Lately we’ve been getting the feeling that we are in the throes of a Hair Metal Renaissance (henceforth to be known as HMR). Perhaps it was this past summer’s monumental Def Leppard tour, or the recent reunions of such HM Heavyweights as Poison and Cinderella. Could be the ubiquitous presence of former Skid Row frontman Sebastian Bach. The impending return of a certain former HM adherent. Or the fact that books like this are getting published. In any case, damned if we aren’t seeing a trend here. We know some of you out there never stopped loving your White Snake and Ratt records, but we know its not particularly stylish to admit it. So let’s all put aside our pride, emerge from our HM closets (which house our old spandex pants, liquid eyeliner and Aqua Net), and share a special list of the best HM bands of all time. Here we go (again).

Never understood the hype over G’N'R. I assume that everyone who likes them is casting a vote for Slash, which is something I’d definitely do. Without Slash GnR are a third rate Foghat/Thin Lizzy rip-off. It’s sad that a bad 70’s rip-off act is listed as #1 for the 80’s. The really good stuff was the Def Lep, Motley, Ratt type of metal. It may seem like cheeseball stuff to some today but at the time it appeared to be the most powerful and awesome stuff on the planet.I’ll admit the first albums I ever bought were Ozzy’s “Ultimate Sin” and Dokken’s “Under Lock and Key”. I may be more of a 90’s fan but I still break out the old stuff from time to time. The emerging new classic rock will be everything from 81-82 to about 97-98 (death of “alt-rock - rise of N’sync,Spears, Backstreet crap) and what was once “hair metal” will play a pretty big part in it.
worry about music not a look! | 11/27/2006, 7:34 pm EST
I wish I liked shitty music then I could relate.
Van Halen and GNR aren’t hair metal. Didn’t Slash get kicked out of poison for not wearing makeup?
cb | 11/20/2006, 6:44 pm EST
“You gotta throw the Stones in their as well. With Ronnie Wood and that hair coupled with Keiths wild hair? Some of their songs sound like Poison ripoffs too. ”
I have heard it all now..ARGHHH
Jr53 | 11/15/2006, 4:46 pm EST
Def leppard are NOT a hair band. Poison, warrant, motley crue are hair bands. Pyromania, high n dry, and even hysteria are better than a lot of that crap those other bands put out back then.
Leppard
Van Halen
Guns n Roses
should be left off of the “hair metal” list.
Chris | 11/13/2006, 6:33 pm EST
Def Leppard is THE Hair band and the greatest band of all time. BTW their first greatest hits album has been on the Billboard top 100 since it came out 11 years constantly crashing the top 20.
Def Leppard
Guns n roses
Poison/Motley Crue and after this I’m not sure
P.S. Does anyone see a pattern
with Def Leppard, GNR, and Motley Crue nearly always being mentioned, hmmmm I wonder.

Those of you who say Nirvana is the death of Hair Metal do not have a clue. GnR, Metallica and Pantera had more to do with the death of Hair Metal. They broke the mold of the time and turned the tide from the silliness of the hair band style.
Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath were not hair metal bands as some of you have labeled them. They created the genre of heavy metal and all forms of metal owe their roots to them.
All these bands flourished during the so called Grunge period. AIC and Soundgarden were metal bands. The only thing they have in common with Pearl Jam (which sucks) and Nirvana was they were from Seattle. Musically they could not have been any more different. (BTW, AIC broke big before Nirvana did and toured with Van-Halen.)
I would have to say my list of favorite hair metal bands are:
Motley Crue
Ratt
Twisted Sister
Dokken
KISS
And my guilty pleasure was The Damned Yankees.
Hacbarton | 11/6/2006, 1:43 pm EST
Who else thinks that LA Roses was the most underrated band of the hair era?
vemrion | 11/6/2006, 1:40 pm EST
Not-really-hair-metal bands that are still rocking:
Iron Maiden
Queensryche
Judas Priest
Wish I could say the same of:
Van Halen
Guns ‘n Roses
Skid Row
Blackie Lawless | 11/6/2006, 12:40 pm EST
you admit to liking Vain is baffling
theworldsforgottenboy | 11/6/2006, 12:31 pm EST
The best of these bands that got no coverage was Vain - for the voice and the catchy songs…. why Poison got so big and Vain is a footnote is baffling.
han solo | 11/6/2006, 12:08 pm EST
the L.A. GUNS performed some serious hair metal. Their album HOLLYWOOD VAMPIRES is really good (except for the embarassing name).
Metaldj | 11/6/2006, 11:52 am EST
Metallica was the best band in the 80’s, PERIOD! Then Bob Rock took over and they sold out. Everything after “And Justice For All” is crap, with “St. Anger” being the worst of all! Cliff Burton is rolling over in his grave!
Blackie Lawless | 11/6/2006, 11:41 am EST
W.A.S.P - We owned hair metal.
Metaldj | 11/6/2006, 11:40 am EST
The 80’s was all about musicianship, showmanship and fun! I sure do miss that. The 90’s were a joke… filled with depressing garbage, and today is nothing but hip hop crap with no creativity!
chazzeroni | 11/6/2006, 11:27 am EST
I’d like to point out that Whitesnake is in fact one word and not two. Oh, and Motley Crue’s the best hair band that ever lived. I’m not counting original Guns, since that’s probably the best American band of all time.

