Weekend Rock List: Songs About Superheroes

10/27/06, 5:49 pm EST

There are two kinds of people in this world: Those who buy those dull American flag stamps, and those who go for Elvis’ face or the orchid-honoring collection or, like, the Wizard of Oz characters. For those who require a little personality with their postage, check out these badass Marvel Comics stamps, which feature everyone from The Incredible Hulk to Wolverine to Spiderman and Captain America.

In honor of these Superhero greats being memorialized on electric bills countrywide, we thought we’d pull together a Songs About Superheroes list for the weekend. Here’s what we came up with so far. What superhero-related tracks do it for you?

  • “Sunshine Superman,” Donovan (extra points for the Green Lantern lyrical reference)
  • “Superman,” R.E.M.
  • “Batman Theme,” The Jam
  • “The Spiderman Theme,” The Ramones
  • “Captain America” – Styx

I thought the song by Styx was simply called “America,” maybe even subtitled “Madame Blue,” not “Captain America.” Also, if you listen to the lyrics, it’s about the state of America when the song was written, not some superhero in red, white and blue tights.

Could’a sworn that’s what the song was about, anyway…
