Thom Yorke’s Favorite Radiohead Song, Manicurists’ Vindication Against Foxy Brown, Brian May’s New Book

10/24/06, 2:40 pm EST

  • Thom Yorke reportedly says that Kid A’s “How to Disappear Completely” is his favorite Radiohead song. “It’s the most beautiful thing we ever did, I think,” Yorke apparently said. Hmmm, we’d have to go with “Lucky.” What’s your favorite Radiohead track?
  • Tower Records might not be totally dead, yet. Or something. This is starting to be confusing/tedious.
  • Foxy Brown, a.k.a. the woman who beats people up over manicure/pedicure disputes, has been sentenced to three years probation for assault.
  • Queen guitarists/astronomer Brian May has co-authored Bang! The Complete History of the Universe with a collection of accomplished astronomers. The text looks at the origin of the universe and forecasts its end, which, in case you’re wondering, should take place several billion years from now. Good to know, right?
  • Madonna denies that Yohane Banda misunderstood the terms of her adoption of Banda’s son David.

well paranoid android i think may be the greatest song ever written, but there is something so beautifully sullen about how to disappear completely.

Brian | 10/24/2006, 3:06 pm EST

2+2=5 or Like Spinning Plates (Live) are my favorite RH songs

William Goodman | 10/24/2006, 3:08 pm EST

Come on, ‘Lucky’?, seriously? What about ’subterranean Homesick Alien’? Or ‘Let Down’? Hmmmm? And lets not forget ‘The Tourist’? Johnny’s only penned tune from Ok Computer. Falling melodies of absolute radness! Like riding a digital water slide of endorphins.

tom | 10/24/2006, 3:13 pm EST

Black Star. there is no reason to argue.

Beelay | 10/24/2006, 3:15 pm EST

As of late, tom, I’d agree with you: It’s gotta be “Black Star.” But probably my all-time favorite would be “High and Dry.”

It is hard to pick a favourite among so many excellent songs, but I think mine might be either Karma Police or Paranoid Android. Lucky and How to Disappear Completely are also very good.

Lobsters | 10/24/2006, 3:47 pm EST

I hope Brian May’s co author on that astronomy book isn’t Paul Rodgers.

Rrowr | 10/24/2006, 3:56 pm EST

Thom’s pick was a good one…I probably would’ve gone w/ “let down.”, “everything in its right place”, “idioteque” or something.

Seriously, they have, like, 50 great songs. One for every week of the year. Why choose?

Chris | 10/24/2006, 4:44 pm EST

I’d have to go with “Letdown”. Still gives me the chills.

Simon | 10/24/2006, 4:52 pm EST

How to Dissapear is the best Radiohead song. There are some ones that come close, but this one takes the cake.

johnny | 10/24/2006, 4:52 pm EST

eric r and tom are right on the money with this one. Black Star fools. maybe high and dry. the rest of you should get over yourselves.

1) like spinning plates (live)
2) Sail to the Moon
3)electioneering
4)how to disappear completely( have to agree with thom on that)
5)You and Who’s Army?

Rrowr | 10/24/2006, 5:20 pm EST

Seriously, what’s with people liking “Black Star”…its the most generic Radiohead song since their first album…it could be Suede or Oasis or Blur, any Britpop band. The same is only slightly less true of “High & Dry”. I mean, if yr gonna reach back to the Bends, then how about “Planet Telex” or “Fake Plastic Trees”, “the Bends” or “Street Spirit”? “Nice Dream”? You guys picked the two lamest songs on that album.

Ewan | 10/24/2006, 5:25 pm EST

How is it that only a single person mentioned “Idioteque”??? Brilliant composition.

Nate | 10/24/2006, 5:26 pm EST

Bones, Karma Police and Idioteque do it for me.

austin | 10/24/2006, 5:28 pm EST

WAYY CARAZY! i just started to listen to How To Disappear Completely, lately again in the past days (blame it on this fall weather i guess)…

Let Down, Karma Police, Green Plastic Trees, Motion Picture Soundtrack, The Tourist

Zack Newman | 10/24/2006, 5:33 pm EST

electioneering, cause it reminds me of on the beach-era neil young. also lucky is just sooooo intense. and backdrifts has that beautiful vocal melody…

Freidrich Charles | 10/24/2006, 5:50 pm EST

Hunting Bears is the ultimate radio head song, it was life changing- it made me rethink what music is. Made me realize that the Beatles are complete rubbish, for all their “experimentalism” they couldn’t leave the realm of pop music. Except revolution #9, which sucked. Don’t get me wrong, they can make decent pop music, but Radiohead is art.

daveg | 10/24/2006, 6:18 pm EST

I find it strange that no one’s mentioned my 3:

-Packed Likes Sardines in a Crushed Tin Can (the beat)
-I Might be Wrong (the riff)
-Motion Picture Soundtrack (the noisescape)

Dude | 10/24/2006, 6:19 pm EST

State of Ohio’s record is more rockin.

th3 giv3r | 10/24/2006, 6:24 pm EST

since we’re discussing “beautiful” moments, i have chosen two (2) from each album (besides that first one… what was it called? :)

fake plastic trees
bulletproof(i wish i was…)

let down
no surprises

kid a
how to disappear completely (right on thom)

pyramid song
you and whose army
(honorable mention to ‘life in a glass house’)

sail to the moon
there, there

agree to disagree folks, these are just opinions, not fascist dogma.

