Exclusive Audio: We Remember to Eat, Courtney Love Joins Us

10/31/06, 12:44 pm EST

courtney loveCourtney Love came by our offices yesterday for lunch on a break from promoting her new book, Dirty Blonde: The Diaries of Courtney Love. Love is officially clean and sober: She looks healthy, sounds healthy and eats healthy (”no carbs, please”) but she’s still the same riotous, outspoken, attention-seeking, feminist punk-rock scholar she used to be before Mel Gibson helped her get off the stuff once and for all. We asked Courtney to tell us a little bit about the last few years of her life. She told us she thought Court TV covered it all pretty well. We laughed, then we let her talk and now we’re gonna let you hear what she said.

  • Courtney on what music she’s been listening to of late and what new bands she knows she’s supposed to like. Listen here.
  • Courtney on her future tours, and her visit to AA with a certain other famously, gloriously messy rock chick. Listen here.
  • Courtney on downloading and Bono. Listen here.
  • Courtney clears the air re: her sale of a portion of Nirvana’s publishing, and her standing with Krist and Dave. Listen here.

After our long chat, we succeeded in coaxing Courtney into playing us an impromptu version of one of her new songs. She shot the rest of a Diet Coke and pulled out a plain acoustic guitar to play a raspy, absurdly awesome version of a new track, “Never Go Hungry Again.” This proud confessional combines simple folk-rock soundcraft with the gutteral scream and lyrical fire of a never-to-be-retired riot grrrl. “It’s time for me to take a stand, it’s time for me to be a man,” Courtney screeched, her voice serrated and raw. It’s 1994 all over again. Damn.

More or less nothing seems important. I’ve just been letting everything happen without me recently. I can’t be bothered with anything recently, but such is life. My life’s been generally bland today. Not much on my mind these days, but eh.

I so can’t wait ’til this comes out. I hope she gets it big all over again and writes songs as good as the ones on Live Through This.

Kirstie | 4/18/2007, 2:32 pm EST

Society does not respect this woman nor give her any credit. She has been through, literally, an arduous hell. I believe we can expect great things from her here in 2007.

Spike | 1/17/2007, 8:59 pm EST

Courtney ain’t no Dylan as far as lyrics go.

Then again, lots of people loathe Dylan’s phrasing, nasal voice and tangents…all stuff I’ve heard about Love.

I always liked her music. You just have to take it at face value.

As for the shiite that she supposedly murdered Cobain - well, I liked him too, but he was doing a damn good enough job of self destructing on his own. The “evidence” that supposedly points to her involvement is incredibly unsound.

TJ | 1/16/2007, 10:24 pm EST

ok the way i look at it is that lets hope she stays clean so she doesn’t act like an ass and so she can make good music like “doll parts”. Also if you look at the way she got all messed up over the SUICIDE of Kurt *big fan of his* I don’t think she could have mentally dealt with the guilt and emotion involved with killing him and keeping it secret, she would have been her own downfall. I hear the new album is awesome I hope so!

iHATECOURTNEYLOVE | 1/4/2007, 6:26 pm EST

Courtney Love sucks freaking balls!SHE KILLED KURT COBAIN!All of you Courtney Lovers need to get a freaking life because your idol is a MURDER!She killed a great man and many others,a few of her friends might I add.
SCREW YOU COURTNEY LOVE!
I love all you Courtney Love haters!

wilikurt | 11/14/2006, 5:36 pm EST

I dont know,if it is important.I dont care if she is clean and sober,or not,i am only intrested in a way she writes her songs, plays the guitar and sings. She is intersting and one of the cleanest people in the world in the spiritual way….Bad skin, doll heart

tracie | 11/6/2006, 10:11 am EST

I never cared much for her voice but her lyrics and emotion was appealling. I like her kick ass attitude. Yes, she wants to be a star but at least she’ll do whatever she can to entertain us and sometimes make a fool of herself and amuse us. But she gets up and keeps going. She does shit many of us dream about. Hello she interrupted a Madonna interveiw! Now which one of you have the balls to do that?

BadAssDarkling | 11/5/2006, 3:17 pm EST

Anonymous, I like what you had to say! I hope Courtney stays strong and shows them all that she still has solid rock music left in her. As Garbage’s Shirley Manson sings on their Bleed Like Me album:

“Don’t care what they have to say./Why you listening to them anyway?/Why do you have to give them what they want?/They love to watch you as you fall apart./Stick it to them like a phoenix rise./There’s nothing grander than a big surprise./They can’t hurt you with their sticks and stones./About time./Take them right between the eyes.”

I feel this song was largely inspired by Courtney. So, go, Courtney. Take them right between the eyes!

there will always be haters… what possesses them to go on the internet and bad mouth people and spend the time doing that… well that’s beyond me, i’m not sure what they get out of it. seems like there should be more important things for them to do. get off yer ass. write your mom a letter. and do something with your day. haha. me? i’m busy busy busy. off like a prom dress.

be_a_man | 11/3/2006, 2:08 pm EST

Ha she always cracks me up and I think she’s always had a good sense of humour. And the voice has always been there too, it’s nothing new. Anyway, Great heraing the interview and I look forward to getting the book in the mail soon and also her new record in Feb! NICE!

morning dew | 11/2/2006, 9:52 pm EST

whoa.. her fake “over Affected’ LONG ISLAND socialite accent, nasal voice is WAAAAAYYY to o muc. HSe in’t funny, she’s phoney.. ALso there may have been some bad acis around, who knows? but if there was the DEAD familyproprer wasn’t having any of that, thank youyvery musch. What a complete ass she is.. SUZEEBEE@HOTMAIL.COM | 11/2/2006, 1:42 pm EST

I, for one, can’t to hear what she says on her new cd! I love Love! Love her or not, she always says what I would want to say. If only I could write like her. ROC ON COURTNEY!!!

madddzzzz | 11/2/2006, 12:17 am EST

who cares what shit shes done, shes courtney, shes a rockstar, shes fucking allowed to do whatever she wants. Shes more rock than anyone to walk this planet.

