Johnny Cash Video Features Lots of Famous Humans, Is Just Okay

11/9/06, 5:55 pm EST

So you may have heard there’s this new Johnny Cash video running around online. The clip (for Cash’s song “God’s Gonna Cut You Down” from new album American V: A Hundred Highways) features, you know, pretty much every remotely rock-related-person on earth, even the inimitable skull-ring-sporting Keith Richards and, um, Justin Timberlake. It’s powerful stuff, even with the presence of Chris Martin and Adam Levine. But we have to say that we aren’t one hundred percent enthralled by the famous-person montage approach. We get that this is supposed to be a tribute, but aside from a few eternally-cool-in-their-own-right characters (the aforementioned Richards, Johnny Depp, Patti Smith, Iggy, etc.) the rest just seem like coattail hangers. We guess even Travis Barker earns some points for knowing whose coattails to hang on.

To be quite honest, the part of the video where Jay-Z does his diamond sign was more of a “look at me!” publicity stunt than his seven concert/seventeen hours thing that you guys talked about.

They could have done a whole lot more with this video. All it is is just a bunch of artists showing how cool they are because they are in a Johnny Cash video.

Stefolo G | 11/10/2006, 6:47 am EST

HAven’t seen the clip. But GOD WHY is the absolutely talentless mama’s boy AdamLevine in a Johnny Cash video? Chris Martin?!? Who directed this shit?!? What has the world come to…

Wondonfu1106@yahoo.com | 11/10/2006, 11:45 am EST

Johnny Cash is the original long cool drink of water to the music scene. You always got someone wantin to rid on someones shirt tails.

Although I was a rocker, who could write better music than Folsum, I Walk The Line, Jackson or have the only TV show Dylan appeared on in the 60’s.

He’s singin to them over there and I can’t wait to here him again!

Dick | 11/10/2006, 12:02 pm EST

Jay-Z, Kanye and Chris Martin ruined this video. Why did those talentless douchebags have to be in this?

Borat | 11/10/2006, 12:15 pm EST

Johnny’s Cash he dead, no?
How he make this video? Is het geeting the divorced from that sexy time Reese Whitherspoons?
I like ! Maybe I meets her and massage her firm buttocks.
Johhny Cash, yes! Walking on the line, yes! very good movie film.

Spo | 11/10/2006, 12:29 pm EST

Very lame, almost disrespectful to Johnny’s legend as a man who did it his way and never followed some stylistic celebrity bullshit like this video shows.

Byron Moore | 11/10/2006, 12:49 pm EST

Ah yes,the usuall suspects,Bono(who will appear at the opening of a paper bag,Kate,Keith and the rest of the celebs who have and had nothing to do with Johnny Cash before he became “cool”this video is pathetic,I can’t go on,this video has made me ill

BORAT BLOWS

rocky | 11/10/2006, 1:14 pm EST

Although the concept itself is despicable (pointless headshots of famous people), some of it works. Bits like Depp playing part of the tune on guitar worked. If the video had minimized its celeb count and focused on a few of them playing/singing along to the song itself (expressing how much Cash means to them even after he’s gone) it would’ve worked much better. Instead it’s mostly a series of random shots of famous people that has nothing to do with anything.

HANK | 11/10/2006, 1:19 pm EST

that video is douchalishous.

kyle | 11/10/2006, 1:20 pm EST

They really should have gone a different direction with this video… or at least had a much better group of people that held close ties to this incredible icon.

they tried to trick me.... | 11/10/2006, 1:50 pm EST

this video should seem to imply that several of these celebrities believe in christ and are willing to be associted with the cross, but i gaurentee thats not the real deal. It’s pretty well known by now what j.cash believed in. When does the last of all things sacred become just another commidity? oops, too late.

Dumb Guy | 11/10/2006, 1:52 pm EST

Too bad that so many of us still alive continue to grow fat off our dead. Jay-Z? Please.

Let the man rest.

Shannon | 11/10/2006, 2:04 pm EST

The ultimate point is this would have been a cool vid if it wasn’t for johnny cash.