Steve | 11/6/2006, 12:47 am EST
Motley Crue is definitely the best, even though they are wrongly labeled a hair band.

Some of the music was great, but someone has to put an end to Mr. Skid Row. He’s whiny and reminds me of a stork. Please retire already Mr. “Bach”.
nurserock1 | 11/5/2006, 6:48 pm EST
I always thought it was funny that Classic Rock radio ignored the 80’s..everything went from 70’s Boston to skipping right into the 90’s with Pearl Jam as Classic Rock. Now it seems program directors are noting that there is an entire decade of good or “beloved” music that was forgotten and could easily be programmed into their stations…
mike | 11/5/2006, 5:46 pm EST
MUSIC TODAY SUCKS.
Popular music today is nothing but rap, that gets recycled over, and over again!!!!
James | 11/5/2006, 5:16 pm EST
C’mon folks, the music from the 80’s always rocked, you had a great time out at the shows, the clubs…things were about having a good time..watching the girls get crazy & hoping you were getting lucky with a car full on the weekends after a f**ked-up week @ school or work..& visa versa for the ladies chasing the dudes…you did’nt feel like putting a gun to your head …the way things are going these days, we could stand to get the next wave of feel good music……Go Vote & Start Making a Change….
Dorian Gray | 11/5/2006, 5:04 pm EST
I think the term “Hair band” means the band had focused and or made bigger a deal out of their hair more than creating good music people will listen to for generation after generation. In my humble opinion is for those who’s hair is worth paying attention to more than their music.
Kyle | 11/5/2006, 4:56 pm EST
GNR could be considered a hair band.
Check out the video for “Welcome to the Jungle.”
GNR is on one end of the spectrum, Poison is on another end, and the Crue is somewhere in between.
Loudei | 11/5/2006, 4:09 pm EST
what was good from the 80’s?
Van Halen, Metalica, Early Def Leppard, G n R, REM, U2, The Police, Public Enemy, The Cars, Red hot Chilli Peppers, Janes Addiction, Inxs… not everything was bad… Its just that the hair and spandex and this whole artless movement really sucked… like all the stuff now sucks… The Stones are the number touring band in the world, must be for a reason.
mike | 11/5/2006, 3:59 pm EST
people that bag Hair metal, what did they listen to that was so great? I’m sick of people making fun of it. The music world today sucks. There is no more music anymore. Just recycled rap music.
Loudei | 11/5/2006, 3:29 pm EST
I think Stryper are the all time greatest hair band…HAHAHAH no wait, Warrant because of the cherry pie chick…she was hot.
Sean | 11/5/2006, 2:31 pm EST
People hate to admit it but the 80’s was the best generation of music because of hair metal. Most of those bands still rock to and some better then ever. Not like today were you a band for a year or two then they go away. The 80’s bands are still rocking.
Examples:
Motley Crue (the best Hair Metal band of all time)
Metallica
Def Leppard
Aerosmith
Ozzy
Kiss
Van Halen
And the one major thing thats different between these bands and todays is that these bands put on a show not just a concert.

