Rock List of the…Day After the Elections: Best Records of 2006

11/8/06, 12:15 pm EST

We love those opinionated British magazines, we really do. But even for shameless anglophiles like us, Uncut’s new list of the fifty best albums from 2006 seems kinda, what’s the phrase we’re looking for here, batshit insane?

We’re good with Number One. Modern Times is definitely, if not the best record of the year, in the top two or three. No worries there. But Scritti Pollitti (Number Two)? That album, besides being saddled with the too-cute-for-school title White Bread, Black Beer is actually quite good and we’re all for the SP comeback, but like, um, hello, they put Cat Power’s The Greatest way down at Number Fourteen. We cannot abide by this. And what about the Hold Steady? WHERE THE FUCK IS THE HOLD STEADY RECORD ON THIS LIST? So it’s not out yet in England? That’s what imports are for. Also, we’re just going to come out there and say this, Joanna Newsom (Number Four) sucks. She’s so precious she makes Regina Spektor look like AC/DC. It’s worth pointing out that not everyone in the Rolling Stone office agreees with us on that one, but I think we can all agree that sandwiching Gnarls Barkley (47) between Band of Horses (46) and Muse (48) is an abomination. Discuss.

There is no f**king way that there were 25 albums released this year better than TV On The Radio`s Return To Cookie Mountain.

Zachra | 11/8/2006, 1:00 pm EST

Long Winters’ “Putting the Days to Bed”

Christian | 11/8/2006, 1:05 pm EST

How ’bout:
Beck- The Information
The Hold Steady- Boys and Girls in America
New York Dolls- Someday . . .
Bruce Springsteen- Seeger Sessions

Choosing a “best” album this year was tough, not because there were so many great ones or because there were so few. The real problem was that the great ones this year all had such strong qualities that it was like choosing between the Beatles, Elvis, the Stones, Chuck Berry, James Brown, or Zeppelin as the best artist ever.

Fortune | 11/8/2006, 1:06 pm EST

How is Kasabian`s “Empire” on there? Oh that`s right it`s a British list. That album was such a let down.

Borat | 11/8/2006, 1:08 pm EST

The Bob Dylan’s album waht is best is “Blonde have more fun”.
We very much like the Peter’s Paul with Mary and also the Slayer.
U.S and A rock my roll!

Leopold | 11/8/2006, 1:10 pm EST

Were is da Strokes? Uh? Make fanastik record of first empression to earth. Best record in year. Goot song, goot words. Neat soundings. Is great. Bob Dyaln is too old man now. Old stuf grate. New not so goot

Mike | 11/8/2006, 1:15 pm EST

Bob Dylan’s record was an average record. Not an even an average Dyaln record, just average overall. As a huge Dylan fan, it pains me to say it, but it’s true. I think it recieves good reviews based on Dylan’s legacy alone. Where is the Strokes ‘First Impressions of Earth’? That is definitely top 5 at least. Better than the Arctic Monkey and much better than Jack White’s side project.

Killa | 11/8/2006, 1:15 pm EST

Robbie Williams “Rudebox”
Babyshambles “Down in Albion”
The Streets “The Hardest Way to Make an Easy Living”

If it ain’t popular in the States, it must be worth a listen.

b | 11/8/2006, 1:16 pm EST

“we can all agree that sandwiching Gnarls Barkley (47) between Band of Horses (46) and Muse (48) is an abomination.”

You’re right… Gnarls Barkley is terrible and doesn’t deserve to be in the same sentence as these two bands.

Poindexter | 11/8/2006, 1:17 pm EST

Nah. The Gnarls record is fun enough, but Muse’s new one is not only deserving of placement on a year-end list but of higher placement.

Scott P | 11/8/2006, 1:23 pm EST

Isn’t it a bit early to be coming up with end of the year lists already?? What, did they start this back in August??

Anyways, so far I’d say
Muse – Black Holes and Revelations
Thursday – A City By the Light Divided
The Stills – Without Feathers
My Chemical Romance – The Black Parade

Randy | 11/8/2006, 1:29 pm EST

10,000 days was pretty damn good.

Jeff | 11/8/2006, 1:36 pm EST

STADIUM ARCADIUM

…duh…

Jeff | 11/8/2006, 1:36 pm EST

Oh…correction..

STADIUM ARCADIUM

and

BLACK HOLES AND REVELATIONS by Muse

Brian | 11/8/2006, 1:39 pm EST

Pearl Jam-Pearl Jam
Thom Yorke- The Eraser

Good lord, I thought for sure RS was going to put “Stadium Arcadium” on here, that album would have been a strong single disc, but as a double disc it’s got a lot of filler

Donny | 11/8/2006, 1:40 pm EST

Where the hell is Pearl Jam

Jon | 11/8/2006, 1:45 pm EST

Yeah man, what about:

TV on the radio: Return to cookie mountain??

The roots: Game theory (which this website should feel ashamed about. You give a classic album a paragraph long review, with no actual analysis. SHAME.)

The Eraser for sure.

Ghostface: Fishscale

Will any of you magazines ever stop the Dylan dick-riding?

Donny | 11/8/2006, 1:47 pm EST

The new Pearl Jam album is the best pure rock record in a long damn time and they don’t even mention it. What the F*Ck!!!!

Mark | 11/8/2006, 1:49 pm EST

My favorites thus far, Lupe Fiasco’s Food and Liquor, TV On The Radio’s Return To Cookie Mountain, and Yo La Tengo’s I’m Not Afraid of the Dark.

nathan | 11/8/2006, 1:51 pm EST

The Black Parade – MCR
Stadium Arcadium – RHCP
Game Theory – The Roots
and we haven’t even heard the new Jay-Z yet.

nathan | 11/8/2006, 1:54 pm EST

oh and Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Show Your Bones was great, and how in the hell could they leave out Springsteen’s “We Shall Overcome” Seeger tribute.

