Does Metallica Suck?

11/6/06, 4:15 pm EST

If you’re the kind of dude who’s going to write in to the Orlando Weekly about why you feel betrayed by Metallica, perhaps you have deeper problems than your fave band going corporate. That said, this project is fucking awesome.

A writer, angered by what he sees as Metallica’s corruption at the hands of “greed and mediocrity,” solicited opinion from his readers re: whether or not Metallica continues to rock, only rocked in the past, or has never, in fact, rocked at all. The responses were awesome. Here are snippets from the top-two. Do you agree or disagree with these opinions? Disagree? Discuss.

  • “I wholeheartedly carry the conviction that Metallica was once one of the most influential rock bands of all time, but I can’t deny their current position of suckhood. Why does Metallica suck? Eleven simple words: “Swizz Beatz featuring Ja Rule and Metallica, ‘We Did It Again.’”
  • “… The real reason Metallica sucks is that they have grown tired of metal and hungry for money. Sure, they used to rock the fucking balls off your parents’ house when you played them in ‘86, but the double-bass drums sound softer when they’re filled with cash. When Metallica sues their fans for listening to Metallica songs, THEY SUCK! I can picture Lars and his lawyers rolling nude in piles of money, laughing at the dickholes that are still willing to pay top dollar for their symphony-remixes of the same old shit. At some point one of them must’ve stopped dry-humping stacks of hundreds, wiped their diarrhea mustache and agreed to allow “Unforgiven” to be interpreted into elevator Muzak. I know this because I heard the shit while three old folks tapped their brittle feet to the mellow beat as I wondered if hell was a hospital elevator.”

FourNine | 5/25/2009, 3:30 am EST

I swear 90% of the people here are just jumping on the fuck metallica bandwagon just because Lars got mad at a technology he didnt understand. And are people seriously bashing hetfield for taking singing lessons? This isnt the 80’s, and yes, the music was great back then, but that was two decades ago. if they remained the exact same you would bitch that they were going stale.
I like motorhead too, but i still think the enter sandman cover being named “fuck metallica” was a little childish.

and not liking slayer doesnt immediately invalidate someones opinion, a band isnt good because they yell into the mic about a nazi scientist torturing jews. take your vocals that sound like bison being deep-fried and tell yourselves your “real metal fans”

Jeh | 5/25/2009, 12:01 am EST

Metallica sucks big time. The old shit ain’t good anymore and “new” music is just plain, boring liveless shit.
Lars Ulrich is not a good drummer at all and is way overrated.
James Hetfield hasn’t got the wibes it use to have in his singing.
Let’s move on from Metallica to something else.

I agree with Sad Butt True. Pretty much all of the other posts I’ve read are done by complete idiots. Especially you people who type in all caps.

Metal up your ass!

Falcon | 3/28/2009, 1:19 am EST

It has nothing to do with the instrumental portion of the band, it is all about the vocals. Hetfield has lost it. He can no longer sing or jam. Get a new singer and I guarantee they would be on top again.

Fable | 3/23/2009, 11:48 am EST

I wonder how people expect Metallica to stay where they were in the 80’s with all the money and fame they gathered.

The flame has gone out. It’s that simple and no one should get mad about it. The old metallica is dead and has been so for the better part of 2 decades. Get over it.

Now, the real fools are the ones who still shed the $$ to go to their concerts or buy their junk. The band realizes their peak days are long gone so they hired corporate America to cash in.

We are all greedy, but Metallica seems to have sold some thing big for the extra cash they got.

To all the angry folks I say: “Move on!”

Motorbreath was their apex. It was down hill from there.

372466 | 2/24/2009, 8:21 pm EST

Motörhead is one of Metallica’s major influences but Motörhead still owns up to this day. People are saying that Metallica are in their 40’s and and no longer in their 20’s so they can’t play good music, Lemmy is in his 60’s and still kicks ass. I believe the Metallica boys just got fat and lazy.

metfan1 | 2/9/2009, 3:45 am EST

mr. kroli | 1/13/2009, 1:04 pm EST

dumb ass(es). every band changes. its their band not yours. if you feel so butt hurt GO START YOUR OWN BAND!!! in the mean time. sit back and watch MetallicA continue to TOUR THE WORLD. Sold out? hell ya they sell out concerts all the time. if/when my band is noticed hell ya imma sell out! whats more metal than doing what ever the hell you want and still getting $$$$ off it? dethklok? we all watch it and 90% of the episodes arent doing a new album and its awesome. MetallicA has total creative power they could write a blue grass song and it still could be awesome unlike everyother band playing the same shit over and over. might as well take 3 riffs then play it faster and louder and every year release a “new” album.

…oh and the napster thing. READ THE NEWS! MetallicA was the only band with the balls to do that. HUNDREDS of YOUR favorite bands wanted it but they’re pussies and well when youre that awesome you can get away with sueing a 12 year old. fuck i had a law suit over a t shirt. Metal

Anonymous | 1/7/2009, 9:42 pm EST

What all of you dick holes don’t realize is that metallica has matured since kill em all and in 20 years or so all the good metal bands of this gen will sell out as well

the new metallica fans | 10/25/2008, 9:53 pm EST

Before the Black album came out:all of the fans headbanged and chugged beer down.
After the Black albun came out:all of the fans snapped their fingers and drank soda pop.
It felt soooo good to drive my front tires over the Black album cassette after waiting three years for it to come out and it sounded like Pop music.

Sad Butt True | 10/11/2008, 3:11 am EST

What the hell are you talking about Jenna? Metallica was playing rather big gigs and they were very popular with no air play. They were the ultimate rebels in a world that required radio and mtv play for a bands success. They were the ones that said that they hated top 40 and would never sell out. They were the poster children for what an underground band could do. And Justice For All was the cross roads for them. They could of continued to put out great underground speed metal, the kind that rebellious teens were proud to rub their parents face in, but instead they went down the road paved of faggy, palletable music your parents would have no problem letting you listen to. They could have been a kind of Grateful Dead of our generation, made tons of money and kept their dignity. The black album would have been a great album for some other band but it is a piece of shit for Metallica. Then the following albums were even worse. Too bad for them their success now relies on how many radio stations play their music so the new-fad-every-minute croud will not forget to buy their album and see their concerts. I noticed that the stations aren’t really playing the new stuff as much as the old. Looks like concert sales will be down this tour:-(

jenna | 10/4/2008, 1:29 pm EST

fair play metallica rule yeah they were a grinding band when they just used to play gigs every now and again but you cant do that forever and i respect them for doin it anyone of you jealous WANNABES would do the same they have more money than any of you will ever have so stop crying you pussies and get a job METALLICA RULE…….. DEAL WITH IT..

bubbakind | 9/16/2008, 4:44 pm EST

METALLICA DOES SUCK! Nightwish, Sonata Arctica, Kamelot, Now their are the new leaders in Metal. Finnish Metal Rules!

isses | 9/14/2008, 1:51 pm EST

I’m still fired up about the napster thing, and the 15 year old girl that was sued, while I had never used the napster service at any time,I thought it was a bit to far.I believe that the copyright laws violate the U.S Constitution,as it’s wrongfully interpreted.Lars is a loud mouth which could probably use a big swift kick up his arse to kickstart that brain of his.Now on with Metallicas musical transistions,I don’t have a problem with any artist doing what they want,as an artist myself I write what I feel, and that’s what is needed, and if the fan base changes because they lack broadness then that’s their choice.
If it required me to become and stay angry in order to produce a metal album that previous dedicated fans always demand then I’d choose to expand that horizon musically based on the moments in time of how I feel, those creative sparks can be inspiring and tell a story in the view of the artist, and it can also be interpreted in the way others listen to it,which may be much different.
Can Metallica save themselves from the bad pr from a decade ago?that question remains to be answered, and if the fans are unforgiving and move on,then maybe just maybe they can still attract to a much younger group.Lars need to start listening more to people, rather than corporate junkies whoms interests are disguised under right protections, but those junkies can simply move on to the next best band that they choose to seduce.

Sad Butt True | 9/12/2008, 4:27 am EST

I like the rest on this blog used to be a huge Metallica fan. I consider there being 2 Metallicas. Metallica BBA (Before the Black Album)And ABA (After the Black Album)They dissapoint me so much. I sit back and put on some “Lightning” and just wonder what went so terribly wrong. The only conclusion I can come to is that the only person with talent in the band was crushed by a bus. The music is entirely different, the lyrics are not deep and angry, shit my mom could listen to the new Metallica. But on the eve of the new album coming out I can say I have heard 4 tracks and all of them are pretty good. Not great, but not a steaming pile of dog shit like the last 18+ years. Maybe they now have made enough money because you know “Nothing Else Matters”

Opeth | 9/11/2008, 5:17 pm EST

No, I’m not really affiliated with Opeth. Metallica sucks. Lars has a lot of nerve. He is such a Ringo. He demands his tired, been done before drum catches to be ahead of everything in the mix. And St. Anger? What was he playing on, a garbage can? Lars, I’ll go head to head in a drum off with you any day, and I’m a guitarist. You’re the greediest bastard of the whole group, and the least talented. Metallica has been dead for several several years. Metallica sued Collective Soul for a similar riff. When a band sues Collective Soul…you know something is wrong. Hang it up, boys. Lars, you really chop my balls.

Paul | 9/7/2008, 10:56 am EST

i was into metallica back in ‘86. my first album was master of puppets. back then, they had zero air play and zero videos. They were at the time, like what Grunge was to the ’90s, fresh, something to break up the power-ballad, hair metal bands. what has happened to them? James, you can’t seem to sing anymore. always off-tune. back when you were yelling the words, it was always top-notch. the song structure is all over the place. it sounds like you guys took about 15 riffs and try to make them into one song…it almost makes the songs confusing. please oh please, before you guys pack it in…stop giving a toss about the money, just give us just one more album of songs the way you used to make them.

DOZER | 9/7/2008, 8:54 am EST

one reason metallica will NEVER BE THE SAME is cause some music coach “taught” james to sing for the black album. he fixed something that wasnt broke. and now we will always suffer for it. FUCK YOU METALLICA who could sue the pants off napster years ago and now offers free downloads to promote! i would love to beat the fuck out of anyone of you bitches.

Old School 'tallica fan | 8/29/2008, 11:26 pm EST

Furthermore… Perhaps they could just go back to ripping off Diamond Head. If any of you have not heard of Diamond Head…. Go You-Tube them… they are without a doubt the founders of the sound we all knew and loved that Metallica brought to North America.

Old School 'tallica fan | 8/29/2008, 10:47 pm EST

Metallica sucked when they went for the money grab radio-play sellout with bob rock and paid the price by losing their soul and their sanity. I just heard some tracks from their new death magnetic cd, and it sounds like rubin kicked them in the ass, hid lars stupid snare drum occasionally, and persuaded kirk to play guitar again. You can almost hear some of the pre-black album magic trying to form into a decent tune, but instead it fades into a random jam with no story to it, instead of the epic flowing storytelling defiant masterpieces metallica graced us with in the 80s. James, you really need to stop trying to sing and go back to your yelling because frankly, you now suck and ruin every song on the new album once you open your mouth… stick to the guitar and hire a young singer who still has some angst.