stop putting Guns N Roses in your lists of top hair metal bands…look at the list when you are done making it…does GNR have anything at all to do with glam queens like Motley Crue and Poison?!?!?! They couldnt sound/look more different…GNR are a legitmate rock band
tonkateddybear | 11/5/2006, 11:29 am EST
hair metal…. lame title. these were good bands. poison had 2 or 3 truly great songs, most being ballads, but still… they can bring in an audience. there were some really great bands that were overlooked because of the fashion trends. for example:
cinderella(GREAT bluesy rock…heartbreak station is an incredible album)
tesla(if zepplin came from the south, these guys would be their cousins)
skid row(slave to the grind was a MUCh better album than it should have been)
bon jovi(saw them eralier this year, and they still played to a full arena, and still put on a great show, and i don’t care for them the way my wife does…. damn you jon bon jovi and you’re good looks!)
g n’r (axl should have NEVER let izzy walk away…..)
and to me the best band from that era:
MOTLEY CRUE…
they still perform in top form. the music has lasted longer than the fashion trend, and just for sheer tenasity, they can still rock better than most new bands.
it’s just a shame that rolling stone won’t give any of those bands a chance to be current becasue they’d rather be all about the drivel that’s out today. most of the bands i mentioned above are still playing. thank the good lord for that! the world needs good rock music.
jungleland | 11/5/2006, 9:52 am EST
Saw Def Leppard last night. Has nothing to do with “hair” and everything to do with ROCK AND ROLL. These are the new classic rock bands
Bon Jovi
Def Leppard
Aerosmith
Kiss
Pois on
G&R
Skidd Row
They know how to fill an arena
Last night the crowd NEVER sat down for the 3 hour + show (Journey with there fantasic new singer Jeff Scott Soto played the 1st half)
Rizzo | 11/5/2006, 6:49 am EST
You gotta throw the Stones in their as well. With Ronnie Wood and that hair coupled with Keiths wild hair? Some of their songs sound like Poison ripoffs too.
R&R Downunder | 11/5/2006, 3:11 am EST
Stop lumping Van Halen in with “Hair Bands”!! Every hard rock band after them tried to emulate the great Diamond Dave…& failed!!
Long live the real Van Halen, kill ‘em next year!!

GNR

OK, Nirvana did not kill GNR. Axl shut out the world when they were at their peak. GNR is the Doc Gooden and Bjorn Borg of rock. Chinese Democracy is the “Next Big Thing”
Kyle Rogers | 11/4/2006, 9:15 pm EST
I purchased Appetite for Destruction when I was 12. Now I just turned 30 and I still love it. I play Guns N Roses songs on guitar and I can tell you that it is more Southern Rock, Classic Rock, and Blues related than the typical glam Metal AKA Hair Bands.
I think Poison killed hair metal. Remember that album that all four of them looked likes girls on the cover? That turned a lot of people away from Hair Metal.
Thunder God | 11/4/2006, 8:29 pm EST
Even though their peak belongs to the late 80’s and early 90’s…there’s no denying that since the record labels stopped supporting metal, no music genre is remembered and beloved more as the 80’s hair metal, glam metal, hard rock, thrash et all.
My favorites:
Van Halen
Def Leppard
Guns N’ Roses
Bon Jovi
Cinderella
Poison
Whit esnake
Warrant
White Lion
Mr. Big
Aerosmith
Kiss…of course!
Winger
Motley Crue
Ratt
Skid Row
…and the list could go on and on!
Dazzy B | 11/4/2006, 8:25 pm EST
Sea Hags are the only band I listen to deemed “hair metal”
Nothin' But A Good Time | 11/4/2006, 7:47 pm EST
I think it’s pointless to try to suss out who’s hair metal or not. “Hair Metal” is a slur like “Trailer Trash”. Someone could live in a trailer park and not act like trailer trash.
Quite frankly, I don’t want to see anyone from the 80’s reunite and try to come back. Because like Grace Slick said, “It’s depressing to see old people rock out to outdated songs.”
A quick list of 80’s bands that I have in my CD collection that I still like.
Def Leppard
Guns N’ Roses
Aerosmith (Permanent Vacation & Pump)
Cinderella
Great White
Poison
Tesla
Like ‘em or hate ‘em. It’s just rock and roll. Not brain surgery. It’s not suppose to be deep or meaningful. Sometimes it’s cool that it is.
The Gardener | 11/4/2006, 6:21 pm EST
i only listen to new stuff on WAAF but i have an extensive collection of disks. you remember Y&T? how about good ol boy uncle Ted Nugent the one who began hair bands along with Gene Simmons?
and let’s not forget Hannoi Rocks, & COC & whats the name of the guy who plays lead chainsaw.. i gotta go look 1 sec.. JACKYL! i saw them and PM5K at Lupo’s heartbreak Hotel in providence.
the rest of you can go su©k Eggs!

