Elton’s Beef With Religion, The Who’s New Tour Dates, Bill Cosby’s a Hater

11/13/06, 2:30 pm EST

Elton John

  • Elton John seems to have some kind of thing against God? “I think religion has always tried to turn hatred toward gay people,” John reportedly told the Observer. “From my point of view, I would ban religion completely. Organized religion doesn’t seem to work. It turns people into really hateful lemmings and it’s not really compassionate.”
  • The Who will reportedly be announcing new 2007 tour dates at 5 pm today. Oh, it’s all happening.
  • Atlantic-signed nineteen-year-old rapper Fat Al will reportedly have his dreams of stardom quashed by Bill Cosby. Cosby alleges the moniker Fat Al is too close to his cartoon creation’s name Fat Albert, and the kid has been forced to change his stage name to the decidedly less cool Al Fatz. “I’m just trying to come up and Bill Cosby was hating,” Fatz reportedly said.
  • The Shins joke/promise that their new video for “Phantom Limb” will be what their site calls “a remake of “Hot For Teacher” for 2007.” The post explains: “James looks awesome in his big David Lee Roth wig. God I wish I wasn’t joking.” Nice. Right?
  • Procol Harum’s ex-keyboardist Matthew Fisher is suing PC lyricist Keith Reid and singer Gary Brooker for a portion of the proceeds from the band’s hit “Whiter Shade of Pale,” claiming that he wrote the song’s organ part. Reid and Brooker point out that he wasn’t even in the band when the song was written.
  • We really like the video for Albert Hammond Jr.’s first single “101.” It’s plaintive and pretty and weird. Good work.
  • Bono showed up onstage in Sydney to perform an impromptu version of Kylie’s “Kids.” “Here kitty, kitty” he reportedly called to her, as she was dressed in a leopard costume. That creeps us out just a tad.
  • Kanye West was reportedly pushed by a Sydney Opera House security guard. West was just seeing the sites in Sydney when he happened upon a crowd of people surrounding Borat, who was being photographed at the Opera House. As always, there’s some suggestion that the push was racially motivated, but West doesn’t seem to be making that claim. Yet.

Not everyone is gay in the world, and not everyone who is religious has it our for gays.

When you slew entire RELIGIONS – you’re also taking shots at people who love Elton John’s music and love and honor God in their own way.

Keep your religious comments to yourself – leave that to idiots like politicians.

I would assume that any guy who has ever had a cock in his mouth is pretty angry with God.

Niki | 11/13/2006, 4:11 pm EST

I understand, Elton.

Merrite | 11/13/2006, 4:17 pm EST

Elton John needs to shut up. Just because a bunch of Christians or Jews or whatever don’t like gays doesn’t mean everyone who is religious does. In fact, he is just as bad as they are by making harsh sweeping generalizations.

Ken Vail Jr. | 11/13/2006, 4:20 pm EST

whatever he says, i still enjoy a lot of elton’s music. his new cd, ‘captain and the kid’, is good. i dig it.

Kliffee | 11/13/2006, 4:22 pm EST

His music might suck since he got clean and sober but at least he’s always doing something entertaining. Good for him!!

taint | 11/13/2006, 4:31 pm EST

religion is for weak people

Banjo | 11/13/2006, 4:35 pm EST

You know, you expect artists to have some sort of open-mindedness. By making comments like that, Elton is exactly the same as the religious zealots who condemn him (obviously). Clearly he’s talking about Christianity. I guess he never heard of the various branches of Christianity that allow Gay ministers. I love Elton’s music, but seriously, open your eyes man.

Andy | 11/13/2006, 4:54 pm EST

Elton John is a bigot.

Huh? | 11/13/2006, 5:13 pm EST

Oh, yes, Elton John is a bigot. It is a known fact that organized religion goes out of its way to embrace gays. As a matter of fact, no religion–especially one in the United States of America–would ever support a ban on gay marriage. No, Elton John is just wrong! LOL!

Nate | 11/13/2006, 5:39 pm EST

It’s a shame that Elton John has the assumption that what he says doesn’t matter. Like having a nearly fourty-year successful music career will cause people to simply take what you say at face value. Sorry, Elton. With celebrity comes responsibility,
especially in the American press. Maybe Brits will view your words as another desperate public tantrum, but you’re only proving yourself to be a bitter old queen.