Fuck you fags | 8/23/2008, 2:13 am EST

Metallica sucks. They sold out and are greedy mother fuckers. I like bands because the way they sounds. When you change that sound, expect people (aka you’re old fans) to get pissed. People like your music because the way it sounds. Therefore when it changes drastically, people who listened to the old music get pissed.

Fuck you fag sissies who like Metallica now, you’re just supporting big corporate business.

MetalMike | 7/13/2008, 2:57 am EST

In the liner notes for the 2 Cd NWOBHM, lard :) I mean Lars talks about how him and James would tape (steal) songs of the great british metal bands of the day. Fast forward a decade and Lars and the corporation known as Metallica inc sued their fans for stealing from them. I wonder if Lard and Jane sent a check to Tygers of Pan Tang for the music they stole from them?

nmetallica4all | 7/2/2008, 1:34 pm EST

ha! Imagine doing the same thing for 30 or so years. The crap makes the good stuff great. They have seen the error of their ways from 94 to 08 and are trying to make a mark before being left with nothing more than the band that was awesome up until the justice album or black album. Hopefully hammet will start playing the fade to black solo the way he did on the album soon also.

FiZzI | 6/9/2008, 9:18 am EST

Metallica is the best..i dont care what others say but for me i love Metallica and their music

NUGE | 6/6/2008, 1:20 am EST

I guess what it comes down to is…most Metallica fans on here became disenchanted at some point. Seems most of it happened after AJFO. It was that way for me. I bought the “Black Album” and sold it the next day. This has never happened to me with any other artist. I’m not a giant metal fan like I used to be, but I’m a huge fan of SRV, Floyd, Zep, and Halen (even Sammy doesn’t make me puke like Metallica does now). None of my favourite bands have ever taken a turn like Metallica did. “Sell out? Yeah we sell out every night!” just doesn’t make me feel any better. Cause…you DON’T sell out every night anymore. The last show where I live had 3,500 in attendance. Not exactly a stadium tour. I wasn’t there, but from what I was told, lots of girls were flicking lighters during a lot of songs. I’m sorry…they might have made TONNES of money but they lost way more respect.

Bruce Dickinson | 5/26/2008, 8:14 pm EST

The Black Album was just has heavy as any of their earlier stuff, it was just a hell lot slower.

Load and Reload were softer, it was like Hard Rock. If Black Sabbath started off as a blues band, don’t see the problem in Load and Reload.

St. Anger - sure everyone has their bad albums, that was just one.

They didn’t follow any trends when they released those albums, those albums just got popular. They god older and got sick of thrash so they looked forward to other styles. Haven’t seen much progression in Slayer’s sound Reign In Blood - Christ Illusion

Beholder | 5/9/2008, 2:42 pm EST

Why do people always say they like music that is popular at the time, but then abandon these great musicians? That’s called hypocrisy. And those people are just afraid of having opinions. This forum is full of people claiming they once were die hard Metallica fans, but now hate them and their music. These people are the real mainstream, popularists and hypocrites (and I also believe they are 15yo-teenagers XD)

Dkirk | 5/3/2008, 4:35 am EST

My top ten favorite bands are Metallica,Led Zeppelin,AC/DC, Godsmack,Black Sabbath/Ozzy Osbourne,Nirvana,Lynyrd Skynyrd, Aerosmith,Pantera, and Seether. The genre from these band are thrash metal, speed metal, groove metal hard rock, heavy metal, folk rock, blues Rock, grunge, post grunge, alternative rock, alternative metal, and southern rock to me it just rock n’ roll. As for Metallica they’re my favorite band of all time.I know that Kill ‘Em All, Ride The Lightning, Master Of Puppets, and …And Justice For All. Are the “thrash metal/heavy metal/speed metal” albums. I would have to say that they are my favorite albums out of all the Metallica albums. But I also like the “Black album”, Load,Reload, S&M and even St. Anger. The “Black album” through Reload are considered hard rock/ alternative rock albums. The S&M album is all the genre I said and including symphony genre.(Which sounds really good mixed in)(The Garage Inc. album of cover songs is bad ass.) Well as for St. Anger I don’t hate it. It is not my favorite album but I can still put in my cd player and crank up the volume and jam out to it like all the other albums. St. Anger would really be good if they changed the snare drum sound and if they added some solo’s to the songs it would be really fucking good. So for me St. Anger would be great if they changed these thing and some of the lyrics. Like on “Dirty Window” the Projector,Protector, Rejecter, Infector, and Defector. I don’t know why he put these words in their I had to look them up the dictionary to find out what they mean. Then I understood why they put them in their. But still I think they should of took them out. And for the song “All Within My Hands” at the end song they of just ended it with kill em all instead of saying kill 40 times! As for the “Napster Controversy” I would be pissed to. What would you rather get $1 Million dollars or $5 Million dollars? They spent time and money on recording their songs hell they spent over 1 million dollars making “Black album”. Shouldn’t they get played for it. Metallica will always be my favorite band. As for the new album they have coming out in September I have heard of one of the new songs (Death is not thee end) it fucking rocks. So this album should put METAL UP YOUR ASS!!

loenal | 4/30/2008, 2:20 pm EST

Bob Rock i wish i had twenty minutes alone with you to kick your azz.

Cronos | 4/22/2008, 3:04 pm EST

Why are there articles about metallica all the time on rollingstone mag and website? Where’s the coverage of venom, Exodus, Kreator, Slayer, or Megadeth….

Metallica used to be great. Now a bunch of kids who claim to be ‘metal’ enjoy them, but cant stomach Slayer or Venom because its too ’satanic’. Now THAT is the definition of poser.

Give up on Metallica. Go listen to the new Testament or the Hellhammer re-issues. I bet there wont be reviews of these on rollingstone, and if they are reviewed, they’ll get 1 star each, while st anger sits with its 4 star crown.

the one on the left | 4/19/2008, 5:24 pm EST

hey metallica fans,
if metallica is so amazing, why do you guys so fiercly defend them? cant they defend themselves? doesnt their music speak for itself?
no. it doesnt.
their music doesnt speak for shit
they dont speak for shit
metallica sucks. to be specific the singing sucks. really sucks
the singer is so full of himself its like having my earholes raped by a guy wearing a sandpaper condom…

Kieran | 4/19/2008, 5:11 am EST

Metallica have been getting the sell out thing since 84 when when they released Fade to black and 88 when they made a video for ONE…people who call Metallica sell outs post black album are just trying to be cool and dont want to admit to liking popular music…stay inside that narrow mind with your “real metal” bands like Slayer and Testament

Anonymous | 4/17/2008, 9:10 pm EST

Metallica pre black album= greatest band ever

Metallica post black album= SELL OUT GREEDY

David Gilmour Fan | 4/16/2008, 10:51 pm EST

Most of you people ranting and raving on here act like a bunch of angst-ridden adolescents. There is a severe case of asstitis on here.

Cry me a river.

Loads not metal? Maybe, but it certainly aint mainstream either. Some of Metallica’s best song writing is on those albums. Download the lyrics you lazy pricks and tell me otherwise.

I honestly don’t see how mixing genres can be seen as the cliché act of “selling out”. Last I checked Country, Blues and metal weren’t hot stuff on the charts, much less an infusion of the three.

AFJA a masterpiece? Shit production? Repetitive song structures? Oh, I enjoy the album but I’ve heard better.

“$elling” out huh? What about Slayer? Oh they just popped in a few new ideas that stemmed from the Nu metal craze of the late nineties (ala hip hop grooves - the album DM). Nooooooo…..

Oh, I could name a number of “metal” bands who have evolved there sounds, incorporated musical elements from other genres e.g. LOG, Anthrax, Megadeth, Mastodon, Opeth, KSE, Machine Head, Shadows Fall, Arch Enemy, Pantera, Sepultura………

Do we want our music to

Radical changes in a bands approach should be encouraged, keeps the music fresh.

Don’t presume to tell me I am one sided as I listen to a very diverse variety of music with Metal just the tip of the iceberg. It’s perfectly OK to dislike Metallica. DO NOT presume to lecture others on their own tastes in music. I could go on and pick apart most, if not all of the pathetic and childish comments here but I refuse to waste any more time. Rolling Bone, you are pathetic! And the same can be said for most of imbecile pos(t)ers.

The internet has opened an avenue for the dull witted, ill-educated and advised public who too quickly jump on the back of nearest bandwagon in order to vomit forth their pseudo intellectual filth. It is clear to me that the majority of you foolish gits do not have enough brain matter to fill an eggcup.

Oh, I hear the kindergarten bells a ‘ringin (bells ed).

Henry | 4/16/2008, 9:23 pm EST

Metallica has gone the way of the dinosaur. All we have is a mere fossil make up with a bunch of plaster porous filling in all the missing bones.

What we are seeing and hearing today, is NOT Metallica. Metallica today are pussified beyond belief, they are whiney little turds who can’t write worth a bean anymore.

All they can do now is go out and buy a Ferrari or a painting by Van Gogh. They are what they once despised. Institutionalized corporate fuckwads who care more about image, and money.

Nothing wrong with money in and of itself. Music is their livelihood afterall, but to sacrifice your integrity and pussy-down your music just to appeal to a broader base, wreaks of zero class.

They are no longer musicians. They are little glam bitches. Every last one of them.

carrie.vorhees | 4/16/2008, 2:18 pm EST

When I was in the Metallica fan club the members of the staff manipulated me and encouraged me to share my merchandising ideas with them only to find them get used and me given no credit whatsoever…not even a pass or a ticket to a show.

Metallica made has made MORE money off the backs of their fans than actually attempting to creating something listenable in the last minimum 10 years.

The truth is that Metallica is a corporation…not a rock band…any spirit of musical influence is gone and now its just about how they are going to be able to maintain their greedy rock star lifestyles after Het’s back gives out and Kirks carpal tunnel gets to be too much, thereby leaving them unable to participate in live performance anymore.

GOOD RIDDANCE.

MixtallicA | 4/15/2008, 8:17 pm EST

The world needs a Metallicure, MetallicA is the big band ever, and who are you F..n emos?

Jajaja YEAH!!!!

Skirnir | 3/21/2008, 6:40 pm EST

Around 1990, the old Metallica was abducted and replaced by pussified clones. Enough said.

Shane | 3/18/2008, 1:09 am EST

i think Metallica get way to much credit. People are like “METALLICA! METALLICA! METALLICA!”.

I think that we should be focusing on how much Venom was such an important band to us.

HAIL THE HORDES!

FUCK YOU | 3/8/2008, 10:59 am EST

METALLICA SUCKS.
Forget the napster thing. Even without it, they still suck!
Im not “EMO” (not all “EMO’S” slit their wrists by the way. Stereotypical MUCH??) , and Im not a “poser”. I am just me, lol. I never really listened to metallica, and I have a guy friend who gets all wet for them, so I wanted to see what was SOOOO great about this band.

Well, I found out… NOTHING is great. The singer’s voice makes me want to kill myself. It’s also like they try to fucking hard.. I thought it was just me, so I asked my mom and my dad and my sister.. Guess what?? They all think Metallica sucks to! haha, so I know it’s not just me. I have been around music my whole life, Not that it’s important but just in case some idiot goes’ “uhh what do YOU know about music, der der” But I have never heard anything so sucky and annoying besides the teenie bopper “bands” Anyhoo, bye guys!

