Weekend Rock List: Biggest, Baddest, Rock Rivalries

11/10/06, 6:01 pm EST

Nas, Jay-ZThis whole U2 vs. R.E.M. debate has gotten us thinking about other major rock rivalries. Situations in which one band’s fans loathe another band’s fans (Panic! At the Disco vs. Bloc Party) as well as those in which the actual artists indulge the beef (Jay-Z vs. Nas). We are equal-opportunity drama-lovers, so all band vs. band, pop star vs. pop star, and rapper vs. rapper debates are welcome on our weekend rock list. Here’s our off-the-top-of-our-head selections for the most compelling music-related rivalries. Which ones would you add? And who wins in each of these contests?

  • Pearl Jam vs. Nirvana
  • Metallica vs. Megadeth
  • Blur vs. Oasis
  • Britney vs. Christina
  • David Lee Roth vs. Van Halen

No one brought up Lennon vs McCartney?

Eric | 6/3/2009, 5:11 pm EST

LOL @ anyone who has chosen Oasis over Blur, although I’m guessing most of you are Americans who have never listened to a Blur album.

Oasis released two good (but overrated albums) and have since proceeded to rip themselves off and release second-rate crap for over ten years.

Blur was easily one of the most consistent bands of the 1990s. Six of their seven albums are excellent (Leisure not so much). They practically invented Britpop with Modern Life is Rubbish. “Country House” beat “Roll With It” in the chart wars, and even though Oasis’ Morning Glory went on to vastly outsell The Great Escape, Blur answered by reinventing themselves with their self-titled album, push sonic limits even further with 13, and explored electronic and world music with Think Tank.

What did Oasis do after “winning the war” of Britpop? They released album after album of mediocre nonsense. Be Here Now? Standing on the Shoulder of Giants? Heathen Chemistry? All shitty albums.

Oasis are a mediocre rock band.
Blur are a brilliant pop band.

End of discussion.

jimmy | 7/11/2008, 8:18 pm EST

U Blur fans make me laugh, they were awful, the most cheesiest band ever? No wonder there not a band anymore, they were outclassed by the legendary OASIS!
Oasis were miles better than blur, theres no contest! Who else could write better songs than wonderwall or live forever! There top albums were voted the best albums of all time! Oasis are the best band ever!

Chris | 7/4/2008, 10:54 pm EST

Nirvana over Pearl Jam simply because they burnt out and have 2 very good albums which in my opinion Pearl Jam never matched…..its my opinion of course.

And Oasis, who are my favourite band, because they captured the moodof Britain at the time, and because they weren’t afraid of becoming the biggest band in the world. Blur are pretentious tossers who were going to release an album called Blur vs America….they can eat shit

Grunge. | 8/25/2007, 3:43 pm EST

Grunge music consists of “punk” and “Heavy Metal” mixed in a melting pot. If any of you had any sense..you would know..”Nirvana” stood to its roots..while “Pearl Jam” had more..of a “country/southern” rock feel. Duh. Look it up. XD
IF you feel like arguing with me, here’s my msn.

There’s quite a bit of passion in the Pearl Jam vs. Nirvana debate, I see.
I won’t take sides then~

Eddie Vedder vs. Kurt Cobain? pssh…please. Eddie’s a better singer/song writer for one. What the hell did Kurt ever do? Put a few chords together and screamed and screached and made up stupid rhymes that dont make any damn sense at all. Nirvana was just marketed better at first. Pearl Jam is one of the top 5 greatest bands of all time. You had the Beatles, The Stones, Zeppelin, U2 and the most important band in rock-n-roll, Pearl Jam. Kurt was good at one thing, blowing his brains out.

Amanda | 2/16/2007, 10:00 am EST

Well um….. what about the Axl Rose and Vince Neil feud anyways…. Van Halen definetly kicks David Lee Roth’s ASS!!!!

Pretentious Indie Music Fan | 2/12/2007, 12:18 am EST

The degree to which people will lash out and spew vitriol when they’re debating on the internet about which band is better than another band is stunning to me.

Art is subjective; make up your own minds, and don’t put down others for disagreeing with you. Your pettiness is not conducive to honesty.

Dwhip | 1/29/2007, 9:15 pm EST

Ok, van halen, metallica, nirvana win- and sorry, but are people too retarded to remember BEATLES V.S. ROLLING STONES?

miccc | 1/17/2007, 3:55 am EST

Largest most loyal fanbase. Most influential in their respective decades of dominance. Most influential and emulated, period. Album sales. Only two bands are head and shoulders above the rest. THE BEATLES and LED ZEPPELIN. I give a very slight edge to Zeppelin because they earned their iconic status solely on the strength of their music and live performances. Zeppelin became enormous with virtually no help from the media whereas the Beatles were relentlessly hyped everywhere you turned. Despite what R. S. magazine would have us believe, Led Zeppelin have been far more influential than the Stones and outsold them 2 to 1 in album sales. Zeppelin has outsold the Who over 5 to 1. The record shows it’s Led Zep. and The Beatles and then everyone else.

Out of these, I think the most dramatic is Metallica VS Megadeth. Personally I prefer Megadeth. Although Metallica has some sweet riffs, somehow the way they produce their albums just sucks out all the soul. Same with the singing, Hetfield sounds like he’s trying too hard to sound angry.

harvard | 11/23/2006, 3:05 am EST

Pearl Jam’s song ‘Black’ is a good reason to suggest that they shat all over Nirvana!

tupac is alive! | 11/19/2006, 8:40 pm EST

the winners: blur, nirvana, metallica, christina, and van halen. their competitors are jokes compared to them. another one could be stuges vs. ramones. i pick ramones

Oz man | 11/19/2006, 1:51 am EST

Well about a year ago I did’nt really care much for Pearl Jam. But between then and now alot has happened!

1. I purchased their new record. Which is easily the best album released this year. This has lead me to buy some of their other albums…No Code, Yield and Binaural. All of them are great rock records.

2. I saw them live two weeks ago in Sydney Australia. Having seen them live now…well I think they are quite easily the best rock band in the world today.

I used love Nirvana, and I still think they have some great songs but Nevermind really is a pile of shit. A few from In Utero are great songs and these along with their unplugged record are their defining works.

But all in all, it just does’nt compare to Pearl Jam.

PEARL JAM by a long way!

john lennon | 11/19/2006, 12:38 am EST

I think there should be a rumble between all of the older/first bands versus their contemporary impostors
For example…
-John Lennon vs. The Redwalls
-Deep Purple vs. Wolfmother
-The Rolling Stones vs. JET
-U2 vs. Coldplay
-The Grateful Dead vs. Phish
-Nirvana vs. Pearl Jam
In these cases the older bands, although mostly dead, will always win.

Rob | 11/18/2006, 4:36 pm EST

Nirvana beat Pearl Jam by miles. It isn’t even close.

Cobain | 11/18/2006, 4:23 pm EST

Nirvan beat Pearl Jam easily.

Rudy | 11/18/2006, 4:17 pm EST

Winners: Nirvana, Metallica, Oasis, Britney, and Van Halen.

