Raconteurs and White Stripes Share Custody of Jack, Mary J’s New Stuff, Disturbed’s Eternal Dissatisfaction

  • Jack White tells Uncut his songwriting energies are “divided totally 50/50 between the Raconteurs and the White Stripes” and claims that he and Meg have been working on songs during breaks from his tour with the Raconteurs. “I have so many songs now for another White Stripes record,” he teases.
  • Disturbed are appropriately happy that their cover of Genesis’ “Land of Confusion” reached the Number One spot on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart, but they also hoped for more. “I expected it to be better,” frontman David Draiman reportedly said. “I had hopes for it — multi-format, not simply at the active (rock) format.” What does he want, a lute-music-style classical hit? Not everyone can be Sting.
  • We love Mary J. Blige even now that she did that Gap ad, so we’re psyched to pick up a copy of what her label is calling a “hits package.” Reflections: The Journey, (the cheesiest title in the history of backward-looking Greatest Hits-appropriate metaphors?) will feature classic Mary J songs, plus some previously unreleased material and one new song, “We Ride.”
  • According to Billboard, the “hip-hop centric” Rock the Bells holiday season festival is expanding into a month-long club tour at the end of this year. The tour will featureRedman, Raekwon, Keith Murray, Supernatural and DJ Kool.

Jack has the pipes and is a brilliant song writer. He can get amazing sounds out his guitar. Everyone is intitled to their opinion. I think he’s brilliant and I hope he is smart enough to survive and rock into his old age. He seems pretty versatile and respected by his peers as well… and that crosses the age gap… he produced a recent Lorreta Lynn albumn for example…

Jack White is cool. I googled to see if The White Stripes were emo and it led me here. It looks like Rolling Stone is forever consistent as always.

I cannot wait to see Rock The Bells in every city the tour stops. About ten of us already situated a RV to follow the tour around. Is it 11/21/06 yet????

Jack White is a genius. I’ve seen both bands several times now, and while the White Stripes still reign supreme in my heart, the Raconteurs are also wondrous to behold. Much of the thrill is due to Jack White’s nuclear charisma and stunning musicianship; but that’s not all it is. In both bands it’s his bandmates that provide the synergistic dynamics - both musical and interpersonal - that enable such phenomenal performances to happen. Without Meg there would be no White Stripes, and without Brendan, Patrick and Little Jack, there would be no Raconteurs.

I was resistant to the idea of the Raconteurs at first, fearing that it might spell the end of the Stripes; but Jack has said many times now that it won’t, so maybe we can just relax about that. It’s great that the two bands are so different, that reveals the diversity of Jack’s immense talents. There’s nothing else out there to compare with Jack and Meg; but now I’m thinking there’s nothing out there that quite compares with the Raconteurs, either.

They are a very talented bunch of guys; I loved their album and their live shows are a blast. And somehow, against all my expectations, the Raconteurs have also succeeded in becoming more than just a band; they seem to be making magic, tapping into something primal and mythic and archetypal. The spirit of the music is a powerful emotive force that ultimately transcends the music. It’s just a very different flavor of the magic and mythos than the White Stripes.

(But, heck - why stop at two terrific bands? Why not three? OK, just wishful thinking…)

Jack White is one of the greatest musicians and songwriters of this generation. There’s more than enough room for both bands.

Those who wish death upon Jack have problems. How is he a poser, anyway? If memory serves I believe the Stripes were at the forefront of the sound everyone is now copying.

I never thought for a second that the White Stripes were over. Every credible musician looks for different forms of expression. Not to mention that every music news outlet in the world reported ad nauseum “Will the White Stripes break up? Jack White says no!” over and over again.

Dr. Monkey | 11/2/2006, 11:55 am EST

Look at that exclusive rider.

jungleland | 11/2/2006, 11:54 am EST

I was sure the Raconteurs meant the end of the White Stripes…I’m glad I was wrong!

PS - The Who’s Endless Wire is growing on me

John | 11/2/2006, 11:13 am EST

I really like both bands, but I gotta say that I think the White Stripes are far better. Hopefully we get another White Stripes album on the level of Get Behind Me Satan with Jack’s mind on other things this time around.