Justin | 1/27/2008, 1:24 pm EST

its plain and simple… i dont care what Metallica wants to put on their new album becauses i wont be buying it anyways… but log onto youtube and watch any recent performance of metallica or better yet go and see them live… you’ll wish u had never wasted ur time.. im not gonna sit here and bash the decisions that their making about money or anything because to be quite honest how many of us wouldnt change for as much money as they have had thrown in their face… the one thing that the money shouldnt change though is ur talent level..and its very easy to see that metallica does not have it anymore…period!

Thrasher | 1/11/2008, 3:57 pm EST

Metallica WAS one of the greatest bands of all time, but after The Black Album, they completely lost their spirit. The only albums that where good where, Kill ‘Em All, Ride The Lightning, Master Of Puppets, …And Justice For All, and The Black Album. I love Fade To Black. Now Metallic SUCKS!!!!

The band USED TO be one of the best metal bands ever, but then they got a stupid producer that would ruin their career.

blade x | 12/25/2007, 4:58 am EST

they sucked a little but we’ll wait the new album and then we’ll see who sucks

Brapppp | 11/11/2007, 11:12 pm EST

Their new stuff is crap. They’ve lost the youthful energy they had in the 80’s and now they are old farts, just like the rest of the old farts. They need to take their geritol and retire. If any of them were real artists, musicians in this case, they would realize that they are ruining the work that they did. If they love the money more, then they should start managing other bands and carpetbag them the same way BOB has done them. That would be better than ruining good memories of blasting their pre-bob albums at keg-parties. I can’t stand to listen to any of their yuppified new S%^T or pre-bob anymore. It’s ruined damn it.

the black album transformed | 10/14/2007, 3:29 pm EST

them into money hungry whores. The video for One gave them the taste of success and they loved the money. Since then, they are focused on money. Good music is not on their list of priorities anymore. Why play fast and precise music and why force their brains to make good music when whatever shit they release will make them money automatically by selling shit to retarded fans?

KIRK HAMMETT IS MEDIOCRE | 10/14/2007, 3:25 pm EST

He’s never been a great guitar player. In the 80’s he was a good fast pentatonic player, but in the latest videos he plays sloppy. In the symphonic video he plays out of tune (he plays a solo in the wrong pentatonic box). That only tells me that he doesn’t practice anymore, and he doesn’t give a shit about delivering a neat solo to his audience.

jake | 9/26/2007, 7:29 pm EST

Hey CHarles, stop listening to queer music and bow down to worship the metal gods.

CaptainWierdo | 9/24/2007, 11:38 pm EST

Temallica?

They are ‘teh suck’!

‘Stanga’… what a stupid album name.

Ironica are a group of jaded, money-grubbing smelly-men.

I’m money-grubbing too; the difference is that I don’t call myself an artist, or want to sue my fans (not that I have fans).

Lars’ breath smells like bin juice.

Finally, if you like their music, good for you, but don’t try to pretend that they aren’t wankers.

CHarles Davis | 9/16/2007, 8:21 pm EST

Metallica does suck. They always have. Their music sounds like a compromise between punk/hardcore, and rock/metal. I would rather listen to one or the other. A lot of people I know are either nostalgic for Metallica, or maybe they think that’s what good music really is, and that’s unfortunate. Metallica blows out the ass.

Nate | 8/1/2007, 2:06 pm EST

very true but still

jake | 7/31/2007, 1:51 pm EST

Woah! Nate! It’s not just Lars Ulrich. The real face of evil is their jackass manager.

Nate | 7/29/2007, 6:55 pm EST

why do people still think metallicas good? ok if ure in 2 some of there new stuff i dont care but i think that there destroying there old fans love for them especially the greedy drummer who wont let them do ANYTHING at all if he doesnt get rich and the symphony versions of there song are horrible i love metallica but they need to stop making crap and more metal! this is bullshit!

jake | 7/9/2007, 1:29 pm EST

Damn straight, Alberto!

Alberto Guiza | 7/8/2007, 1:56 pm EST

IT’S VERY SAD BUT I HAVE TO ADMIT THAT METALLICA REALLY SUCKS NOW, THE OLD DAYS ARE GONE, THE GOOD STUFF WILL BE NO MORE, JAMES SHOWS NO MORE TALENT OR IMAGINATION IN HIS RIFFS AND LYRICS, LARS AS ALWAYS IS MORE CONCERNED ABOUT MAKING MORE MONEY AND “EXPERIMENTING” WITH NEW THINGS, C’MON GUYS!!! YOU SUCK WHEN YOU TRY TO DO WHAT THE NEW BANDS DO, YOU’RE METAL! NO SHITTY HIP HOP-PUNK-SKA-ELECTRONIC-LIMP-L INKINPARESQUE THING, SURE LARS WILL SAY AS ALWAYS THAT THEY NOW DO WHAT THEY WANT, THAT THEY STLL SOLD MORE THAN THE FIRST RECORDS AND ALL THAT SHIT THAT MANY BELIEVE, FACE IT…COMPARING THE FACTORS, POBLATION, MASS MEDIA AVAILABLE NOW I THINK THAT A RECORD LIKE MASTER OR JUSTICE IN THESE DAYS COULD BROKE ALL RECORDS AND IF YOU COLUD IMAGINE A RECORD LIKE THE LOADS OR ANGER WERE RELEASED IN THE 80′S METALLICA PROBABLY WOULD CEASED TO EXIST BEFORE THE 90′S, JUST LISTEN TO THE GARAGE ALBUMS, THE FIRST HAVE COOL COVERS, AND THE LAST….TURN THE PAGE!!, WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT CRAPPY SHIT!?AND KIRK HAMMET THE ONLY ONE IN THE BAND THAT STILL SHOWS TALENT IS LIMITED BY JAMES-LARS AND THE FUCKIN ASSHOLE BOB ROCK, IT SEEMS THAT WE WILL NEVER LISTEN AGAIN SOLOS LIKE THE ONE ON MASTER , DAMAGE, BLACKENED OR EVEN ROAM,FORGET ABOUT METALLICA…THEY WERE GODS BUT THEY SUCK NOW, I PREFER BANDS LIKE SLAYER ( WHO ARE STLL NOT METAL GODS BUT METAL SPEED DEMON GODS ), RAMMSTEIN, THERION, AND MANY OTHER GOOD BANDS THAT HAVE CREATED THEIR OWN STYLE AND BECOME BETTER WITH THE YEARS.

RoCkStArZ | 6/30/2007, 7:36 pm EST

dudes metallica rocks they have some very inspiring music and still influence most of my writings i play their music all the time and anyone who hate metallica is either and fuckhole dickwade rapper or a true blue fucking poser or just emo btw nothing agianst emo’s just dont cut ur self near me lol but seriously trust me metallica rocks outloud

jake | 6/24/2007, 5:51 pm EST

The only good song Metallica has made since ‘and Justice’ is Enter Sandman, and even it was nothing like the good ol’ days. I saw somewhere online that they did a show earlier this year, where they played Dyers Eve. It was the most God awful piece of shit i’ve ever seen. If they’re going to turn they’re mastepieces into crap, they need to just retire.

ONE OF THE BEST BAND EVER! | 6/13/2007, 3:57 pm EST

Metallica rules. They are amazing, and anyone who thinks otherwise is retarded. Or a poser, and probley listens to Green day.

MetallicThrasher | 5/17/2007, 6:45 pm EST

Metallica ruled and still rules!!!

Paul McCartney | 2/21/2007, 11:12 pm EST

I used to like these blokes when they did speed metal covers of mine and John’s songs. I went to see a couple of their shows and they turned me on to some good California weed. Now they’ve gotten old like me and sold out worse than I have. At least I still get high and have the sympathy to fuck a one legged woman instead of spending all my free time on how to make as much money as possible and piss of my fans.

Disappointed Big Fan | 2/17/2007, 9:43 pm EST

Metallica is a very talented band, best ever, in my opinion. They can kick ass playing blazing fast and melodically slow. Let’s be honest people, anyone who even remotely like St. Anger is not a true Metallica fan. It was pure dissapointing, trash-can banging garbage. Everyone wants metallica to force themselves to play heavy speed metal. The result was St. Anger. Face it, they’re older and successful. Nobody with that much money is angry. But they still have awesome musical talent. I’d rather have a genuine natural effort on their part to compose songs that have excellent solos and rhythm even if it meant a lighter or slower sound.

Balls Deluxe | 2/2/2007, 7:21 pm EST

Kirk says re. producer Bob Rock: “I can’t picture us doing an album without Bob Rock. If there’s anyone who deserves the title of fifth member of the band, it’s definitely him”.

Hmmm. That’s too bad. Then I can’t picture Metallica ever doing another album that doesn’t suck. Metallica is obsolete.

It’s not the man I ‘hate’ (Bob Rock), I just personally don’t like his production, or his concepts.

The last good Metallica record was “and Justice for All”. The Black album was NOT a masterpiece, although all the new ‘fans’ that Metallica picked up at that time (through mainstream airplay) wouldn’t know any better. If only the song “One” hadn’t of been so popular with non-Metallica fans, the band would have never been so eager to sell out and betray their true sound. I, for one, stopped listening to their new musical exploits, although I still had to suffer through that godawful Bob Segar cover when it was all over the radio. Yuck!

Last summer, I heard the song “Eye of the Beholder” for the first time in years. I thought to myself ‘Wow! This song was gutsy, particularly in light of the excessive bandying around of “Freedom” in the past few years by politicians etc.’ The band used to be so significant.

Wolffer | 2/2/2007, 11:02 am EST

Well, if you hate Bob Rock, read this interview with Metallica on Stereo Warning — http://www.stereowarning.com

And also, to the muzak hater, Metallica (or any other band) doesn’t have the option to not allow people to cover their songs. Anyone can record any song they want, as long as they pay a set fee of a few cents per song (look up “mechanical license” if you don’t believe it). Unfortunately sometimes people take these songs and totally destroy them…

Balls Deluxe | 1/14/2007, 12:45 pm EST

Bob Rock was/is the kiss of death for Metallica. He is the producer bands go to when they want to sell their integrity for an ostensibly larger, more mainstream fanbase. Just look at the Cult. Bob Rock ruined 2 of the best bands that the 80’s had to offer, and there are probably more I don’t know about. He probably had something to do with the Guns N’ Roses “Use Your Illusion” fiasco as well, no doubt. Lars Ulrich can defend Bob Rock until he’s blue in the face, but it’s not going to change the fate of Metallica one bit. The same argument applies to Matt Sorem, the quintessential “replacement drummer”(the most boring rock drummer to ever have a gig). He and Bob Rock are secretly working from the inside to make rock music suck. Good job guys! WARNING! If Bob rock is producing your album, or Matt Sorem is in your band, it is too late for you - you are done.