Malhecho | 11/8/2006, 1:56 pm EST

y el nuevo disco de Los Lobos?

Malhecho | 11/8/2006, 1:56 pm EST

y el nuevo disco de Tom Waits?

Anonymous | 11/8/2006, 2:02 pm EST

Pearl Jam – Pearl Jam. No question

Matt F | 11/8/2006, 2:03 pm EST

Tool – 10,000 Days
Stadium Arcadium – RHCP
The Black Parade – MCR
DECEMBERUNDERGROUND – AFI

anon | 11/8/2006, 2:05 pm EST

If you think that the Joanna Newsom record sucks, you clearly have poor taste in music. Everyone loves it except Rolling Stone. Seriously, look:
http://en.wikipedia.org/ wiki/Ys_%28album%29

Josh | 11/8/2006, 2:06 pm EST

Some pretty good records actually came out this year. But “Modern Times” demolishes all of them. It’s not only the album of the year, i would say it’s one of Dylans best (top 10). it can also be put in a “100 best albums ever” list in my opinion.Neil Young, Tom Petty,Pearl Jam,Artic Monkeys and Gnarls Barkley made the other standout records. The Racounteurs debut is great also

Dardo | 11/8/2006, 2:06 pm EST

There’s a lot of albums that I haven’t heard this year (and I think there are a couple more that haven’t been released yet). But, so far, my fav ones are:

“Yes Virginia”, The Dresden Dolls
“Begin to hope”, Regina Spektor
“Super extra gravity”, The Cardigans

todd | 11/8/2006, 2:08 pm EST

Arctic Monkeys-
RHCP- Stadium Arcadium
The Tragically Hip- World Container
Pearl Jam- Pearl Jam
The new Dylan is great. It’s got a great vibe.

Jeremy | 11/8/2006, 2:08 pm EST

I’m waiting for the new Damien Rice, but hands down best album of the year: Scott Walker-The Drift.

JeremyTheJollyJew | 11/8/2006, 2:29 pm EST

My #1 goes to Thursday’s A City By The Light Divided, despite the one and a half star review you gave it. Bob Dylan’s up there. The Raconteurs record as well. I like the Cat Power record fine, but it’s not that great. And the Hold Steady sucks.

JeremyTheJollyJew | 11/8/2006, 2:31 pm EST

Forgot to mention, the new Sparta record? Fucking amazing. One of the best of the year and arguably Sparta’s strongest release.

28 songs, maybe 1-2 fillers. after 4 yrs rhcp made awesome album. while modern times is good, i just dnt know how it stands against the chilis’ double album.

G'bye Rummy | 11/8/2006, 3:06 pm EST

Um, heeeeellooo, mutherfucking TOOL “10,000 Days” anyone?

joe | 11/8/2006, 3:07 pm EST

A wierd year for music I thought. I wasn’t stunned by too much this year (whereas the last couple years had some of the best music in years I thought). MuteMath was my favorite record this year, and despite all the other great records I listed, the only real “stunner” with the DJ Shadow influenced samples, solid melodies, atmospheric guitar work, Rhodes, keytar, jazzy bass lines, and Sting influenced vocals (see them live asap!).

MuteMath – MuteMath
Flaming Lips – At War With The Mystics
Josh Ritter – The Animal Years
Thom Yorke – The Eraser
Muse – Black Holes and Revelations
Beck – The Information
Pearl Jam – Pearl Jam
Neko Case – Fox Confessor Brings the Flood
RHCP – Stadium Arcadium
Sufjan Stevens – The Avalanche

EDVedder | 11/8/2006, 3:09 pm EST

I think Pearl Jam made the best album of the year.

rustyshackleford | 11/8/2006, 3:12 pm EST

10,000 Days – TOOL

Carlos Dominguez | 11/8/2006, 3:14 pm EST

TOOL “10,000 Days”

Oddjob | 11/8/2006, 3:16 pm EST

With the exception of Bob Dylan, every album Rolling Stone mentioned above is by an individual or band no one gives a shit about.

Sam | 11/8/2006, 3:20 pm EST

If you’re just rating rock records… then hands down Pearl Jam’s self-titled release takes the best ROCK record of 2006. Don’t discount it just because it does not have an indie label.

dantheman | 11/8/2006, 3:22 pm EST

simply the best…robert randolph and the family band,,,colorblind…a great mix of funk rock stomp gospel ..imagine nelly outcast stevie ray and the allman bros…giving birth to a cd with the blessings of sly stone…this puppy is so flying under the radar…live they may be the best band on the road now

Veddy Eddar | 11/8/2006, 3:23 pm EST

Whose repping hip hop here?

1) The Roots – Game Theory
2) Bob Dylan – Modern Times
3) The Hold Steady – Boys and Girls in America
4) TV on the Radio – Return to Cookie Mountain
5) My Chemical Romance – Welcome to the Black Parade

NaS is gonna be up there, come December.

maddox | 11/8/2006, 3:25 pm EST

i have three words “Broken Boy Soldier”

Veddy Eddar | 11/8/2006, 3:26 pm EST

Special recognition for Trousersnake’s “FutureSex/LoveSounds”–awesom e sound, stupid lyrics. Springsteen’s Seeger Sessions, too.

Unstrung | 11/8/2006, 3:29 pm EST

I love Neil Young, but I don’t know how “Living with War” is that high.

I love Thom Yorke, but I think they’re giving “The Eraser” a little too much credit.

I love Pearl Jam, and I don’t know how the hell their album’s not on the list at all.

Band of Horses should be a hell of a lot higher, and Cat Power too.

