Kirsten Dunst: The Latest Actor to Go Rock Star?

10/24/06, 6:30 pm EST

One little tease of a line at the end of Liz Smith’s column in Variety suggests that Kirsten Dunst is going to play Debbie Harry in a big screen version of Harry’s life story. Our immediate reaction is not the same you’ve-got-to-be-fucking-kidding-me thing we felt when it was announced that Zooey Deschanel had won the epic battle to represent Janis Joplin onscreen, but it’s close.

As revealed in this side-by-side shot, Dunst actually looks a bit like Harry — heart-shaped face, the wide-set eyes, the cheekbones, the being-blond thing. But, like, no! It’s fine with us when rockers want to do TV or movies (we just watched Johnny Cash play a version of himself in an old Columbo episode the other night — freaking awesome) but no actor can actually play a rock star. There is no one the movie-making world could offer up that would be worthy of playing Debbie Harry, or Janis, or Joey Ramone, or Iggy Pop (Elijah Wood?!?? Please, god, no!)

Are we insane? Who would you like to see in the Debbie Harry role?

You are insane, but only cos Val Kilmer proved that he could be a better Jim Morrison than Jim Morrison.

WENDY O WILLIAMS

BRITTANY MURPHY

Lobsters | 10/24/2006, 6:49 pm EST

Kirsten Dunst does not look like Debbie Harry. Debbie Harry is pretty.

Judas Constant | 10/24/2006, 7:17 pm EST

I think Vincent Chase can play a rock star. He’s got the face, the looks, and the head.

ProKirsten | 10/24/2006, 7:25 pm EST

i think kirsten dunst actually might do a pretty good job as debbie harry….and one reason why brittany murphy will def do good as a rockstar is cuz she seems like she could be on crack i love her and she is amazing but its true….and if anyone has seen rockstar mark wahlberg was beyond amazing in it

Rich N. | 10/24/2006, 7:31 pm EST

Sure, why not? She could pull it off.

V | 10/24/2006, 7:32 pm EST

I think kirsten Dunst would do a good job at playing Debbie Harry.

sam | 10/24/2006, 7:40 pm EST

If no actor can play a rock star, why not get a rock star to play a rock star? Oh that’s right, rock stars can’t act.

nachobidniss | 10/24/2006, 7:59 pm EST

sounds like another boring idea cooked up by zoey coppola and xandra at grotto studios. If Dave at grotto has anything to do with it, maybe there’s a chance in hell.

nachobidniss | 10/24/2006, 8:00 pm EST

yet another boring sounding idea cooked up by Zoey Coppola?

nachobidniss | 10/24/2006, 8:02 pm EST

Does anyone think Steve Kilbey of The Church could play a great Debbie Harry?

RTP | 10/24/2006, 8:07 pm EST

Scarlett Johannson would make a terrific Debbie Harry. She looks more like her than Dunst does, she’s a terrific actress, and she’s making an album where she covers Tom Waits songs.

Donald | 10/24/2006, 8:22 pm EST

I think Mila Kunis, (with a little blonde hair dye) would look startingly like Ms, Harry.

kim | 10/24/2006, 8:24 pm EST

Debbi is a sex goddess even at 60 she looks so hot But Debbi is a bad girl get someone better to play her ! But the truth is none of those girl can measure up to her ! The only rockstar Kirsten Dunst should play is Billy Corgan.

knowledge | 10/24/2006, 9:45 pm EST

…sorry for the dead link in that last post – Google “Billy Corgan”; click on the top hit & look for Kirsten Dunst in the picture…there she is, hiding behind Billy’s hands, bald.

Kh@rmas0me | 10/24/2006, 10:44 pm EST

With all due respect for the fact that I’m thirstin’ for Kirsten, she’s still not quite hot enough to play Debbie Harry.

anonymous | 10/24/2006, 11:40 pm EST

Courtney love kind of looks like debbie harry, but she’s a little older.

kirsten dunst cant be an actor shes a woman, shed be an actress

www.heatherjeane.com | 10/25/2006, 12:35 am EST

I had a revelation last night while reading our family doctor’s book, The Centre of the Cyclone. He seems to know that all this rock and roll was created by a lawyer named Hamilton, who lived down in the South East near a town called Kieth and Mt Gambier. There was a cyclone too that wiped out the Darwinian evolution town of Darwin about 3 years after our doctor’s book came out. They tried to personfiy the destruction into the life of one person and rolling stone magazine likes that “person” whereas I do not. No accounting for tastes, I suppose. Wadda ya think we are? Some different species that needs to be aparthied?

