Lunchtime Poll: Which Is the Best Bond Theme of Them All?

11/17/06, 11:21 am EST

James Bond

We are personally counting the hours until we can go check out Casino Royale (9 hours 43 minutes). In the meantime we’re torn between Shirley Bassey’s “Goldfinger” and Nancy Sinatra’s “You Only Live Twice.” What’s your favorite Bond theme song?

Gotta be Live and Let Die.

Donald Gibson | 11/17/2006, 11:48 am EST

Live and Let Die

Whateva | 11/17/2006, 11:51 am EST

Madonna “Die Another Day”

Just kidding! It’s “Live and Let Die”

Oddjob | 11/17/2006, 11:54 am EST

Clearly Live and Let Die.

RTP | 11/17/2006, 11:59 am EST

Gotta dock half a grade from “Live and Let Die” for the idiotic line “this ever changing world in which we live in”. Plus, Macca’s no Shirley Bassey. It’s gotta be “Goldfinger”.

Chris | 11/17/2006, 12:23 pm EST

“View to a Kill”, Duran Duran

marty | 11/17/2006, 12:25 pm EST

Gotta go with Goldfinger, but in Macca’s defense, he claims that the line is “ever changing world in which we’re living”.

skerr | 11/17/2006, 12:26 pm EST

Live and Let Die without question. This isn’t even a debate.

Willard | 11/17/2006, 12:30 pm EST

DUDE! Carly Simon– “Nobody Does it Better”

As Thom Yorke said “It’s the sexiest song that was ever written.” I agree.

chris | 11/17/2006, 12:39 pm EST

This is tough. I’d say Goldfinger, but A View to a Kill was damn good too.

L-dog | 11/17/2006, 12:46 pm EST

I’d have to say a tie between Live and Let Die and Goldfinger

marnr67 | 11/17/2006, 12:47 pm EST

My favorites

well i think the original theme from Dr. No (which is just the james bond theme by Monty Norman) kind’ve reigns supreme.

i dig the following tho:
Shirley Bassey- “Diamonds are Forever”
Macca and Wings- “Live and Let Die”
Carly Simon- “Nobody Does it Better”
Sheryl Crow- “Tomorrow Never Dies”

Martin Farr | 11/17/2006, 12:48 pm EST

Obviously Macca, with Carly Simon (or, rather, Marvin Hamlisch), second.

Mike | 11/17/2006, 12:49 pm EST

Dude….”View to a Kill” Duran Duran for sure.

“Live and Let Die” is a distant 2nd. Maybe not even 2nd…cuz “For Your Eyes Only” by Sheena Easton whips ass too!…that’s right, I said it!

Me | 11/17/2006, 12:50 pm EST

I like “Die Another Day”. So, there.

Guido | 11/17/2006, 12:51 pm EST

RS is usually pretty lame on picks, but this time I think they got it right: Shirley B. with “Goldfinger”, but Nancy S.’s is quite good, too; her voice is just too weak. Let’s not forget the first Casino Royale theme. Yes, it was by Herb Alpert, but remember that the movie was a comedy.

Hopster | 11/17/2006, 12:54 pm EST

There are many excellent Bond themes, but “Live and Let Die” ROCKS! Runners-up include “A View To A Kill,” “Nobody Does It Better,” “Goldfinger,” “Diamonds Are Forever,” and “The Man With The Golden Gun” (which was sung by Lulu, best known for another theme, “To Sir, With Love”).

Aaron D. | 11/17/2006, 12:56 pm EST

First, nothing tops the original theme. It’s one of the downright coolest pieces of music ever conceived.

As for themes, Tina Turner’s “Goldeneye” is pretty underrated, but ultimately I’d go with Carly Simon or Shirley Bassey.

Oddjob | 11/17/2006, 1:06 pm EST

RTP: I think it’s “if this ever-changing world in which we’re living”

Refurb Beatle | 11/17/2006, 1:06 pm EST

live and let die

Bill F | 11/17/2006, 1:12 pm EST

Rita Coolidge’s ALL TIME HIGH
from Octopussy, which incidentally was Roger Moore’s best.

Do your homework | 11/17/2006, 1:18 pm EST

A young Tom Jones: “Thunderball”
Also “The Man with the Golden Gun” by Lulu is pretty rad.

Guns n Roses ruined “Live and Let Die” forever.

Rick | 11/17/2006, 1:19 pm EST

Live and Let Die, by far! Nothing else comes close.

Timroc | 11/17/2006, 1:23 pm EST

YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE….It is the cascading sound of the music itself. Hypnotic. For some reason, I think Moby sampled it once to great effect. 2nd runner up LIVE & LET DIE, 3rd runner up NOBODY DOES IT BETTER. These three songs are IT, in a big way.

Michele | 11/17/2006, 1:33 pm EST

Sort of in order….

