Apparently there are flocks of Hollywood types just waiting to ruin their careers by playing Freddie Mercury. We’ve been here before: If actors could be rock stars they WOULD be. Anyway, according to (Queen guitarist) Brian May, “There is a film in the pipeline” and all three surviving members of the band are involved in the project. “I’m not allowed to say much about it and casting isn’t finalized but we’ve had some incredible offers to play Freddie. Really incredible,” May reportedly said. So let’s help them out: Is there anyone on earth capable of pulling off this role? We know Christopher Walken is already taken.

channeling freddie mercury? is that possible? i want to hear what borat would say. because when freddie had his stache he looked like BORAT
Toby | 11/8/2006, 5:47 pm EST
Rufus Sewell would be a good choice, while I was watching The Illusionist, I could stop thinking how much he resembled Freddie…..
Ellum N. Opie | 11/8/2006, 5:49 pm EST
How about Mark Ruffalo? Or Billy Crudup? Don’t know how well either sings, but they have similar body types.
patrick | 11/8/2006, 5:56 pm EST
Christian Bale could play the role, hell he can do anything!
Jamie Foxx seems to like music roles- give it to him-LOL
- but who could pull of his vocals in today’s music?? hmm not many!
- Maybe Chris Cornell(SOUNDGARDEN,AUDIOSLAVE ), Jimmy Gnecco (OURS), Jeff Tate (Queensryche), Not many could do it !! Heck get Brandon Flowers (the Killers) cause he already has the friggin STACHE- dont think he could hit the vocals though-LOL
Later kids!

Why not dig him up, and fasten strings to his skeleton, making him a puppet?

I am very much fan of the Freddie Mercury’s and Queens! Yes!
I would be loving to act the part of his life! This mean I have to be nude with mens? Is OK if I don’t have to use mouth. I would sing We will, we will Rock on! And also Bohemia Raps on me and Another Nun bite the rust! YES…I can do it!
He was the gay, but he was really rock on roll! Hsi teeth was bad too, but is OK, so is mines.

I can’t think of anyone who could pull this off. Would they have to sing or just act?
There was only one Freddie.
Andrea | 11/8/2006, 8:58 pm EST
I think that Brandon Flowers coulde do it. He has the stache and really reminds me of Freddie Mercury. I also think that he has the vox as well.
KillerQueen87 | 11/8/2006, 9:13 pm EST
Johnny Depp
check this out, looks a little like Freddie here:
http://movies.yahoo.com /movie/1804030882/photo/153442
Don’t know his singing ability, though we’ll find out in Sweeney Todd. They should just dub it with Freddie’s voice anyway or it wouldn’t sound right.
Topher | 11/8/2006, 9:40 pm EST
I think there’s a few actors that can pull off the look-alike and acting parts but no one can touch Mercury on vocals. My choices would be Johnny Depp or Jared Leto. Who knows, maybe Leto could pull off at least some of the vocal work.
Nick the Hawley | 11/8/2006, 10:50 pm EST
Samuel L. Jackson
Mandela | 11/8/2006, 11:02 pm EST
christian bale, someone said him earlier and he was the only one to stick out. he’s always willing to change his body for a role, he’s an increddible actor, and he can always go the jamie fox way with vocals. I mean really if we can let walken play ozzy despite of looks, i say let christian do it, he’ll acutally have fun in a role for once, and really is anyone mentioned so far able to pull off over the top fiminine swagger with a tough male edge and give us a great portrayal of the last years?
dr flanders | 11/8/2006, 11:40 pm EST
haha let tom sellick do it, hes got the mustache power!
drflanders | 11/8/2006, 11:41 pm EST
let Tom Sellick play him, he has the mustache power!

How about Nic Cage, with a bear and a wig….

