Playlist of the Day: Help With Kramer’s Mea Culpa Soundtrack

11/21/06, 8:20 am EST

kramer michael richards

Comedian Michael Richards (a.k.a. Kramer from Seinfeld) spewed racial slurs onstage over the weekend, inspiring us to create a White Guilt playlist. Shame on you, Kramer.

  • “Kill All the White Man,” NOFX
  • “Ego Trip,” De La Soul
  • “Racist Friend,” The Special A.K.A.
  • “Stand Up Comic,” Ray Davies
  • “It’s Not Funny,” Run-D.M.C.

I have an idea, why not eliminate all racial humor? Would some comics still have a career? One size fits all.

Kliffee | 11/21/2006, 10:21 am EST

Ain’t That A Shame?

boo boo | 11/21/2006, 10:30 am EST

he sure tripped over his dick!!!

maybe he was struck with penis envy!!!

MMW | 11/21/2006, 10:47 am EST

Would this have even made headlines if chris rock said this to some white guys? no, so let it go.

Kliffee | 11/21/2006, 10:53 am EST

What he said was crazy but he was saying it to ignorant, rude jerks.
He wasn’t attacking someone for being black. he was attacking a**holes. but he should have been prepared to be heckled.

Nate Kelley | 11/21/2006, 10:59 am EST

Yeah, really! What’s with the double standard? We’re all big boys. Don’t dish it if you can’t take it!

Mr. Vorhias | 11/21/2006, 11:02 am EST

Might I suggest “Your Racist Friend” by They Might Be Giants?

matt | 11/21/2006, 11:07 am EST

Kliffee- He called the hecklers the n word, that’s attacking someone for being black. Richards could have called them assholes or jerks, but spewing racial slurs is far different. Then he kept repeating the word loudly with anger.

MMW- Chris Rock is probably one of the best stand up comics ever. He is certainly edgy, and uses race in his material. However, his work has a high level of social commentary and sincerity to it. Simply put, Rock is a smart comedian. What Richards did had no comedic merit. There’s a huge difference.

I’m sorry, but there is a difference between an african-american and a n*****. Those “hecklers” were the latter and I think (in some f’ed up way) that’s what he was getting when he was pointing and calling them out. Yes, I am white….

Pope Judas I | 11/21/2006, 11:59 am EST

I agree.
Like George Carlin said “It’s all about context.”

Words We Never Use-Ron Sexsmith

Whitey on The Moon-Gil Scot-Heron
Eternal Life-Jeff Buckley
Here’s to the Losers-Frank Sinatra
Wrong Nigga to Fuck Wit-Ice Cube
& Just about all of Public Enemy’s library
what a sad, pathetic rant. Mr. Richards makes Mel Gibson look like Mr. Rogers.

DonkeyTron | 11/21/2006, 12:16 pm EST

The Devil Made Me Do It – Paris
I Don’t Wanna Be Called Yo Nigga’- Public Enemy
Stand Up – Minor Threat
and finally..
All Apologies – Nirvana

Sad, sad man.

R&R Girl | 11/21/2006, 12:18 pm EST

The argument that ‘if Michael Richards was black, his comments wouldn’t matter’ is dead-on accurate…in the same way, I can bitch and whine about my family but don’t you dare say a word about them.

The use of the “N” word is acceptable among the black population and it is offensive for another race to use it against them. While some might argue that that in itself is discriminatory, it is a cultural difference. Cultural differences should be accepted for what they are-there is no approval process by outside parties.

Jason Barrett | 11/21/2006, 12:54 pm EST

Stop trying to excuse Richards comments with irrational hypotheticals. And, no, it would not be acceptable if Chris Rock personally attacked an individual’s race outside his comedic act. If you cannot discern the difference in context, please stop reproducing. There’s no double standard here. After all, non-Blacks have racial jokes in their acts all the time, e.g. Sarah Silverman, Carlos Mencia, Robin Williams, Pablo Francisco, Bill Maher, Adam Corolla, Margaret Cho, Carrot Top, etc. But, it’s acceptable similar to Chris Rock’s material because it’s an act.

The difference between Michael Richards and these individuals is intent. Richards said these words out of hate.

Ty Girl | 11/21/2006, 1:09 pm EST

This is something this ignorant a**hole wanted to say all along, just so happen he got his chance to use the n**** word(He thought he would be excused this time. NOT!!!) If your game is no good, “Be aware hecklers are always on top of their game!”

Conrad | 11/21/2006, 1:25 pm EST

Richard Pryor and Chris Rock Attacked white people everyday with their acts. I KNOW its not the sam ebut he should get a second chance. his apology was heartfelt

i love that we live in a country where Kramer can say “Nigger” about 15 times out of anger, and people sympathize with his bullshit apology on letterman, but Mel Gibson claiming jews start all the wars is outrageous and unforgiveable. What does that say about racism in this country? Are Jews better than blacks? Is nigger an acceptable word?