Live and Let Die
Goldfinger
Diamonds are Forever
Nobody Does it Better

E.Bernshaw | 11/17/2006, 1:38 pm EST

Does everyone overlook Tina Turner’s “GoldenEye”? At least her music video of this song is ‘the best!’

mandy lou | 11/17/2006, 1:39 pm EST

well i LOVE them all but i would have to say that “the world is not enough” by garbage is pretty awesome

Esben | 11/17/2006, 1:50 pm EST

Goldfinger, hands down.

JJJ | 11/17/2006, 1:52 pm EST

Goldfinger may be the ultimate Bond song, but You Only Live Twice & We Have All The Time in the World (from On Her Majesty’s Secret Service) have the most gorgeous melodies. John Barry was the perfect Bond composer.

Dave | 11/17/2006, 2:00 pm EST

GoldenEye, by Tina Turner, and composed by Bono and The Edge is tops for me. Live and Let Die is 2nd, View to a Kill is 3rd.

Now, which is the WORST Bond Theme?

Melissa | 11/17/2006, 2:04 pm EST

Duran Duran “A View to a Kill”

lg | 11/17/2006, 2:09 pm EST

live and let die

Zach | 11/17/2006, 2:24 pm EST

As already noted, Thom Yorke thinks “Nobody Does It Better” is the sexiest song ever written, and I agree entirely. But man… it’s hard to beat a Shirley Bassey theme.

Maritza | 11/17/2006, 2:28 pm EST

A view to a kill (Duran Duran)
vs Nobody does it better
(Carly Simon)

Love cup | 11/17/2006, 2:43 pm EST

Monkey in a basket or Live and let die.

armand | 11/17/2006, 2:45 pm EST

You Know My Name
Live and Let Die

perfectomix | 11/17/2006, 2:52 pm EST

Hm. I know it was a big hit, but I’m a little surprised by the number of votes for Live & Let Die. Yeah, it’s one of the better themes, but…maybe I’m just sick of it thanks to “classic rock” radio.

I’ve got too many personal favorites to pick one, but I’d say the definitive Bond theme is surely Goldfinger.

Personal runners-up:
James Bond Theme (From Dr. No)
Diamonds Are Forever
Nobody Does It Better
A View To A Kill
Living Daylights
GoldenEye
Tomorrow Never Dies

Worst theme? Easy!
The Man With The Golden Gun
The cheese factor of this song is *almost* enough to make it enjoyable. Almost.

PS: To the poster who thought Moby sampled You Only Live Twice…You’re probably thinking of the Robbie Williams song Millennium.

tbone | 11/17/2006, 3:07 pm EST

Nobody Does it Better is the old school choice, but Goldeneye is by far the best overall and Tina and Onatopp really set the tone for bringing the franchise out of the dreary Timothy Dalton era.

Sherry | 11/17/2006, 3:27 pm EST

The new one is very good – sung by Chris Cornell – “You know my Name” – but for all time favorite, I’d say Carly singing “Nobody Does it Better” has to rule.

Mary | 11/17/2006, 3:29 pm EST

You Only Live Twice. Mesmerizing.

STRATCAT | 11/17/2006, 3:45 pm EST

Nobody does it better rocks and Carly Simon was really HOT then and is still not too shabby now.
when i was a kid in the 70’s i used to stop in the record stores and stare at Carly’s hot album covers.
I remember one cover where she’s in lingerie and i would just salivate staring at it.
Ah such is youth.
Anyway, i love that tune and she does such a sexy job with it.
The other Bond tune that kicks ass is of course Shirley Bassey’s
“Goldfinger”.
Cheer s!
Stratcat

Jay | 11/17/2006, 4:27 pm EST

THe best ever is Thunderball by THE MAN Tom Jones. If you don’t believe it, then you are wrong.

JxSxPx | 11/17/2006, 4:31 pm EST

The World Is Not Enough
Live and Let Die
Die Another Day

those three are my faves. yes, i like Madge’s Bond theme.

DonkeyTron | 11/17/2006, 4:32 pm EST

‘The Living Daylights’ A-Ha rules!!

Alfred | 11/17/2006, 4:38 pm EST

“Thunderball” by Tom Jones

Tell me you didn’t orgasim when he holds that last note for 15 days. Awesome!

Mike | 11/17/2006, 5:11 pm EST

I love the A-Ha call with “The Living Daylights”…that’s solid too.

No love for “For Your Eyes Only” from Sheana Easton. Come on! Great song from…and I’ll stand behind this…the best Bond movie ever. What!? Boom!…I said it! “For Your Eyes Only” has some of the best, and original action sequences of any Bond flick. I know it’s Roger Moore…but it’s solid as a motherfucker!!!

cdubya | 11/17/2006, 6:33 pm EST

LIVE AND LET DIE, natch!

Then, A VIEW TO A KILL.. Very 80’s and a good period piece.

Cool video, too.

Gaz | 11/17/2006, 6:53 pm EST

The 60’s themes Goldfinger, Thunderball make the more recent efforts pale in comparison. My favourite was & always will be You only live twice.

Songs that should have been Bond themes include Bowies Lady Grinning Soul or more recently something off Goldfrapps 1st album (just thought I’d throw that in).

