Playlist of the Day: Kurt Routes Elvis in Rock & Roll Heaven

10/25/06, 8:42 am EST

As members of the so-called Generation Y, we felt a certain triumphant glee in reading that Kurt Cobain has surpassed Elvis Presley as the top-grossing dead rock star. Not that we don’t worship the King (after all, he’s the King for God’s sake), but it’s cool to think that the dude who sang “I’m so horny/But that’s okay/My will is good” still speaks to the masses. To mark this cultural shift, we’re gonna go ahead and put together a little list like we do. Ladies and gentleman, we give you the “Kurt Makes More Money Than Elvis” playlist. Please contribute as you see fit.

  • “It’s Good To Be King,” Tom Petty
  • “Milk It,” Nirvana
  • “Keep On Rockin’,” Shonen Knife
  • “Pennies From Heaven,” Bing Crosby
  • “King Is Dead,” Nazareth

Anonymous | 10/25/2006, 4:10 pm EST

After all of the Beatles have passed away, im sure that they will then become the highest grossing artist. They may mot be the king but they are the greatest. They started an invasion that still exists to this day (Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Clash, Radiohead, Coldplay) and the list goes on..

Hey, guess what? Elvis hasn’t had one good song released that hasn’t sounded like 20 other artists. Kurt was original. I may not be head over heals with Nirvana, but I say you should take a moment to read up on Kurt as a person before you bash him. Apparently he was one of the best guys you could meet. As for ideas for the playlist,
Californication- Red Hot
Dani California- Red Hot
Money- Pink Floyd
The Man who Sold The World- Nirvana, unplugged

Does that mean we should admire a man who got morbidly obesese, got addicted to pain killers and spent the golden years on his life as a lounge singer in Vegas? Hell, I admire Cobain just for never falling to that level.

This magazine sucks, but i guess i’ll comment anyways. Kurt Cobain was a whiny little baby who’s music always sounded the same with repitive acoustic licks, and his lyrics weren’t even that good. You want a talented guitarist with great lyrics?….try Clapton or Dylan.Who cares about Elvis as a person?… His music, guitar skills and influence is much more genuine anyways. Money means nothing nowadays…listen to the crap they put out. I am 20, and saddend that Cobain overtaking the man who MADE rock and roll would excite you all.

Barret | 10/26/2006, 3:53 pm EST

The fact that Cobain was a heroin addict and that he killed himself are two of the least important facts one could spew about the guy. And you morons who revile him and Nirvana because they didn’t have superior ‘chops?’ Keep being morons, you don’t get it and you never will. Eddie Van Halen is an amazing guitar player in the technical sense, but he has the soul of a fucking drone. Chops don’t mean shit, and anybody with a half-assed sense of music knows that.

Scene_Red | 10/26/2006, 7:39 pm EST

I’m sure that wherever Kurt is now (may he rest in peace), he is sickened by the fact that he is being celebrated as the richest or most popular or whatever the fuck he’s being labeled. The mere acknowledgement of this is very disrespectful to Kurt and what he stood for (and against.)

P.S. Fuck Elvis in his fat, pill-popping ass. Long Live Chuck Berry – The TRUE King Of Rock ‘n Roll!

Kurt was and will always be the biggest baby he didn’t get what he wanted so to attract attention he commits suicide it’s totally insane

Joy | 10/27/2006, 1:01 pm EST

Why are people trashing Kurt Cobain? That’s not right. The poor guy had some issues, but he still made awesome music.

ynvnxvl | 10/27/2006, 1:25 pm EST

Kurt Cobain was indeed a troubled man, but I do admire him for his mentality. First off he was anti-racist, anti-sexist, anti-homophobe – anti-discrimination.
He had an influential voice that moved the masses so much, to levels he himself didn’t expect.
He was a reluctant leader, and I guess the weight on his shoulders is something we could never experience.
No doubt that Elvis had talent. But Kurt, well, he had insight and rage. He was troubled but that only made him stronger and better as a musician, as a writer, and as an icon.
Those who think Kurt is untalented probably don’t have enough intellect to understand him or his lyrics.
“I find it hard, it’s hard to find,
Oh well, whatever, nevermind.” – Kurt Cobain.

