So according to this story, the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) now has a team of undercover agents hell-bent on busting cover bands and unassuming restauranteurs. Long story short: The owner of a small-potatoes Portland restaurant may have to pay upwards of half a million dollars for copyright infringement for letting a local band play covers of Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Wonder and War. Yeah, we’re sure paying between $700 and $30,000 PER SONG won’t be a problem since the restaurant business is so lucrative. Apparently he neglected to pay the requisite fee before allowing the band to perform copyrighted songs. Does this mean that if someone catches us singing “Waiting for Tonight” in the shower, we’ll be liable for a coupla g’s? Whatever the case, this seems supremely un-Dude. Moral of the story? Refrain from getting drunk and serenading shadowy characters with your favorite Stevie Wonder tune. [via Tiny Mixtapes]