Kris | 11/1/2006, 10:29 pm EST

It’s weird how when Courtney went off the map, girls on rock radio did too. I would love to hear her back on the air (and all the marketing aftermath..remember Veruca Salt?) because all these modern rock boys are boring me to death.

www.heatherjeane.com | 11/1/2006, 9:08 pm EST

Yeah, last time I saw her a real estate agent from Mt Gambier way had arranged for her to drive by me in Mitcham. She looked larger than life, scary as hell. I hope she went and visited Nirvana Organic Fruit shop in Heathfield, just to see where the name of the band came from. Well, she really did look big. So did Amy Grant, but not THAT BIG. Ellen degenerate looked nice and small and Oh so ghostly white too. Princess Caroline’s new German husband, when he drove down Cross Road, he looked small too. Red ruddy face, big black car. What was he doing here I wonder?
Buy the above book! PS. Who is Heather Jeane you could ask? [1] she lived in Leeds when the london transport bombs went off [2] says her daughter “LUCY” lives in Spain when the Spain bombs went off in 2004. Lived in the Mt Gambier region. Surname was Green and so she thinks they started the Greens part for her. Now she thinks she’s the wife of the guy who wrote the book of Mormon. Did she ever take drugs I wonder?
U kid me?

Dragon girl | 11/1/2006, 6:27 pm EST

Courtney is revolution. Anyone who feels the need to write negatively about her is obviously a looser and has never taken any drugs to understand what she might have been going through. You nerds out there keep your negative comments to yourself and go write about fucking britney spears or something! You have no idea!

SATAN | 11/1/2006, 11:52 am EST

Her lips hang low.

cortney love suxz u guys need a life

Angie | 11/1/2006, 10:32 am EST

Courtney`s new book costs 35 dollars. I`m going to wait till spring to buy it when it`s in the bargain bins for 12 to 15 dollars.

Kelly | 11/1/2006, 9:41 am EST

Let the hype begin. Courtney is the new Bob Dylan. Moby and Linda Perry said so. Now let`s see how many people fall for it.

OK | 11/1/2006, 8:54 am EST

In response to your comments Chris about album sales. The reason artists get coverage in music magazines is because the goal in is to write about and promote music that is “good”, or at least music that music journalists think is good, popularity should come second. Also, just because you can’t sell albums doesn’t mean you can’t sell magazines, people love to read about celebrities especially ones that they hate!

Chris | 11/1/2006, 12:30 am EST

I`m still amazed at how much media coverage courtney gets considering the fact her last CD, the ironically titled America`s Sweetheart, sold only 86,000 copies according to Nielsen soundscan. The exact same people will buy her new CD, give or take a thousand, and that won`t be enough to make it a hit. She`s not attracting any new, younger audience.

awful | 11/1/2006, 12:22 am EST

Fuck yea, courtney is awesome I cant wait for this new album

kevin | 10/31/2006, 10:06 pm EST

She’s a revolutionary. Period.

Wow - lot of love here for Courtster. Good for all of you. Guess what - She’s an idiot.

JimVan Matre | 10/31/2006, 6:43 pm EST

Courtney is the most brilliant woman of our generation.

warhand | 10/31/2006, 6:04 pm EST

Poor Kurt, even feel worse for Frances….being such a huge Nirvana / Kurt fan, While listening to those exerpts from that interview left me with an overwhelming feeling of emptiness, heartache and nausea. Almost realizing that someone else is in charge of the song catalogue my youth owns a piece of, someone who I don’t trust is in control of the soundtrack of my youth. I’m fuckin horrified…..I hope Dave and Chris buy it and the money goes to Frances.

bucky | 10/31/2006, 5:06 pm EST

courtney is a talentless opportunist. this whole clean-and-sober “rebirth” with a new album and tell-all book is just another in a long line of calculated career moves. as if we really give a fuck… please.

tori | 10/31/2006, 4:29 pm EST

yayyy!!! thanks so much for posting this

she’s gonna tour! the record’s out in February! she’s fuckin sober!

HipsterScienceAlgebraEquations | 10/31/2006, 2:21 pm EST

Courtney Love…awww. Her and Whitney need to do an album together.I bet u it would be so good.

BOB-O | 10/31/2006, 2:09 pm EST

don’t you ever, EVER compare Courtney Love to Bob Dylan again…especially since fucking Moby is the one to make that comparison first….egh, Moby

Brain | 10/31/2006, 2:06 pm EST

She’ll be back on the sauce in no time, just so we won’t forget about her. Can’t wait to hear the new tunes.

rustyshackleford | 10/31/2006, 2:05 pm EST

I, for one, am really glad to hear Courtney is sober and making decent music again. Despite all of her troubles, I’ve always liked her. Hopefully she can stay sober this time.

DonkeyTron | 10/31/2006, 1:45 pm EST

Yeah, well nicotine doesn’t make you act like a complete ass on someone else’s roast show either.

Aaron D. | 10/31/2006, 1:35 pm EST

Courtney’s got her flaws, but she’s real, and her sincerity comes through in her music. How can one not listen to “Doll Parts” without a few goosebumps?

Teddy Hornthrop | 10/31/2006, 1:08 pm EST

Did anyone read the article on CNN yesterday where Linda Perry said Courtney’s lyrics belonged in the same pantheon as Bob Dylan’s?

Jeff | 10/31/2006, 1:06 pm EST

Anybody who smokes 4 packs of cigarettes a day is NOT sober.

Nicotine = worst drug of them all
