Moby’s Secret to Balding, Queen Back in the Studio, Indie Rock Misses Tower Records

10/26/06, 1:29 pm EST

  • This is what Moby might have looked like had he not gone to so many raves in his twenties. The rocker (or whatever) claims that raving too hard resulted in the premature hair loss he experienced later. “I believe that those early experiences contributed to me losing my hair,” the reformed raver said of his days as a DJ in the early ’90s. “It was a really fun period, but incredibly stressful.”
  • According to a post on Brian May’s Web site, Queen have begun recording new material with Paul Rodgers and from the sound of it, they’re geeking out in the studio. May writes: “This is our first QUEEN new recording session for about 15 years. It may turn into an album . . . it may lead elsewhere, but right now we are HAVING FUN! And . . . it sounds pretty amazing to my ears . . . very different from anything Paul or Queen have ever done. And pretty epic!!” [via The Rock Radio]
  • Jay-Z denies that his return to the stage means he’s abandoning his post as Def Jam president. “I know there’s been some rumors I was leaving Def Jam,” the rapper reportedly said, adding, “I’m not leaving Def Jam. I signed on for three years, so I don’t have any plans to move on.” Like we can trust you after that phony retirement fiasco, Hova.
  • Jermaine Dupri allegedly wrote this post on his MySpace page, in which he says that his departure from Virgin was due to the label’s “lack of participation and promotion on 20yo.”
  • Now that Madonna has Ricky Martin in her corner, all will be okay with her adoption drama. Martin also reportedly claims he has a “very beautiful connection” with the Indian children he sponsors.
  • The trickle down of pain resulting from Tower Record’s demise has begun. Indie bands on indie labels (and therefore the labels themselves) are concerned about how Tower’s closing will affect their distribution and sales stats.

I wonder if the “stress” of raving that Moby was talking about was the toll of staying up late for work all the time, or the physical effects of rolling every night. He doesn’t strike me as an X kind of guy. Then again, I know nothing about him. Haha — he’s bald!

Promotion would not have saved “20yo”. You can’t convince people to buy something they don’t want. And, you can’t polish a turd.

Janet Jackson hasn’t been relevant, or even interesting, since the Velvet Rope. The reason this album and its predecessor didn’t go anywhere is because they didn not contain good music.

It’s really very simple.

Nobody can replace Freddie Mercury. Brain May must be really desperate or he is losing his mind. If your going to make music with Rodgers just call the band something else. Don’t call it Queen.

I agree. Don’t call it Queen. And don’t call it Sabbath without Ozzie. Don’t ever call it the Beatles, and the Doors are closed.

FYI…they’re not calling it sabbath….they’re calling it Heaven and Hell….can anyone say GAY.

I think that’s what the Moby song “Extreme Ways” was about, though judging by his general dorkiness I have trouble picturing him ever having partied too hard.

First U2 is selling out to Apple Computer co. Now The Edge, is selling The Ford Edge. They don’t call it “Queen” Brian May calls it “Queen with Paul Rogers”. Queen f/ Paul R. was on VH1 promoting a live album. As long as they call Pink Floyd, anything other then Red Floyd or Megenta Floyd I’m happy! But Roger Waters has gone insane like Tom Cruise. Only more “Money” can cure him!

This collaboration seems bent on uniting the best and worst of late 70s AOR. Replacing one of the most dynamic and exciting vocalists of all time with the ultra-wooden Paul Rodgers spells disaster.

IS being a celebrity and being trashed all the time all that fun? Money is one thing but being under the microscope 24/7…. that is another.. enjoy the day :-)