Stupid teenagers wearing linkin park t-shirts in 2003 and now wearing hell knows any other shity band´s merchandise!! all of you! can u get over the napster thing??? can u stop saying that MetallicA are sell-outs?… just stop that shit!Mediocre! Thousand times and ignorant! Can they once and for all stop with the stupid Napster’s topic, being sell-outs and all this rubbish? .. now think about the impact that it took a gentle band of gods as Metallica in the music, you like it or not, already this, the history cannot be a change of direction! It does not matter if Metallica or alone Lars Ulrich sing with Justin Timberlake or with the prostitute who sings ” the beat of my heart ” shit, what was she called?? .. can mistakes change the history? .. not!! Certain? Ozzy has a show in MTV, Dickinson has executive’s clothes in TV shows, those of Cradle of Filth without makeup are clowns, are nothing, some other self-called rocker is playing golf now, …and u could be better musician than hammet, ulrich, or even hetfield.. of course u can, but u will always want to achieve what they have achieved, u will always want to cause the impact that they caused in the world of the music, their lirycs, songs, could not be so virtuou, they produced the feeling that you wanted to have a band, they made u like metal, that you know .. can be be enough, already, leave MetallicA the place that they belong, that one reserved for of the gods!

Metallica, the good , the bad, the ugly or whatever, if you want to justify stealing music because someone is weak, then , go ahead.
Maybe, they might just say fuck you and retire because all these asshole fucks want to listen are not reward someone for hardwork. I would not got to work without pay or below minum and why should there be a double standard. The music business is cut throat and just because some stars are rolling, that does not mean people should blow it for future rockers.

Mmmm…i just wanted to let you all know that Satan himself arose through my floor boards last night…and told me that the early Metallica records kick the shit out of any popular metal nowdays. Having said that…there are now other things to jerk off to..bands that aren’t played on MuffTV!!! Dodheimsgard, Cryptopsy, Moonsorrow, Satyricon, The Wicked, Ulver, Limbonic Art, Aborted, Children of Bodom, OPETH!!!…basically…ev eryon e clinging to their tv’s and mainstream radio for metal band updates have wasted their lives. Checkout what bands play the Wacken Festival in Germany every year…and then add them to your playlist…and go from there.

metallica’s not the same band they were when they first came around, stop whining about it. They changed or “matured” into what they wanted to, not based on what you or anyone else wanted them to be, i personally would have let bob rock go the day he came into the studio.james shouldnt have stopped drinking, he should have just drank less. rehab turned him into a puss and so did that therapist. this is a different generation, find something else to listen to, personally ive heard enough metallica atleast there old stough i wont touch st anger cuz it doesn’t sound good to me. there old stuff i grew up on and i didn’t think those albums sucked and i still don’t.to who ever said jason newstead ruined the band, your dumb, cliff was better but jasons bass was so barely noticable he couldn’t have ruined the band, now they got rob on bass. just figure out that its different music now with the same name and stop crying because metallica didnt make another damn master of puppets. honestly with all the bands out there you have plenty of stuff to fill your playlist then for whom the bell tolls and hit the lights.hang on to your 80’s metal cuz your only gonna find it on old cds.

Rackell | 11/17/2006, 1:57 pm EST

Hmmm. I forgotten is there still any true heavy metal bands left in the world. It changed.

Orion | 11/15/2006, 1:28 pm EST

Lrgo0159 is obviously Madonna fan.

Cory are you still listening to Megadeth? What a toolbag - even the name Megadeth is ridiculous, come on!

Now Zack knows what the hell he is talking about!

A lot of comments seem to be focused on money. Do you like their music or not? If not, then that’s your opinion and that’s cool. There is no doubt that their current music isn’t as “metal” as it used to be. Again, they’re not 20 and angry anymore which was the basic premise to a lot of their earlier music. I’m just happy that they’re still together making music after almost 30-years. Not too many bands (metal or not) have lasted long. There’s not a band on earth that wouldn’t give their left testicle to have the success that Metallica has had and will continue to have.

Zack | 11/14/2006, 2:34 pm EST

First of all if you read Rolling Stone you suck. Metal fans dont read Rolling Stone, I feel like a douche for even being on this web site, Metallica doesnt suck, and they are not a hair band like some idiot said on one of these comments, if you knew anything about metal you would know they are the Anti Hairband if anything, just liston to Damage Inc. Yeah their latest records arent that great but they still rock I dont care what anybody says.

Chris Olivia... | 11/13/2006, 1:33 pm EST

Listen up!!! Metallica sucks harder than Tracie Lords! If I were not already dead, I would break one of my Les Pauls over Kirk Hammets head! He sounds like the studio player for Britney Spears these days. Metallica quit making true “metal” music the day Cliff Burton died. I have talked many times to Cliff about this, and he agrees! Cliff says he should have joined up with Megadeth when he had the chance! So my advice to all of you is too ditch Metallica for good, and check out Testament, Megadeth, or the older SAVATAGE albums that featured me on lead guitar. This is where you can find the true metal music. Good night, and Piss-Off!!! You Wankers!!!!!

I, for one, don’t see how anyone could call Metallica influential. They may have influenced a generation of bad hairmetal bands, and thats about it.All the really good, seminal metal bands were from the 70’s. As far as I’m concerned Metallica is just a bunch of whiny marginally talented megalomaniacs, who never deserved all the attention they have recieved.

cory | 11/11/2006, 5:02 am EST

daniel, I THINK THATS WHAT THE QUESTION IS! DO YOU NEED SOMEONE OR SOMETHING TO MAKE IT METAL? THERE IS SOMETHING THAT MADE METALLICA THE BEST, FOR A TIME! BUT THE MAGIC IS GONE, AS A FAN OF THERE MUSIC A LONG TIME AGO, LET THEM BE GODS AND STOP MAKING RECORDS! BUT BACK TO THE POINT, PUNK MUSIC HAD GODS,ROCK HAD GODS,BLUES HAD GODS, BUT THERE IS SOMTHING HOW YOU LOOK AT IT! YES, METAL IS GONE FOR NOW, BUT NOT FOR LONG! ARISE

Metallica stopped being a band a long time ago. They are a corporation. They churn out crappy product that people buy for the brand name, not for the quality. If they go public, I’ll buy their shares but please keep their music away from my ears.

daniel | 11/10/2006, 6:29 pm EST

all this talk about being hypocritical, about being about the money, not the music. I wonder how many of their buisness decisions are made by them, and how many are made by their managment. Qprime is one of th biggest managers of artists in the world. If I was an artist, I would want them, cause at the end of the day we all need money, if we have mre we are better of. Only the bystanders who are jelous get upset if someone has money. Do you like the music??/Or do you hate the music, thats what it should be about. Don’t like the music, don’t buy the albums. Keep all this other shit out of it.

daniel | 11/10/2006, 2:32 pm EST

taste is a very peronal thing. As long as people realize that their opinion is only good for them, they can say what they like. Does not change the fact that I think Metallica does not suck, never have, never will. Metallica once said, Metal up your arse, that means that they don’t give a stuff what you thin, what I think or anyone else for that matter. They create art, for them, not you or me. Get over it.

Orion | 11/9/2006, 2:01 pm EST

“Does Metallica suck” was the question right? That is a broad question that has elicited some pretty broad answers so f**ck off Brian - I didn’t miss the point. Also, I’m not apologizing for anything - I agree, St. Anger is not a good album at all and I rarely listen to it - it has in my opinion 2-3 good songs at best. The point I was making is that St. Anger was released more for them not us. It was the first time that all band members contributed to the song writing and the first album that was recorded live without too much mixing and overdubbing = poor sound quality. I don’t know if that’s a good thing musically, but it’s very good for them personally as a band. I did like the fact that they tried to rekindle that old hard core, fast, garage sound with multiple tempo changes. It was forced but so what - they seem to be headed back to their basic roots. I’m very interested to hear their next studio album. Bob Rock can go f**ck himself and I’m very happy to see him gone. I agree, he was a horrible influence. I’ve been listening to this band since 1983 and they sound as good now as they ever have (minus Cliff of course)partuculary since they picked-up Trujillo. I wish they had him since Cliff died - Newstead was horrible! Metallica is definitely not the band they used to be but who is? Every band that has been around for over 20-years eventually fades to black but it doesn’t mean they suck.

I would think that even if someone stole somthing from Bill Gates house that he would still call the cops or if a windows user stole somthing he would sue them… Also Lars has said many times that it wasnt about the money. Get the facts right u wankers!

noname | 11/9/2006, 2:42 am EST

The funniest thing that no matter how much the band sucks now, folks go buy their new albums anyway (I mean the fans who truly loved them in 80’s). I always do that hoping that they “finally return to the roots and make some great music”…and find that they do not. I’m sure Metallica is aware of that too: “We did a lousy-bob-rock-album and the suckers (fans) ate that again! Even hit the Billboard top! Let’s keep on going that way!” Thank God they don’t release a new album per one year since 1999 ))))

danny D | 11/8/2006, 3:39 pm EST

first off metallica is one of the most influencial rock bands of the last 30 years or so. Their artistic peak was probably “master of puppets” and after cliff died it oviously left quite a hole in their sound and song craft….
from their we get prog-metal-excess with “…and justice for all”
and then theres “the black album”, which is brilliant for the fact that it sold metal to the mainstream while still maintaining metallicas brutallity but also adding a pop side. no wonder it was so huge, no one had heard a sound like that before. the only thing that came close at the time would probably be def leppard.

but from there I honestly think bob rock got into metallicas sub consious and bred a new kind of metallica. unfortunately I think this disentigrated any chance of them challenging their musical boundaries to epic limits again(unless you consider load and reload epic).

all well, metallica altered the course of heavy metal (for better or for worse)and for that I think they deserve a little more respect. even though there are lots of reasons not to respect them(napster, lars in general). it’s just the music that matters in the end, and metallica definately have a masterful legacy to back them in their early years, and thats why they don’t suck. but as an institution metallica definately sucks, considering how pretentious the band(especially lars)comes off in “some kind of monster.”

nate | 11/8/2006, 2:56 pm EST

man…all this corporate talk…

i knew metallica sucked before all that…

Mike | 11/8/2006, 2:21 pm EST

Metallica has sucked since they decided that they needed to be POPULAR… talk about a band squandering it’s legacy! They’ve sucked for more years now than they were good…

Jacob | 11/8/2006, 11:58 am EST

Why is everyone so down on the black album? I effing love that thing.

Also, I thought that St Anger was quite good lyrically. Musically, some of the songs were pretty good. Others were not.

Love,
Jables

rocky | 11/8/2006, 11:14 am EST

What the fuck’s up with all the comparisons to Tool? Tool blows hard. Their songs are more similar to each other than AC/DC’s (and although I love AC/DC I don’t mean that in a good way). Every Tool or Perfect Circle song amounts to the lead singer whimpering some incoherent lyrics, then belting out the chorus, while the bass player slowly goes jug, jug, jug on his instrument. Aside from their tendencies toward hip hop, Korn is a much better band.

rocky | 11/8/2006, 11:06 am EST

If all Metallica cared about was money, they’d give the fans what they want: Fast, heavy shit like they used to play. But they don’t. They’re sick of it and want to play simple, lame shit (Reloaded) or put out entire albums of themselves fucking off in the studio (St. Anger). They’ve run their course. They no longer want to make the kind of music that made them great, and they’re not going to produce anything better. They just need to go away before their egos destroy their legacy.