It always pisses me off when people overlook how heavy Skid Row got in the 90s. Slave to the Grind and Subhuman Race were outstanding albums, both way better than their debut album.

Loudei | 11/4/2006, 5:05 pm EST
I really think the music and the hair - not to mention the tight spandex was pretty damn bad. If you study the music you’ll learn that it was a bad mix of Eddie Van Halen guitar and Led Zeppelin. I think musically you have to give the crown to Van Halen - which really sucks because Van Halen its awesome - these bands really just “tryed” to copy the mighty Van Halen sound and looks… Guns n roses its classic aerosmith mixed with some punk and LA Glam… Hair metal its probably the saddest and more depressing form of music that record exec packaged up. Its just baby food… next year when the old Van Halen reunites for a massive tour you’ll see a little HMR going…
Nevertheless we need bad stuff for good stuff to come out… before the Beatles boom, rock n roll was like dead… with all those corny white singers singing the black stuff… after heair metal we had Nirvana and one of the great music decades…
AM STILL WAITING FOR THE NEXT BIG THING!!!
Steve | 11/4/2006, 4:34 pm EST
Hmmm…
Have to go with Poison for the visuals.
Musically, I think Bon Jovi was probably the best band of the era, and the fact that they’re still selling out arenas and stadiums two decades later backs me up.
I can’t consider Def Lep a “hair band”…their early stuff was heavier than most pop-metal, and even when they went pop, their hair didn’t really get all that huge. Same with Guns N’ Roses, easily my pick for best hard rock band of the 80’s…much more based in classic rock and blues than any of the other “hair bands.”
marion | 11/4/2006, 4:15 pm EST
hair or no hair

Best bands:

I tend to believe that GNR, not Nirvana, marked the end of the hair bands. Nirvana and GNR co-existed at the top of the music scene up until 1994 when Cobain left and AXL dissapeared for 7 or 8 years.
bodi | 11/4/2006, 10:37 am EST
Guns N’ Roses is not a hair band. Guns N’ Roses was the last great American rock band.

Hair bands of the 60’s & 70’s had the “going long-length” for that time period and was considered Long.like the Beatles. Looking back at their hair, it wasn’t long by today’s standards……but it
was cool & rebellious then.It all means Rock on !!!!
Rolling Stone Sucks | 11/4/2006, 3:44 am EST
The musical elitism going on here is ridiculous. This band sucks, your band sucks, this music sucks, Green Day is better, GROW UP and stop acting like you’re still in Junior High, my apologies to those here that still are. There is good music in almost every genre and yes, hair metal (even though I hate that term) is no exception. By the way, were it not for “hair metal” alot of today’s current bands would not exist. The empty dustbins at RS are wrong though, there is no hair metal rebirth nor can there ever be. It was very much of its time. The excess and hedonism of the 80’s inspired it, or maybe it was the other way around? Now that I’m done trying to sound like I know what I’m talking about, some of my favorite guilty pleasures from the 80’s that still get a spin now and then are (to name a few):
Dokken
Motley Crue
Y&T
Skid Row
Faster Pussycat
Black ‘N Blue
Helix
Armored Saint
WASP
and many more……

u know im a velvet underground fan, a pavement fan, and my fav album out right now is prob the new TV on the Radio
but there’s no way I’m too cool for Van Halen. I was playing the 1984 album today and how fucking amazing are they.
A week ago an RS news feed said they were getting back together with diamond dave, is this a hoax RS? I need follow ups!