Tom | 10/25/2006, 12:43 am EST

I was reading online at U2Log.com that at the upcoming Q music awards in London that U2 and Oasis are being seated at opposite ends of the theatre because the Gallagher brothers want to have some words with Bono and his boys, Gallagher has been taking some swipes at Bono in interviews, what`s this feud all about???

Fresh Comments | 10/25/2006, 1:00 am EST

I hope Troma Films and the Troma Team, will make the movie. Blondie & Dagwoods. Debbie Harry has fresh good looks like Racheal Ray. Thats why people married her… Cuz she’s good looking and very nice….
U2, vs. 0asis Bono and Liam are lovers, it’s a spat. Since B0n0 left his wife, and Liam swore off women thier lives haven’t been the same.

M | 10/25/2006, 1:40 am EST

Now I’m a huge Zooey Deschanel fan, so I’m trying to stay open minded, but her playing Janis is ify. However I think the reason that people want to make movies about these people, is the same reason that no one could ever fully imitate the presence they had, because they were such interestingly unique individuals. Still though I’ll admit Val Kilmer as Jim Morrison was awesome.

PjMacD | 10/25/2006, 1:42 am EST

Martin Short could do Mick Jagger. For the seconf half of his career anyway..Keith Richards could be played by Matt Dillon if he last some weight. And the part of the lame musicpress and lazy comedians could be played by … the lame music press is actually already doing a pretty good job.. and so are the lazy comedians. And can’t Debrah Harry Be played By Paris Hilton!? Fuck Im a genius! The best Idea I’ve had all day. LA here I come.

Owen H. | 10/25/2006, 1:43 am EST

Sorry, she does look like Debbie Harry, maybe abit less attractive…but I’m sure hollywood “magic” Can takecare of that. there are alot of movies stars that could pose as actors, why if Donald southerland was thirty years younger and you hit him in the face with a midget repeatedly…he’d loose similar to Joey Ramone (dont get me wrong, I love the romanes…but Joey was no Pitt.) I think Levi Shreiber (Sp?) would make a great Eddie Vedder…not that pearl jam would ever let anyone make a film about them.

Owen H. | 10/25/2006, 1:43 am EST

Sorry, movie stars that could pose as rock stars, I mean.

PRINCE WISH | 10/25/2006, 1:48 am EST

it is no surprise hollywood sucks!!! it may make debbie harry popular to all the teens that need their music spoon fed to them…

Pieter | 10/25/2006, 8:07 am EST

Isn’t it more appreciated and required for the performance to hit the right key other than the exact resemblance?
If that is not true, then why the hell has ‘Stars in their Eyes’ not been destroyed and forgotten for its poor performances and resemblances?

johnny | 10/25/2006, 8:43 am EST

I think Brittany Murphy could play Debbie Harry better than Kirsten Dunst.

lmao | 10/25/2006, 9:11 am EST

you people are NUTS. maybe you guys don’t like kirsten dunst, but she is an amazing actress and is growing with every film she makes. she’s been doing this long enough and i think she could do an astonishing job at debbie. brittany murphy? just no. ad just because scarlett is making an album of TOM WAITS songs how does that make her at all a better choice to play debbie harry? now i’m not saying she’s a bad choice, i do think she’d probably be better than kirsten in the looks department but has anyone seen the black dahlia? her acting in that made me cringe.

it’s all opinion, baby.

nyc | 10/25/2006, 9:38 am EST

no matter how outrageous she pushes herself to be, dunst will never capture the porn star turned pop-punk star the Harry became. She lacks the sizzling charisma and intense marilyn monroe syndrome. even more so with Elijah wood. That kids tapioca pudding and Iggy’s a flaming steel chain being swung over the head of a mesculin indcued nightmare. That’s why they’re actors, they’re fakers, and can never touch the real thing.

I dont know..hollywood is capable of doing some pretty crazy things. Was there a Ray Charles fan who was psyched to hear that Ray was going to be played by Jamie Foxx? You just don’t know until the movie’s made…Personally, though, I think there could be someone who more naturally fits the character.

Bauer | 10/25/2006, 11:11 am EST

If you want someone who looks like Debbie go with Elisha Cuthbert.

BOB-O | 10/25/2006, 3:18 pm EST

um…no one. how about they just don’t do a movie about debbie harry? that’d be pretty pretty pretty nice

marie, | 10/25/2006, 3:24 pm EST

what. the. crap. does rockers really need movies made about them, played by some stuck up snooty actor? hm.. no. and I definatly dont want to be caught up in the craze, when a the teens my age go ape nuts and start listening to only the hits of the songs, and think they know everything, when their just part of a washed up fad. my gosh this makes me mad.