Sixth Root | 11/8/2006, 9:36 am EST

They should be stripped of their assets, given a crappy apartment… with an analog recording studio, one instrument per player, and a cooler of bologna. Well…and some Yeagermeister. Comfort and Pro Tools doesn’t make good metal. It’s makes lazy corporate rock! But knowing them they would turn it into a TV show…they need to lock themselves up for months…the slick, dated production just isn’t cool anymore!

Chris | 11/8/2006, 4:22 am EST

Hey ‘lick my balls’, Yngwie Malmstein is one of the greatest guitarists of all time but that don’t make him good. Being able to paint a house really fast don’t mean you could paint the sistine chapel. St Anger was utter tripe!

I think all u guys with negative comments should just shut the f*%k up. Metallica are one of the greatest metal bands of all time! Yes there work has declined a little as of late but they are still gods. F*$k the rest of YOU!

noname | 11/8/2006, 1:00 am EST

Metallica’s been going off the rails by the time new-punky-grungy-shitty music appeared, and it’s no surprise that they were lost spiritually and musically. When you got the big money you can’t just say: that’s enough, no more of this! Those guys made the usual way, from rags to riches, and they’re ok. No one cares in Rolling Stone about how great for example Judas Priest or U.D.O. - the bands that truly rocked in 80’s and keep on rocking nowadays. There would be no big noise about Metallica if they played the same music as they did in 80’s.

cogs | 11/8/2006, 12:36 am EST

kirk hammet is not creative. therefore he cannot be one of the top 15. How can you put him on par with people like jimmy page, joe satriani, steve vai, keith richards, mark knophler(?) …etc.
You need a fuckin reality check, stop lisr=tening to your fuckin shred guitar and listen to some real melody. Fool.

lick my balls | 11/7/2006, 11:27 pm EST

Kirk Hammet is in the top 15 of greatest guitarists of all time. This includes their current works. If that doesn’t tell you something I dont know what will. In the last 3 years i have seen metallica twice in philly, twice in san fran and in dublin. I dont travel internationally to see a band that sucks.

Kyle Orton's Dirty Beard | 11/7/2006, 9:06 pm EST

Opeth, TooL, Slayer, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, and Rage Against the Machine have all taken metal in promising, original and exciting directions. Metallica has chosen to go in the direction of money. With regard to Metallica, the value of staying true to the art was no match for the cash. In the long run, Slayer will prove to be more relevant to thrash metal’s blossoming than Metallica. Post …Justice Metallica is metal for the bubblegummers. They got what they wanted- recognition by the suits.

If Rick cannot save em nobody can. I am always interested in hearing the new stuff but it never lives up to the old stuff. When the Black album came out, I stopped listening to them. Bob Rock ruined them. They should have gone to Rubin years ago

Metallica doesn’t suck…but they lack direction when it comes to songwriting. They lost this direction long ago (the moment at which the bus rolled over Cliff Burton). They are better live now than they were in ‘84 when I first saw them. Better musicians, etc. …just not better songwriters.

Sandeep | 11/7/2006, 6:09 pm EST

I’m one of the people who got the point of St. Anger. It’s a band trying to return to form. The individual songs were well done, but there was no flow to the album. That said…If the next one sucks then I’m done with them. I’ll have Kill Em All, Ride The Lightning, Master of Puppets, ..And Justice For All and the Black Album on my iPod and reject everything else. The bigger crime is that System of a Down is going on hiatus.

POed | 11/7/2006, 5:30 pm EST

The Metallica story is sad. They were perfect. Everything I could imagine in a band. Then out of nowhere - they became everything I hated in a band. The saddest thing is that they made money cheating and distancing themselves from the very people that brought them to the party. The fans that were ridiculed for loving them. Lars and James - go fuck yourselves!
That’s right - I am angry.

PeteHagen | 11/7/2006, 5:23 pm EST

OK, here’s what it is:
Metallica throughout the 80’s made the most rocking rock they possibly could. Then they met Bob Rock. He helped them tweak their sound to make the most money they could possibly make. Now that they’re richer than God, they’re working with Rick Rubin and focusing on making the rock again. Search out the 2 new songs floating around on the internet. They rock.
Also, how did this board turn into a debate about how much better Tool is than Metallica? That new Tool album… gobbles the gun. More boring than anything I’ve EVER listened to.

Kyle Orton's Dirty Beard | 11/7/2006, 5:00 pm EST

Metallica has passed on. A moment of silence, please…

Now, back to listening to relevant music: TooL.

anti-skeptic | 11/7/2006, 4:28 pm EST

I think every band reaches a creative peak and then levels out or fades. Metallica suck because they claim that their current work is an artistic peak. They have stopped being critical of themselves like they used to. This kind of smug self-love is the death of any artist.

T.C. | 11/7/2006, 4:10 pm EST

I dont know if I would go as far as to say that they suck. I would rather say theyre lost. Even though they havent put out an album that i want to know front to back since master of puppets there has always been atleast one or two good songs on every album they put out. Fuel, aint my bitch both fantastic songs lost on crappy albums. as far as selling out I agree they have done some questionable things to us as listeners (napster) countless remixes that i know they have to ok. but other bands do it too . everyone does it (yes even slayer, they had a cd come out on 6/6/06 exclusively at hot topic…wtf and they cancelled the show that was supposed to be that night??) after i poked around on youtube ive heard some of the new stuff buts its a live mix so its not ideal but with rick rubin kicking them in the ass in the studio im not too worried anymore so have faith or have faith no more either way they aint going nowhere for a while

aka | 11/7/2006, 3:39 pm EST

They obviously don’t suck, but are they sell-outs? yeah, i’d have to say they are. And they definately matter in metal. Look how many people voiced their opinion. The fact that you need to ask means they’re pretty big, and musically they were once the greatest… and don’t compare them to Slayer and Pantera. You just can’t do that. It’s like a metal trinity.

Krystof | 11/7/2006, 3:37 pm EST

Not to say that Metallica doesn’t put on a good live show cuz for metal fans they do…but the problem with their music is that it all sounds the same…actually to be techncial, all metal sounds the same to me…guitars always have the same rhythems, drums are all the same…where’s the innovation?

Jerkwad | 11/7/2006, 3:32 pm EST

I’m sorry, but the following may be one of the funniest things ever written by anyone:

“At some point one of them must’ve stopped dry-humping stacks of hundreds, wiped their diarrhea mustache and agreed to allow “Unforgiven” to be interpreted into elevator Muzak. I know this because I heard the shit while three old folks tapped their brittle feet to the mellow beat as I wondered if hell was a hospital elevator.”

Carlos Dominguez | 11/7/2006, 3:18 pm EST

Metallica has sucked since The Black Album. Horrible album. And Justice for All is mariginal at best. Their last and best is Master of Puppets. Since the loss of Cliff Burton they took a dive. If really want to talk about longevity, integrity and not selling out, the lets talk “SLAYER”! Metallica sucks!

tom | 11/7/2006, 3:13 pm EST

Metallica has always sucked ass. Every white trash hillbilly moron who has ever worn a Metallica t shirt should either burn themselves alive or go get an education.

Brian | 11/7/2006, 2:40 pm EST

People like Orion have missed the point. It really doesn’t matter how they sound live (they sound OK, but not as good as they used to, by the way … they don’t sound nearly as good playing their old stuff … sorry). I think what we’re discussing is what they’re releasing into our record stores which is what they’ll be judged on. As many Metallica fans as there are, I’d bet most base their opinions on their records. The “missing the point on what St. Anger was supposed to be” is irrelevant and an excuse offered by an apologist. The record sounds like shit. The songs are not good songs even if they weren’t recorded in primitive form. The songwriting is BAD. It takes nothing away from their early work. Yes, they blazed an enormous trail. But their new contributions are not up to par. They’re just not. This is coming from someone who grew up worshipping Metallica and defending the ‘Justice’ record from people who didn’t like ITS sound. You can’t say their lyrics on ‘Justice’ don’t embody how most of us felt climbing out from under Reaganomics. ‘St. Anger’ says nothing. It’s bad. It’s shoddy. Move on.

Ray | 11/7/2006, 2:27 pm EST

Jimmy - St. Anger sucks. It doesn’t suck because I want to hate on Metallica. I don’t want to hate on anybody. It sucks because the songwriting is just a former shadow of what Metallica used to be able to compose in the ’80’s.

Sabbath had a great run from the 1st album until Sabotage. The last two albums with Ozzy were weak. They picked up their last shot of greatness with Dio (Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules), then they went down the toilet. They expired in 1983.

Nobody gets on them, because we don’t have armies of Metallica loyalists (fascists) claiming “Forbidden” or “Cross Purposes” or whatever is a classic. Everybody knows they suck.

Metallica is dead. They died about 1992, maybe even 1990. If they can perform some Dylan-like resurrection to greatness again it would be a miracle.

Orion | 11/7/2006, 1:52 pm EST

First, for those of you who don’t feel that Kill ‘em All, Master, Lightning, Justice, the Black album plus the original Garage Days are not instant metal classics which still serve as blueprints for all metal bands today then you’re simply snot-nosed morons. Wake-up! Megadeath? Please spare me that BS comparison. We all know that story by now. The theory of “what have you done for me lately” is simply selfish, ignorant thinking. Any of you idiots been to a Metallica show in the past few years? Go see them live and then tell us that they “can’t rock anymore”. They still put on one of the best live shows out there today. Second, of course their new music sounds different - they’re now in their 40’s and not 20-years old anymore. Most of you can’t even see what St. Anger was really about. It wasn’t supposed to be a meticulously recorded studio album. That album was more about a “release”, a rediscovery and a rebirth more than anything and I’m sure it took a lot of guts to release that album. What metal band from the early 80’s is still around making influential new music (not reunions)and selling out shows today? Exactly - nobody. Corporate band with corporate music? One can argue that corporate america latched onto Metallica, not the other way around. I’m sure you hardcore jerkoffs out there in the same position would simply stick to your “f**k everbody” attitude and just turn down the radio play, videos and everything else that comes with being the biggest rock/ metal band in the world? I don’t think so. Life has a way of changing your priorites and perspective. Like the boys have always said - they’re always going to make music that they feel like making and if you don’t like it, then go f**k yourself! They’ve had that same mentality since 1979 and it hasn’t changed in almost 30-years.

Jimmy | 11/7/2006, 1:36 pm EST

What is it with people hating on Metallica? What did they ever do to you?
- They’re not relevant!
Obviously relevant enought for all these people to comment on this.
- They haven’t put out good music lately!
Um, yes they have. Just listen to St. Anger really loud. Come on, Black Sabbath hasn’t been cranking out the hits lately and I don’t ever hear anybody trying to put them down.
- They don’t rock anymore!
Have you seen them live lately? I saw three times in 2004, and I thought they were awesome, especially with Trujillo. Try catching their set from Rock Am Ring 2006 or the Seoul Korea show that’s floating around. They still got it.
When will all this Metalli-bashing end?!?!?!?