Nirvana vs Pearl Jam is a joke. Pearl Jam is a good band which pale in comparison to Nirvana. Nirvana made bigger impact, had more influence and were basically much more important and better to Rock.

giorgio Lucchese (belgium) | 11/16/2006, 8:45 am EST

Pear Jam Vs Nirvana? Pearl jam for sure! Nirvana is a legend just because of Kurt’s suicide… It’s always the same things, when an artist die young he became automatically a legend! Eddie sings like a god and musicians are amazing!
Nirvana was a great band but imagine eddie vedder or axl rose commit suicide in 94?!

BANYA | 11/16/2006, 4:22 am EST

Although both Pearl Jam and Nirvana are completely different in style, I think Pearl Jam have the more memorable songs.

When you compare Ten with Nevermind, songs like Black, Release, Alive and Jeremy just have so much more depth and are just more memorable.

So many of the songs on Nevermind are just throwaway sluggers. Granted Come as you are, Teen Spirit (as overplayed as it is, along with Jeremy) and In Bloom are great.

Is it just me or is Nirvana’s best work a sprinkling of songs across all three albums. A few from each album are great…but I don’t see any GREAT ALBUMS amonst their work.

Whereas Pearl Jam have produced some albums…Vs, Vitalogy, Ten, No Code and Yield…that ARE great.

frank | 11/15/2006, 1:06 am EST

This goes to Jim, you are a F*cking Fa**ot, I have every PJ album and Nirvana album, in fact I like both bands, I just happen to like Nirvana more, Pearl Jam gets very repetitive, if you don’t agree then you obviously don’t play guitar. I’ve listened to the albums I’m just baffeled about how every PJ fans makes asumpsions about anyone who doesn’t suck eddies cock like they’re less than of a music fan. I think kurt put way more emotions, and passion into everything, and for the people who think rape me is a copy of SLTS, the chords are completely different, they are in different order on the fretboard, and there is a different strum pattern, I’m not saying the song is a masterpiece or that it was a hard song to make, I’m just saying that I don’t see the connection so easily as everyone else. Again I say Nirvana
Blur
Metallica
Van Halen
Christina and Brittney are a waste of space.

Layne Staley | 11/14/2006, 8:15 pm EST

Pearl Jam are terrible, you people need to get out more.

mike from waterford | 11/14/2006, 10:51 am EST

to start, this debate is a joke.

pearl jam is vastly superior compared to the bloated and overrated nirvana. sure, kurt and the boys were good but come on, pearl jam has always owned and always will

noname | 11/14/2006, 3:35 am EST

Metallica beats Megadeth because of great albums of 80’s.

Lennon beats McCartney because of more true feelings

Accept beats Scorpions because of playing harder and faste

Waters and Pink Floyd separately were both great

Hey ROLLING STONE!!! look at the replies you got from this. looks like PEARL JAM v NIRVANA hit some nerves. but who cares, k-fed and brittney are breaking up, that’s what’s important right…no wait that’s what sells magazines. what’s important is rumor is there’s a sex tape…

Seeing as how Kurt took Nirvana out of the PJ VS Nirvana debate in 1994 I find it only fair to compare the music they had written or released at the time of his death because we have no idea what Nirvana would have or could have been today… That being said I think Pearl Jam takes the cake, I believe Vedder and company had a vastly superior sound and musicianship than Nirvana, I like both bands and I know they also both have legions of fans who debate whos a “better band” but in my opinion Pearl Jam in 1994 (writing vitology and that time and touring with a few of those songs ) had the wheels turning to be what they are today which is the best band of the past 15 or so years, Nirvana on the other hand may have broken up or kurt may have gone solo, who knows?

Hunter | 11/13/2006, 8:21 pm EST

I love Beck… but its not surprising that the same idiot who said when Cobain farts its better than Pearl Jam also thinks Beck is better than Bob Dylan..

Please.

Unstrung | 11/13/2006, 8:13 pm EST

Anyone who has seen Nirvana or watched footage of them should be able to recognize an aspect of Nirvana which is not at all matched by Pearl Jam: their statement. Kurt completely ruins the aesthetics of shows, even the albums at times, because he can do it and he doesn’t want to sound like people want him to. It would be foolish to say that Nirvana sounded even close to as good as Pearl Jam did or does in concert. They might have put on as good or better of a show, and they clearly laid the groundwork for all of grunge, but that alone wouldn’t make them a better band. Nirvana became about rejecting all norms at any cost; Pearl Jam has been about avoiding the norms, but not at the cost of playing any worse–both live and in the studio. Nirvana puts out great music, but its not just because of their music that its great. This is what makes the bands so hard to compare (as close as people put them together, you might as well compare the Beatles and Led Zeppelin). Though this is why I love Pearl Jam more.

dt | 11/13/2006, 7:33 pm EST

Nirvana and Pearl Jam are equally great and have some underated stuff. Listen to Insesticide from Nirvana and Lost Dogs from Pearl jam. How some songs off lost dogs never made it on to studio albums is mind bending. Sad, Hard to Imagine, Fatal etc. etc. etc. Neither band is repetitive. Pearl Jam has a broader sound. But if you want repetitive garbage pick up a nickelback album

Jesus | 11/13/2006, 7:08 pm EST

Nirvana are way better than Pearl Jam, any idiot knows that. When Kurt Cobain farts it’s better than a Pearl Jam song.

Also I can’t believe that people are picking Oasis over Blur… You people have clearly never listened to a Blur album in your life, do some research, listen to their albums, do yourself a favour. (Parklife, Think Tank, Great Escape)

As for the rest, they are not important enough to warrant comment

I’d like to see:

——Beck V’s Bob Dylan

I vote for Beck.

Jim | 11/13/2006, 6:08 pm EST

It’s pretty safe to say that Frank guy has never heard a full Pearl Jam apart from maybe Ten.He doesn’t seem to have heard all Nirvana’s albums either if he doesn’t think they sound the same.

billytp | 11/13/2006, 5:54 pm EST

notice the whole pj v nirvana thing still lives on 15 years later, as a fan of both, pj more, I must look at it like this. that was the last generation of great music, real rock n’ roll. But unfortunatley Pearl Jam must win because just like in a boxing match they are the last one standing that determines the winner. Kurt pretty much through in the towel and quit. and Pearl Jam will live on forever.

Hey Kay, london is calling…. and it is calling for anarchy in the UK. Sex Pistols all the way. RIP Sid Vicious

Mabby | 11/13/2006, 5:26 pm EST

Nirvana beats Pearl Jam because of overall songwriting talent

Blur vs Oasis is a tie. Blur is more versatile, but Oasis has better melodies.

Metallica beats Megadeth because Mustaine is a huge puss.

Christina beats Britney because she actually has talent.

Van Halen beats Roth because Roth is an ass.

I think the Dandy Warhols vs. Brian Jonestown Massacre should be on here. At least Anton thought it was a rivalry….

Kay | 11/13/2006, 5:05 pm EST

What about The Clash vs. Sex Pistols?

Axl Rose is a prick

mossman | 11/13/2006, 2:16 pm EST

What does any of this matter?? Guns N’ Roses with or without slash were, are, and will always be melodic perfection as long as Axl Rose is still alive!!