Zachra | 11/10/2006, 2:13 pm EST

Kanye West
Adam Levine
Justin Timberlake
Kate Moss
Amy Lee walking in a graveyard? Original idea.
Tommy Lee?
Jewel
Travis Barker
Lisa Marie Presley
Kid Rock
Jay Z
Corrine Bailey Rae
Owen Wilson

All of these do not belong.

Zachra | 11/10/2006, 2:17 pm EST

Shit, and Chris Martin.

And whoever just said that it would be great if it wasn’t for Johnny Cash should really be kicked off this website.

Big Bob | 11/10/2006, 2:24 pm EST

Bob Dylan
Kris Krisopherson
Keith Richards
Shooter Jennings
Hank Williams Jr.
George Jones
Matthew Followill
Willie Nelson
Rick Rubin
these people should have been in the video. anyone have other suggestions?

Bill in CT | 11/10/2006, 2:30 pm EST

Wasn’t there enough Cash footage from his long career that could be put in here instead? The appearance of assorted celebrities makes no sense, and yes, they look as though “look at me, I made in a Johnny Cash video … even though Johnny Cash had nothing to do with the making of it.” Utter nonsense. Good music, poor video.

Zachra | 11/10/2006, 2:33 pm EST

Big Bob,

Scrap that Followill nonesense and you’ve got yourself a deal.

Big Bob | 11/10/2006, 2:41 pm EST

Tell ya what….i’ll lose followill and raise ya a Hank III

ready to kill | 11/10/2006, 3:20 pm EST

Johnny Cash is rolling in his black smelly grave. Kanye West, the dude from Coldplay, Justin, what a bunch of whores. At this point they would only have more credibility if i knew they were addicted to Meth or Heroine. Anyone who feeds into this CRAP, should rot just like johnny cash is right now. Ha

hates popstars | 11/10/2006, 3:22 pm EST

I hate country music, but even i know that Faith Hill has more to do with Johnny Cash than KANYE.

Zachra | 11/10/2006, 3:52 pm EST

Big Bob,

You may be the smartest man alive. Know when to hold ‘em!

fdo pcs | 11/10/2006, 4:00 pm EST

Chris Martin
Kanye West
Justin Timberlake
Kate Moss
Bono
Tommy Lee
Travis Barker
Kid Rock
Jay Z

sooner or later god´s gonna cut them down. im praying for that

Rich | 11/10/2006, 4:20 pm EST

I think all you people are stupid that u complaining about the people who are in the video! As the video is quite cool, its a good tribute to a legend that all those people liked him alot so they decided to take part init as they like jonny cash music just like you! So stop winging about the video and enjoy a great song! Johnny Cash = Legend!

rocky | 11/10/2006, 4:43 pm EST

Two celebs that might’ve made an ounce of sense in the video: Joaquin and Reese. Or at least Haggard and Willie. We did get the guy from Maroon fucking 5 though, thank God!

The Wolf | 11/10/2006, 4:50 pm EST

Don’t worry about the video, how good’s the song! What a legend.

Drunk and Obese | 11/10/2006, 5:03 pm EST

If you watch closely, you can see Kanye saying “Johnny Cash does not care about black people.”

cdubya | 11/10/2006, 5:13 pm EST

Pretty cool flick! I really thought having Brian Wilson almost at the end in black and white was really the bomb… There were some strange ones, but some cool ones, too.

-_-? | 11/10/2006, 5:21 pm EST

some of these people just shouldnt even be in this video.

Big Bob | 11/10/2006, 5:53 pm EST

Oh, I’d like to add Tom Petty to the list of people who should have been in the video

Big Bob | 11/10/2006, 5:59 pm EST

Jerry Lee Lewis as well

heavyhitter | 11/10/2006, 6:48 pm EST

Powerful stuff.

HipsterScienceAlgebraEquations | 11/10/2006, 6:49 pm EST

The man believed in God not celebrity. This video is completely pointless. Whats funny is u listen to the song and go yeah those are the people that the song is talking about.