MrKramer | 10/27/2006, 2:36 pm EST

Elvis could sing and play. But I don’t even no if he wrote his own songs. What I do know is that he made his career covering songs. OF the dozen better Elvis songs how many did he write? Kurt could sing and play, but most importantly he could write his own material, making his genuis more significant.
Lobsters’s your an idiot, i can’t stand hippies, but I LOVE THE BEATLES. John had more talent than his idol the “king.” At least Lennon and Cobain tried to make the world a better place, instead of getting fatter, wtf dies on the toilet. John and Kurt did the best they could to get over their problems. And by the way ZZ Top and Boston are better than the king’s fat ass will ever be.
Kurt’s only cause of some royalties, what about the king’s family selling his soul to any company will through some cash their way. Shit Yoko’s been more graceful in how she handle’s a true genius’ legacy.
There are better candidates for King of Rock than elvis. Bo, Chuck, Richard, all of which can write and breath.
Songs:
Sell Out
Baby, You’re a Rich Man
I Don’t Live Today
My Generation

Nimrod | 10/27/2006, 3:32 pm EST

Elvis will be number one next year,The only reason he is on top is that Coutney Love sold 25% of his product rights. He just hasn’t done enough to keep it up for any length of time.

old dude | 10/27/2006, 3:38 pm EST

Cobain routs Elvis I think you meant. I also a little bit like Yoda sound.

Detroitmuscle | 10/27/2006, 4:26 pm EST

Hey Lobsters, congratulations, you’re a a white trash, racist, douchebag. Nirvana was more influential, refreshing, exciting, talented, and important than any artist since Cobain’s unfortunate demise. Wake up dummy!

catt | 10/27/2006, 6:21 pm EST

I can’t believe the Elvis bashing. He might not have had the ability to write his own songs but he could sing the shit out of any song he chose. He was a true performer and I have never heard another voice that sounds better live than recorded. Without him there would have been no Beatles, Stones, etc. and therefore, no Kurt Cobain.

Eric Turnbow | 10/27/2006, 6:51 pm EST

I think there is NO COMPARISON Beetween Elvis and Corbain. While I do admire the songwriting of Kurt, the Elvis catalog is extensive and alot easier on the ears. Lets call it pleasant. Nobody plays the guitar like James Burton, and Elvis had a live show that does not slow down, including some of the most acomplished musicians in the world like Ronny Tut and Jerry Sheff. I like both performers alot, but Elvis Presley is in a completly different leage, in my opinion. Just compare the catalogs! There is no comparison. Not to mention Elvis had a far superior voice! No one can touch him. Certainly not Corbain. Corbains pronouciation leaves much to the imagination as well. Curt sounds like he has a handfull of marbles in his mouth. With Elvis, He enunciates and you can understand every word. Besides sales is not what makes a legacy! If that were true we aould be talking about “In Synch’ and the “Bay City Rollers”. Give me a break. Elvis over Curt for sure.

Joy | 10/29/2006, 3:54 pm EST

If you want to judge how great a musician is by how pleasant their music is, you’d have to put people like Captain and Tenille and Air Supply at the top of the list. Some of the best music, like Nine Inch Nails and Rage Against the Machine, is extremely unpleasant. Just because Kurt wasn’t as melodic as Elvis or didn’t anunciate as well doesn’t mean that Elvis is better.

First of all, it was Elvis who created Rock and Roll, and if it wasn’t for him, singers and bands wouldn’t be here today. I love Elvis, his music, his voice. He had talent. His legacy grows stronger day after day.He will always be The King.Have a heart.
