We don’t know how to feel about this Jay-Z marathon tour. On the one hand, it’s kinda cool that he’s going for this gonzo seven shows in seven cities in seventeen hours thing. (Yeah, it’s been amended since the other day. Seven shows now, not eight.) We like the brute spectacle of it all. On the other hand we’re also turned off by the preening look-at-me strategy of his plan. Such a well-designed if obvious bid for attention is effective but cynical, no? What do you guys think? Are you psyched to see/hear about Hova’s “Jay-Z Hangar Tour,” or are you feeling choking on the blatant commercialism?

Psyched not choked. Diddy runs the NY marathon, Hova lifts it a notch.
Jono | 11/9/2006, 5:59 pm EST
Choked maybe too strong a word, but it is quite obviously a publicity stunt. The marathon shows have been done before, Def Leopard did it a whole lot better than Jay-Z will…then again they already had a one-armed drummer for publicity, maybe a future idea for Jay-Z??
Brittany | 11/9/2006, 6:19 pm EST
How long are these freakin shows?
Matt | 11/9/2006, 6:26 pm EST
Wow. That Jay-Z is a dick! Who in their right mind would want to create a lot of publicity for their new album coming out?…I’m pretty sure any publicity strategy would be a “look-at-me strategy”. I don’t think he is trying to draw attention to anybody else.
Veddy Eddar | 11/9/2006, 6:39 pm EST
Yeah, I gotta wonder…Hip-hop being blatantly commercial? No, never….I mean the guy’s gotta clothing line, a string of bars, he owns the New Jersy Nets and runs the biggest label in hip-hop. Do you think that he would want to make some money on the day his record comes out?
I do believe Jono’s comment is the only time Jay-Z and Def Lepard have been mentioned in the same sentence.
Mediocrity Rules (apparently) | 11/9/2006, 6:53 pm EST
Rolling stone….wow. Once i thought of you (as a naive kid) as a cool organization. Now i’m older, wiser and not at all impressed. It’s sad to think I get more info from Pitchfork than the so-called authority on music as rolling stone. I’ll bet you’ll be there all along the way on the Jay-Z Trying Too Hard To Be Talented Tour. Then again you’ll prove that to us as you both knock your artists and totally suck their c*cks. Don’t forget to wipe your mouth when your done Elizabeth.
Floridah Evans | 11/9/2006, 7:15 pm EST
Wow…the nerve of an artist to market themselves and be over the top, flashy and pimp themselves out to sell a few mil…what’ll they think of next, hmmm, possibly more antics to sell records because that is the business right?…
Anonymous | 11/9/2006, 7:59 pm EST
Jay-Z’s pretty sweet…but I wouldn’t wanna have to go see him at 4 in the morning…
heavyhitter | 11/9/2006, 8:41 pm EST
Stupid damn hiphop. Waste of time.
chronication | 11/9/2006, 8:53 pm EST
Seven shows/seven cities/seventeen hours= Can I whore myself out anymore?
Gap Babbot | 11/9/2006, 9:02 pm EST
Mediocrity Rules (apparently) Pitchfork huh?
The canuck | 11/9/2006, 9:04 pm EST
Spinal Tap did it best, playing from coast to coast in Canada on Canada Day.
Nick | 11/9/2006, 10:10 pm EST
Ummm… why do you care? If you don’t want to see Jay-Z at four in the morning than don’t. He can do what he wants. He’s the Jigga Man.
The Ox | 11/9/2006, 10:35 pm EST
You know, all this talk of Pitchfork being the new Rolling Stone is becoming true. At first I thought that Pitchfork was the Rolling Stone for my generation, but after a while, it became just as disappointing. I still discover new music thanks to Pitchfork, but it’s become just as self-righteous and pretensious as any other magazine. Maybe I should start my own and see what happens… Probably the same thing.
herojuana | 11/9/2006, 11:44 pm EST
Jay Z must be planning on having a few rails to keep him energized for that long.
It’s not like he has to play an instrument or something, he just mouths off a lot and struts around. Pretty easy.
Axl Steel | 11/10/2006, 5:36 am EST
herojuana is a moron doing 7 shows in 17 hours is exgusting reguardless of what you are doing, even then singing or rapping in this case is still a talent(weather jay z is good at it is a different topic) His voice might go to hell after a certain amount of shows in that time.
Tom | 11/10/2006, 7:06 am EST
Do not forget that the US has a capitalist system. Rolling Stone and Hip-Hop included.

