Today’s Releases Give Us Chart Palpitations … Get It?

11/21/06, 1:00 pm EST

Jay-Z, SnoopSo it’s finally here. The Super Tuesday of rock. Jay-Z and Snoop Dogg, obvious contenders for the Number One spot in any week, are both putting out albums today. So are U2, Oasis, Tom Waits and Tupac (err, sort of). Time to make a well-informed guess as to who will debut higher. Kinda like back when we were pulling for Dylan’s Modern Times to dethrone the Pussycat Dolls, except without an obvious favorite (and sans pouty Diddy-contrived dancing girls.) All the pennies in our desk are on Jay-Z. We hope Snoop surprises us, but when you stage retirement then play seven cities in seventeen hours and a badass jet is involved, that’s tough to trump. How do you think it’s all gonna shake out?

As for the dark horse factor? We’re not saying for certain that The dB’s & Friends extremely excellent Christmas Record, Christmas Time Again, is going to make a serious showing, but we’ve been hearing things. Seriously! Big Star’s version of “Jesus Christ” is totally going to be the song of the holiday season. Just watch.

Did you forget about DAUGHTRY???

JD | 11/22/2006, 12:20 am EST

Yet another album by 2Pac. Will it feature a recording of him brushing his teeth?

Well Jay Z will debut at *1 and fall quickly down the charts. The Beatles will be #2 and should be a big Xmas seller so it will stay top 10 a little bit longer. Snoop will come in third and will drop faster than Jay Z down the charts.

And U2 will be #4, and the most recent NOW album will be in #5. Sadly Oasis will probably debut at #18 or something.

cathy p. | 11/21/2006, 11:43 pm EST

Tom Waits all the way…but it won’t be reflected in chart sales-but that’s o.k.-He never needed the charts. Jay-Z-yeah, Show Me What Ya Got-those are GREAT lyrics, so are Snoop’s-we need more songs about weed.

idioteque | 11/21/2006, 9:14 pm EST

I have to give Snoop some respect. Nobody in history has been able to sell out to the corporate music-industry machine so thoroughly and yet remain as cool as he has.

In all seriousness though, I haven’t liked anything he’s done since Doggystyle.

scott | 11/21/2006, 8:39 pm EST

im surprised no one has mentioned that one of the few emo bands worth listening to, Brand New, is releasing an album today. Obviously (and unfortunately) it’s not going to chart higher than the rap albums mentioned, but I have a pretty big hunch it’ll be better. Oh, and just to clarify: emo, for the most part, sucks…Brand New is pretty good though.

ZEA | 11/21/2006, 7:32 pm EST

HELLO CHRIS DAUGHTRY
BEST ALBUM BY AN AI CONSTESTANT.

m | 11/21/2006, 6:50 pm EST

Jay-Z will probably be #1 and snoop will probably be right behind him with only a couple of thousand less albums sold. I think the Beatles and U2 will be a close 3 & 4. With Oasis & P.O.D. debuting in the top 20

layla | 11/21/2006, 6:14 pm EST

snoop dog is butt ugly
and why is he able to do crap others would be in jail for

Ken Vail Jr. | 11/21/2006, 5:25 pm EST

it has to be the beatles…come on! OF COURSE, all the lame-asses will buy that rap horseshit….i like some of it, but it’s not my bag, baby….

Reality Check | 11/21/2006, 5:25 pm EST

Has anyone done ANYTHING new and inventive in rap music in the past few years? The last umph of originality died out a few years ago. Then came the birth of Lil’ Jon and the like and it all just feels like a regurgitated product forced on the masses. There’s absolutely nothing artistic, just left over con artists trying to weasel a weak minded audience out of a few bucks. Hip-hop is really feeling a like a big lost opportunity.

Who will NOT be in the TOP TEN | 11/21/2006, 5:17 pm EST

OASIS ( #18 )
TOM WAITS ( # 37 )

Whathappenedtomusic? | 11/21/2006, 4:39 pm EST

Oasis should be #1, but they wont. Jay-z will top, Snoop will follow closely, the beatles album will fare much better then it deserves…sadly the best album of them all (Stop the Clocks), in America anyway, won’t top the charts.

bams | 11/21/2006, 4:32 pm EST

Incubus - Light Grenades
The Beatles - Love
Oasis - Stop The Clocks

are what i call MUSIC! buy their albums!=)

Mike | 11/21/2006, 4:18 pm EST

Does anyone seriously listen to Snoop Dogg? What uneducated fool would actually pay to listen to that? Well, at least the lyrics are good right. Murdering people, smoking weed, ho’s, jewelry. Good stuff.