I agree. Sam Jackson. Enough said
marnr67 | 11/9/2006, 1:41 am EST
Im going with Antonio Banderas for no logical reason nor attempt at spelling his name correctly
Caleb | 11/9/2006, 3:03 am EST
A lot of these suggestions are pretty disrespectful to Freddie, Dave Chappelle? thats dumb let’s get someone with acting talent and looks like freddie, maybe Johnny depp, I think Sacha Baron Cohen could do it if he could do a serious role. Christian Bale actually sounds pretty good. but I think Billy Crudup is the best so far.
Donald | 11/9/2006, 3:21 am EST
Freddie Prinze, Jr. but only if he could act like a man.
mike t | 11/9/2006, 7:52 am EST
Eminem!!
Thalia | 11/9/2006, 8:21 am EST
Nobody can play this role. we’re talking about FREDDIE MERCURY, come on…
Kliffee | 11/9/2006, 9:57 am EST
No NO NO! I hate when famous people play other famous people in movies. it never works!
We need an unknown.
Christopher Reeves was an unknow, he’s SUPERMAN. I don’t wanna see some r&b wannabe playing Ray Charles, etc.
zach | 11/9/2006, 10:04 am EST
to who ever suggested thom yorke, i would love to see him in a film but he could not do freddy. he just doesnt have the flambouyence (or however its spelled
CHOAD | 11/9/2006, 10:04 am EST
The Killers Brandon Flowers. He’s a real singer, and is also sporting a Freddyesqe porn stache right now.
Holla | 11/9/2006, 10:27 am EST
I think Tupac Shakur would be a most excellent choice.
Joe | 11/9/2006, 10:31 am EST
Chester Bennington of Linkin Park. He might be the only one out there who can actually channel Freddy’s vocals.
Gabi Hoopasteak | 11/9/2006, 10:32 am EST
I hear K-Fed/Fed-Ex is looking for work.
BIT | 11/9/2006, 10:38 am EST
Sasha Baron Cohen is your Freddie.
-_-? | 11/9/2006, 10:43 am EST
what the crap is with all these movies about rockstars???? why? blondie, freddie mercury, who else?? one reason actors arent rockstars is because their fake and borderline plastic ((most of them.)) no actor is going to capture the real person, no matter how much they pay them.
Daniel L. | 11/9/2006, 10:44 am EST
Vincent Chase is the only logical person for the role since he’s not playing Joey Ramone anymore.
The Him | 11/9/2006, 11:09 am EST
There’s not a human being capable of playing Fredddie.
matt | 11/9/2006, 11:10 am EST
someone below said jason lee. That could be interesting. As for flowers, the guy has no acting ability, and he is currently humping Mercury’s leg by sporting that ’stache
m@ | 11/9/2006, 11:16 am EST
ewan mcgregor has shown amazing versatility. don’t understimate that. but could he handle the vocals? dunno. moulin rouge was ok…but i don’t think he has the upper register for it. (then again, who does?!?!?)
m@ | 11/9/2006, 11:17 am EST
on second thought…if eddie izzard was slimmer and could sing…he’d be perfect!
SATAN | 11/9/2006, 11:17 am EST
HE’S HOT
Corleone | 11/9/2006, 11:23 am EST
I really don’t think that there is any actor that could pull it off. Freddie is too original, and to much of a character to be copied. But if I have to chose I would say Johnny Depp because I believe he’s the most versatile actor today.
The Him | 11/9/2006, 11:27 am EST
You’re absolutely right about Johnny Depp, but Freddie is another universe.
sore loser | 11/9/2006, 11:49 am EST
brandon flowers or jake shears
Jacob | 11/9/2006, 11:56 am EST
Bette Midler
The Him | 11/9/2006, 12:05 pm EST
m@, I’d love to see Ewan McGregor in the kind of versatility I’m thinking of…
Drunk and Obese | 11/9/2006, 12:31 pm EST
The singer dude from the Darkness. something-Hawkings. He’s got the vocals. Might have AIDS, too.
MegaSudz | 11/9/2006, 12:33 pm EST
Eddie Izzard or Tim Currey
Sebastian | 11/9/2006, 1:13 pm EST
Perhaps someone unknown would be the best choice…someone who can sing and act…
bastyanpatagonia@gma il.com
Stroke | 11/9/2006, 4:12 pm EST
Have George Lucas direct and use CGI. Like Jar Jar binks. Or have Sacha Baren Cohen. He already has the mustache with Borat.
Soulsinger88 | 11/9/2006, 4:33 pm EST
Come on y’all No One could even think about covering the vocal. You may get the range but never the tone.
Freddie Fan | 11/9/2006, 4:57 pm EST
the only man that can play the one and only freddie mercury is the one and only andy dick.
Big Snitch | 11/9/2006, 8:31 pm EST
My butthole looks like him after a friday night! Perhaps i should try out ?
cathy p. | 11/9/2006, 10:18 pm EST
Danny Bonaduce
J Ro | 11/10/2006, 8:00 am EST
Robbie Williams might be a good one, already has the accent as well as the flamboyance(spelling?)Doesnt quite have the vocal range but he would definitely be a front runner. Needs a tache though.
pk | 11/19/2006, 3:12 pm EST
Gerard Way
Wendy | 11/19/2006, 7:12 pm EST
David Bowie could do it if he was not so old, after all, he at least KNEW Freddie well and has the same sort of range and persona. NOT Brandon Flowers. Flowers would just end up starting fueds with Brian May. Um, Gerard Way? No, he’s having enough problems with people calling his band the new Queen already, when they make a movie about Bowie or make a remake off Labyrinth, then it’s his time. Johnny Depp? Perhaps. Cillian Murphy would be awesome. He’s very versatile and talented. He could do Freddie’s character justice. Courtney Love is good at playing an AIDS victim and is a singer, but she’s just not feminine or talented enough. And her penis is too big. And she’s a chick. Kinda. IF JARED LETO AUDITIONS I WILL SMIGHT HIM. But seriously, just punch Cillian in the balls enough times, and he’ll get the voice perfectly, he already has a kid anyway, so it would not be TOO much of a tragedy. Please no one suggest Brendon Urie or I may cry
Wendy | 11/19/2006, 7:32 pm EST
Oh, and let me clarify just in case my comment is misconstrued (sp?). I am NOT saying MCR is the new Queen. OTHERS said that in response either in a review or in response to Ultragrrrl’s claim MCR was the new Nirvana (wtf?). What I meant was that Gerard does not want too much of that said, he’d rather be the first My Chemical Romance. so playing Freddie Mercury in the movie would be a bit counterproductive. Um, other suggestions? Hugh Laurie or Jesse Spencer (would require ball-punching manuever as with Cillian for Bohemian Rhapsody vocals). Carson Kressly? Jake Gyllehaal(not a Brokeback joke, he’s a good actor!)? William Beckett would be awesome just to see, even though he probably could not do it.
DDiego | 11/23/2006, 11:21 am EST
BEN STILLER is quite a perfect copy for the acting. If is reserched a new frontman for the queen group, robbie willians is the only one with enough carisma and vocal to works well init
paul 27 years a fan. | 11/24/2006, 12:34 pm EST
Let Queen decide they were closer to him than any 1, and if they cannot find the right person, then dont go there ,money should not even be a factor,if a film was made it cannot be bad as freddie never gave us second rate or bad music.
Ray | 11/24/2006, 10:26 pm EST
Johnny Dept! My first choice– he is a wonderful actor and could capture Freddie’s personality and abilities amazingly!
Ray | 11/24/2006, 10:27 pm EST
Sorry– Depp…
Quack | 11/25/2006, 10:42 pm EST
Freddie Should Play Him – or me!!
But Seriously, I think Probably Johnny Depp.
Pearl | 11/28/2006, 5:55 pm EST
I think it’s just impossible to be Freddie Mercury… However, Depp is a good option… even though it would be hard to get Freddie’s essence. If there’s going to be a movie about him, it should not be about freddie being perfect but as what he really was, a musician, a man, a person, therefore, he was not perfect and the play should be as clear as possible, I mean…. the director of that movie must not tell lies about Freddie.. Obviously, the movie has to be objective, but not irrealistic…
Break Free | 11/30/2006, 12:06 am EST
I fear for the movie! How in the world are they going to find the looks, the voice, the personality, the flamboyance and the sheer energy of Freddie in one actor?
ron plank | 12/2/2006, 5:59 pm EST
hey heres an idea JIM CARREY he can be flamboyant im sure the voice is aproblem though but jim some how as he always does can pull it off
we love you freddie
kyle | 12/5/2006, 8:32 pm EST
i just dont know. To try to fill in the place of such a flamboyant person? It seems impossible to me. but i would really like to see this movie. I would also be VERY appaled if they use johhny dep to fill in as freddie mercury.
jaco | 12/11/2006, 4:24 am EST
Dave Letterman?
Freddiephile | 12/31/2006, 3:23 pm EST
I think Christian Bale could pull it off. Johnny Depp could probably pull it off (after all, NO ONE could pull off Freddie’s vocals…c’mon, the role will be lipsinking, so vocals aren’t an issue). BUT, if they wanted someone…hasn’t anyone seen We Will Rock You in London? The lead in that play looks a lot like Freddie, has great vocals and obviously can act. Just a thought.
Denise | 3/28/2007, 6:57 pm EST
I loved Mercury´s Rock, the best singer that i saw in my life; when he showed singing I can I go on, or The great pretender!
I loved forever!!!!

