Lunchtime Poll: What’s Playing at the Pearly Gates?

11/21/06, 11:13 am EST

Biggie

If the world was going to end in three minutes (and it might, so think carefully,) what song would you want playing as you prepared to meet Biggie?

I wouldn’t care what song they played, as long as I had my girl in my arms, whoever she may be at that moment – how’s that for lame? But seriously, if I had to pick, it would be something either totally in-your-face dashing like Hendrix’ ‘Bold as Love,’ or something smooth and calming, yet quietly indignant, like John Mayer’s ‘Vultures.’

First off…right on, Mad Ferret (towards the bottom).

But, I’d like to think that heaven has changed a lot. The last time we got a real “hands-on” description of heaven was through the book of Revelation. So, I think that heaven will have loosened up and I imagine Iron Maiden’s “Number of the Beast” through supernatural Bose speakers and angels clad in leather carrying whips leading you in. Is the sun melting or is that just me?

I do not believe that no one has said this one, It seems so obvious:
End of the World As We KNow it by REM or Great Big Sea. If I wanted to go out in a blast of Happyness I would pick:

El Scorcho by Weezer
High on Life By Rasputina or
Sober by Tool

Mike | 11/21/2006, 4:56 pm EST

It may sound like a cliche…but if the world is about to end and you’re saying your last goodbyes…it’s gotta be “Freebird”.

Amanda | 11/21/2006, 4:58 pm EST

Comfortably Numb – Pink Floyd
seems appropriate

KMan | 11/21/2006, 5:03 pm EST

Rolling Stones “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”. May be cliche, but the choir outro would be a fitting way to go out.

I’m sorry…but the end of world can only be portrayed by the song “Keasby Nights” by Catch 22

“When they come for me, I’ll be sitting at my desk with a gun in my hand wearing a bullet-proof vest singing ‘My, my, my how the time does fly when you know you’re gonna die by the end of the night’…said hey!”

brian | 11/21/2006, 5:38 pm EST

“I Am the Resurrection” by the Stone Roses.

And for those going to spend an eternity in hell listening to bad music –”fade to black” by Metallica. You may as well spend your last three minutes on Earth listening to a shitty song by a shitty band. You know you deserve it!

J-Roo | 11/21/2006, 5:42 pm EST

‘God Only Knows’ by the Beach Boys (no attempt at irony there… just cause it’s gorgeous).

However, if it’s irony you crave, I’ll take all 2:59 of ‘God’s Away on Business’ by Tom Waits, with a second left to chuckle.

Santiago | 11/22/2006, 11:08 am EST

If it ends abruptly after three minutes, I’d play that single version of “Pigs On The Wing” by Pink Floyd, which had both parts of the song glued by a beautiful solo and it ends on a note of hope. Sadly, it lasts 3:26, but whatever.
If the whole thing ends with some sort of fade-out, giving me the chance to listen something on my way to heaven (or hell, whatever!), it’d be “I Talk To The Wind” by King Crimson, it’s simply lovely and to listen those flute solos while I’m on my way would be perfect.
Other nice choices:
“Aisle Of Plenty” (1:31) and “Horizons” (1:42) by Genesis
“Mood For A Day” (3:02) by Yes
I’d listen to them all, they’re great finales..

Santiago | 11/22/2006, 11:15 am EST

I also liked that idea of listening to “Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others”.. Great pick!

Santiago | 11/22/2006, 11:18 am EST

Last comment… I guess an even better pick would be Pescado Rabioso’s “Por”… The guy just plays the guitar and sings seemingly random words (”tree leaf jump light”). It’s just utterly unexplainable, as well as beautiful… And it even lasts 1:39, so you have some extra time to do whatever you want.