The Oasis album will let the U.S. market realize that had more than ‘Wonderwall’ & ‘Champagne Supernova’. Check it out! Going to #1 in UK (over Beatles, U2 etc) The Beatles thing is for Cirque De Soleil….WTF??

Going to Hell | 11/21/2006, 3:29 pm EST

the orphans set by tom waits is on par with his career best. watch for him on the letterman on 11.27 and the daily show 11.28.

jimmy | 11/21/2006, 2:56 pm EST

This is the first oasis greatest hits album and it is f****** great

Vertigo | 11/21/2006, 2:47 pm EST

U2!

Hacbarton | 11/21/2006, 2:35 pm EST

I’m not too sure what is expected from this Beatles “LOVE” Album. What, some spacey versions of their chart toppers? Gee, can’t wait to hear a drug-friendly “Daytripper”
Jay-Z is struggling (that new single is too gaudy and he sounds to rusty in his songwriting), so I have my doubts
Snoop Dogg? The man has had one good song (”Drop It Like It’s Hot”) and it took him 10 years to make it.
Oasis and U2…”What are the two reasons rock music suffered after grunge, Alex?”

Scenic Anemia | 11/21/2006, 2:21 pm EST

The Jay-Z album is great, but he could lose the songs with Usher and Beyonce (even if he’s banging her).

The Beatles cd is better than most people would expect. Hearing “Within You Without You” over the music from “Tomorrow Never Knows” is reason enough to check it out. Not to mention the sound quality is out of this world compared to some of the studio albums.

It goes without saying that the Tom Waits box set is fucking gold.

Banjo | 11/21/2006, 2:15 pm EST

The Beatles “Love” is worth buying for the Lady Madonna track alone. at least download that one song.
Zachra: first Hendrix and now the beatles? i question your understanding of classic rock relevance.

Zachra | 11/21/2006, 2:10 pm EST

Jay-z should easily own this week. We finally get to know where his drama geek-rock allegiance lies. You’d think with all of the posing and primping with Fall Out Boy, the Wentz would get mention? Nope, My Chemical Romance seems to be on Jay’s mind and their new album “The Balck Parade”. Crown him King, the album is great, even though Usher is on it.

The Oasis and U2 releases are just more greatest hits packages that we don’t need.

That Beatles disc is borderline greatest hits/crappola bin territory. No matter if they are my favorite group of all time, another repackaged hits collection is unacceptable.

Tom Waits’ “Orphans” is my Album of the Year, right in front of the Hold Steady’s “Boys and Girls in America”. Do yourself a favor and invest the $40-$50 and pick up Waits’ latest.

Anonymous | 11/21/2006, 2:10 pm EST

the Jay-Z album is NOT GOOD!!!! i ituned it and have listened to it several times…..don’t fall into the hype!!!!!! OVERRATED! he will never reclaim his reasonable doubt/blueprint/in my lifetime glory….

Lobsters | 11/21/2006, 2:06 pm EST

You heard it here, folks - Big Star’s “Jesus Christ” is a great Christmas song.
Rolling Stone - Totally on the edge!

DJSO | 11/21/2006, 2:05 pm EST

I think Jay-Z is gonna take the top spot. As much as I love U2, their CD is only a greatest this, which U2 already has 2 others. The Beatles CD I think is also a retrospective CD, so I’ll count that out. Jay-Z is definatly the king of the music industry right now.

beelzebub | 11/21/2006, 2:00 pm EST

Hell hath frozen over

Kliffee | 11/21/2006, 1:44 pm EST

The Super Tuesday of Rock is Rap?!!
Have you totally lost your mind?

saylor828 | 11/21/2006, 1:43 pm EST

Seriously, how did you neglect to mention the Beatles album - I never imagined being alive when a George Martin produced Beatles album project came out and can imagine that most of you who work there were either very young or not even alive to experience the releases of their numerous epic albums. This is Rolling Stone, right?

Westwood | 11/21/2006, 1:36 pm EST

…it´s just THE BEATLES guys!!!!

Hey MORONS... | 11/21/2006, 1:29 pm EST

you forgot THE BEATLES ‘LOVE’ CD!