Jaws | 11/17/2006, 7:03 pm EST

The best bond theme ever is Diamonds Are Forever. Goldfinger is good, but I think people are choosing that song based more on the movie (which is the best Bond film ever) rather than for the song itself.

The most underrated Bond theme is definately Tina Turner’s Goldeneye theme. A total throwback to the old school themes, and it’s an incredibly sexy song.

Dardo | 11/17/2006, 9:43 pm EST

“The world is not enough”. I don’t know what’s better: the song or the video.

oh, and “tomorrow never dies” is cool too.

Luke | 11/17/2006, 10:05 pm EST

Die Another Day

Tberd | 11/17/2006, 10:36 pm EST

Goldfinger
View To A Kill
Live And Let Die
” Got It” Good… Later…

Monsieur | 11/18/2006, 2:50 am EST

Is it me or James Bond just sucks anyways… Daniel Craig is cabbage

Like… lets watch a David Lynch movie, dude

Brian | 11/18/2006, 3:01 am EST

Tina Turner owns this one… who cares what Tom Yorke thinks. “You Know My Name” is a brilliant title though, Cornell nailed that one. The song is alright, but what a damn fine title. But uh, yeah, “Goldeneye” all the way.

X | 11/18/2006, 2:55 pm EST

Madonna’s Die another Day
Wings Live & Let Die
Garbage The World Is Not Enough

Craig W | 11/18/2006, 3:16 pm EST

Nobody Does It Better (The Spy Who Loved Me) – Carly Simon, just listen to those great chord changes.

dmbu27 | 11/18/2006, 5:27 pm EST

In Order
1)Live and Let die- still good after with G&R
2) Nobody does it better- fit in with cool connery better than sagging roger moore.
3)On her majesty’s secret- Jon Barry Orchestra made this cool
4)We have all the time in the world- Louis Armstrong

Dude | 11/18/2006, 10:05 pm EST

Yeah, I agree “You Know My Name” is an incredible title, Cornell really struck gold there… too bad it was already the name of a fucking Beatles song: You Know My Name (Look Up The Number), which was a joke song that was the b-side of Let It Be.

tom | 11/18/2006, 10:58 pm EST

live and let die is best oringinal and the guns n roses cover beats that one in my opinion

Matt | 11/19/2006, 12:01 am EST

Tough decision, but I really like the world is not enough by garbage.

clashman90 | 11/19/2006, 12:11 am EST

Definitly nobody does it better is THE best bond song

Doni Erlangga | 11/19/2006, 8:50 am EST

You Only Live Twice!!!

“Live and Let Die” followed closely by “A View to a Kill”

Live and Let Die
You Know My Name
Nobody Does it Better

wereallgonnadie | 11/20/2006, 2:24 am EST

Charming apocryphal story about Live And Let Die: McCartney and Wings presented what they considered to be the finished tracks to Cubby Broccoli, executive producer of the film. He was all smiles and said “That’s not a bad demo, can’t wait to hear the finished product…” But I have to go with the original… every time I hear that guitar riff I see the barrel of the gun and dripping blood.

Randy B | 11/20/2006, 3:53 am EST

The World is Not Enough is awesome. Shirley Manson kicks many fannies.

Matthew S | 11/20/2006, 9:27 am EST

It has to be one of the following:-
Live and Let Die,
A View To A Kill or Goldfinger,

However The Living Daylights was the first single I ever bought.

zac | 11/20/2006, 9:38 am EST

any one with sean conary. he makes the best bond

Mr. Vorhias | 11/20/2006, 11:15 am EST

Either…

Live And Let Die
or
The World Is Not Enough

Probably Live and Let Die.

I’m still a little confused as to how A-Ha and Duran Duran managed to make it to Bond Theme status.

paco chaos | 11/20/2006, 11:24 am EST

live and let die is my fave ,
followed by goldfinger,
a view to a kill,
and the world is not enough.
but that madonna crap is just another example of why this woman needs to be stopped.

Mandela | 11/20/2006, 12:12 pm EST

honestly iwould probably say live and let die had i ever seen that particular flick but i havent, so i have to say you know my name by chris cornell cause its pretty good

jungleland | 11/20/2006, 12:36 pm EST

Live and Let Die – Wings

A View To A Kill – Duran Duran

The Spy Who Loved Me (Nobody Does It Better)-Carly Simon

A Three Way Tie

The rest are rather forgetable

I hate For Your Eyes Only…what an anoying song

coemgen | 11/20/2006, 1:03 pm EST

The Tina Turner song would’ve been a good one if Bono and the Edge performed it, instead of just writing it.

likearollingnick | 11/20/2006, 1:53 pm EST

k.d. lang’s closing title “Surrender” from Tomorrow Never Dies. Kicks the hell out of Sheryl Crow’s theme from the same film.

richie sambora | 11/20/2006, 2:07 pm EST

slippery when wet

Helvis | 11/21/2006, 11:32 am EST

Daniel Johnston’s cover version of “Live and Let Die” is better than the one in the movie.