LA Dreaming | 10/25/2006, 4:47 pm EST

How about an unknown? There’s a Blondie tribute band in LA with a lead singer (Jennifer Rosengarth) that has the early Blondie years down. Great voice, similar build.

heavyhitter | 10/25/2006, 5:10 pm EST

Err..Val Kilmer as Mr.Mojo Risin’, anyone? :p

The Gays | 10/25/2006, 6:39 pm EST

Kirsten Dunst would make an excellent Debbie Harry. What’s all the cryin about?

oh, but why? | 10/25/2006, 6:55 pm EST

Don’t get me wrong because I LOVE Debbie Harry but is her life really worthy of a major motion picture? Did she overcome obstacles that seemed unsurmountable or devote a large part of her life or career to a worthy cause? Has she died a tragic death or revealed any scandalous affairs? More than half of all rock amd roll stars are guilty of substance abuse so this can’t be the movies incentative. The fact that she was an adopted child may have a personal touch but can’t carry the weight of a story. Living your life as a beautiful woman and achieving fame and fortune from some great pop songs may sound like a great idea on paper but can it really hold the attention of the world’s craving for dirty laundry?

Kirsten Dunst? Blech. Scarlette is capable of way-more drama.

nay | 10/25/2006, 8:10 pm EST

i’m not sure, but renee zellweger just turned down the janis joplin’s project, she could have done it wonderfuly, she’s so versatil, you never know what to expect from her.
i love them both, i’m really sad…

Atomic Guy | 10/25/2006, 9:09 pm EST

Being a lifelong fan of Debbie Harry, the idea of someone else playing her is sort of frightening as Debbie Harry is a true Original. I can see Kirsten Dunst playing Debbie Harry and I’m sure she would do a great job. There are a few other choices though that are just as good if not better: Michelle Pheiffer, Cameron Diaz, Sienna Miller. The fact that a movie is being made about Miss Harry is a joy and LONG overdue. To the person who felt Debbie Harry’s life was not interesting enough to merrit a movie – THINK AGAIN! Besides being given up for adoption as an infant, overcoming drugs, deep depression, being at the epicenter of American Punk Rock at CBGBs (along side the Ramones, Talking Heads and Patti Smith), having achieved worldwide fame, then at her peak finding herself nursing her boyfriend and musical partner Chris Stein for 3 years only to find herself eclipsed by Madonna on the same record label, to the Blondie Reunion miracle in the mid-90’s which resulted in the 3 million plus NO Exit cd… I would urge that person to consider how much Debbie Harry “Paved” the way for singers like, Madonna, Courtney Love, Gwen Stefani, and countless female led bands like; Garbage, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Cardigans, Berlin, and On and on and on. Oh Yes my friend, THINK TWICE.

CGEffect | 10/25/2006, 9:37 pm EST

Not as bad as the idea of Mike Myers as Keith Moon. I’m telling you, give Jason Schwartzman a tweezer and you’ve got Moon the Loon! Plus he’s in a band.

Cobalt Crow | 10/25/2006, 9:46 pm EST

Alison Goldfrapp. Gwen Stefani might work, too.

mef | 10/25/2006, 11:10 pm EST

Debbie was/is hot….Kirsten would work but my vote is Scarlotte

McGuire | 10/26/2006, 10:35 am EST

who wants to eat a dick?

Steve Wood | 10/26/2006, 2:44 pm EST

Patsy Kensit would be the best person to play Debbie Harry. She’s a decent actress, used to be a singer, has a similar-sounding speaking voice (different accent being English, but silky smooth like Debbie’s), but the main thing is she looks very similar to Debbie, with cheekbones to die for.

jill | 10/26/2006, 4:32 pm EST

BRITTANY MURPHY or Scarlett.
Kirsten only does one role, the “I’m sexy but really really cute and charming and a really really nice girl” role that is played out and phoney phoney phoney. She’s good at it mind you and a lot of people buy it over and over, but I’m tired of it. She can’t act. She just does PR for herself.

jerome | 10/26/2006, 4:48 pm EST

ha ha. that billie corgan thing is hilarious. hey, don’t ruin it for talentless dunst – that deep creepy stare she does all the time for the photoshoots is her sexy, irresistable, mysterious look.

no, not dunst. she ruined marie antoinette, now she’s going to shoot down another grand lady?

she’s quite good at the phoney, sweet, vulnerable thing she has going on, she should stick to that one.

Big Dope | 10/26/2006, 9:49 pm EST

I don’t think anyone will be a convincing Debbie Harry in a film. If you have ever met or seen Debbie on stage you know what I mean!!!!!

Reyn | 10/26/2006, 11:52 pm EST

I think Janice of the Muppet Show would play a great Debbie Harry….