Well, Golly | 11/8/2006, 3:31 pm EST

I’m amazed so many people have listed Scott Walker’s Drift. I thought I was alone on that one. I don’t have a full list yet, but I’d include TV on the Radio, Bonnie Prince Billy, Cat Power, Adam Green, the Heartless Bastards, Spank Rock, the Walkmen, Roisin Murphy, maybe The Roots, and did Ryans Adam’s 29 come out in 2005 or 2006?

Jay | 11/8/2006, 3:34 pm EST

RHCP put out a monumental album this year. To the naysayers, FU. I don’t care. How can RU Kidding be taken seriously when his or her comments about Stadium Arcadium are about how the album doesn’t sound like the other RHCP albums. Sorry that they didn’t pull an AC/DC and release another watered-down version of the same album.

Well, Golly | 11/8/2006, 3:37 pm EST

Oh, so the Gnarls Barkley thing: It’s not a great album. It’s a good album, but it has a lot of weak points and I can understand not including it or including it at a low number. Of course, I will say that I listened to it a lot and certainly think it’s fun and well produced. I also hope they release a second album.

TheCourtsAreAJOKE! | 11/8/2006, 3:38 pm EST

T O O L

God damn it all. 10,000 Days is killer, and takes you to another world.

Jay | 11/8/2006, 3:39 pm EST

Attn: Mike. Modern Times is great. SOmeday Baby, Nettie Moore, Working Man’s Blues and Ain’t Talkin are all solid songs. The rest of the Album is also great. If you don’t like Dylan, you probably don’t care about the album.

Phil | 11/8/2006, 3:40 pm EST

It might be a little early (since it was released only a couple months ago) but The Decemberists – The Crane Wife should be on that list… very high on that list.

Jay | 11/8/2006, 3:41 pm EST

Well, Golly: 29 was the 3rd album RA put out in 2005.

cdubya | 11/8/2006, 3:42 pm EST

Carlos is right Ten Silver Drops is the best of the year, nothing even comes close. Just one listen will confirm!

saylor828 | 11/8/2006, 3:48 pm EST

I say Beck’s “Information” should be number 1 if anything for this year. What about Cold War Kids’ “Robbers and Cowards”? That has to be on the list! Decemberists new one too!

dreadhead | 11/8/2006, 3:55 pm EST

If Bob Dylan’s “Modern Times” is in the top three then the music this year really is sub par.

Hoyle T. Berkeley | 11/8/2006, 4:00 pm EST

Paris Hilton is all studio/no musical talent junk as well as 95% of everything else US artists release today. Album of the year should definitely be Bob Dylan’s Modern Times.

Springsteen’s Seeger Sessions.

“The Crane Wife” by the Decemberists.
“Return To the Sea” by Islands

Roger Toonoot | 11/8/2006, 4:08 pm EST

Neko Case Fox Confessor Brings The Flood is the record I played the most this year.

A quick top 5 without too much thought:
Neko Case–Fox Confessor
Bob Dylan–Modern Times
Hold Steady–Boys and Girls in America
Jenny Lewis–Rabbit Fur Coat
Yo La Tengo–I Am Not Afraid…

5. First Impressions of Earth- Strokes

tom wieler | 11/8/2006, 4:21 pm EST

i’m convinced that all of those people who have listed “Stadium Arcadium” just bought it, didn’t unwrap it, stared at the colorful cover, but didn’t actually listen to it. when Andrew said “out of 28 songs, 26 were good and only 1-2 fillers” (or something to that effect) i think what he meant to say was “only 1-2 good songs with 26 fillers.” S.A. had the most poorly written lyrics of any album i bought this year (see “Especially in Michigan” for ONE example). shortly after the release of S.A., this site hosted a poll for which double albums could be reduced to single disc sets, and i suggested S.A. be reduced to a 4-song E.P.

Now that i’ve ranted, my best of list:
1. Ladyhawk – Ladyhawk: the best album you didn’t hear this year
2. Beruit – Guleg Orkestar
3. Dirty Pretty Things – Waterloo to Anywhere
4. Beck – the Information
5. The Strokes – First Impressions of Earth (listed much too little on the rest of these lists)
7. Sam Roberts – Chemical City
8. Nas – Hip Hop is Dead (not out for another month, haven’t heard a second of it, but come on, it’s QB’s finest!!!)
9. the Raconteurs – Broken Boy Soldiers
10. Tapes ‘N’ Tapes – the Loon

In All Fairness I Haven’t Heard The New Dylan Album All The Way,But RS Has An Habit Of Awarding Five Stars To The Man Just Based On The Fact That It’s Dylan. Having Said That,Hear Is My Top 5. 1.Neko Case:Fox Confessor Brings The Flood. 2.Gnarls Barkley:St.Elsewhere. 3.TV On The Radio:Return To Cookie Moutain. 4.Two Gallants:What The Toll Tells. 5.Beck:The Information

Benson | 11/8/2006, 4:45 pm EST

Honest to God, how the hell does anybody put the Flaming Lips’ meager effort above Yo La Tengo. To make matters worse the placed Kasabian, the winner of my Most Souless Band of the year award, ahead of Band of Horses. Any one want to take part in a coup with me?

Canadian Kid | 11/8/2006, 4:48 pm EST

At the top:

1) Jet, Shine on
2) The Elected, Sun, Sun, Sun
3) The Mountain Goats, Get Lonely
4) The Strokes, First Impressions…
5) Matisyahu, Youth
6) Islands, Return to The Sea
7) Damien Rice, 9
8) Lady Sovereign, Public Warning

Late year anticipations:
1) Modest Mouse
2) Tom Waits
3) (+44)
4) Damien Rice (to actually buy the record)
5) Christopher Walla (early 2007)

My disappointments (not saying they’re bad, just don’t like ‘em):
1) Thom Yorke, The Eraser
2) The Killers, Sam’s Town
3) The Vines, Vision Valley
4) M. Ward, Post-War

1)Modern Times -Bob Dylan
2)First impressions -The Strokes
3)Broken Boy Soldiers -The Raconteurs
4)Return to Cookie Mountain -TV on The Radio
5)We Shall Overcome- The Boss

If there is something to be said of risk and relevancy, then look up.