Sean | 10/24/2006, 6:37 pm EST

subterranean homesick alien is underrated, i think… but its radiohead, its all freakin good

max | 10/24/2006, 6:43 pm EST

id have to go with “i might be wrong” as well…

Kyle | 10/24/2006, 6:45 pm EST

I’m a sucker for OK Computer, give me “Karma Police” and “Let Down”

Moniker A | 10/24/2006, 6:46 pm EST

My 3
1) Let Down

2) Bullet Proof…I Wish I Was

3) Everything In It’s Right Place

Special mention to their cover of “the sexiest song ever written” – Nobody Does It Better

Ed | 10/24/2006, 7:01 pm EST

Here are the 5 best Radiohead tunes; pay no attention to the rest of these fools…

1. Paranoid Android
2. Pyramid Song
3. Myxamotosis
4. How to Disappear Completely
5. Kinetic

Marc | 10/24/2006, 7:09 pm EST

“Let Down”
“Fake Plastic Trees”

those two songs are just brilliant.

The Tourist
Bones
No Surprises
How to Disappear Completely

Dude | 10/24/2006, 8:14 pm EST

Most beautiful Radiohead songs are Fake Plastic Trees and How To Disappear Completely… also among the five best, along with Paranoid Android, Karma Police and Exit Music (For A Film).

Dave | 10/24/2006, 9:01 pm EST

In my opinion the essentails are My Iron Lung,Subterranean Homesick Alien,No Surprises,Kid A,Morning Bell,I Might Be Wrong,Pulk Pull Revolving Door,Go To Sleep and Where I End And You Begin to just name a few.

J. Tincher | 10/24/2006, 9:09 pm EST

Radiohead’s best song by far is “Talk Show Host” off the Romeo & Juliet soundtrack, amazing.

bloodzilla | 10/24/2006, 9:18 pm EST

talk show host

thewufs | 10/24/2006, 9:21 pm EST

“Pyramid Song”. Word.

Runners up…

“Let Down”
“The Tourist”
“Motion Picture Soundtrack”
“Subterranean Homesick Alien”
“Street Spirit”
“Lucky”
“Like Spinning Plates” (one of the most ominous tunes I’ve ever heard)
“Myxomatosis” (not the most beautiful, but perhaps the most arresting song on “Hail To The Thief”)
melodywise, everything on OK Computer is ridiculous.

matt | 10/24/2006, 9:44 pm EST

not there best, but “I Cant” ss pretty underrated

truant | 10/24/2006, 9:51 pm EST

I like the Radiohead song that is really sad bastard sounding and drones on and on. Or maybe I’m thinking of Coldplay… or Snow Patrol… Or James Blunt. Have all British men been neutered as part of some government population control thing?

shane | 10/24/2006, 10:02 pm EST

I might be wrong makes we wanna learn to bootscoot, and i find it impossible to sit still during idioteque… Both classics, but favourite is No Surprises

Bryan | 10/24/2006, 10:29 pm EST

My current favorite is 15 Step, a new one they played live over the summer. I hope it’s the single off the new album – it’s amazing.

jv | 10/24/2006, 10:32 pm EST

i have to agree with Thom on this one, Dissapear is a beautiful track… but my other faves would have to be No Suprises and Lucky

h_e_n_r_y | 10/24/2006, 10:34 pm EST

yup, How to Disappear Completely is it!

[classic... great as a concert closer]

saad | 10/24/2006, 10:37 pm EST

1)creep
2)fake plastic trees
3)everything in its right place
4)paranoid android
5)there there

Jon B. | 10/24/2006, 10:54 pm EST

Ladies and gentlemen, this is Radiohead were talking about here. How can you really try and pick one song out of a catalogue that reflects a very rare, consistent genius?

OK FINE i give in: Let Down, Karma Police, How To Disappear, Life In A Glasshouse, Bones, The Tourist

Wilco | 10/24/2006, 11:44 pm EST

“Myxomatosis” is the best disease song ever: it kicks “Shiny Happy People”’s ass

Mato | 10/24/2006, 11:44 pm EST

Hey guys, they just asked for your favorite track, not your top 5!!!
Mine is PARANOID ANDROID.