Brian | 11/7/2006, 1:21 pm EST

Metallica is a shell of its former self. People fell all over each other to give ‘St. Anger’ a positive review. Why? It’s an uninspired, disjointed, awful-sounding effort. ‘Load’ and ‘Reload’ are better simply because the songwriting isn’t shoddy and the songs, albeit wihtout teeth, at least don’t make me want to vomit. There’s no intensity or anger left in this band. I really, really wish they would stop because they are making fools of themselves. Their records from ‘Kill ‘em All’ to even the black album are some of the most timeless, relevant metal recordings there ever were. But then something happened and they just died. I don’t want to hear a Rick Rubin Metallica album. I don’t want to hear any Metallica album. I want it to stop. Do they suck? Can you really say the band that recorded ‘Master of Puppets’ sucks? You can’t. But are they dead? Ah, that’s a different question. They are, indeed, dead.

Kash | 11/7/2006, 1:20 pm EST

Metallica has sucked since they lost the Grammy to Jethro Tull. They got bitchy, they got poppy, they got Bob Rock.

I mean, their early major albums (Kill ‘em all, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets,…And Justice for All) is one of the most consistent album runs ever. Yes, Metallica was loved by critics and fans alike. That’s what makes their fall from grace that much more heartbreaking, and triggers such an angry reaction. They were found out to be hypocrites with Napster.

Anyone that doesn’t have at least some respect for old Metallica is either not a fan of metal, or knows jack-shit about musical composition.

yep | 11/7/2006, 1:19 pm EST

The fact that this article has literally hundreds of responses already tells you that metallica is in fact, still the shit one way or another. Metallica built the foundation of many metal bands and no one better even try to argue that because 80% of the good artists today will admit metallica influeneced them. But what people need to understand is that metallica isnt in its young prime anymore, when they first started the things and people that influenced them were completly different. Every band changes styles on different albums, and if its not your style, then dont listen to it, i won’t lie i think the new metallica album is shit, but thats just my opinion, i would still defend the old albums with my life. And as far as metallica just being a “silly band, for silly people”, thats just stupidity and you might as well not even waste your time here, thats not an argument, its an opinion, and a weak one at that. Metallica still rains supreme in metal, and all you closed minded selfish fucks that cant deal with change without going to therapy can get bent if you dont like it, GO BEARS (yes they just lost, thats part of that ever faithful thing) Semper Fi

wank | 11/7/2006, 12:59 pm EST

Metallica has always been silly music for silly people to listen to. The lyrics and the singing are a joke. Aside from the music itself, just watch James and Lars in an interview. That should be reason enough to dislike this band.

Trinity | 11/7/2006, 12:59 pm EST

DT | 11/7/2006, 12:00 pm EST

If they cant write a good album with rick rubin producing, they are truly done, not that I think rubin is a miracle worker. OK rick, make it sonically like the slayer discs you’ve worked on(one of the best metal drum sounds ever on south of heaven, sounded like real drums, no excessive snare volume). and kick their creative juices back into gear. the combination of the best of their classic era(some compositional adventure, quotable, relavent lyrics about life) and the best of what they did after that(the grooves man, they couldnt do those prog rock excessive time signature shifts forever) if its good i will buy a Metallica CD for the first time since Justice

Ray | 11/7/2006, 11:55 am EST

someone down below had a great comment, as well. Bands simply have their shelf lives. Whatever drive, powers, demons, youth, creativity, etc. –whatever you want to call it that gives certain bands greatness simply expires at some point.

This doesn’t mean they necessarily lose popularity, radio play, or their greatness in concert, but the songwriting/album quality stops at some point. Check out the Stones after Tattoo You, Floyd after Waters left, Aerosmith after the 70’s, McCartney after Band on the Run..sooner or later bands just lose “it”, and the difference is, like the poster below said, some bands know when the time is to call it a day (The Police, Zeppelin) and some just keep on annoying us (Metallica). Only the smallest handful of artists seem to have been the exception to this rule, like U2 or Bob Dylan (his last three albums).

J-Mills | 11/7/2006, 11:55 am EST

From a business and, as of lately, a reputation stand point, yea they suck. But musically, HELL FUCKING NO!! We are talking about one of the greatest, if not the greatest, metal bands of all time. Granted, I personally feel they have gone down hill ever since ReLoad, but their music is some of the greatest metal I have ever heard.

Ray | 11/7/2006, 11:47 am EST

They’re just really really average now. Kill ‘Em All through Justice represents aggressive, different, angular, obtuse, weird, fucked up rock. It was so radically different from everything else. Now they are just boring.

You can talk about money, Bob Rock, Cliff, make-up, hair, whatever all day long, none of it really matters. What matters is their songwriting after Justice took a massive hit, and they no longer are writing interesting and different songs. The greatness and epicness is gone.

scooby | 11/7/2006, 11:44 am EST

Ken Vail Jr. | 11/7/2006, 11:25 am EST

They have never been one of my all-time fave bands anyways…they have the occasional tune I dig…I loved the ’some kind of monster’ movie, and ‘one’ is certainly one of the greatest songs ever….i thought ’st anger’ was an adventurous lp-no guitar solos was a crazy idea, but there were only a handful of memorable songs…

erik1624 | 11/7/2006, 11:24 am EST

Yes Metallica now SUCK!! They cut their hair, got sober and began to write feel good rock. I won’t even call it metal. Although you can never argue with songs from Ride the Lightning, Kill ‘em All, and …and Justice(truely epic in my mind)My theory is after the Justice tour they all said to each other “Lets promise to never again write music that rocks that fast and hard because quite frankly…we’re getting to old.” If you listen to the riffs and drum lines on “and Justice” especially the double bass stuff you gotta be a track star to perform that night after night. My thoery is they just got lazy!

chazzeroni | 11/7/2006, 11:12 am EST

Yeah, didn’t say Maiden was American. I have their albums, I have their DVDs, I know where they’re from. I said basically Metallica started sweating them in ‘83 and didn’t quit until Bob Rock convinced them they were a better pop-rock band anyway. Also, Maiden not speed metal? What are they then? Folk? Polka? Jazz? Emo?

Jimmy Jazz | 11/7/2006, 10:51 am EST

umm, chazzeroni? quick datapoints: 1) Maiden is not an American band. 2) They are also not speed metal.

other than that, I think the big question is why we’re all even still talking about Metallica in 2006? Lets be honest, how many bands that haven’t released what could legitimitly be called a ‘great album’ in 15 years still command our attention? Or what about the fact that they’ve only released three albums of (subpar) original material since that time? This is almost as bad as people getting excited about the new Guns and Roses album (I won’t believe it ’till I see it, by the way). Come on now folks, what reason do we have to believe the album won’t suck? Time to bury these fossils and move on.

Pedro13 | 11/7/2006, 10:49 am EST

All I can say is that I hope the band will take the time to read some of these comments… I doubt it, however if they do, I hope they take to heart, what some of their ex-fans have to say.. They are a sad group of formerly talented individuals.. I’d like to think that they still have the ability to rock yer f’n socks off.. But I have yet to see that post “And Justice For All” Please.. To to the members of METALLICA: If you read this.. Prove to all the ex fans that you’re all not just a bunch of washed up pansies…

Matt F | 11/7/2006, 10:41 am EST

I’ve liked a little something from everything they’ve done, but in retrospect, the Metallica I loved died after “…And Justice For All.” And the body was cremated sometime during the tour for the Black album. And the true spirit of James Hetfield screamed from his grave when they recorded “Mama Said” and the horrible cover of “Turn The Page.”

chazzeroni | 11/7/2006, 10:39 am EST

Metallica is the second best American band ever. Period. That being said, Maiden is the original monster of speed metal. Some people just don’t get St. Anger, which is really sad. I mean, come on, who’s not a millionaire and angry at the same time? What’s really sad is how many people bought Black Album and hailed it as their greatest. Did those people just not realize that the band had a career in the ’80s?

True Story:

England, 1998. Metallica appeared on a British music program along with British indie rockers Pulp. I believe both were promoting new records. While Pulp were speaking to the host of the show, Lars Ulrich stepped outside for a smoke. The backdrop of the set included a life-size wooden standie of Pulp’s frontman, Jarvis Cocker.

Aggravated at looking at this strange reproduction of himself, Cocker threw the standie out the 5th floor studio window. It came within inches of killing Lars. Imagine if it had.

toaster_perfect | 11/7/2006, 9:54 am EST

Metallica shows a good sign of talent in their earlier work, but now they just dont shine. They just need some way to bolster that old gleam, and they will rise again.

tomko | 11/7/2006, 9:51 am EST

Listen to the music.
What the band does shoulden’t affect how you rate thier music.
Thier newer stuff isen’t so hot but that dosent mean they suck.
Come on they made MASTER OF PUPPETS.
And all you people who label them as “sell-outs”.
Aren’t all bands sellouts by making money.
I think with exception to the The Black album which I don’t know how people can hate.
We should all decide that Metallica at one point fucking rocked.
And though thier new music may suck.
Everyone should agree Bob Rock is really what sucked in Metallica not Metallica themselves.

Bottom Line - Bob Rock sucks

mark | 11/7/2006, 9:41 am EST

bob rock the man that single-handedly destroyed metallica!!!!!!!

TheLawyer | 11/7/2006, 9:18 am EST

Metallica was finished by the time the Black album came out. The more time that has past since that point, the further lost they have become. They are the Tom Cruise of heavy metal bands at this point. Their glory days are long gone. Perhaps they should have invited Dave Mustaine back into the band to give them back the spines that they lost with the Napster debacle and the horrible most least metal decision to make Some Kind of Monster.

They are the greatest heavy metal band of all time but their time has come and gone because nothing good can last forever. Thankfully, we have their old material to remind us what was and what will never be…again.

I totally agree with Matthew. Bob Rock ruined Metallica, but unfortunately they allowed it. ST Anger was the worst sounding/produced album I ever heard in my life. It sounded like Lars was playing on a pair of kitchen pots bought at Walmart!

jon | 11/7/2006, 8:33 am EST

i wiah people would stop refering to bands in a plural sense “metallica have a responsibility..” like it’s a race of people or something. It shouls be singular, when you talk about corporations, no one words things that way. It’s just annoys me, but not as much as how hard metallica blows. They’re rock for the sake of rock, little else of relevance to anyone who wants to do anything more than bang their head.

Felix Rivera | 11/7/2006, 8:23 am EST

To me, Metallica’s best effort was from Master of Puppets to Garage Days Re-Revisited (my favorite Metallica recording) and …And Justice For All. When Bob Rock came along, fucking bitch!, that was the end.

The problem with Metallica isn’t actually there problem at all. Metallica’s problems are heavy metal fans in general. From the beginning of time (or at least the beginning of time as it exists to metalheads, 1970) and you will see things like, “they’re not as heavy as they used to be”, “this isn’t real metal”, “why is Axl playing the piano”. They are unforgiving bunch, especially on those bands that have the audacity to change. All of the youngsters coming to the Metallica game haven’t a clue that “metal” fans have been screaming “sell-out” Metallica’s way since Ride The Lightening because of that ballad (now considered classic) “Fade to Black”. Oh, and don’t forget the acoustic guitar intro to Fight Fire With Fire, apparently that sucked too. Lucky for those of us that likes bands that make good songs/records, Metallica decided to ignore these people and make good records. Sure there have been missteps (we didn’t need ReLoad), but they have a great catalog of records that speak for itself.