Rich | 11/13/2006, 7:03 pm EST

What’s Sir Elton’s problem anyway? There’s plenty of clergy out there that’d blow him for nothin’

Borat | 11/13/2006, 8:14 pm EST

When did Elton’s John become the gay? In Kazakhstan we likes the crocodile rocks and his Tiny Dancer…yes!
but not so much if he likes the nude men to be on him.
Maybe is joke?
Next I bet you tell me George Michaels and the Wham is also the gay…
The Rolling Stone is always make fun, yes?

ryan | 11/13/2006, 8:38 pm EST

elton john is now an official douchbag. he is being just as those few religous queer bashers by taking it out on a general group of people. good going hypocrite

blueflash | 11/13/2006, 9:53 pm EST

Elton is oversimplifying a bit but the fact is that the Christians with the biggest mouths are the ant-gay bigots. They’re hurting their religion in the long run far more than anyone else

Santos | 11/13/2006, 10:14 pm EST

Hey Elton, its not only christians who don’t like ass bandits. A lot of atheists think y’all are idiots as well.

i am god | 11/13/2006, 11:31 pm EST

Any of you idiots that think that christianity does not encourage gay hating are just plain ignorant. Christianity is one of the most intolerant religions in the world.

Laurens from Indonesia | 11/14/2006, 12:08 am EST

Uhm… I forgot me line. O, got it. Come to Indonesia, I’ll treat you on chicken satay.

Klaatu | 11/14/2006, 12:50 am EST

I grew up in a really conservative church. I have never once heard a sermon specifically directed at homosexuals. Even though my church regards gay sex as wrong, the usual approach is to suggest that the act, not the person, is the problem. Even then, it is only a problem once somebody has made a decision to follow Christ.

Most Christian churches preach that sex belongs only in heterosexual marriage. Most Americans, not just Christians, believe that marriage should only be heterosexual. This is not hate. It is a difference of opinion. Gay people need to understand that you don’t casually redefine a human institution that has evolved over millennia, and most of them do.

rustyshackleford | 11/14/2006, 3:09 am EST

Is it just me or does the threat of banning religion seem worse than anything that any organized religion teaches? The problem is that people only look at the small, radical minorities in a religion and take those actions as representative of the entire thing. That is why so many people hate Muslims….because they only see the radical muslims on TV, and those radicals do not represent the beliefs of Islam, which is actually a peaceful religion. Same thing goes with Christianity–it is a peaceful religion and the Bible teaches to love everyone, but there are those radicals who misconstrue what is said and turn it into something hateful. To prohibit people’s beliefs is wrong. It would be wrong to ban any religion. To me, controlling thoughts and beliefs is worse than anything. Elton John is a great musician, but that comment was not very smart. The majority of religious followers do not preach hatred, but Elton is by wanting to expel any kind of religious thought. That is of a totalitarian nature and it is wrong, no matter who you are. You cannot control beliefs and thoughts. A world where people cannot believe what they want to believe without being persecuted for it is nothing short of evil. Elton needs to keep his mouth shut about that and start taking into account that not all religions preach hatred.

Mike/Houston,TX. | 11/14/2006, 4:34 am EST

“Fat Al” should have known better and at least used some common sense, which seems to always be lacking in today’s self centered youth. It’s too easy to take a ride at the expense of others just to make a buck. Stop blaming Bill Cosby for your stupidity and for protecting his franchised creations – Cosby’s an original and not a rip off.

matthew | 11/14/2006, 7:23 am EST

I find it funny to see people criticizing Elton’s statements as an attack on freedom of thought. Since when has religion aided freedom of thought? Religion seems to produce way more narrow-minded people in the world than broad-minded people.

Poindexter | 11/14/2006, 11:16 am EST

As a gay man, I do not agree with John’s banning of religion. To me, that is just as bad as the ultra conservative types rallying to ban gay marriage and civil unions. I know plenty of Christians who are pro-gay.

Jack D | 11/14/2006, 11:38 am EST

Poindexter gives good head.

God is Dead | 11/14/2006, 12:45 pm EST

I agree with Elton. Religion is for lemmings.

Klaatu | 11/14/2006, 3:08 pm EST

Matthew

The Christians you see on TV are different than most Christians I know.

Klaatu | 11/14/2006, 4:40 pm EST

God is Dead

Lemmings, like Christians, are actually highly sophisticated and adaptable creatures. They are not prone to mass suicide. Disney documentary makers deliberately herded them into jumping off a cliff.

Poindexter | 11/14/2006, 4:53 pm EST

Jack D. Your damn right I give good head.

Klaatu | 11/14/2006, 5:37 pm EST

Poindexter

Maybe so, but you give lousy “you’re.”

just kidding, not really a grammar nazi or a homophobe.

/eek! a gay person! Run away before he imposes his agenda!

i am god | 11/15/2006, 12:42 am EST

Hey Klaatu, believing that sex should only occure within a heterosexual marraige is an opinion. It is fine to have this opinion, but it is never okay for your opinions to be legislated so that it impedes anothers “pursuite of happiness.” Gay people getting married dosnt hurt you at all and it dosnt hurt society. Just as you have the freedom to be a heterosexual christian, so you owe other people the right to be gay athiests. So in that respect your opinion might not be “hate” but it is pretty fucked up.

daboss | 11/15/2006, 8:32 am EST

The Bible makes clear who will go to hell. It is wrong that christains ignore the other sins and focus on gays only with not going to heaven.