Douchebag | 11/8/2006, 5:15 pm EST

Everybody here is a douchebag (like me :-0) ! These lists suck and everybody thinks they’re a fucking critic. That being said, the best records of the year:

Beck – The Information
Bob Dylan – Modern Times
Springsteen – The Seeger Sessions

Hah! I have better taste in music than anyone!

Douchebag | 11/8/2006, 5:18 pm EST

Bob Dylan – Modern Times
Bruce Springsteen – We Shall Overcome
Paul Simon – Surprise
Bob Seger – Face the Promise
The Raconteurs – Broken Boy Soldiers
Beck – The Information

Just goes to show that music hasn’t come very far in the last 30 years when guys like Simon, Springsteen, Dylan, Petty, Young and Seger are practically the only ones making good music.

kyle | 11/8/2006, 5:24 pm EST

included near the top of that list must be The Flaming Lips ‘At War With The Mystics’, Thom Yorke ‘the eraser’, Pearl Jam, and for sure the latest Johnny Cash (one of my favourite purchases in a long time)

Rumplemeyer | 11/8/2006, 5:32 pm EST

I’d like to respond to your comment “Joanna Newsom sucks” with the most mature, direct comeback that I can come up with, for the moment:

You suck.

Dronevil 10 | 11/8/2006, 5:33 pm EST

Altar by sunno))) & Boris is the best album of the year.

saad | 11/8/2006, 5:34 pm EST

yes..we all are bitching about a list that is just an opinion…but here are a few i think they forgot about or just didn’t listen too…some really do deserve to be on the list..others may not…whatever…in random order…here are some…

Choosing “Modern Times” as Album of the Year is just as embarrassing as when RS gave Mick Jagger’s “Goddess in the Doorway” a 5-star rating; or when the AMPAS gave Denzel Washington the Best Actor Oscar for “Training Day;” or when Steely Dan was awarded the Grammy for Album of the Year over Eminem’s “Marshall Mathers LP.” The constant praise of older artists who are surprisingly turning out adequate material late in their careers shouldn’t be mistaken for genius. “Modern Times” is very good, but it’s Top-20-of-the-Year good at best. Yes, the lyrics are there and the musicianship is tight, but too many of the grooves are repetitive and generic. Also, from a strictly lyrical standpoint, Cursive’s “Happy Hollow” is a more accurate and compelling picture of the mess in America today (even though the actual songs leave lots to be desired).

The albums that demanded way more praise and attention this year were:

1. The Hold Steady – Boys & Girls in America
2. Ghostface Killah – Fishscale
3. TV on the Radio – Return to Cookie Mountain
4. The Raconteurs – Broken Boy Soliders
5. Neko Case – Fox Confessor
6. Pearl Jam – Pearl Jam
7. Mastodon – Blood Mountain
8. Gnarls Barkley – St. Elsewhere
9. Alejandro Escovedo – The Boxing Mirror
10. Tool – 10,000 Days

Hunter | 11/8/2006, 6:02 pm EST

Pearl Jam’s 8th self-titled album this year is undoubtably the best album of the year. And I bought Modern Times the day it came out.

See You at the Races | 11/8/2006, 6:09 pm EST

“Choosing “Modern Times” as Album of the Year is just as embarrassing as when RS gave Mick Jagger’s “Goddess in the Doorway” five stars”

. . . um, no it’s not — one’s great, the other isn’t. But a knee-jerk asshole who didn’t bother to listen to the two records might think so.

Nel Armando | 11/8/2006, 6:15 pm EST

My Chemical Romance – The Black Parade

Reverend | 11/8/2006, 6:39 pm EST

As a classic rock DJ, I have to say that the last couple years have been a saving grace for classic rock.

Personally, I have my own list:

1. Tom Petty- Highway Companion
This album ranks right up there with “Wildflowers” which is still my favorite Petty album.

2. Red Hot Chili Peppers- Stadium Arcadium
Whoever says the Peppers couldn’t follow up Californication are dead wrong. They did twice in a row with “By the Way” and now with “Stadium Arcadium”.

3. Johnny Cash- American V: Hundred Highways
Such a haunting album that does show the genius behind Johnny Cash, the performer.

4. Bob Dylan- Modern Times
Damn fine album, but not the finest of the year. I still have to compare it to “Time Out of Mind” which to me is the best album that Dylan has put out in the last 15 years.

5. Pearl Jam- Pearl Jam
Clearly their best since “Ten”.

So, those are just my picks. I know that this will be highly disputed, but that’s ok. God knows that we Reverends love stirring up controversy.

;) | 11/8/2006, 7:04 pm EST

Terry F…don’t be a hater, just cuz Anthony can still kick your ass and has a gorgeous voice and still has fans of the young female persuasion doesn’t mean you should make an ass of yourself…wait, o yea you ARE making one of yourself, go ahead then!

yea, the chili’s made an album,..just about anybody who made an album beats BOb dylan but especially when its the Flea, John Frusciante, Chad Smith and Anthony Kiedis (yay!) combo, bob gets kicked to the curb!

threapy | 11/8/2006, 7:07 pm EST

bob dylan is gay i can’t stand him whats the big deal i was alive in the 60’s who cares your music sucks no one cares about you only idiots like rollingstone who don’t care about music only pollitics and a fashion statement dylan blows
dylan blows
dylan blows

you get it he f’n blows

Micah | 11/8/2006, 7:15 pm EST

I don’t have my own list made up but this comment is for therapy. You think Bob Dylan blows? that’s fine. but KEEP IT TO YOURSELF. no need for all the negative hate. Any artist that has enhanced your life throughout the years can give a big thank you to Dylan. You should at least appreciate him, even if you don’t like his music. But he doesn’t F’n Blow by any means.