Loki | 11/13/2006, 2:16 pm EST

Nirvana had some great song ideas, too bad they couldn’t play their instraments worth sh*t! They should of stayed in the garage and played 6 hours a day for another year before recording that first album. Pearl Jam is much better in the talent area. Both bands evolved over time. PJ became more experimental and cerebral while Kurt went from heroin addict to suicidal heroine addict.
Metallica was a great band from ‘83 (with mustaine) ’till ‘around ‘94. Megadeth has been great ever since Peace Sells… came out.
Never heard of blur so I don’t care
Cristina vs. Britney - I’d f*ck either one, but gotta give the edge to Cristina because she didn’t marry a no-talent white trash loser that should be flipping bugers in Cleveland.
Van Halen was cool with DLR and Sammy, but without either, they are a joke. Pick a singer and stay with him.
I may be dating myself a bit, but when I was in high school it was either Motley Crue or Ratt- Crue Rules
Another one was: Black Sabbath circa 1980-95 vs. Ozzy
Everyone knows the winner of that one- The fans when Sabbath joined the Ozzfest and I saw something I thought I would never see.

Pearl Jam vs. Nirvana - In 1992 this beef had potential, as it involved the two biggest bands in the land. However, since fans really never got on one side or the other and the bands buried the hatchet, it never really reached true tabloid glory. If you had to declare a winner, I suppose it’d have to be Pearl Jam, if only because they’re all still alive and touring.

Metallica vs. Megadeth - Eh, give it to Metallica, but really, since 1995, everyone involved in this one’s a loser.

Blur vs. Oasis - Now this one was entertaining mostly due to the Gallagher bros. breathtaking arrogance and the British media’s determination to record every second of it. Who cares who won? (Oasis, by the way) The fans were the true winners here.

Britney vs. Christina- You could give this one to Britney based on record sales and gereral tabloid stardom, but look closer. As trashy as “Xtina” has been at times, she has yet to be knocked up (twice!) by a guy who looks like he should be pumping gas somewhere off the Jersey Turnpike. Give it to Christina on dignity points. Wow, never thought I’d type that sentence.

David Lee Roth vs. Van Halen- Had Van Halen chosen to call it a day after firing Sammy Hagar, they’d run away with this one. However, the embarrassment that was “Van Halen III” just about trumps any thing Dave has (or hasn’t) done since then. Call it a draw and hope they all just go away.

Taylor | 11/13/2006, 12:01 pm EST

pearl jam vs. nirvana is silly. both are great, and I don’t think the fans have beef (or at least they shouldn’t). seattle rules.

how can you forget beatles vs. rolling stones?

Nirvana by a hair
Megadeth just because
BLUR by miles!!!
Christina because she has actual talent
&
David Lee Roth because Van Halen is a bad joke without him…

GC | 11/13/2006, 11:56 am EST

nirvana is better than pearl jam, but must we argue? i like them both! yes, i said it! metallica OWNS megadeath. hmmm…blur vs. oasis….i’d have to say oasis. britney vs. christina? come on! christina can sing. and david lee roth vs. van halen…really? he was IN van halen for a while. but i vote for van halen, because eddie’s a darn good guitar player.

Nate Kelley | 11/13/2006, 11:43 am EST

Nick | 11/12/2006, 9:26 pm EST

I believe bands like Nirvana and Pearl Jam played for the benefit of us all, not to be one up one another, and I cringe when I hear shit like this.

“You come to play a benefit and somebody tries serve you legal papers..this is the most punk ass move I have ever heard of…it just makes you crazy sometimes you try and do some good things and there are still people out ther that going to test your will and desecrate your hope.”

-Eddy Vedder, Benaroya Hall

thesmeeze | 11/12/2006, 9:18 pm EST

My opinion is that Pearl Jam wins over Nirvana. I think that Eddie Vedder has an amazing lyrical depth on a lot of songs that gets overlooked. Pearl Jam has a very broad catalogue of songs that are eclectic to say the least, even though they also have several less than stellar songs (Binaural +Riot Act=50% what the fuck happened?). If you don`t think Pearl Jam is electic, then you probably have only listened to their more popular tracks and not a full album. Live, Pearl Jam flat out rocks. Let`s be honest, “From the Muddy Banks of the Wishkah” is not a good live album, although “unplugged” is. Electric and in concert Nirvana was not so good. I also like the fact that Pearl Jam covers a lot of Neil Young songs. They are highly active politically, meaning that they stand for more than just a musical movement. However, it is super fucking difficult to compare these bands as Cobain died in his prime. Who knows how Nirvana would have grown and evolved, and what they would have sounded like if they had been given as much time as Pearl Jam has. Plus, Nirvana was a 3-piece, where as Pearl Jam is a 5 and sometimes 6 piece (when they have their keyboard player). Those extra musicians really help, especially live. I think an interesting question that stems from this is, more than what Nirvana would have accomplished if Cobain were to have lived, is whether or not the Foo Fighters ever would have existed if Cobain were still alive?

Ted | 11/12/2006, 9:14 pm EST

Mother love bone is better than nirvana and pearl jam.

Zach | 11/12/2006, 8:41 pm EST

The entire Nirvana vs. Pearl Jam argument that has evolved from this discussion has been a complete joke. A bunch of dumb things have been said by both sides of this debate.

Nirvana and Pearl Jam are both awesome bands. The fact that there are so many posts that completely bash one side is ridiculous. You can’t compare the two bands on a number of issues since Pearl Jam’s career lasted far longer for obvious reasons.

Both bands broke through with amazing albums. I personally think Nevermind was better than Ten because song for song I think it was better and the impact it had. But Ten was still one of the greatest albums of the 90’s. I think Pearl Jam was better musically. Cobain freely admitted he wasn’t a great guitarist. Grohl is an unbelievable drummer. But Mike McCready is simply a phenomenal guitarist as are the other members of the band.

Pearl Jam released some other brilliant albums in my mind, including Vitalogy and Vs. But other albums were nothing spectacular. Nirvana was good on Bleach, Beatle-esque on Nevermind, and genius on In Utero and the Unplugged cd was also simply amazing.

People have been chiding the fact that all three Nirvana albums are exactly the same. How musically retarded are you guys? If you cannot differentiate between the chaos of Bleach and the polished sound of Nevermind, there is no point arguing with you. And In Utero was also significantly different from Nevermind, yet somewhat similar to Bleach. I guess you could argue that In Utero was a mixture of the two previous Nirvana albums.

To those who say either band were boring with their simple repetitive riffs, you might as well say all the great bands are repetitive and boring. Fact is both bands have songs built upon a single three chord riff and others that are more musically complicated. Rape Me is a pretty simple and repeated riff, yet the song is pretty amazing.

So basically, this argument has been a joke and I am dumber for having read it.

I have 6 Blur cds and 1 Oasis (Definitely Maybe), so I’m of course gonna say Blur. But even if I just go by their singles, Blur DESTROYS Oasis. I mean, sure, Oasis found success in America briefly when Blur never did, and Oasis sold a helluva lotta Morning Glories, but in my eyes Blur will always be the winner of that Britpop war. The main reason why? They started steering away from Britpop and continued to evolve while Oasis kept churning out the same crap. I think Oasis is going to always win when you ask Americans because they don’t sound quite as impenetrably British as Blur do. I mean, I consider myself a pretty casual fan of Blur; I don’t think I can ever fully love their Britishness. It’s just too much sometimes. But c’mon, Oasis are lame.

However, Pulp wins over both these bands.

