AMA’s: Nubile Studmuffin or Lame Hanger-On?

11/21/06, 4:55 pm EST

Let’s pretend for the sake of this blog post that music awards shows are one big family. There is, of course, the Grammy’s — the Mother of All Music Awards. Polished, sophisticated, respectable, but stuffy and out of touch in its dotage. The MTV Awards are the equivalent of aging hippie child — a gig that used to stand for something before it got too rich and lazy to remember what. And then there’s the American Music Awards — for years the quiet, nerdy kid brother content to relax in the shadow of its flashier older sibling. But in the last couple years the AMAs have been going through a public and awkward puberty. (Anyone remember the Anna Nicole debacle of ‘04?) This year they’re emerging with every intention of securing their status as the ugly duckling-turned-sexy-swan. Just like your neighbor’s little brother who graduated from smelly pipsqueak to stone-cold fox in one summer, the AMAs have been secretly growing their stubble, and lo and behold! Now they’re downright scruffy. Mark our words, this year is a monumental one for our sweet little AMAs: Hova, who just today released his much bandied-about comeback album Kingdom Come, will open the show. Credible tween favorites Fall Out Boy will perform their brand new single, “This Ain’t a Scene, It’s an Arms Race,” for the very first time. And a who’s who of mainstream hotshots from Gwen Stefani to Beyonce to Snoop Dogg clog the bill. The moment of reckoning is upon us. Tune in to ABC tonight at 8:00 EST and tell us if the AMAs live up to the hype.

the AMAs always suck, the only good thing about it is jimmy kimmel. the show usually has crappy artists, they’ve never had colplay or the killers or the strokes. snow patrol was on this year but its just because of greys anatomy, the AMAs are for media whores.

Besides the Dixie Chicks and John Mayer everything else was not very good…maybe Carrie Underwood should also be included in the great and good..and the winners were terrible RASCAL FLATTS??? YUCK

It would be a miracle if that dweeb Wentz could keep his mouth closed for a singe picture - but after sucking so much dick to get where he is I guess old habits die hard…

The AMAs sucked this year. Crappy award winners…although Red Hot Chili Peppers won 2, which they were about the only ones who deserved anything. Crappier guests ((high school music cast??)). And finally the crapiest singers ever. The part about kevin federline ((I refuse to capitalize his name or refer to him as is “rapper” name)) was funny.

I’m not a huge country music fan, but I thought Carrie Underwood did a really good job performing. And Britney looked great.

the show sucked. Can we book people who know how to sing?

Come on, they just toss out crap and expect people to buy it. Popular music sucks.

Where was the real talent? where was Sufjan, Damien Rice, and so on? Good artists get passed by crappy ones who are marketed well.

Yeah a new single from FOB, that sounds like their practice room was a bit too close to panic at the disco’s if ya know what I mean.

Why is that douche from FFOB always making the same face?

lixibelle | 11/21/2006, 11:56 pm EST

what on earth is a ‘credible teen favorite’? is that code for ‘we can’t make fun of them because they’re going to be on the cover in a few weeks’?

ZipZapZopZoup | 11/21/2006, 7:25 pm EST

Zing!

Rolling Stone’s description of the MTV awards are spot on. I guess it really does take one to know one.