I understand opinions are opinions, but if you don’t love Stadium Arcadium, you have no soul.

“Warlocks” is the only weak/generic/predictable track on the whole thing.

I’ll cast my vote for Chinese Democracy as a joke.

RS – you SWEAR it’s coming out this year? Not looking very bloody likely at this point unless the whole media empire is keeping a huge secret.

ryan | 11/8/2006, 7:45 pm EST

it’s definately not the best list but i’ve seen worse in rollingstone. dylan’s new record is definately not the best album of the year as a huge dylan fan i can honestly say it’s only a average album. truth is there have been a ton of good albums this year and any list is going to have a few weird one’s on it but more good than bad. british people love joanna newsom and i’m not sure i get it either.

BobRug | 11/8/2006, 7:46 pm EST

I’m a huge Dylan fan…have most of the records, read all the books, etc. “Modern Times” is very good, but it’s not as good as “Love and Theft”…which itself was not as good as “Time Out of Mind.” Top Ten of the year…maybe. Number #1? No way.

edseif | 11/8/2006, 7:48 pm EST

I’d have Dylan in my top ten, maybe, but not above these:
1. Yo La Tengo-I Am Not Afraid of You….
2. Emmylou Harris/Mark Knopfler-All the Roadrunning
3. New York Dolls-Someday It Will Please Us…
4. Pearl Jam
5. Chris Smither-Leave the Light On
(which includes a version of Visions of Johanna!)
6. Elvis Costello/Allen Toussaint-The River In Reverse
7. Neil Young-Living With War
8. Beck-The Information

6) Neil Young – Living With War
5) Raconteurs – Broken Boy Soldiers
4) The Hold Steady – American Boys And Girls
3) Blowoff – Life With A View
2) Sonic Youth – Rather Ripped
1) Beck – The Information

Tyson | 11/8/2006, 8:02 pm EST

Once Axl releases Chinese Democracy, that is sure to be one of the best of the year!!!

beckafella | 11/8/2006, 8:04 pm EST

I would like to agree with everyone who has mentioned The Strokes “First Impressions of Earth” (A British magazine not mentioning The Strokes? Seems like they’re usually the ones who get it right). The November, 2003 issue was awesome! I want another cover!

the bizzle | 11/8/2006, 8:06 pm EST

The idea of debating the best album of the year is a bit polarizing. So many have not been heard by most. That said, lesser known releases have certainly started to take on their own life in terms of public opinion (and I love it). I prefer the new Bob Dylan (or any Bob Dylan) over MOST of the releases this year or any other. Loving music is personal, so are opinions.

Delta | 11/8/2006, 8:09 pm EST

Just where the hell is Burst – Origo? Easily one of the best releases of the year.

heavyhitter | 11/8/2006, 8:22 pm EST

Chinese Democracy!!!!!!!!!!!!

Warzawa | 11/8/2006, 8:35 pm EST

I agree with whoever said that lists like this are irrelevant now because music is so diverse and specialized. There aren’t very many people who have listened to most of the records on any list.

And I’m a fucking hipster! But a financially poor one…so even I can’t even keep up anymore. With that said, here’s my picks for the top 10 this year…(that’s without hearing Tom Waits new album yet)

10. Living with War – Neil Young
9. Revelations – Audioslave
8. Impeach My Bush – Peaches
7. Modern Times – Bob Dylan
6. The Greatest – Cat Power
5. Beck – The Information
4. I’m Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass – Yo La Tengo
3. Return to Cookie Mountain – TV on the Radio
2. Pearl Jam – Pearl Jam
1. The Eraser – Thom Yorke

Come to think of it…I’m just as crazy as Uncut if not worse.

bjmcdani | 11/8/2006, 8:36 pm EST

The Knife: Silent Shout
Lambchop:Damaged
The Hold Steady: Boys and Girls in America
Mission of Burma: The Obliterati
TV on The Radio: Return to Cookie Mountain
Yo La Tengo: I’m Not Afraid of You
Twilight Singers: Powder Burns
Camera Obscura: Lets Get Out of this Country
Califone: Roots and Crowns
Band of Horses: Everything All The Time

idioteque | 11/8/2006, 8:37 pm EST

So far, here’s how it’s looking for me:

1. The Decemberists – The Crane Wife
2. TV on the Radio – Return to Cookie Mountain
3. Bob Dylan – Modern Times
4. Thom Yorke – The Eraser
5. The Mars Volta – Amputechture
6. Gnarls Barkley – St. Elsewhere
7. Beck – The Information
8. Tom Waits – Orphans
9. The Raconteurs – Broken Boy Soldiers
10. Lupe Fiasco – Food and Liqour

Chinese Democracy should be on here too if that actually comes out this year, because all of the leaks/demos/live shit I’ve heard has been amazing.

But you know Rolling Stone will put Dylan’s album at #1 just because he’s Bob Dylan.

Blueprint413 | 11/8/2006, 9:11 pm EST

Why doesn’t RS come out with a list like this? You guys seem to have an idea of what you’re doing . . .