And I’m going to have to go with Britney. (I smell a comeback!!)

andrei | 11/12/2006, 7:36 pm EST

my honest opinion:
nirvana vs pearl jam is a dead rivalry, because nirvana is not around anymore.. but it would be interesting if Kurt were still alive.. would they have the staying power and the relevance like that of Pearl Jam?

so it’s pearl jam..

Madumdum | 11/12/2006, 7:34 pm EST

Gabe - you tell lies. Oasis did not make a good album, nor did they ever write a good song.

Let’s talk about a rivalry in which the artists actually have comparative merits.

The Smiths vs. The Cure

STRATCAT | 11/12/2006, 6:50 pm EST

What made Nirvana so compelling was the blatent disarming honesty in Cobains lyrics.
The fact that they could come up with Beatlesque melodies to match that made it all the more affecting.
Of course Cobain’s death intensified the lyrical content and the importance of Nirvana’s music but that always happens when a talented and exposed artist dies.
There’s no doubt that “Nevermind” is a great album but in no way is it original as they obviously got their cues from great bands like The Pixies, The Replacements, Early Cheap Trick, and Bowie.
Pearl Jam have made music that has reached the leval of Nirvana and Eddie Vedder is one of the most powerful lead vocalists to come out since Robert Plant.
Without a doubt…Ten, Vitalogy, and the Avocado album are masterpieces so let’s give these veterans of rock their fair due.
Pearl Jam are a great band that has shown staying power and consistant musical reward.
CHEERS!
STRATCAT

Aaron D. | 11/12/2006, 6:19 pm EST

I pick Nirvana over Pearl Jam, but how can someone argue against Pearl Jam’s staying power? They’re on their eighth album and have been around for 15 years! Any band with a single (”World Wide Suicide”) topping the modern rock chart and a top 10 album after 15 years and 8 albums has staying power.

Having said that, I still prefer Nirvana. I think it would’ve been cool to hear what they would’ve done after In Utero had Kurt not offed himself. I think they would’ve had a Stones/Beatles style rivalry that probably would’ve kept both bands on top of their game musically.

Or I could be totally wrong.

Gabe | 11/12/2006, 6:05 pm EST

Ok I like Pearl Jam and Nirvana, but Nirvana wins because they represent the whole grunge thing more accurately. And all you Oasis people, come on. They made one good album, and a ton of half-assed ones. Blur wins no contest.

Umm.. Frank, “Polly” is the most boring song written by any band of the grunge era. No Pearl Jam song ever came close to being as boring as Polly.

Dear Franky Moron | 11/12/2006, 5:05 pm EST

Franky boy who knows nothing about music wrote this,

“Pearl jam are repetitive and boring, thier best cd was thier greatist hits cd, because at least the singles are a little different. ”

You mean to tell me Cobain screaming “Yeah” over & over & over & over again in Lithium isnt repetitive you stupid idiot kid? How about the recycled riff from SLTS he used in ‘Rape Me’ only one album later? That wasn’t repetitive you moron?

Nirvana were 1000 times more repetitive than Pearl Jam… which is why KIDS like you like Nirvana more - It doesn’t require you to use your brain unlike Pearl Jam

How bout a little glam rock battle:
Bowie vs. Roxy Music (Bryan Ferry’s original band)

I pick Bowie and Reed.
What do ya think.

frank is right, they don’t have any staying power like nirvana, pear jam is awesome but nirvana has more ability to be listened to, and liked. I guess it’s because pearl jam is so repetitive

Frank said

“You can’t just make 3 good albums and then copy them every other record.”

Those three albums are better than Nirvan’s only three records!

frank | 11/12/2006, 3:41 pm EST

my point exactly cock boy, we could argue this point until the end of time and niether of us would budge, well you would a little because you’re riding eddie’s dick, but otherwise, this will never end.

Daniel | 11/12/2006, 3:40 pm EST

People who so heavily praise Nirvana are funny. They call Pearl Jam’s latest albums “boring” (like Nevermind wasnt?) yet you know if Nirvana came out with any one of them - Binaural; Yield, Riot Act or Avocado - the same exact albums with the same music, only kurt singing instead of Eddie - Nirvana fans would be praising it as brilliant.

Bunch of phonies.

MESSAGE TO FRANK - BELOW | 11/12/2006, 3:35 pm EST

Franky wrote this,

“you pearl jam fans are totally biased, when you hop off of eddie’s dick then come talk to us, the last few albums from pearl jam all sound the same, boring, not very creative and forced sounding. If you can’t come to grips with that, then maybe you deserve eddie squirting some pearl jam all in your ears and on your face for being such dumbasses. and P.S. Nirvana was better then and even though he’s dead, he’s better now, he still sells(since you PJ fans think record sales documents how good a band is, good call”backstreet boys-Nsync)need I say more, and pearl jam doesn’t anymore because they suck now. You can’t just make 3 good albums and then copy them every other record. ”

Pearl Jam’s last few albums do not sound the same you moron… If you think their latest self-titled sounds ANYTHING like ‘Binaural’ then you are TONE-DEAF, & you MUST BE to think Nirvana was better. But of course you’re just shooting the crap & haven’t listened to any of Pearl Jam’s latest albums most likely & just said that because you want any excuse to bring down Pearl Jam since there isn’t a real reason you can use.

And your argument about album sales doesn’t work… Nsync & BSB sold tons of albums because of how promoted they were… it’s PROMOTION that sells albums you idiot….

Nirvana had MORE music videos than Pearl Jam, did MORE interviews - Kurt even called MTV & told them to play Nirvana’s music videos more… Something Eddie Vedder NEVER did… Despite Nirvanas best efforts to be promoted, they STILL couldn’t catch up to Pearl Jam…

But why? Why would Pearl Jam be selling so many more albums than Nirvana even though Nirvana was more commercial & promoted…?

Why?

BECAUS E EVERYONE KNEW PEARL JAM WAS BETTER.

Insync vs. The Back Steet Boys

Nicleback vs. Puddle of Mud

K-Fed vs. Jessica Simpson

Jared from Subway vs. Ruben Studderd

Wham vs. George Michael

Black Michael Jackson vs. White Michael Jackson

The sound of Paris Hilton signing vs. The sound of Paris Hilton getting fucked

Tom York vs. Clay Aiken

I agree with those who chose pearl jam over nirvana. They have been around for 15+ years and nirvana was highly overrated.
I would add Zep vs. Who (Zep being the winner bar none). And, who’s talking about Fall Out Boy and Panic! at the Disco? They sound exactly the same!

yoyo ma | 11/12/2006, 8:55 am EST

are we talking musically??

the beatles trumps all the bands musically- listen to the white album and even radiohead can’t hold a candle to them and nirvana, please! listen to john lennon guys!

ljdj | 11/12/2006, 12:16 am EST

Ace | 11/11/2006, 11:54 pm EST

Well that’s your opinion I guess but I disagree…I don’t think the Foo’s come close at all.

Well Vedder is very passionate…he stands for something…he has integrity which is something that is very light on today in the rock world.

Ace | 11/11/2006, 11:50 pm EST

Still if you grab a bunch of Pearl Jam songs from those albums…a random bunch…and grab a bunch of Nirvana’s you’re going to get alot more different and interesting stuff from Pearl Jam. They showed alot more range during the same period of time.

i am from europe... | 11/11/2006, 11:48 pm EST

PS: does anyone notice that no one hear gives a damn about the hiphop shit….