Classic:
Master of Puppets
Garage Days Re-Revisited
Metallica

Exc ellent:
Kill Em All
Justice
Load
Garage Inc.

Better than most metal records:
Ride the Lightning
St. Anger
Live Sh**

Okay, we’re not perfect
Reload
S&M

That’s a catalog that I would put up there with anyone in their era.

Anonymous | 11/7/2006, 7:30 am EST

The real problem isn’t even within the band at all. They got bombarded with a media blitz after the black album, a very swallowable release from a band that hadn’t made too many of them. Now they’re surrounded by greed-hogs that want to capitalize on their image as “one of the most important bands of the 20th Century,” all spurned on of course by Lars, to the chagrin of James and Kirk, the last two authentic geniuses in the band. Besides, they have nowhere near the fire they had when they were broke, drunk, and had something to be pissed off about. Complacency has taken a huge toll on the band. And people constantly telling them that they “have to get heavier on the next album” is in no way beneficial. I refer you to “St. Anger.” Yes, Metallica now, sadly, sucks. But if you listen to records like “Puppets” or “Justice,” you know that something of that quality can be churned out forever.

JASC411 | 11/7/2006, 6:53 am EST

METALLICA USE TO ROCK BACK IN THE 80′S. BUT NO LONGER. THEY HAVE BEEN GOING DOWNHILL SINCE THE BLACK ALBUM. BUT I HAVE A FEELING THAT THEY WILL ONE DAY ROCK AGAIN.

Matthew | 11/7/2006, 6:31 am EST

They were great until Bob Rock became their producer. He ruined them by condensing their sound and streamlining them for rock radio. Bob Rock, you suck.

mike t | 11/7/2006, 5:24 am EST

For me it begins and ends with “Ride The Lightening”. Enough said!

Amoniz | 11/7/2006, 4:59 am EST

Metallica is certainly one of the greatest bands od our time.
Maybe, in the 23rd century, they’d be considered as a classical composer-ship! Who knows?!
Their St.Anger record, yes, sucks hard! But don’t forget about their prior works, even the late S&M!
This is not a good way to sue a band with a single poor album!
I mean, even legendary bands, like Queen, have made crappy records in their career (Take Hot Space for instance.) but it won’t ever make them a poor band!
I mean they have (or had) reached the Top!
Nothing’s gonna change their position!

Dave fae Fife | 11/7/2006, 4:46 am EST

They need to go and make an album with Terry Date, or Michael Bienhorn, then we’ll know…

Cary | 11/7/2006, 3:53 am EST

Metallica was great. Now they are average, or at least they are producing very average music. There is no dout they all still have great musical talent, but talent does not equal great music.

Jimmy | 11/7/2006, 3:51 am EST

Metallica is still a fantastic band, there’s no doubt about that.

jaymz | 11/7/2006, 3:39 am EST

metallica sucks?? what the fuck is this??? metallica rules u all motherfukers and if u dont like that …well go fuck yourself because metallica is forever, they ll be back soon!!!!

Laurens from Indonesia | 11/7/2006, 3:35 am EST

When I was in high school in Jakarta, you had Metallica fans and Guns N Roses fans. I was with the latter. Metallica fans, this is your chance to redeem yourselves. Come to Indonesia. I’ll treat you on goat satay.

shookie blah | 11/7/2006, 2:51 am EST

shookie say:
metallica shoulda go quit quit when cliff die.
however:
the “justice” album was still very good.
he “black” album was pretty not good (save for “holier than thou”), but we must allow every underground cult phenomenon at least one record wherein they become a break-through smash. they deserved it. its a given: you make a bunch of great, left-of-the-dial records. then, you hire a fucking coke/cock-head pruducer to turn you into a digestable gel-cap.
then, you suck forever.
but you get to do the suck dance on a pile of money!
yup, metallica shoulda go quit quit when cliff died.

their past importance to modern music should neverbe underestimated, though……

Metallica doesn’t suck… all those great albums from Kill ‘Em All up to The Black Album proves that… unfortunately, everything they’ve put out since Black does suck… it’s a case of talented musicians not performing to their ablities, and it is sad.

Rick Rubin | 11/7/2006, 1:20 am EST

I love Metallica fans because they’ll buy ANYTHING! Metallica could issue a CD that’s just James saying “look people, we ran out of ideas years ago, we’d quit if we knew how, we suck already, what do we have to do to prove it to you?” and Metallica fans would say, THIS RULES!

I’m so excited to be producing this band! There hasn’t been a producer this overrated producing a band this overrated since…when was the last time I produced the Chili Peppers? Oh yeah, six months ago. Like anyone remembers!

HarryHenderson | 11/7/2006, 1:14 am EST

Metallica doesn’t suck. Bob Rock sucks. The guy is some sort of New Age creep. It will be interesting to see what Rick Rubin can do. If Metallica’s new album blows though I still think it will be partly due to Rock’s horrible influence on them for the past 15 years. As much as Rock liked to think he was keeping in tow with nu-metal/alternative metal he simply made the guys sound alot like a 90s version of Van Halen.

Topher | 11/7/2006, 1:12 am EST

Like most bands that have been around for decades (The Stones, Aerosmith, REM) Metallica have definitely fallen from their throne. The 80’s were good to this band. And up through the early 90’s all was right in the Metallica world. After the Black album their egos ballooned and Metallica ended up in therapy.

Ragman | 11/7/2006, 1:08 am EST

METALLICA KICK ASS… Just because they don’t play by the conformist rules of the metal community they get bashed.. And now the “hip” thing for non-metalheads to do is diss Metallica, when they have no clue what they’re talking about… Forget all the bullshit, listen to the albums, and make an honest decision… METALLICA RULE!

Mandela | 11/7/2006, 1:03 am EST

okay how about this… how many classic records did McCartney release in the 80’s? How about anyone from Led Zeppeln? and no Robert Plant’s solo work and the Firm’s stuff aren’t classic, they only contain a few classics. My point is EVERY great band falls, but the legends break up before it’s embarrassing and Metallica haven’t but then again, in comparrison to todays music I’d say they havent ecome that bad anyway. I am not evena fan but hell I enjoed a number of songs on there last record cause they did rock and they did so better than most current bands so no they are not what they once were just as no other great band has been able to claim to be this far into their career minus U2 and RHCP, but guys really, arent they at least enjoayble? theyre time to be the innovaters has long past and just because nothing has come along to take the torch in what we still call the post grunge world, doesnt mean we should hold it against Metallica for wanting to keep making music past their prime.

brandon | 11/7/2006, 12:59 am EST

they’ve pretty much sucked since cliff burton died(but the garage days re-revisited ep was pretty good)and justice sucked for the most part and the black album had some moments.other than that, yeah, they suck.

zach | 11/7/2006, 12:24 am EST

it was bob rock
they kicked ass until fuckin bob rock came in and made their sound shorter, less hard hitting, built for the radio, cheap, massed produced, shit that was/is not the metallica feel they got huge on
St. Anger was a sad realization of this. they band, and probably bob rock felt if they released a 8 minute track, some of which wasnt bad it would make up for the rest of the shitty album.
dont get me wrong i still believe they still have it. songs from stuff that isnt too old, ie reload, arent all bad.
and it is a great relief they have started going over jam tapes like they did back in the day. blame bob rock for the fall of one of the greatest bands of all time.
hopefully they boys still know how to make another Ride the Lightning (or, one can only pray, Master of Puppets) and more imporantly, Rick Rubin knows how to make a good 80s album.

answer:Metallica doesnt suck Bob Rock does and hopefully with him gone we can get a CD that sounds like anything from …And Justice For All or before

matt | 11/7/2006, 12:02 am EST

Metallica is pretty bad now. However, they were once great. I have a little theory; Metallica started to suck once they cut their hair.

Sammy Zalta | 11/6/2006, 11:56 pm EST

Yeah Metallica sucks now if you listen very very hard you can almost hear them selling out during Enter Sandman… I dont know im a professional musician and i think what they did with the whole Napster thing really pissed me off and that was there true low point. whatever there not growing as artist just enlarging there bank accounts. Hey heres a thought make a good album this time and maybe people will buy your albums

warhand | 11/6/2006, 11:53 pm EST

Ya Metallica sucks

A Simple Plan
Panic at the Disco
All American Rejects
Pete Doherty
My Chemical Romance

All these bands are just the bomb right?!

All of you Metallica haters/bandwagon jumpers go play in the fuckin traffic, look at the bands we are pounded with daily on rock radio (i.e. see above)these bands are heartless 3 cord, pop punk nirvana, greenday neo sound rip off sellouts. They are nothing. We should be thanking are lucky stars that we still can see a rock staple trying to still put forth there best in a genre that aome people have forgotten about. Let me gues Pearl Jam sucks to because they didn’t make TEN, or Vs. Gimme a break. Ya I know, the documentry on their break up, was a bit much. I’ll also agree that St. Anger wasnt even a Metallica album but an Album for Lars to sound shitty on. But agree with me that Load and Re-loaded were easy good beer drinkin rock music, the Black album is will go down in history as the BIGGEST metal album in history ( I say BIGGEST, because it wasn’t the best) and all their previous albums are staples and decadent must have for all rock/metal/slash/punk lovers of all ages………I SAY METALLICA FUCKIN RULES AND I HOPE THEY KEEP DOIN WHAT THEY LOVE CAUSE ILL BY A SHITTY METALLICA ALBUM BEFORE A GREAT EMO WHORE ALBUM.

WAR METALLICA

And this all from world’s biggest Nirvana fan….

Richard M. Nixon | 11/6/2006, 11:39 pm EST

I love how bands arent allowed to grow as artists anymore, change their sound at all, or god forbid….cut their hair!!!. All the “true metalheads” expect them to release And Justice For All over and over again, and cry about the good old days when Cliff rocked so hard….

cmon, cry some more. If you think they suck so bad, put out a metal album yourself

Couch Sloth... | 11/6/2006, 11:35 pm EST

In my thoughtless, thin-skinned opinion, which I’ve coarsened, debased, and denuded over the passing decades in my listless consumption of everything metal, Metallica became an out-a-timer band ala Ratt-Poison-Journey one screeching twenty-four hour news cycle after they chopped-off their magnificent-hair-helmuts and sold everything over to the troll doll
conglomerates. Bastards.

cathy p. | 11/6/2006, 11:33 pm EST

whoever wrote that the Beatles suck after Revolver needs to stop the crystal meth and get to rehab-or just fade to black….and by the way, the black album kicks ass-Cathy

eat meat | 11/6/2006, 10:53 pm EST

who cares anyways.they rocked like 20 years ago and people are still talking about them.

fuck hippie people.

Aaron D. | 11/6/2006, 10:50 pm EST

First, I couldn’t give two shits about Napster or any of that crap.

I simply like Metallica’s music. Everything from Kill’em All to Black makes me ribcage shake just thinking about it. I thought Load and Reload were criminally underrated. St. Anger had some great moments, but it’s definitely on the the lower rungs of the Metallica ladder.

ben | 11/6/2006, 10:32 pm EST

this band was relevant for about 6 years…they have done nothing to warrant respect for years, why are people still debating their credibility or talent?