0311 | 11/10/2006, 8:01 pm EST

What the hell is GOP Douchebag kidRock doing in a video of a song from a DEMOCRAT, not to mention by a bunch of LIBERALS? What an Parasite AssholeBaby, but then again that’s all that republicans are good at—leaching!

notenome | 11/11/2006, 12:43 am EST

so… I can’t make up my mind about this video. Johnny Cash might have been the greatet songwriter of the rock n roll era, certaintly one of the most prolific (and consistent).

This tribute has some of the coolest people on earth in it… Mick Jones, Patti Smith, Keith Richards, Johnny Depp, Iggy Pop…

And also some people whose name shouldnt be mentioned in the same paragraph as Cash’s: Travis Barker (wtf??), Jay Z, Kanye West, Justin Timerlake, Kid Rock, Chris freakin’ Martin… Seriously, if Jessica Simpson showed up, would you have been surprised?

And at the same time it has cool people that have really nothing to do with Cash like Chris Rock… So in the end I just got to see Keither and Mick and the Iguana whilst listening to a very nice Johnny Cash tune… which is great, but does it outweigh the crap? Maybe there IS a profound message to the video… time will tell.

Michael Dodd | 11/11/2006, 3:04 am EST

At least Bob Dylan had enough sense not to be part of this video.

Lenny | 11/11/2006, 6:37 am EST

Awful Video. more than half of the celebs in the video ala Justin Timberlake should of not been in it.

taint | 11/11/2006, 9:37 am EST

it’s not that bad. so timberlake is in it..so what? if he was a fan of cash, then he can’t be all bad, right?

Cliff | 11/11/2006, 11:39 am EST

Rick Rubin and Kris Kristofferson are in the video. Look closer. Kate Moss is in it because she played Delia in the video for Delia’s Gone.

And yes, Johnny Cash was a man of God, but he was famous too, and loved it. He loved sharing music, performing, and traveling the world. Dude hosted a variety show for crying out loud. He’d probably think this was a lot of fun.

Biff | 11/12/2006, 3:29 am EST

Having extra celebrities equals sellling out, and Cash was not a sell out. If you were not a part of Johnny Cash’s life you shouldn’t be in his video after he passed.

Meeno Peluce | 11/12/2006, 12:16 pm EST

As soon as the guy in the beginning says “poor and the down-trodden”, they show Iggy Pop. ouch.

Vin Scully | 11/12/2006, 12:30 pm EST

Peeps that should’ve been in the video

Dylan
Merle Haggard
Petty
Doink the Clown
David Fricke
Ann Coulter
Joaquin Phoenix
Mike Ness
Moses Blah
Steadman
K-Fed
Steve Earle
Dean Rasmussen
Milo Binder
Taylor Hicks
Tom Servo
Jesus

mr. kenny | 11/12/2006, 7:57 pm EST

there’s a t-shirt with a picture of a younger johnny cash scowling and flipping the bird. if the shirt fits wear it.

CashFan | 11/16/2006, 10:02 pm EST

Kate Moss was there because she played Delia in the Delia’s Gone video.

Lisa Marie Presley was the daughter of one of Cash’s oldest friends. No doubt a long time friend herself.

Steve Earle should have been in the vid. as well as Ronnie Dunn from Brooks and Dunn. Other should have beens include..Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon, and Shooter Jennings.

Nic | 12/8/2006, 10:42 pm EST

I have a hard time with Kanye and TDC’s in this video but that’s all. I think it shows that people from every area of entertainment were influenced by Johnny Cash and that his music crossed many boundaries. His music went beyond politics, religion, and celebrity. To me these are people who loved and respected Johnny and his music and those who think it’s a “shirt tail” thing might just be missing the point.

anonymous | 11/9/2007, 3:30 pm EST

i think ice-t should have been in the video rather than than jay-z or kanye since i actually heard him talk about johnny and what a legend he was to paraphase a statement that he said johnny was the original gangst just listent th the lyrics in folsem prison blues i shot a man in reno, just to watch him die that’s some cold stuff. but in all honest i liked the video