Noted omissions that really needed to be on that damn list/albums that should’ve been higher:
Strokes-First Impressions (Best from them ever, no question, which is saying a lot)
Lupe Fiasco- Food and Liquor (Idlewild AND Ghostface couldn’t hold a candle to that guy, and its his FIRST ALBUM)
Beck-Information
Flamin g Lips-Mistics
RHCP-Stadium Arcadium
Pearl Jam-Pearl Jam
THE HOLD STEADY- (Obviously noted)
Wolfmother-They get no love b/c they’re not huge like these other bangs. . . not yet

I don’t understand why everyone LOVES Dylan. He’s quality but I dono, maybe I haven’t given him a chance. All I know is that The Strokes would be a revolutionary force not to be f**ked with if they had Dylan’s inter-generational “appeal.”

BTW, whoever put Panic! and AFI up there. . . go cry and masturbate at the same time. Those albums got older than Bob Dylan is by the 4th listen through.

Unstrung | 11/8/2006, 9:12 pm EST

What’s somewhat interesting is how Rolling Stone is apt to criticize a list when they have been seemingly oblivious to some of the fine albums that Uncut has put in the top 50. How has Rolling Stone completely missed Midlake, Comets on Fire, Grandaddy, Chris Walker, etc?

Unstrung | 11/8/2006, 9:15 pm EST

Scratch that – RS does follow Grandaddy, but still not enough of these bands.

Aaron D. | 11/8/2006, 9:31 pm EST

I must be the only one who thinks the Strokes are overrated, redundant, and just plain boring.

The Arctic Monkeys at #6? I like them, but they are not the rock epiphany that so many claim them to be. In fact, they sound too close to the Hives for comfort.

Chris | 11/8/2006, 9:45 pm EST

It’s a good thing the UK’s put out some of the best music I’ve ever heard…too bad the press over there amounts to a pile of crap.

Best Records Of The Year
1) Muse-Black Holes and Revelations
2) MuteMath-MuteMath
3) Deftones-Saturday Night Wrist
4) The Decemberists-The Crane Wife
5) The Roots-Game Theory
6) Beck-The Information
7) Outkast-Idlewild
8) Tool-10,000 Days
9) Kevin Federline. Now wouldn’t that’d be something if he showed up on somebody’s list.

Haha…but besides our favorite “crackhead turned rapper”, that’s where I stand

Babyshambles cd due out in december i believe. could be best of the year. and also i think the hives are too. Arctic monkeys are like the libertines pretty much

The Ox | 11/8/2006, 10:26 pm EST

Man, I hate to go with a fairly popular/well-recognized band here, but these guys put out a really quality record. Well-produced, and exciting sound:

The Decemberists – ‘The Crane Wife’

Also, I’ve got a soft-spot for the old guys, so I’m going to rank this one up there. I genuinely believe this is a quality record anyway.

The Who – ‘Endless Wire’

Also, how could you forget the greatest living singer/songwriter’s latest release?

Neil Young – ‘Living With War’

If you’re including EPs…

Sigur Ros – ‘Saeglopur – EP’

Had some great minimalistic tracks on there.

Anywho, that’s enough babbling for me. I’m waiting for the Shins, Polyphonic Spree, and Marillion in ‘07! Can’t wait.

matt | 11/8/2006, 10:37 pm EST

Sleeper hit of the year:

Ray LaMontagne – Till The Sun Turns Black

rwdelos | 11/8/2006, 10:41 pm EST

sigur ros – ’saeglopur ep’
johann johannsson – ‘ibm 1401 – a users manual’
tool – ‘10,000 days’
pearl jam – ‘pearl jam’

these albums not being on that list makes it the worst list yet.

Paddy J | 11/8/2006, 11:06 pm EST

This list fails. I am glad that Mastodon’s Blood Mountain made the list, because it is definitely an awesome CD and it’s nice to see metal be at least acknowledged. But, Pearl Jam, Stadium Arcadium, and 10000 Days aren’t on the list, and I think that back in the metal section, Slayer’s Christ Illusion, Lamb of God’s Sacrament, Iron Maiden’s A Matter of Life and Death and maybe even Motorhead’s Kiss of Death were all great as well. Too bad that metal gets largely ignored in music magazines, despite the huge amount of fans if garners worldwide.

EJ LE DJ | 11/9/2006, 12:03 am EST

Where the heck is Islands-Return To The Sea. That record is superior to anything on that joke of a list. Kick Out The Jams!

Ken Vail Jr. | 11/9/2006, 12:07 am EST

‘STREETS OF NEW YORK’ by WILLIE NILE is the best lp of the year…if you like rootsy singer/songwriters in the vein of Springsteen or Dylan, you’ll love this lp. It is a masterpiece.

Brian | 11/9/2006, 12:10 am EST

These albums should be considered for Album of the Year grammy:

Modern Times- Bob Dylan: it’s an acquired taste but once it grows on you, you’re hooked.

St. Elsewhere- Gnarles Barkley: a real fun album and unlike anything else I heard this year.

Duets- Tony Bennett: this could be this years Genius Loves Company, but it is a longshot since Tony’s still alive and well.

Stadium Arcadium: The Chillies: their most ambitious album yet and it has some very good songs and I don’t really call myself a RHCP fan.

Highway Companion- Tom Petty: 12 great songs. May not be nominated for Album of the Year but should at least be considered for rock album.

Back To Basics: Xtina: now we can put the Twitney comparisons to rest. Let’s hope they don’t nominate Justin Timberflake or Trouserlake someone else called him.

Ok that’s six but they’re all good. But the Dylan album in my mind has the best shot at the award.

2. The Hold Stead – Boys and Girls In America
3. TV On The Radio – Return To Cookie Mountain
4. Junior Boys – In The Morning
5. Akron/Family – Meek Warrior

Also – Stop jumping all over the new Dylan album just because he’s Dylan. It’s a great album, and I was there the first day to buy it, but its not the best of 06 – not by a long shot.