Aaron D. | 11/11/2006, 11:47 pm EST

Let’s see, the Foo Fighers have better songs. “No Way Back” is better than anything Pearl Jam’s come up with since Yield. Plus, you don’t get Vedder’s self-righteous wailing.

Aaron D. | 11/11/2006, 11:45 pm EST

If “All Apologies” isn’t an example of evolution when compared to their two previous albums, then I guess I actually am the only one who’s listening.

Second, Ten, Vs., and Vitalogy weren’t exactly diverse.

Ace | 11/11/2006, 11:42 pm EST

Grohls lyrics are so weak, and their sound is so generic

Ace | 11/11/2006, 11:40 pm EST

Of course i’m listening…

oh please now don’t tell me about how diverse Nirvana were across 3 albums…they did nothing to tell me that they had evolved whatsoever.

Three identical albums? Are you even listening?

Last time I checked, half of Pearl Jam’s new one is “Do the Evolution” rehashes.

Ace | 11/11/2006, 11:34 pm EST

by the way, this does’nt even make sense…

“how many times can you imitate your own sound when it’s really not even as good as temple of the dog you jerk off”

You have no idea what you are on about!

Ace | 11/11/2006, 11:32 pm EST

Well that just sums you up…if you think Temple of the Dog is the best stuff from these guys…well you must also think The Foo Fighters and Audioslave are gods.

Don’t forget we’re talking about Pearl Jam and Nirvana here…you just said pearl jam are repetitive well at least they’re not as repetitive as Nirvana…who made three identical albums! That’s repetitive.

No i don’t think you get the big picture…I think it’s people like you that are responsible for state of rock music today! You follow whatever is hot like a sheep!

Aaron D. | 11/11/2006, 11:30 pm EST

First, it’s unfair to compare Pearl Jam and Nirvana because not only were they entirely different musically, Nirvana didn’t really have the chance to expand creatively like Pearl Jam had. They had already started to evolve with In Utero.

Having said that, comparing Pearl Jam with the Foo Fighters is a whole other matter. As sacreligious as this may sound, I’d rather listen to the Foo Fighters than either Nirvana or Pearl Jam.

Maybe I’d favor Pearl Jam if No Code wasn’t unlistenable, and Binaural and Riot Act weren’t boring.

*The preceding was just an opinion. Don’t get your panties in a twist if you don’t agree.

frank | 11/11/2006, 11:11 pm EST

you just basically said that if you make atmospheric music that isn’t good than it really is good because you have to think about why it’s good, you think pearl jam can do no wrong so you listen to crap like binaural until you realize why you wasted money on it. trust me, you may think that i am not getting the big picture but I see the what matters to me and alot of others. Of coarse the average pearl jam fan will defend them to the death but if you want atmospheric and thought provoking listen to pink floyd or get some led out, don’t listen to some band like pearl jam and preofess them as god’s, for heaven’s sake, they’re so repetitive it’s not even funny, how many times can you imitate your own sound when it’s really not even as good as temple of the dog you jerk off

Ace | 11/11/2006, 10:55 pm EST

Oh dear god…FRANK…

Crap to you might be a song that does’nt sound as catchy as others. That’s what sets Pearl jam apart from bands like Audioslave, Foo Fighters, RHCP and even U2 and Coldplay. Pearl Jam put the atmosphere and meaning of a song before ‘catchyness’. Their music, and particularly their later music, is written to extend the listener…take them out of their comfort zone. So while Grohl is chanting “best of you” and after two weeks you feel like killing the guy because the song has a shelf life of two months and drives you crazy after 3 months, Vedder and the boys are making unique little songs that speak more and encourage the listener to think further.

Binaural >> Anything the Foo Fighters have put out.

frank | 11/11/2006, 10:03 pm EST

what defines a good song? The technicality of the music or the sound, style and ability to grasp you and make you believe that they are true emotions of what the artist is feeling. If the latter is true than I would go with Nirvana, hear me out before you bash, I love pearl jam, but I have to say that anyone who could listen to they’re albums and honestly tell me there are no filler songs is completely delusional, they are great musicians, but listen to binaural or riot act, they have the ability to write great songs but often I find that they write a lot of crap also. Pink Floyds music is amazing, but guess what, it’s not hard to play by a longshot. I think joe satriani is an amazing guitarist but I also think that it isn’t captivating and it is rather dry, so in my opinion Pink Floyd would win, the same way I say that Nirvana wins, because it’s heartfelt, believable, catchy and kurt was very carasmatic. There was something about that band that was electric, and it’s not because he played solo’s or was a virtuoso, it’s because he put everything he had into it. I honestly believe that if you listen to every pearljam record you will find them dry, repetitive and very forced by thier own boundries. It wasn’t genuine. Anyways, here’s a good comparison Pearl Jam vs. Audioslave

When it comes to lyrics, sound, style and influence, Pearl Jam wins over Nirvana. Nirvana had their own style alright, all their songs sound alike! They all mean the same thing and they all have the same chords, or close at least. There’s just no art in them.

Margo | 11/11/2006, 9:25 pm EST

The Best: Nirvana, Metallica, Oasis, Christina (Britney is no where near Christina’s level!); and Led Zep = The Who? Bullshit!
Zeppelin is way better, they’ve made so many classic songs.

el kapitana | 11/11/2006, 9:14 pm EST

Definitely Pearl Jam over Nirvana.

Hey, what about the Beatles vs The Who? I know the Beatles win millions more of fans and record sales, but The Who really spoke to the youth. Pete Townshend is a genius. So I go with the Who.

I am afraid that I am not going to go against the grain here.
Pearl Jam is much better than Nirvana. We have to give Eddie Vedder cudos for not blowing himself away the way that Kurt Cobain did.
Also, Christina is better than Briney. That girl can sing. No lip sinking there.

Oasis may have been the one to hit it big, but Blur has been consistently good, whereas Oasis has degenerated into a shlock band who pilfers Beatles songs for hits. Damon is a more deft lyricist and Graham is a more inventive guitarist

Pearl Jam was more popular and sold more records and played to bigger crowds when both bands were going. It wasnt till after Cobain died that Nirvana became more popular. Pearl Jam hands down.

Pearl Jam > Nirvana. A huge fan of both bands, but it’s easily Pearl Jam who wins this debate. Not fair to compare Pearl Jam because they’ve been around 15+ years? Okay, we’ll come Ten, Vs., and Vitalogy with Nevermind, In Utero, and Bleach. Pearl Jam wins, hands down. In terms of on the stage, Pearl Jam dwarfs Nirvana, even if you compare the 91-94 Pearl Jam shows. In terms of pure musicianship, Pearl Jam, again, dwarfs Nirvana. Eddie is one of the most gifted and unique vocalistis of the ’90s, and his voice sends shivers down my spine. McCready is an extremely talented guitarist, and Stone is no slum either, writing some incredible memorable riffs. Kurt Cobain was sub-par at most when it comes to guitar. Lyrically, Cobain’s most strong point, Eddie puts up a strong fight, maybe even coming out on end. In nearly every category, Pearl Jam wins. Popularity? Vs. outsold In Utero. Pearl Jam has developed into one of the most prominent, meaningful bands of the last ten years. They still put on sold out arena shows across the country, and still are incredibly popular, without doing anything commercially, or at least to a certain extent. They’re a cult band, and put on easily one of the best shows around. They’re still one of the best selling and most sought after live bands around. They’re like red wine, they get good with age.

