Everyone needs a pet cause, and this one is going to be ours. We would like to join Panic! at the Disco frontman Brendon Urie in speaking out against the unfair categorization of his band as “emo.” Urie recently told the NME that the “emo” tag is a “stereotype” referring to “guys that are weak and have failing relationships write about how sad they are.” Speaking in between what were undoubtedly breathy, fraught telephone exchanges with his potentially bisexual girlfriend (she just doesn’t know what she is, you know?), Urie vehemently defended the band against the vicious “emo” label. “Emo is bullshit,” he scream-sobbed and perhaps, in a fit of man-petulance, wiped a black tear of running mascara off the ruffled sleeve of his vintage tuxedo shirt. “If people want to take it for the literal sense of the word, yes we’re an emotional band, we put a lot of thought into what we do,” he explained, but added that in no way does being emotional make his band emo. As you can see “emo” branding hurts everyone, so please don’t use the “e-word” irresponsibly. Especially when describing overly sensitive emo bands who insist they’re not emo.