JT | 11/9/2006, 1:47 am EST

and since its 1:45am I’ve mis-spelled Joanna Newsom*’s name.

10 points to me.

I liked the dresden dolls album for best album, and I was never a fan. I just picked it up on impulse and I keep going back to it over and over. It’s damn good.

Bob Dylan is my #2.

And 3 is hard….Iron Maiden put out a fantastic album, but Thom Yorke did too. It’s really a tie, but I’ll say Maiden just because they exceeded all my expectations.

I’ll never forget that Mick Jagger Goddess in the Doorway review. I laughed my ass off about it then, and I still am. Almost as embarassing as that 5 star review David Fricke lent to the Beastie Boys for their worst album To the Five Boroughs

This just goes to show just how bloody conservative and hypocritical Rolling Stone is. Joanna Newsom may be an acquired taste, but her record is truly remarkable and unlike any other released this year. Also, I don’t get your comment about sandwiching Gnarls Barkley between Band of Horses and Muse (it’s called variety!). And no doubt Rolling Stone’s list will be the most boring of all the music press. Wake up, you’re not relevant anymore, and shoddy journalism like this won’t get you anywhere!

Dylan could fart on a snare drum for 45 minutes, release it, and RS would call it a 5 star classic.

It wasn’t the best album, but no album entertained me or made me laugh more than K-Feds. I don’t always need to be moved or enchanted by music. Sometimes, I want to just laugh hysterically. K-Fed gets the job done. Let’s send that moron platinum!

Paul Koffer | 11/9/2006, 6:24 am EST

My Favorite this year (so far), hands down, is – very surprisingly, since her previous albums had NOT been fully satisfying, in my opinion – Beth Orton’s “Comfort Of Strangers.”

GlimmerTwin | 11/9/2006, 6:47 am EST

This is coming from the magazine that’s so stuck in the ’60s and ’70s they considered Bruce Springsteen’s boring “Devils & Dust” to be the fifth best album of 2005? I believe that man to be a holy being sent from above as well, but sheesh – “Devils & Dust” at #5? (At least I think so – haven’t seen the list for a whole and I don’t have the energy to look it up, but the album is way up there.) This is a magazine that has rewarded everything the Rolling Stones have recorded since “Tattoo You” with good reviews.
Face it, this magazine ceased to be important around the time most of the ’60s icons it so deeply revers did. Just look at their list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Have you ever seen anything more pathetic, boring, uninventive and utterly mega-predictable? So for the love of God, stop commenting about other people’s lists.

How about RICHARD BUTLER’s solo disc and DIRTY PRETTY THING’s debut?

Ash | 11/9/2006, 8:44 am EST

P!ATD AND afi fucking suck.

Know it.

And can any of you compare Bob Dylan’s new album to anything he did in the 60s or 70s? What was he supposed to do? Rewrite Blonde On Blonde?

Jelena | 11/9/2006, 9:03 am EST

What’s the point of these rankings? They always miss some albums, people hate the ranking so they make one of their own, bla, bla, bla.

I don’t have a best album of the year, but definetly the most boring one “Home” by The Gathering.

Karma | 11/9/2006, 9:18 am EST

WHERE THE FUCK IS PEARL JAM!!! THIS RECORD WILL KNOCK YOU ON YOUR ASS RIGHT OUT OF THE GATE AND DOESN’T LET UP UNTIL ABOUT MIDWAY THROUGH!! ROLLING STONE IS A FUCKING JOKE!!

Stu | 11/9/2006, 9:24 am EST

Bob Dylan? The best album of the year? For that crap? We all know music trends are cyclical (hence the Killers being popular now when 10 years ago they would have been laughed out of an eighties convention for being too ‘eighties’) which is why people like Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen, not so long ago the butt of everyon’e musical jokes, can do now wrong and release the poorest and least un-thoughout albums but be worshipped…..
Compared to last year I think this year’s offerings have been comparitively modest but come on – ‘Modern Times’????!!!!! Are you having a laugh?

earthling | 11/9/2006, 9:26 am EST

Not sure about the Dylan album… Yeah, it’s good, but it doesn’t make my top ten. I agree with most of the other top albums on the lists here (TV on the Radio, Flaming Lips, RHCP, Beck, Strokes…) but you all forgot THE best album of 06 : The Dears – Gang of Losers. It’s grand, catchy, emotional, inspired… the perfect alt/rock album! Do yourself a favor and go buy it!
BTW, Scott P the last Stills is just awful. It is my worst album of the year! I’d rather listen to Nelly Furtado than that piece of crap! Too bad, their first album was simply amazing,,, they fucked up, big time!

The best album of the year, hands down, is “Playing With Fire” by Kevin Federline. Uncut showed quite a bit of foresight putting Tom Waits’ “Orphans” on the list. It’s not even out yet.

Bmac | 11/9/2006, 12:36 pm EST

Pearl Jam put out an album that has been neglected. Hopefully it gets some notice from the Grammy’s. People need to hear this album!

Jonny M | 11/9/2006, 12:59 pm EST

Although R.S. trashed it, Amos Lee – Supply & Demand makes my list!

Ernesto | 11/9/2006, 1:06 pm EST

“Taking the Long Way” by the Dixie Chicks and “Modern Times” by Bob Dylan are the best albums of the year.

wass | 11/9/2006, 2:12 pm EST

Gomez how we operate is the best album that i have heard this year. Guster’s Ganging Up on the Sun is second. Roger Joseph Manning Jr.’s self-titled is also amazing. LEO – alpacas Ogling is another awesome album. And the Indigo Girls released a great album as well.