Long Live Pearl Jam - Long Live The Kings.

Hunter | 11/11/2006, 3:14 pm EST

Someone responded to me with this,

“Hunter since you are 23 you obviously dont realize just how big Nirvana were when Kurt was still alive, a band has not been that big or in the limelight so much since the Beatles.”

But since Pearl Jam was outselling Nirvana by quite a lot… That doesn’t fit too well with your logic does it? Are you implying Pearl Jam was bigger than the Beatles? Because Nirvana certainly wasn’t bigger than Pearl Jam…. “bigger” is all about who sells more albums, & in that case, numbers dont lie…

rustyshackleford | 11/11/2006, 3:11 pm EST

Pearl Jam is the better band. Nirvana was definitely very good. I cannot stress how good Cobain was at writing simple, naked, wrenching songs. However, Pearl Jam wins in several categories. One, they are by far the better musicians. Cobain could never play guitar like either McCready or Gossard. Novoselic cannot beat out Ament when it comes to bass. Vedder has a better voice as well. Two, Pearl Jam wins in their versatility. They have been able to write such good songs over their career. They have incorporated different styles and influences to make their own sounds. To say that Nirvana was the most creative of the Seattle bands is just false. They were not creative. Good, yes, but not creative. Cobain was great. He could write great lyrics that were angsty and sad, but Vedder and the rest of Pearl Jam have always been able to write songs that were more complex and diverse. So, in musicianship and lyrics, Pearl Jam wins. Not to mention Pearl Jam’s live shows are some of the best of the last 20 years or so. They do marathon sets and they know how to jam and extend songs.

Pearl Jam is so much better than Nirvana its an insult to PJ to even compare them to Nirvana… had Cobain not offed himself he would have faded away cos he was a talentless druggie who wrote lyrics that made absolutely no sense.

Only losers kill themselves… so that kinda speaks for itself.

Pearl Jam are the greatest band in the world… they trump U2 in my opinion. U2 should feel honoured to be able to have PJ open for them in Hawaai cos they are also a bunch of hasbeens.

With all due respect to the people who may disagree, I gotta say that there is no comparison between The Beatles and The Rolling Stones, I gotta give it to the Beatles in every category. (except maybe live performance because I’ve never seen either of them, but I have heard that the Beatles live were unlike anything ever seen again, and that was before a lot of their best work.)

marnr67 | 11/11/2006, 1:01 pm EST

I will submit that yes, Pearl Jam was an immensely important band and that they are legends.

But i still fucking hate them.

marnr67 | 11/11/2006, 12:59 pm EST

Dear Crazy Mary-

its people like you that make me hate pearl jam.

It’s great that they’re talented but i agree with the following quote that they are unspeakably lame:

“Eddie Vedder was the Michael Bolton of grunge music”
- Trey Parker

No Pearl Jam fan knows the quality of good catchy music. Nor do they realize Nirvana had little to do (influence/sound wise) with their Seattle comrades. They were in caliber with the Pixies, the Meat Puppets, Husker Du, REM etc.

No Pearl Jam fan gets that… bc they’re too busy beating off to the Grateful dead.

I fucking hate pearl jam. Nirvana was better and Pavement topped off the cake.

Maybe I could get into them if Pearl Jam fans weren’t such assholes about what Nirvana was.

Crazy Mary | 11/11/2006, 12:50 pm EST

PEARL JAM is about 100x more talented than Nirvana was or would have ever been

ALthough its close, I think Neil Young is better than Bob Dylan

GB | 11/11/2006, 12:30 pm EST

PJ Vs. Nirvana
Here’s the problem: These two bands are good for two different reasons. Pearl Jam is the bad with all of the albums, most of them good and some of them underrated. Nirvana, on the other hand, right now are legends of rock. Not saying Pearl Jam isn’t, but who can disagree? Nirvana has the epics, and Pearl Jam has the time and has been going on 10+ years. I have to say Pearl Jam wins this one, because who knows what Nirvana would end up as?

Metallica Vs Megadeth
Metallica wins this one. Megadeth’s experimental’s are good, but it can’t compete with Metallica.

Blur Vs Oasis
Oasis wins, because Oasis represents the whole British Pop sound a lot more. Also, when you think of brit-pop, you think of Wonderwall, and that entire album. It’s come to be a classic.

Britney Vs Christina
Christina wins this one by far. She has a lot more creativity when it comes down to songs, and she can actually sing, and people can actually listen to it and say, “I Like Her Voice.”

David Lee Roth Vs Van Halen
Both lose. David Lee Roth with Van Halen win all.

THE BIG ONES!

U2 Vs REM
Two totally different things to me, but if you wanted me to really pick a winner, I would have to say U2. U2 defined the sound of the 80’s, and they continue to play music just as good as before. REM is a little more edgy and interesting, but song by song, U2 wins hands down.

Jay-Z Vs Nas
I couldn’t pick a winner here. If the two of them had a rap battle, it would be undetermined. Nas has the better album (Reasonable Doubt by Jay-Z VS Illmatic by Nas), but Jay-Z has the better collection. Jay-Z has the best flow, but Nas has the best rhymes. It’s dead split. If the two had a battle, that would be the only way to decide…Even though sources say both are friends now, I’d like to see it happen.

nwark | 11/11/2006, 11:24 am EST

For me the whole issue of Pearl Jam vs. Nirvana i quite simple: I liked Nirvana instantly as oppose to Pearl Jam, but on the other hand I only listen to Pearl Jam still of the two. I think it has to do with Nirvana being successful because of the circumstances at the time they came out, while Pearl Jam remains great since their musical qualities transcends from the time it was written.

Madumdum | 11/11/2006, 11:19 am EST

Nirvana - Compare their discipline, power and economy to Pearl Jam’s sloppiness, overindulgence and overseriousness. Nevermind is overrated, but In Utero and Unplugged are front to back haunting and brilliant, while Pearl Jam has not released an album I can bear to listen to end to end.

Metallica

Blur - Oasis is perhaps the most overhyped band of the nineties. Liam’s two-note, off-key snarls are matched only by his brother’s incompetent lyrics. There’s nothing remotely Beatlesesque about them. Blur wrote tight, challenging tunes.

Christina for the vocals, Britney for the tabloids

David Lee Roth and Van Halen both blow.

Kliffee | 11/11/2006, 10:24 am EST

Pearl Jam is good but nirvana are better.
DLR & VH are half of what they were together.
Blur shoots a better load than Oasis can write a song.

jdawgnoonan | 11/11/2006, 9:50 am EST

I enjoyed Nirvana but always preferred PJ. Vedder wrote better lyrics and PJ experimented with different types of music.

Nirvana had great energy and angst but their music lacked any complexity. Maybe the lack of complexity is what made them great…I don’t know, I never “got it”. However I would guess that most people who did “get it” would think I was wrong.

Europa | 11/11/2006, 9:49 am EST

I agree with taint.

Anyway, Stone Gossard plays in PJ.

