run down the aisle and beat them within a inch of their life. I hate that band more than I hate Nickleback and Hinder put together and that’s pretty bad.

Ne-Gro | 11/22/2006, 12:38 pm EST

Rap is not music. Rap is ghetto poetry.

elfshu- | 11/22/2006, 12:28 pm EST

Ono | 11/22/2006, 12:07 pm EST

Mike, your right, but you forgot to mention these uh, bands. Fall-out Boy and Nickelback. Are you kidding me? How bad do these two bands suck? Very bad.

Johny Utah | 11/22/2006, 12:04 pm EST

One more thing that really is telling about the music industry today. Good ol Tyrese….complimenting Jay Z, The Game, etc about their record sales and then mentioning his own record and release date!!!!!!!!Shameless plug! Tenacious D is just one more example. Most, not all, of the artist out there need to rely on marketing and getting the word out about their record because their music won’t sell it for them.

Mike | 11/22/2006, 12:03 pm EST

The AMA’s seriously make me sick. That name is false advertising. What I saw on that show was not music. The was 1 and 1/2 goods bands represented the whole night. (Pearl Jam is the 1, Chili Peppers are the 1/2). How about the Pussycat Dolls? That’s music? I would rather eat shit then listen to that. Snoop Dogg is a joke. Jay-Z’s permformance reaffirmed just how musically untalented he is. Gwen Stephanie is a sell-out who went from a decent band in No Doubt to trying to be the next Brittney Spears or Christina Aguillera. Sickening.

Johny Utah | 11/22/2006, 11:52 am EST

There were some actual musical performances by people such as Snow Patrol, Lionel Ritchie, Mary J, Jamie Fox, and as much as I hate to say it…..the Dixie Chicks has a legit performance. The rest of the performers were more about theatrics than actual music.

–Jay Z? OK, let me just stand around, talk, and try and act cool, while everyone around me does all the dancing and playing. That guy is a clown.

–What happened to Gwen Stefani? I remember her being a legit frontman rocking out and caring about actual music. What was that!? I know..people clap just to clap, but CMON! What was that!? She hopped around making monkey sounds…..it was comical.

–pussycat dolls lip sang 75% of the song they “performed.” Did you notice at the end of the song, one of the dolls tried to say “Thank you” with her microphone but no sound came out! Pretty sure the same thing happened with Nelly Furtado.