The Hoff!
nic | 3/4/2008, 12:26 am EST
Deffo Johnny or Sasha.
They resemble him slightly, but the hard part is becoming him. you can’t just “act” that part, you have to really see every side of that man who so captivated the world and you’d need to not merely step into his shoes, but dance with them on! I’d be truely awed if the part was played well, and to it’s finest capacity. Freddie wasn’t a rock star, he was a legend – a god amoung men, can any actor convey that any do him justice?
Katie | 3/29/2008, 6:31 pm EST
I think that the british actor rufus sewell could take the role of freddie he has an uncanny resemablance to freddie. Just watch the film the illusionist you will see what i mean
Keegan | 8/22/2008, 8:27 pm EST
Ewan Mcgregor. He’s a talented actor, he’d look cool with a ’stache, and he can sing (not as well, but the best out of other actors for the part)
Johnny Depp just seems wrong. He looks close enough like him, can obviously act, can sing (a completely different style), but he doesn’t seem like Freddie. Not really something I put put my finger on..
Slogger | 9/16/2008, 10:26 am EST
I think they should go with cgi. It makes better sense to me. I like Freddie Mercury, and have a lot of his and queen memorabilia. So I say let’s CGI him, and then worry about his vocals.
Spartanking82 | 9/24/2008, 2:29 am EST
You know. I really don’t know who could play Freddie Mercury. He was one of a kind. But what I’m disturbed over is some of the names I keep seeing. Jesus, Toby Keith?! Mark Wahlberg?! Henry Rollins?! Come on, if Queen keeps getting responses like this, they might not even do it. Freddie Mercury was a icon, and ever since his death people just thought they could automatically talk shit about him and belittle him. Enough is enough.
dave | 11/9/2008, 1:10 am EST
Has anyone seen Gary Mullen and the works, this guy looks and sounds just like freedie, if you havent seen this guy proform check it out on you tube, I saw him live and he was right on the money, the walk, talk and of course the voice.
omg | 12/15/2008, 8:38 am EST

that will never work.