Andrew | 11/11/2006, 9:48 am EST

The reason why they have a rivalry is because they hated each other…or rather, because Kurt Cobain hated Pearl Jam. Just because Mike McCready can fly like Hendrix doesn’t mean that they’re all of a sudden “cock rock” (Cobain). Pearl Jam wins in a slugfest.

taint | 11/11/2006, 9:32 am EST

Jack | 11/11/2006, 6:44 am EST

I don’t wanna compare Pearl Jam to Nirvana. Nirvana was good but Pearl Jam were/are the best. There’s nothing like Eddie, McCready and and Ament on the scene. Such intensity lifts them way beyond Nirvana. Furthermore Pearl Jam made better songs then and make better songs now.

Mr Bean | 11/11/2006, 6:40 am EST

Pearl jam Vs Nirvana.

This topic has been driven into the ground. Both bands are/were great.

BUT

Pearl Jam are more diverse and overall probably a little more talented. Vedder’s lyrics are more complex and he takes in alot more issues, hence opening up more people’s eyes. Not saying Cobain’s material is inferior, hey it’s all subjective…remember it’s ‘art’, but Vedder wrote/writes better songs IMO.

Pearl Jam’s music is little more complex as well…you just need to listen to a bunch of Nirvana songs to realise that they all have an extremely similar formular. Pearl Jam mixed it up a little more. Does that make Pearl jam better…not sure. But i think it’s safe to say that over three albums Pearl Jam evolved more and ultimately challenged themselves more than Nirvana…and still managed to remain relevant.

Kurt killed himself, now he’s a legend…he would have become one anyway but if he were still alive today and Vedder took his own life back in the day, well lets just say Ten would be topping best album lists and Vedder would be considered one of the best all time lyricists.

And finally, the two monster albums…Ten and Nevermind…from start to finish I have always found Ten a much more complete effort, it just has everything…it takes you to another place. And i think it is a good reflection on which was the better band. Not to mention the fact that Pearl Jam has gone on to produce some amazing albums up to this day.

Someone wrote,

“But Hendrix is from Seattle… then again i guess you can’t really call him a band all by himself. I’d still like to note that Pearl Jam doesn’t hold a flame. ”

Pearl Jam doesn’t hold a flame to Hendrix? Hendrix doesn’t hold a flame to Pearl Jam. Hendrix may of been a better guitar player than Pearl Jam… But his singing & lyrics were SHIT compared to Eddie Vedder’s & Pearl Jam has all around better songwriting… People like you just say people like Hendrix are better than bands like Pearl Jam because of Hendrixs legendary status, you don’t judge it by the music, in which case Pearl Jam tramples Hendrix.

saad | 11/11/2006, 2:35 am EST

my take on two of them…

nas vs. jay z…this is a no contest first round knockout 16 seconds into the match…in favor of nas…yes jay z has sold more…and people seem to love his shit…but listen to the muthafucker…he sux…he steals words from other people…like “jigga” from j.d. and h to the izzo from snoop dogg…plus all he does is seek out the best of the best producers to make the songs beats so tight…that people forget that his rap is incredibly wack…even the dis records nas destroys him…plus nas has illmatic…and stillmatic under his belt…and while white boys and girls all over the world have young hova…which seriously…must be the gayest most retarded nickname of all time…in their ipods next to britney and fall out boy…while the backpackers and hip hop heads…have nas playing along side some wu-tang and tribe called quest classics…no contests…

ABOUT THE PEARL JAM VS. NIRVANA DEBATE

I consider it insulting to compare Pearl Jam to Nirvana…

Pearl Jam is light years ahead of Nirvana… even when Kurt was alive, Pearl Jam was still much more idolized… It was only AFTER Cobain died that Nirvana started to get on the same level as Pearl Jam in culture

Even Rolling Stone magazine themselves gave ‘Nevermind’ 3 stars, & ‘Ten’ 4 stars.

What changed? Has society just been brainwashing each other for years into believing Nirvana were better & more important than they were? Yes, that’s exactly what happened.

Im 23… I never considered Nirvana to be the voice of my generation… I always found it odd that 40-50 year old music critics would tell me who the voice of my generation was. What’s more odd is that a lot of people from my generation listened to them… Not by coincidence is it the same kids who also like Green Day & Korn.

If you were to only compare Pearl Jam’s first 3 albums, to Nirvanas first 3…

Ten vs. Bleach
Vs. vs. Nevermind
Vitalogy vs. In Utero

Pearl Jam wins, all three times… Theyre all better than the relative Nirvana albums…. And Pearl Jam has 5 more albums + a rarities album after that. ‘Ten’ is simply more passionate & magical than ‘Bleach’… ‘Vs’ sounds like the type of album ‘Nevermind’ tried to be, but didnt have the creativity or energy to pull it off.. & ‘Vitalogy’ IS a darker, more brooding & diverse album than ‘In Utero’ & all around more interesting.

So the idea of Pearl Jam vs. Nirvana is ludicrous - If Cobain never died, there would be no argument.

Didn’t Jimi Hendrix say the best career move you can make is dying? Kurt proved it.

If Lou Reed died after the first 3 Velvet Underground albums… Would the Velvet Underground be bigger & more talked about today than Pink Floyd?

Does that seem outrageous to suggest? Or unrealistic?
… Now you know how I feel to see Pearl Jam constantly compared with Nirvana

Jeff | 11/10/2006, 11:14 pm EST

Yes, and I’m sure Pearl Jam never learned anything about guitar playing or recording while recording “Ten” or “Temple of the Dog”…that’s retarded to say that Cobain never did anything himself…M. McCready is great, but I’ve read many times about how he learned the tricks of the trade while recording “Temple”, so just cause Cobain was a crap guitar player compared to Mike/Stone, it doesn’t mean everything. It makes more sense to view him as a songwriter, a damn fine one at that. He wrote great, SIMPLE, and instantly memorable tunes. Each band, Pearl Jam and Nirvana, is great for different reasons…Yes Pearl Jam has McCready, but Nirvana had Dave Grohl, the best drummer of the modern age; Nirvana defintely had the better run of singles (even Pearl Jam fans admit that PJ has released very questionable singles in the past - “Nothing As It Seems”, anyone?), yet Pearl Jam is hands down, without question, the better live band. So much greatness from one era of music, I love them both.

The Velvet Underground and Lou Reed vs. Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention has always been my favorite rivalry. I believe Zappa called them a “shitty band” on one of his records, and lou reed said he was happy when zappa fell of a stage.

Also there are these great quotes:
“He’s probably the single most untalented person I’ve heard in my life. He’s two-bit, pretentious, academic, and he can’t play rock ‘n’ roll, because he’s a loser. And that’s why he dresses up funny. He’s not happy with himself and I think he’s right.” - Lou Reed

I thought nobody else knew about this! Bleach was a bomb…absolute trash…Now compare Bleach to Ten (both debut records)…Stop the fight!

nurserock1 | 11/10/2006, 10:52 pm EST

Totally Pearl Jam over Nirvana
Its sad that people forget…Kurt Cobain barely had a guitar sound until Butch Vig taught him how Billy Corgan recorded and tracked guitars on the Pumpkins first album “GISH”. Cobain took those sounds and ran with ‘em. Hence the significant difference in guitar tones and textures between Bleach and Nevermind. Yet another example of Cobain being unable to do any thing himself. That first “crunchy” kick of “smells like teen spirit” always tastes like Pumpkin to me…

Phillyboy | 11/10/2006, 10:49 pm EST

No way, Gary.