Don’t Call me Nigger, Whitey – Sly and the Family Stone

I can’t believe this one was overlooked

Celebrity meltdowns??? Drugs?? | 11/21/2006, 3:25 pm EST

Why do so many celebrities have such dramatic meltdowns? Here’s my theory.

I think the problem is drugs… but not the illegal kind. I’m talking about medically prescribed antidepressant & anti-psychotic drugs.

People are popping these pills like crazy, especially artistic people, who are known for their sensitivity. If you watch closely, you can see the little warning signs of somebody on meds: rapid weight gain, rapid aging, heavy breathing, memory problems, slurred speech. Britney was obviously on them when she married Fed-Ex. Richards looks like he’s on them now.

When I took them I had crazy outbursts of rage and hyper-emotion, and I acted irrationally. It felt like I could just SN-*-AP at any minute. It was even worse when I tried to get off the pills. They said there were no addict qualities until I tried to quit cold-turkey, and then they said you can’t.

The problem is that there is still a lot we don’t know about the brain, and messing with your brain chemistry could have some very serious long-term risks and side-effects.

Richards probably missed a dose or mixed with alcohol or coke before the show. He should get off the drugs, but he’ll probably end up taking more. He’ll be dead in 10 years.

Boner | 11/21/2006, 3:30 pm EST

Yeah, people should just smoke weed.

Jason Barrett | 11/21/2006, 3:38 pm EST

For those trying to excuse Michael Richards’ hate rant by saying other comedians use racial jokes as well, you are pretty much dense. It’s about context and intent. Richards was not telling a joke; those hate words are not part of his act. He meant them for reals.

Angel | 11/21/2006, 3:46 pm EST

“Somebody Kill Me Please” Adam Sandler. Michael Richards says “I’m not racist, that’s what’s so insane.” Yeah, right. I don’t consider myself racist, either, but if somebody pisses me off, I think of them as an asshole. I don’t immediately reference their race in a hostile and offensive way. You know why? True non-racists don’t think about the race of the person in front of them, they think of the person. Everybody judges and says shameful things from time to time, but don’t give me “I’m not a racist” when you get your panties in a bunch and start flying loose with the word nigger. That’s fucked up.

C.H | 11/21/2006, 3:53 pm EST

I think whoever think it is OK for Kramers comments are assholes, to Kliffee if he was addressing stupid jerks then that’s what he should have called them and kept the n-word to him self if I was the hecklers I would have broke him off something proper to roy you are a royal JACK-ASS you ignorant fool!!

What’s up with the Jew vs Black thing?, The Jew vs Palestinian thing? The Arab vs Jew thing? Christian vs Jew, Black vs White, Republican vs Democrat, and so on, and…..
I don’t know, but I’m sick of the whole unforgiving, mean spirited, holier than thou, hate-filled hostility that some people are filled with. If there is any justice, those haters among us will have their day, and peace will only be real when these haters truly heal.

i’m not going to lie- i’m not really all that insulted if anyone calls me a cracker. it’s just the least effective and conventional racial slur ever.

Judas | 11/21/2006, 6:00 pm EST

If you had the history of slavery, oppression, were the target of hatred, fear, bigotry, I have a feeling you’d be pretty pissed if someone were rubbing it in your face.

racism is funny. black comics dont get flack for ripping on white people, but if a white man rips on a black person than its supposed to ruin his career. suck it up african americans we let oj get away for you

Anon | 11/22/2006, 10:48 pm EST

There’s a BIG difference between noting cultural differences and spewing racial slurs at people because they don’t like your sucky comedy act. If Kramer were actually funny, this wouldn’t be a problem. R.I.P. Kramer’s career.

shifty | 11/23/2006, 7:05 am EST

It appeared as though Richards began his tirade, then realized what he had done and tried to back-pedal. His attempt at turning his rage into a social commentary on the power we give words was awkward and amaturish. Hey Michael, you will never be George Carlin or Lenny Bruce. They are the only whites who could talk so frankly and be non-offensive.

Mandela | 11/23/2006, 8:28 am EST

White people just get use to it, we’re now the single most opressed people in this country, which is odd since we’re the majority… and yes we are the most, because no other race or sex can be sued for just about anything he does and have someone twist it into some racist, or sexist thing. if i started an exclusively white magazine called blonde hair there’d be an outrage, i f i started a channel called white entertainment tv i’d be sued and so n and so on and so on.

A black calling me a “cracker” isn’t offensive, because it’s not backed by 400 years of getting shit upon by people with his skin color. But, ironically as Michael Richards pointed out, things are getting better.