Warren | 11/6/2006, 10:26 pm EST

…And Justice for All was there final call to thrash metal.(my favorite). I give Metallica credit for perfecting and progressing Metal music, but if they were going to throw aside thrash metal they could have at least gone progressive. Lord knows Kirk Hammet would have welcomed that approach.

JOHN | 11/6/2006, 10:19 pm EST

Metallica is a great band, they were right about napster…all you downloading motherfuckers are killing the music business…you just sit on your fat lazy asses and steal art that these artists spend years to create…

Ape | 11/6/2006, 10:14 pm EST

I don’t like Metallica, never did, not my kind of music. And there new stuff has just made me loathe them even more like a swift kick in the crotch.

Obivously there time has passed. There should be a band expiry date that all bands should follow, hinting towards Rolling Stones and U2

mike | 11/6/2006, 10:10 pm EST

yea they suck. Everyone thinks Lars Ulrich is americas doucebag. They liked it when Avril Lavigne did a remake of one of their songs. Pretty much everything is going down hill.

Icky42079 | 11/6/2006, 10:09 pm EST

I’m sorry U all suck . . . . Metallica rocked in ‘86,’96 and still ‘06 . . . Napster is the “swallow” champ in my book . . . anyway New metal band are KRAP esp. Slipnot . . . if you have to wear a mask to hide your anger . . . just listen to James “I want my anger to be free, I want my anger to be healthy . . . . SET IT FREE EE ! !”

they suck so hard, real rock bands and pure music is much better, there just a bunch of guys who think its cool to “rock” and don’t even know what that means. ask a real rocker like paul mccartney how metallica is, and he’ll say they suck ass. enough said

metallica used to be filthy until they sold out on the black album. Yes they care a lot about money, and st. anger was a horrible punk rock rendition. Hopefully they’ll stop sucking balls when they record with rick rubin.

I’m actually the guy who posted the essay that won this contest in July of 2003, (my essay’s the one mentioning Ja Rule) and whether or Metallica sucks, I still got 18 CDs, a book on the history of Metal, and two passes to an exclusive party. I still have a copy of The Orlando Weekly article listing me as the contest winner in my room.

Oh, and recently, some guy at rollingstone.com quote my article.

No complaints here.

JOSE | 11/6/2006, 9:41 pm EST

metallica is the most rocking band ever the people that says they are bad is becouse they don´t now anything about music … yeah St.anger is not a very good album but still rocks

phr34k | 11/6/2006, 9:28 pm EST

Uh-huh, and metallica have a responsibility of putting out music you like?

Your OPINIONS are not facts. Grow up, and learn the difference between music that’s good, music that’s bad, music you like, and music you don’t like.

Ontopic: Yes, since Cliff died, metallica has not put out music as rich as previously. Various factors. However, their music has been good throughout.

Revolutions Don't Last | 11/6/2006, 9:25 pm EST

The Black album wasn’t a bad idea in and of itself… artists can do great things when they leave their comfort zone. They moved to popish devices such as sub-5-minute songs and the like, but they made a ridiculous genre accessible to a lot of people, that certainly means something.

But after that they never stopped compromising… and they also stopped writing music altogether so they could get rich off tours. They did, and forgot how to relax and kick out a nasty song. Their self-image became their concern, and a focus group probably decided the look of each video and sound of each album.

They should break up, and if these guys want to write on their own, I wouldn’t mind listening. Except Hetfield… he is a pussy when sober.

Eric | 11/6/2006, 9:18 pm EST

Hey, they re-invented metal. I can’t expect any band to sustain 20 years of artistic growth. They made their contribution, and the early records will always influence kids to buy a guitar and start a band I rather listen to a substandard Metallica record (everthing after ..and Justice For All) any day over the Beatles, or any light weight over rated pretentious fluff like that Metallica much more relevant to me than that hippie crap from 40 years ago that people still gush over. If RS had any stones at all, it would declare how much the Beatles suck after Revolver, but God forbid we anger the baby boomers that haven’t bought their magazine since Jackson Browne had a record deal

You, sir, are a fucking asshole. Metallica have contributed their fair share to music… but saying the bealtes suck?

i never saw the beatles alientate half their fans, sell out, and start sucking.

idioteque | 11/6/2006, 9:16 pm EST

Metallica in the 80s = awesome.

Metallica in the 90s = mediocre.

Metallica in the 00s = the less said, the better. St. Anger holds the distinction of being the only album I’ve ever returned to the store. And the couple of new songs floating around on youtube are even worse.

poo | 11/6/2006, 9:10 pm EST

mikeky | 11/6/2006, 9:03 pm EST

metallica sounds a lot like rascal flatts nowadays.

Charlie Miller | 11/6/2006, 9:02 pm EST

I doubt there’s much question that Metallica did indeed once rock- my neck was literally sore when, as a 12 year old kid, I heard the black album for the first time, also my introduction to metal. I’ve never understood the hating on Black Album, though I suppose I can get it for Load and Reload.

Sadly, as much as I believe they rocked balls from the 80s til around Load, I truly believe they sold us out starting with Garage Inc… I personally view St. Anger as the single most disappointing album I’ve ever heard.

Oh well, I’m content with their good stuff.

Schultz | 11/6/2006, 8:46 pm EST

They started to suck at the time of the Black Album, forsaking all of what got them to that point including the fans. Fast forward to Monster - what kind of crap is that? We all have problems, but we don’t all have to make a DVD, pay tons of money on therapy and sell it to our fans - hell even Axl kept the majority of his therapy to himself.

Oh yeah, someone else mentioned this too, when a band sues fans for listening to their music, not only do they suck, but they swallow with relish!! I bought more discs due to Napster than I ever “stole”.

Opeth Rules Supreme ! | 11/6/2006, 8:42 pm EST

songsinthekeyofjawn | 11/6/2006, 8:39 pm EST

the fact that people hate on the progression (whether it be good or bad) of bands annoys me. i have been a dedicated metallica fan since i was 7 years old. my first cd was the black album. as far as suck factor i really don’t believe they have ever sucked. of course load, re-load, and st. anger were disappointing to many metallica fans including myself that is no reason to sell them down the river. every band goes through there respective changes and i’m sorry there isn’t anyone and i stress anyone that would turn down the money that these guys are making no matter if people call you a sell or what they still have more money than anyone on this comment board. and i know it shouldn’t be about the music but hell this is their job. would anyone like to work for less money at their job just to please a few people or work for millions and please millions of people.

all i believe is black sabbath invented metal and metallica perfected it (just my opinion). and being a true fan i of course will buy their new album especially since “the man” mr. rick rubin is behind board.

Plaster of Muppets | 11/6/2006, 8:28 pm EST

A sad case of nice guys taking themselves so seriously they never learn to stop recycling their own cliches. They can’t sing, can’t write songs, have no tunes, no riffs, no sense of rhythm, no humor, the drummer can’t play, the guitarist does little classical curlicues he copped from Ritchie Blackmore (yet is the most interesting thing in the sound anyway).

Lame.

Fuck the haters. Metallica don’t need to prove a damn thing to anyone….especially not a leftist “music” magazine like Rolling Stone.

Dude | 11/6/2006, 8:03 pm EST

I saw one of their videos on the screen at the Hard Rock Cafe. BIGGEST SELL OUTS EVER. I don’t remember the song title (it wasn’t very good) but it featured them playing on a giant cliff in the desert, Kirk running from a plane, and Lars jumping out of a skyscraper. Oh yeah, and humongous sunglasses.

Matt | 11/6/2006, 7:57 pm EST

I have to agree Metallica’s music has went down hill. I was one of the few that liked Load and Reload. St Anger wasn’t even a good rock record.

If a band lasts that long it’s a milestone these days. I think someone will come along and take their place.

Francisco-Argentina | 11/6/2006, 7:56 pm EST

tBone138 | 11/6/2006, 7:51 pm EST

The first three Metallica albums are classic metal milestones. They pioneered thrash with 1983’s “Kill ‘Em All”. “Ride the Lightning” and “Master of Puppets” are albums that today’s metal bands will cite as influence. However, the direction that the band has gone in recently is the wrong one. I can’t take any of that “Load / Re-Load” crap. Basically I’m against their work of the 90’s and today, because it doesn’t have the same edge as their earlier stuff. The Napster thing turned me off from the band.

The only album they put out that sucked was the black album in my opinion, Load and Reload were ok with some good highlights, St Anger had some brutal music but the lyrics were a little lacking… Dudes wrote Creaping Death… Creaping Death.

Since when Rolling Stone believes they have any clue about metal music.
I remind you this magazine gave head to “artists” like N Sync, Timberlake, Britney and the like.
How dare they think that what they are saying about metal is relevant at all !
And to Mrs Goodman, the article on this Ontario journal was just pathetic. These tired, old arguments about Metallica have gone on since 1984 and you seem to discover this in 2006.
Another proof that Rolling Stones “journalists ( a very loose term in deed !!!) doesn’t have a clue about metal only to inimaginable heights.

Dear Rolling Stone
Please do not talk about metal ever again and continue to enjoy your teeny bopper rockers ( Strokes, Doherty, White Stripes, My Chemical Romance)

Thank You in advance.

A Distraught Metal Fan

They suck because they don’t need to do what it is the propelled them global recognition. They might as well do infomercials selling mattresses or grills- it would be a steady check which in the end is all that matters when you begin seriously contemplating old age. Plenty of “new bands” re-creating what we all lived in the Metallica yesteryears that can still feed your metal souls.

Even the black album sucks. Pretend they died after justice and you will feel a lot better.

Metallica does indeed suck. But why? Did you see some kind of monster? That’s why. They blame their music between 1986 and 2002 on Jason newstead and their inability to cope with Cliff’s death.

However, I believe their suck is not because if Cliff’s death or Newstead’s bass playing. It’s because of their producer Bob Rock.

He came around to do the black album. Which sucks. It sucks hard actually. He made them sound like his other hair bands, except with kirk dropping the same wicked solos.

However, I like load and reload. But for some reason Bob Rock told them that St. Anger was a good album. They need a new producer and they need to stop whining. If they just sat around and stopped being dicks to each other, we may have another and justice for all.

they do suck … napster is our new god!

DT is right, Metallica hasn’t done anything purely substantial since the Black Album and it doesn’t look like that will change any time soon.

sucks.

metallica have not done anything good since the black album, and , ironicly, the album prior to that that has aged the least complimentary is Master of puppets. Yeah, they’re whores. anyone who doesn’t cancel a documentary when entering group therapy is pretty much a whore. oh, and even though newstead was no cliff burton, he should have been allowed to do side projects during down time from metallica, james and lars, you are chumps for that one, what if that had been cliff who wanted a little side action, huh?

idk, i remember watching Some Kind of Monster and being somewhat interested for not being a Metallica fan… my friends (being of metillica fandom and hatred alike) however held that its probably the funniest documentary ever… and that the band is a collection of tools.

i’ll say for myself that i didn’t think St. Anger was all that good, not god awful… but not any latter day masterpiece