There is no way you can say that Nirvana were more original than Pearl Jam.

1. Both bands had a completely different sound.

2. Pearl Jam fused more different styles to form their unique sound

3. Nirvana thrashed with fuzzy guitars. There were a ton of bands out there doing the same thing.

4. The only thing Nirvana had on Pearl jam is that their album blew up big first. Does this mean they were better or more original…no way.

Hey I really love Nirvana, but the only thing they had in common with Pearl Jam was Seattle.

For the record Pearl Jam have gone on to become the greatest band that Seattle has ever produced.

Cream vs. Jimi Hendrix Experience

Lynyrd Skynyrd vs. Allman Brothers

its best to apporach this by dissecting the grunge scene out of seattle in general. Pearl Jam may have been the only grunge band to survive and to still be playing after all these years, while quadroupling the total albums of every grunge band combined (thanx to the lovely array of live albums)(p.s. they are even approaching grateful dead and phish type numbers!) but Nirvana was the most original and most innovative of the original seattle bands. Don’t get me wrong, pearl jam released the brilliant album Ten, along with vs. and vitalogy, soundgarden released the good badmotorfinger and took a trip to the grammys for their album superunown, alice in chains had great singles but their albums often lacked in comparison to the other grunge bands, with the exception of the excellent album Dirt.
Metallica was more innovative. A more accomplished band with a better set of albums (with the exception of st. anger)
Oasis in their prime, blur has been more consistent on their records, but in the U.K. oasis was always most popular with blur as a close second. Oasis released the brilliant (yet very beatlesque, which a lot of music can tend to be given their immense influence on pop music)lps’s definately maybe, and (what’s the story) morning glory, while blur basically started the so-called brit pop revolution (along with suede) with thier album modern life is rubbish, followed by one of the best albums of the 90’s parklife, then two albums later reinventing themselves (as great bands tend to do) with their self titled album and scored a hit with one of the nmost popular anthems of all time (song 2) They staged a battle in which they would both release a single on the same day
oasis released roll with it, while blur relased country house, which won. Blur won the battle, but oasis eventually won the war, when their album (morning glory) destroyed blurs (the great escape)
Christina actually realeased an ambitious album this year, and is now being labeled a diva. While she doesn’t have the vocal chops to quite pull that off, she is certaintly more plausible than ms. spears.
Frankly, david lee roth scares me, so van halen

Black Dog | 11/10/2006, 10:33 pm EST

Well i’m not really a huge fan of any of them but i know enough about music to say that PEARL JAM are/were light years ahead of Nirvana.

Nirvana were very over rated…and the fact that we are still talking about him like he was some kind of innovator is the biggest shame.

I think if Kurt did’nt kill himself (or Courtney did’nt) he would be hangin out with Axle Rose.

He was a disgrace of a man…

Ugh, why would anyone care about the last one?

How about Elvis Costello vs. Ray Charles?

Jeff | 11/10/2006, 10:15 pm EST

Nirvana = Pearl Jam (both are absolutely BRILLIANT in their own ways)
Megadeath (Dave still makes great music; Metallica hasn’t put out a good album in decades)
Blur (duh.)
Van Halen (duh.)
Pop stars (why bother.)

Jim | 11/10/2006, 10:14 pm EST

Pearl Jam easily. Had Kurt not offed himself, he’s be another “where are they now”. Metallica, Oasis, no comment, Van Halen..

Dude | 11/10/2006, 10:12 pm EST

Pearl Jam vs. Nirvana: Pearl Jam (because they had more um, talent and good songs)
Metallica vs. Megadeth: They both give me a headache
Blur vs. Oasis: Oasis by as much as anyone can possibly win anything
Britney vs. Christina: This is like picking which chunk of my shit is the best and which is the worst, but Christina cause at the moment she’s less ugly
DLR vs. Van Halen: They both sucked once they parted

How about these obvious ones you missed (and are even bigger than the ones you have up):

2Pac vs. Biggie (hello????): 2Pac

The Beatles vs. The Rolling Stones:
The Beatles, goes without saying

The Who vs. Led Zeppelin: Led Zeppelin

Elton John vs. Billy Joel: Elton

Prince vs. Michael Jackson: Jacko has better music, but I’m not as frightened of Prince

Guns N’ Roses vs. Motley Crue, Guns N’ Roses vs. Nirvana, Guns N’ Roses vs. the city of St. Louis: GNR in a 3-peat!

Axl Rose vs. Slash, Izzy Stradlin, Duff McKagan, Matt Sorum, and Steven Adler: The only of the above listed guys to not have released an album since 1993 is on the left side of that “vs.”

Brandon Flowers vs. Almost Every band on the planet (including the ones he rips off). He needs to learn how to keep his mouth shut, especially when he compares his crappy new album with Ok Computer (Radiohead) which is one of the best albums of all time.

dersh | 11/10/2006, 10:05 pm EST

Nirvana ( i love pearl jam to death tho )
Metallia ( i also love megadeth to death lol
Oasis ( by a long shot ) Christina ( dont really care but she has a better voice )
Van Halen (with David Lee Roth)

anonymous | 11/10/2006, 10:00 pm EST

I once heard britney spears referred to as the madonna to xtina’s cyndi lauper, so xtina ftw. Soundgarden beats pearl jam and nirvana, as as band blur but based on songs oasis, megadeth b/c they covered these boots are made for walkin, and van halen b.c all david lee roth’s good solo stuff was covers

Janet | 11/10/2006, 9:57 pm EST

To “t”

First of all, I’m not a guy.

Second of all, listen to the outstanding production of “Toxic” versus the inferior “Dirrty.” Yes, I recognize that Christina can actually sing while Britney’s vocals are irritating. However, if we look at the overall commercial packages, Britney’s music is better than Christina’s. Yes is full of better musicians than the Sex Pistols, but who left the bigger impact? In the world of popular music, musical talent isn’t the most important thing.

BTW, Pitchfork, possibly the most credible source of music reviews these days, labled “Toxic” the 13th greatest song from 2000-2004 with Christina on the list. That’s because they actually take a look at the music and evaluate it for what it is instead of going assumption that her music sucks.

Also, actually give your own opinion and qualify it instead of just criticizing the words of others.

krackernutt | 11/10/2006, 9:56 pm EST

Back in the day, we saw Pearl Jam as hair metal without the spandex, but with stupid guitar solos and cheesy rock god posturing. Nirvana were pop punk, but with better sound than the crap that passes for pop punk nowadays. Kurt Cobain never complained about being a teenie bopper idol while posing for Tiger Beat Magazine unlike Eddie Vedder, so Nirvana. Panic at the Disco shouldnt even be discussed. they sound like every other mall-ternative rock band with too much makeup. Dave Mustaine actually has brain cells, and never had a nazi fetish unlike James Hetfield: so Megadeath. Oasis has always been bland, they are only good at insulting peoplein the press. The Who vs. Zeppelin? its a tie. The Who credited their blues influences unlike Zeppelin, but Zeppelin ripped of better influences.

pearl jam is to aston martin as nirvana is to suzuki
