CMJ Madness: Mute Math Loves Jesus But Isn’t Terrible

11/2/06, 5:38 pm EST

We should probably mention right off the bat that New Orleans foursome Mute Math is kinda sorta a Christian rock band. Despite this, they a) sound nothing like Creed and b) never flat-out name-check Jesus. In fact, the group actually sued their label when they were marketed as Christian rockers, fearing it would limit their fan base. So we’re giving ourselves permission to like them. And apparently so are the scores of folks who showed up for their gig at B.B. Kings’ Blues Club last night. For almost two hours, the quartet brought the house down with their emo-meets-Radiohead brand of atmospheric rock, ripping through tunes from their debut album. Frontman Paul Meany (who plays keyboards and a keytar) hopped around stage like a chimpanzee on a sugar high, and drummer Darren King taped his monitor headphones around his head to allow for maximum rocking out. And unlike most every other CMJ act, these guys supplemented their songs with a killer light show: Rows of fluorescent tubes were illuminated behind them, lending them a downright ethereal glow. Praise the Lord, we guess.

Nice. Giving props grudgingly! Haha. I don’t care where they stand on their religious views. They’re absolutely amazing.

Bob Dylan. U2. Johnny Cash. BRMC. Joseph Arthur. Moby. Sufjan Stevens, etc.

Each of these artists have songs about their faith in some form or another. I think it’s refreshing.

Along with these bands/artists, MuteMath is turning out some of the best music available. Is there a connection between faith and art? (yes, I know Creed happened. There’s exceptions with everything, isn’t there?)

I should add that I have a lot of respect for R.S. being able to recognize a great band when it sees one. : ) I can’t wait for an album review.

oh man i cant stand creed .. ugh

Roger on the MuteMath. Their show is full of solid musicianship, creative lyricism with a spiritual recognition, and they still pack an energetic punch…a rare combo these days with a radio stuffed with over-produced, image-based, no-talent, flavors of the month.

Don’t be a coward–Jesus is a right purpose of art…

Kevin'signorant | 7/20/2007, 1:42 am EST

Even if they did mention Jesus they still kick butt. But your so ignorant that you think if they do mention him you can’t listen to them.

I’m not saying that there is a bunch of good christian music, but if you would actually study some things in music, you would know that there are tons of bands that are christians that are amazing. U2. Yeah buddy.

Your ignorance makes me mad.

Love love the Mute Math album Reset, sad it only has 7 tracks but their music rocks my soul!

Jonny | 10/3/2007, 9:56 am EST

Best band to come along in years… Bar none. The fact that they have beliefs and some sort of moral conviction should be a good thing, not a bad thing as so many people see it these days. Like someone said above… Your ignorance makes me mad.

sliym | 10/25/2007, 12:47 pm EST

“So we’re giving ourselves permission to like them.” so if they talked about Jesus you wouldnt like them despite of their awesome music? c’mon man, regardless of their belief,we should respect the art. they are better than most bands in the radio today.

Alex | 10/31/2007, 6:06 pm EST

Mute Math is one of the Best bands to make music in the last 30 years… Christian music satanic music or Whatever kind of music they are going to get Labeled, They make amazing music and they will be recognized for it for some time to come… Keep Makin those beats Mute Math…

It’s surprising that RS would be so obtuse as to admit filtering music through any lens other than ‘quality’

anonymous | 7/6/2008, 9:01 pm EST

I think the way this article was worded is exactly the kind of thing Mute Math was trying to avoid with that lawsuit. The sentiment is kinda like, “OK, they’re Christians, but we can like them anyway, i guess…”
Honestly, no one finds music in the “Anti-Bush” section at a record store, or that this particular group is Jehovah’s Witness or Muslim or w/e. You don’t classify music by the beliefs of the members. Yet, pigeon-holing “Christian bands” has caught on, simply cause labels are afraid of somehow “shoving Jesus down people’s throats.” I sure don’t feel that way when I listen to MM. Like sliym said, respect it for the art.

bro, i have to say that if it weren’t for the church and Christians, music wouldn’t be here today. There were centuries where all that existed musically was that which came out of Christianity, so whether you agree with the views of Christians or not, you can’t bash a religion that held this artform together for so long. And yes, I do agree with the expressed feelings about Creed…but I wouldn’t remotely put them in the same catagory as MM… ever!

debcat | 11/18/2008, 12:04 pm EST

Although earned, its terrible how christian music has been put under the umbrella of watered down versions of ’secular’ music. The christian label has sadly put a hold on good musicians who are christians. Why can’t we just plainly see good music for itself and bad music for itself. Why do we have to be afraid to like the music that we like?

Anonymous | 4/6/2009, 11:08 pm EST

I don’t think it could have been said better debcat

Mutemath didn’t aim for the Christian market. They admit that they themselves are in fact Christians, and some of their songs can be taken into a Christian perspective (like the third track to their album Reset). However, their focus is on the mainstream. Nothing should stop people from enjoying this group.

me! | 8/18/2009, 6:36 pm EST

“loves jesus, but isnt terrible”??? as if those who love jesus automatically make crappy music? come on, dude. and christians are supposed to be the ones who judge others? i mean there is some crappy music in christian genres, but theres crappy music everywhere (especially the radio nowadays) and beliefs have nothing to do with how good or bad your music is.

RE: We should probably mention right off the bat that New Orleans foursome Mute Math is kinda sorta a Christian rock band. Despite this

Guess you never heard of P.O.D., The Fray, Paramore, Mat Kearney, RelientK, As I Lay Dying, Underoath, Amberlin, Emery