Shakedown | 10/27/2006, 11:14 am EST

Michelle Pfiffer would be the best actress to play Debbie. But come on Debbie is so hot and looks absolutley stunning for 61 years! More like 41 years old. She s gonna be a hard act to follow whoever gets the role!

Kent in Kentucky | 10/27/2006, 12:18 pm EST

I don’t know of ANY actress that would be able to play Debbie Harry. Another bio pic that I HOPE never sees light is one on Stevie Nicks…I don’t think any actress would be able to portray her and do her justice.

Matt | 10/27/2006, 12:25 pm EST

Kirsten Dunst is NOT an amazing actress. The only person who should play Harry is Elisha Cuthbert. (Who isn’t necessarily a muuuch better actress, but she isn’t fugly and annoying as all hell. So she’s a far better choice than Kirsten.)

Chelle | 10/27/2006, 1:06 pm EST

Only Debbie Harry should play Debbie Harry….she’s just too unique to duplicate….sorry Kirsten…..

Possum | 10/27/2006, 1:32 pm EST

What the hell, Debbie Harry wasn’t that talented, she was barely more than a one hit wonder, if that. And no matter how fugly you think Kirsten is She hotter than anyhting you’ll ever get a chance to fuck, unless you hire a callgirl. And you would have to pay extra!

Iannis | 10/27/2006, 2:21 pm EST

The book of Debbie Harry’s life has still many unwritten chapters.
She’s still an inrcedibly active artist, that has the inspiration and energy to keep her going on, for an indefinite time! The Blondie story could be the theme for a movie about her, but she hasn’t even finished that chapter yet, so there will be plenty of time for some charismatic and stunning-looking actresses to audition for that role. Would there be one to combine all the talents, charisma and beauty that represent the living legend named Deborah? I doubt it! Ms Harry is a Goddess! The Aphrodite of our times….

Josh | 10/27/2006, 3:39 pm EST

i don’t know about the whole Kirsten Dunst thing, all i know is that Richard Gere looks just like Roger Waters, and if they ever did come up with a Pink Floyd movie, he would have to play Roger.

atomicmariauk | 10/27/2006, 3:59 pm EST

Michelle Pfeiffer is the only actress who has any similar looks to Debbie Harry, just look at those cheekbones – enough said.

marcecheap | 10/27/2006, 6:38 pm EST

debbie was the prettiest girl in the world ..and she was so rocker!!!Debbie was unique…and still is a nice person an a beautiful lady..really love her..when i was 14 (now i´m forty)my girlfriend said that i was pretty much in love with debbie than herself…from Argentina ..Marcelo

Phredd | 10/27/2006, 8:44 pm EST

Kirsten isnt a very good actress or would even be believable as the kind-of pretty Debbie Harry. But then, what the hell did Debbie Harry do to be so famous anyways? Her music sucked.Shes just famous for being famous.Kirstens shoddy acting, errrr career, has been more substantial than Harrys so-called music career.I vote for no movie about Debbie Harry.

marc | 10/27/2006, 10:06 pm EST

fu$k anybody who doesn’t think Debbie Harry deserve’s her own movie!!!She ruless and will out last most of the A holes who have nothing better to do then talk sh*t about her.

CJ Sparrow | 10/28/2006, 10:34 am EST

I think MoJo should have been played by the late great Michael Hutchence. Though, Val did do a great job, I could have used the eye candy of Mr. Hutchence. As for Blondie, I think they could probably find a no name who could look more like her (kind of like how Sharon Stone was a no name in Basic Instinct).

earthboy | 10/31/2006, 9:54 am EST

How about Jeff Bridges as Brian Wilson?

Kirsten dust looks exactly like debbie harry, but she seems too serious for the role, debbie harry acts like a crack head. Kirsten would flush her career wth that role.

I think Dunst could pull it off and play Debbie very well. The thing that gets me is one of the posters called Debbie a one hit wonder? WTF?
I don’t think 4 #1 US singles and countless overseas hit singles could be called a one hit wonder. Please!!! Debbie Harry and Blondie are rock and roll legends. Debbie has been on the cover of over 200 magazines and made more than 30 films. Has sold 50 million records. Do your homework before you call her a one hit wonder.

Kirsten Dunst bears absolutely no resemblence to Debbie Harry. Also she is talentless and too unattractive to be an actress. Obviously in her case she just got by on pure luck!

MrMe | 12/17/2008, 10:54 am EST

They look NOTHING alike.
Debbie was beautiful not cute.
Kirsten is cute not beautiful.
Lips and nose are completely different.. and Harry’s face is like half the width of Kirten’s.
Why the hell does she always try to play the parts of women who are 10 times prettier than she is?
Shes a good actress but she is not sexy, beautiful, not a great body..
shes just an average girl really.
Debbie Harry… not so average.