Timo | 10/24/2006, 11:52 pm EST

If you have to pick one it has to be:

Paranoid Android

- It shows all parts of the genius of Radiohead in its 3 movements.
- First part: odd chords/odd time signature
- Second part great distorted electric guitar/aggressive rock, unpredictable and original
- Third part: slow, brooding, the essence of Thom Yorke’s vocal ability, perfect use of loud/quiet dynamics create the emotional rise and fall of the music

Let the making fun of Timo begin…

Jordan | 10/25/2006, 12:03 am EST

There are way too many to choose from but one song from the Bends era sticks out for a single lyric (I don’t want you anymore) and that song is How Can You Be Sure. The song is a B-side but can be found on the Japanese import of The Bends. Though I like this song, I can’t claim it my favorite as all the songs are all worth listening to and absorbing.

Arran | 10/25/2006, 12:54 am EST

Top 5:

Let Down
Let Down
Let Down
Let Down
Let Down

I have spoken.

Jeff | 10/25/2006, 12:54 am EST

Street Spirit and
Polyethylene (Parts 1 & 2)

dpr | 10/25/2006, 1:46 am EST

1) Street Spirit (Fade)
2) Fake Plastic Trees
3) The Tourist
4) Planet Telex
and yes 5) How to Disappear Completely

How about Harrowdown Hill from his solo album too, that’s a great track.

jesse b | 10/25/2006, 2:43 am EST

backdrifting and where bluebirds fly. and then subterranean homesick alien

smirky | 10/25/2006, 3:27 am EST

do you people use ears? what about “scatterbrain”? that song is gorgeous…

Gaz | 10/25/2006, 5:08 am EST

Paranoid Android is the Bohemian Rhapsody of the 90’s. This is the song that pricked up my ears and made me think hmmmm…radiohead..have to check this band out….

Nicole | 10/25/2006, 6:29 am EST

Scatterbrain, Let Down and Pyramid Song and True Love Waits for beauty. For sheer mind-blowing transcendent rock, you have to go with the almighty and powerful Paranoid Android…

Gah. Too many wonderful songs to chose from!

pedro alves | 10/25/2006, 9:26 am EST

BEst RAdiohead song

for me Now is Lucky…
and i love Climbing up the walls…so i dont know…i love it all

Scenic Anemia | 10/25/2006, 9:40 am EST

Climbing Up The Walls. When I finally go completely batshit crazy, I hope that is what it sounds like in my head.

utzpinpin | 10/25/2006, 10:34 am EST

a pretty cool radiohead song is CITIZEN ERASED by Muse

Adam | 10/25/2006, 11:53 am EST

Thom got it right, folks. ‘How to Disappear’ is their greatest song. It is serene, affecting, horribly depressing, and epic all combined into one song.

pacman | 10/25/2006, 12:32 pm EST

They change a lot, but always up there are
1. Let Down
2. There There
3. Morning Bell
4. Street Spirit
5. Idioteque

Timo | 10/25/2006, 1:49 pm EST

How to Disappear is good… but it is no Exit Music. I think the mood and idea of the 2 songs is similar, yet Exit Music wins out… still neither are the best RH song- that still belongs to Paranoid Android.

Alex from Russia | 10/25/2006, 2:08 pm EST

my favorite is “In Limbo”

Marv | 10/25/2006, 2:32 pm EST

The MOST BEAUTIFUL Radiohead songs are Let Down, Thinking About You, and the live acoustic recording of Black Star. But yeah, their best is Paranoid Android.

Stone | 10/25/2006, 2:32 pm EST

Interesting that nobody has mentioned mine yet..

“Big Ideas” (also known as “Nude”), is only a bootleg, but they play it live often and hopefully will record it proper next go around.
Honorable mention goes to “Pearly”.

Marv | 10/25/2006, 2:33 pm EST

Shit, i’m really hung over. When i said Let Down, i meant High and Dry. Sorry guys.

rustyshackleford | 10/25/2006, 2:55 pm EST

2)Paranoid Android
3)Idioteque
4)My Iron Lung

“I will”

glenda | 10/27/2006, 1:15 pm EST

pretty safe to say that a best song can’t ever be pinpointed. agreed, everyone’s got their own faves…but even their so-called “lame” songs have their merit. radiohead is truly a gift. that said…how about choosing your favorite remixed r.h. track. mine’s gotta be zero7’s reworking of climbing up the walls. tho mark ronson’s version of just was damn good…

heidi | 10/27/2006, 2:01 pm EST

mine really is Let Down… with Idioteque falling fast on its heels

The Him | 10/27/2006, 2:46 pm EST

This is a difficult one for a Radiohead fan. I’d have to say “Paranoid Android” cause it was the first one that blew me away completely. OK Computer is a masterpiece, so after that:
Fake Plastic Trees
Street Spirit (Fade Out)

Pam | 10/27/2006, 9:23 pm EST

anything off “The Bends”

Josie_future music journalist | 10/28/2006, 7:04 pm EST