I remember playing “Lack of Communication” (Ratt) for my cool skate punk friends back in the 80’s.They loved it! Then they found out it was Ratt and pretended they were just kidding..now THATS lame, and the sign of true poseurs. The scene just got too big, and labels went and signed any crap with hair. THAT did it in, not grunge. So many crap bands diluted the genre. But there are some true gems that still stand up- “Monkey Business” by Skid Row, “Out of the Cellar” by Ratt (they started to suck after that),”Cryin in the Rain” by Whitesnake (John Sykes guitar was nuts), Armoured Saint, “Can you Deliver”, Warrant, “Uncle Toms Cabin” “I Saw Red”. Good stuff, mind you all these bands did their fair share of shit too. I dont understand why this all has to be lumped together as crap.. Nirvana and the Chilies were great too.Its all about the passion, even some of the hairbands had it (occasionally).
BK | 11/4/2006, 1:18 am EST
The Who can’t be hair metal. Roger Daltrey was the only member who ever really had much hair.
pflo | 11/4/2006, 12:37 am EST
to the dork below who cant spell and says Green Day is better blah blah, listen to “Jesus of Suburbia” and then Motleys “On with the Show”, sound familiar?? Then once you’ve pulled your foot out of your mouth, listen to “Longview” and then Poisons “I Want Action”. I DARE YOU….. BTW, I like a lot of Green Day and hate Poison, but my point is DONT BE IGNORANT. Green Day is not true punk, they are hair metal refugees.
Ted | 11/4/2006, 12:20 am EST
The term Hair Bands is a statement almost making fun of the 80’s Heavy Metal scene. Sure some of the 80’s Metal bands were copy cats back then of other very talented bands, RATT, POISEN, MOTLEY CRUE ect Looking back to the 80’s, partying with buddies the hair bands we call today, didn’t seem so funny then. I love alot of the new bands today, Nickelback, Seether, Breaking Benjamin, Puddle of Mud ect… WHERE IS THE HAIR. They can perform but look just like the guy in your college biology class
vikesrule1111 | 11/4/2006, 12:07 am EST
stop bashing hair metal, it was good fun rock n’ roll, maybe lacking substance but rock n’ roll doesn’t always have to be socially or politically driven
its about the energy and these guys had the energy and fun loving nature rock is in dire need of today (only jet and wolfmother really have fun out there)

I get very annoyed when people praise grunge as the death of hair metal. While the original crop of Seattle bands range from excellent (Nirvana, Soundgarden) to competent (Pearl Jam), the maddeningly bland “alternative” groups of the late nineties (Goo Goo Dolls, Third Eye Blind) and 2000s wave of nu-metal bullshit are nothing to celebrate.
At least the hair metal bands had some decent guitar players and some charm. I may not like Bon Jovi, but I understand the appeal. Much better them at number 1 than fucking Nickelback.
tim | 11/3/2006, 11:49 pm EST
honestly there is no way guns n roses led zepplin the who or acdc are hair bands
there too good to be put in that catagory
JD | 11/3/2006, 11:48 pm EST
Poison is the definitive hair band, and don’t forget Cinderella or Slippery When Wet era Bon Jovi. I’m sure most of them were influenced by Kiss, a band that deserves to be in the Rock Hall of Fame. And yet they get snubbed year after year.
Steve | 11/3/2006, 11:36 pm EST
The only thing GNR has in common wiht hair bands is the fact that they released albums during the 80’s…thats it….they sound and look nothing like a hair band…
John | 11/3/2006, 11:35 pm EST
Nirvana always gets the credit for ending hair metal, which is such bullshit… Guns N Roses ended hair metal…when they came out everything changed… GNR were still the biggest band on earth when Kurt died…and continue to sell out arenas to this day…Their greatest hits album has been in the top 100 on billboard ever since it came out almost 3 years ago….
Chris | 11/3/2006, 11:32 pm EST
The Who and Led Zeppelin are not hair bands, dammit. Don’t be ignorant. Those two bands are way better than any of the hair bands of the 80’s, end of story. The only bands that can come close that are listed are G n R and Van Halen, and they aren’t even really hair bands. Neither is AC/DC for that matter.
Brayn | 11/3/2006, 11:29 pm EST
GNR isn’t a hair band they were the response against hair bands and ended up being the death of them, I’ll always respect them for that
adam | 11/3/2006, 11:01 pm EST
some people say g n r are a hair band if they are then they are the best but i do not really think that they are. as for the other band we cannot name a best because they are all a poor excuse for a rock and roll band
Jason | 11/3/2006, 10:14 pm EST
Some douche bag down there listed The Who as a hair metal band. THE WHO! Came out in the 1960s, ass fucker.

I was just a kid in the 80’s and a teen in the 90’s when gringe hit. My older brother and sisters used to listen to the hair bands. I find myself now listening to more 80’s rock than 90’s grunge. The only band I still listen to is Pearl Jam. The rest, I admit embarassingly, is all The Cult, Poison, Motley Crue, Judas Priest, Kiss, Cinderella, Skid Row, L.A. Guns, Dangerous Toys, Def Leppard, Lita Ford, White Snake and even Warrant. It’s in my iPod under kick ass 80’s rock!