It´s not racist to hate Hip Hop. Especially when it promotes violence, murder, alcohol, drugs, extensive profanity, objectification of (black) women includes the slavery N-word in their songs; as well as to strengthen stereotypes.
Time for the black people to empower themselve with real urban music , either political or otherwise.
pete | 11/10/2006, 7:55 am EST
Any idiot knows that you want to draw attention for promoting an album. The only thing I’d be worried about would be seeing the second to last or last show. He’d be exhausted. If there are still morons out there that think rap is talentless/effortless, than I challenge them to stop talking and start rapping.
9 | 11/10/2006, 8:10 am EST
Tour cool. Beer Comercials, over the top commercialism. Brothas got pleny a cash so why do commercials?
Jayfra | 11/10/2006, 10:10 am EST
Stop hatin!!!! Jay-Z’s rise to stardom is one of the most compelling stories in MUSIC HISTORY. PERIOD!!!! He has earned the right to do whatever the hell he wants.
charliemapleton | 11/10/2006, 12:10 pm EST
You can only imagine Jay Z confidently riding a Phantom cross country, while HIS TOUR BUS is BEHIND him!GO,HOVA,GO!(horns playing)GO,HOVA,GO!Sike,he’s going to blaze this country nonetheless.
Truth | 11/10/2006, 12:10 pm EST
Jay-Z makes a bazillion dollars a year rapping about how great he is and how pathetic everyone else is. I know it’s all about the dollars, but doesn’t he have enough at this point to start adding a little more originality to his lyrics? His albums should be named, “Listen To How Tight I Am” Vols, I, II, and III. He may have the money, but Nas has the poetry…
SATAN | 11/10/2006, 12:59 pm EST
RAP AINT MUSIC
Jacques Costeau | 11/10/2006, 1:03 pm EST
keep this up and he’s bound to pop a cap in your bum
Vman | 11/10/2006, 1:04 pm EST
make another reasonable doubt or a black album with better beats(the beatles) and all is forgiven.
Jacques Costeau | 11/10/2006, 1:04 pm EST
Is that really satan?
Floydhed | 11/10/2006, 1:25 pm EST
Whoever that was up there that talked about the Budweiser commercials “Brothas got pleny a cash so why do commercials?”, it ain’t about how much money HE makes. Come on! I’m sorry but if Jay-Z is Rich, the guy who runs Anheuser Busch is weathly. Who are they missing in their target demographic???? African Americans. Who is the biggest thing happening AGAIN…Jay-Z. Once they offered enough money for a day of his services, why not take it? If he didn’t it would have been called stupid.
Matt | 11/10/2006, 3:51 pm EST
Tom wrote that hip-hop:
” promotes violence, murder, alcohol, drugs, extensive profanity, objectification of (black) women includes the slavery N-word in their songs; as well as to strengthen stereotypes.”
Yet you try to strengthen a stereotype about hip-hop? Good argument.
The Wolf | 11/10/2006, 4:27 pm EST
He just can’t come to grips with the fact that Tupac didn’t like him and he is doing a massive tour to run away from his feelings. One day he will look in the mirror and say “i can never be as great as tupac” and retire properly.
mcarroll4716 | 11/10/2006, 4:32 pm EST
I don’t get it. Why can’t the man do something that’s pretty much unheard of up to this point in hip-hop. The demand is high and he knows it so why not go out and promote your new album in an innovative way?
I mean when it boils down to it, he’s marketing a product (himself) and this is quite an effective way to do that. Isn’t marketing about drawing attention to products? What’s the big deal?
I think this is a great idea if he can pull it off without lowering the quality a little bit as each show passes.
I agree with 9: “Tour cool. Beer Commercials, over the top commercialism.”
Stephen Westrich | 11/10/2006, 6:12 pm EST
Isn’t a tour supposed to a literal “bid for attention” Can we please stop being so damn cool?
Dude | 11/11/2006, 10:01 pm EST
Are the shows going to be under an hour each or are the towns all within a half-hour’s drive of each other?
A Warrior Mamma | 11/18/2006, 5:15 am EST
Wow, if this type of publicity was carried out by U2 or Bon Jovi, folks would be praising the groups for the ingenuity. And for the record, not all rap music promotes violence, murder, alcohol and drugs…that’s done by any city’s local news…
LARISTOS | 11/18/2006, 11:41 am EST
TO ALL THE HATER’S, IT’S OK !HOPEFULLY ONE DAY YOU WILL GROW TO UNDERSTAND THAT HIP-HOP HAS CHANGED GLOBE. NEGATIVE VIBES GET NEGATIVE RESPONSE!