Let’s stop naming the same albums and artists over and over. is the dylan album great enough that three years from now you would play it over blonde on blonde or blood on the tracks. i somehow doubt it – at least for most of us. this alone does not mean it is not the best album of the year but i have heard several people say that it is overrated.

wass | 11/9/2006, 2:14 pm EST

also alice smith’s for lovers dreamers and me is exceptional. the album is simply phenomenal.

ditka | 11/9/2006, 2:19 pm EST

Dylan’s “Modern Times” and The Decemberists “The Crane Wife”

Stadium Arcadium by RHCP sounds exactly like the last two albums they put out and how many songs can one band write about Cali? Come on

Joe R | 11/9/2006, 2:56 pm EST

WFT does no one realize how amazing ‘First Impressions of Earth’ by The Strokes and ‘Show Your Bones’ by YeahYeahYeahs are?

‘You In Reverse’-Built To Spill
‘The Life Pursuit’-B & S
‘Pearl Jam’-Pearl Jam
‘Broken Boy Soldier’-Raconteurs
‘Return To Cookie Mountain’-TV on the Radio

THOSE are the best albums of the year

conn | 11/9/2006, 3:01 pm EST

ok i do agree that modern times is definatley great, but we gotta give sum love to the new bnds n the scene saving rock. how about placing wolfmother’s self titled album, where the fuck is that!!!???that should be on there maybe more than some other albums, because thats the best album ive heard in some time. or maybe the sensational seattle band that took over earlier i hte year? do i hear pearl jam? ok the racoteurs proll did deserve 16, and they had some other good ideas, but the people who worte this are way fuckin wrong

PastyJournalist | 11/9/2006, 3:06 pm EST

1. “Fox Confessor Brings the Flood” – Neko Case (may not be the best album of the year, but the album I’ve listened to most)

To all of the nerds below:
Contrary to popular belief, listing “indie” acts does not make you cool. No one bought that crap because it sucked.

mike | 11/9/2006, 3:14 pm EST

dfa remix album #1

if its not technically an “album”, it sure is the best compilation of the year

just by your name, i can tell you are a very intelligent, well-informed person who deserves to be taken seriously.
i listen to music that just happens to be “indie” but i don’t think “it makes me cool.” i like it because, oh my god, i think it sounds good! can you believe it?
and i know, it’s really unfortunate that not a lot of the music i like sold a lot of records this year. because the only way i can really be feel comfortable with who i am is if everybody likes the same things as i do. because i am a automaton without a brain of my own.

Reality Check | 11/10/2006, 5:59 pm EST

There hasn’t been a truly GREAT record released this year. Not one people will be spinning in 5 years and talking about, at least. There are some catchy, or inventive albums out, but come on…we’re going through an era in rock n’ roll not unlike 1984-1988. It just sucks and everything feels like a product, not art. It always turns, but this isn’t the year. The band that will turn it probably isn’t even together yet. Best album of the year? How about ‘most decent’ or ‘most passable’ record of the year. Would that be more appropriate?

william | 11/12/2006, 1:23 pm EST

Celtic Frost made their comeback with an impressive album.

william | 11/12/2006, 1:29 pm EST

I would be highly suprised if Rolling Stone publishes an article about metal. It’s almost only articles about commercial rubbish.

cb | 11/16/2006, 3:37 pm EST

Tom Petty – Highway Companion
Bob Seger – Face The Promise
Bruce Springsteen – Seeger Sessions

Yeah I am old and grew up with these guys but each put out solid records this year!! Petty’s is Outstanding!!

Rick | 11/19/2006, 12:15 am EST

Stadium Arcadium- RHCP
Broken Boy Soldiers- Raconteurs
Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not- Arctic Monkeys
I Also Enjoyed Ben Harper’s Both Sides Of the Gun, and Although I am a big Dylan fan, “Modern Times” shouldn’t even be in the top ten. It is simply a collection of old sounding blues songs (and i do love the blues), some of which he didn’t even write (rollin’ and tumblin’) and on top of that, they are sung by a man with a dying voice. I know he still wants to write songs, and he is one of my top 5 most influential figures in rock and roll, but i need something a little more original.

Dylon | 11/27/2006, 12:34 pm EST

kfed kfed kfed kfed kfed because i spite hot fire

Boombox G | 12/1/2006, 5:43 pm EST

Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins -Rabbit Fur Coat just sounds classic to me.
TV on the Radio and Yo La Tengo and Built To Spill and Wolfmother and Hold Steady put out some good shite also. I gotta love Gnarls Barkley too. But for some reason my favorite album of 2004 -Arcade Fire’s Funeral is still the album of the year. I cant get over it. Its cracklike. Crackish. 2 years later. i need help.

Ellie | 12/3/2006, 7:58 am EST

What about The Thermals’ The body, the blood, the machine?

Kris Veets | 12/6/2006, 11:47 am EST

Top American Bands:

1. My Morning Jacket
2. The Walkmen
3. Spoon

Adrian Tuohy | 12/8/2006, 7:11 pm EST

1. The Lemonheads- The Lemonheads
2. Pearl Jam- Pearl Jam
3. Babyshambles- Down in Albion
4. The Strokes- First Impressions of Earth
5. Tom Petty- Highway Companion
6. Dirty Pretty Things- Waterloo to Anywhere

Everything else was too shitty to even put down. It’s a shame nobody recognizes Evan Dando. He was the best ten years ago and continues to be the best today. Pearl Jam had a great record and Babyshambles is a new hope. God bless Pete Doherty. By the way, I’m a big Dylan fan, but Bob hasn’t been able to sing for the past fifteen years. His songs were quite unremarkable as well.

miccc | 1/18/2007, 1:00 am EST

My top two albums of the year were: #1 RHCP Stadium Arcadium #2 Bob Dylan Modern Times
