Tom Waits Brings Out the Inner Chanteuse in Scarlett Johansson

10/16/06, 2:30 pm EST

Leave it to Scarlett Johansson to do something all the other It girls are doing, except better. Johansson is apparently planning to record her debut album, Scarlett Sings Tom Waits, this winter. The record will, you know, consist of Waits material sung by Ms. Johansson. Scott Storch will be producing of course. Just kidding. Actually it’s not entirely clear who Johansson will be collaborating with on this project.

This isn’t the first time the pout-y hipster dream girl has been paired with an older icon; Bob Dylan featured Johansson in his ethereal, maudlin video for “When the Deal Goes Down,” and then there was the seriously spark-filled martini-sharing sessions between Johansson and Bill Murray in Lost in Translation. This is the first time Johansson has put her heart on her sleeve re: her admiration for one of those gruff, aged iconic men, as opposed to the other way around. The best part is that there isn’t even a cringe factor here. Actress plus recording contract usually equals completely mortifying disaster, but we have this weird faith that she can pull it off. Can she?

Mr. Waits is one of my all-time favourites, and Ms. Johansson my pick as one of the most beautiful women on the planet.

This is going to be… interesting. I’m not sure good, or bad-interesting either. Wonder what Mr. Waits thinks… look out Ms. Brennan; you’ve got some competition. :)

ben | 10/16/2006, 2:55 pm EST

as long as she stays with pre-Swordfishtrombones/Bone Machine material, she may have a shot…otherwise someone is going to be embarrassed

Scott P | 10/16/2006, 3:38 pm EST

If she records “Pasties and a G-String,” I may be able to forgive any horrifying song choice she may make from that point on.

Lennox | 10/16/2006, 3:42 pm EST

agreed. anything pre swordfishtrombones/ raindogs. She could have some trouble with some of the stuff on Blue Valentine. I just don’t know about this one. But who cares, the Orphans box set is due out next month.

mr roboto | 10/16/2006, 4:16 pm EST

maybe, i haven’t heard her sing yet

G | 10/16/2006, 5:06 pm EST

If she sings with no clothes on I’ll go see her.

Donald | 10/16/2006, 5:40 pm EST

I vote that Scarlett sings “All Stripped Down,” from Bone Machine.

Scenic Anemia | 10/16/2006, 5:58 pm EST

I’ll only listen if she records “In The Coliseum”. I would pay good money to hear that. By “good money” I mean, of course, I would download it from some quasi-legal russian mp3 site.

BuddahWorthmore | 10/16/2006, 6:11 pm EST

Scarlett singing “Heart Attack and Vine”…This girl is the 3rd Coming…oh my GOD.

Mr Didi | 10/16/2006, 7:36 pm EST

‘My money’s on ‘God’s Away On Business’ being the stand out track.

grievous pimp | 10/16/2006, 9:37 pm EST

she shoud cover NWAs efil4zaggin in its entirety next.

Cliff | 10/16/2006, 11:41 pm EST

Scarlett is a better singer than any of her contemporaries with recording contracts. Who’s her competition? Ashlee? Paris? Go to itunes and sample Scarlett’s rendition of Summertime. She’s got cred.

cathy p. | 10/17/2006, 1:26 am EST

I LOVE Tom Waits, but she better start gargling with razor blades.

Barret | 10/17/2006, 1:53 pm EST

Any gorgeous woman (or even homely ones) who wants to take on Tom Waits are A-okay in my book. What I want to know is, where the hell are all the non-celebrity chicks who love Tom Waits? I’d like to hang with them (even if they don’t have the ridiculous body of Miss Johansen).

I Don't like Tom Waits... | 10/17/2006, 2:47 pm EST

but I’ll buy her CD Scarlett Is HOT!

Josephine | 10/17/2006, 3:24 pm EST

God, she’s a disaster singing karaoke in Lost in translation….:dies:

Tom, why are you doing this to us??

The Island | 10/17/2006, 6:23 pm EST

Tom,Scarlett and Billy Bob Thorton as The STD Trio. I’d like to see this music group have some hits and Billy Bob might get Scarlett pregnant! What a concept album…

max | 10/17/2006, 7:32 pm EST

tom waits is the man, i hope johansson can do him justice.

Greg | 10/17/2006, 9:21 pm EST

Here’s a question for the next RS blog top list: which other celebrities should (or shouldn’t) cover which songwriters? My first suggestion is “Andy Dick Sings Bruce Springsteen.”

I second God’s Away on Business as the standout track, but keep an ear out for Filipino Box Spring Hog as the follow-up single. Part of me cant wait to hear this train wreck of an album.

RyFly | 10/20/2006, 12:22 pm EST

I made a cool illustration of Tom Waits for a DayTrotter.com review of his last show in Chicago. Here it is. http://www.daytrotter.com/revi ews/230/tom-waits-the-frazzled -musicmaker-takes-the-form-of- a-body

Kracka C | 10/20/2006, 12:27 pm EST

Well, I haven’t heard her sing yet…so I can’t really gauge that, but Waits’ songs are so well written that pretty much anybody can cover them and interpret them differently…some doing them well (Norah Jones, Springsteen) some…not so well (Rod Stewart comes to mind…)
I’m interested in finding out what songs she picks. My bet is that she picks a lot of the jazzier numbers from the first few albums, and I bet she picks “Hold On.”

Bill | 10/20/2006, 12:49 pm EST

Waits once said in an interview, when asked about making it as a musician, that “Everybody loves music. But that’s not enough. Music has to love you back.”

I don’t doubt that she loves music and she loves Tom’s music, but I guess we’ll see whether the music loves her back.

Bob | 10/20/2006, 1:04 pm EST

A nice torchy version of “The Piano Has Been Drinking” might really hit the spot!

metalgirl | 10/20/2006, 1:15 pm EST

Ms. Johansson is an inspiration to curvy, intelligent, grown up women everywhere. She seems very mature for her age. And her voice is rather nice. Another actress’ voice and personality I like is Zoe Deschanel. They’re both classic beauties who will never go out of style much like their contemporaries (i.e. lohan, hilton, etc.)

dan | 10/20/2006, 1:40 pm EST

I’m in agreement with Scott P. If she does “Pasties and a G-String”, I wouldn’t really care what else she sang. It would be well worth it just to hear a beautiful young thing like Scarlett J. singing “smellin’ like a brewery, looking like a tramp”!

Loneshewolf | 10/20/2006, 2:23 pm EST

For God’s sake, this is ridiculous, the woman is ugly (she has coarse features, and a disastrous figure), vulgar and she doesn’t have a shred of talent! I hate her! The whole idea is perfectly grotesque, I hope Tom Waits won’t let her perpetrate this pitiful massacre!

pitythefool | 10/20/2006, 7:32 pm EST

I suppose that you, Loneshewolf, are full of talent, beauty, etc., that has gone, strangely, unappreciated.

I’d say Johanssen is at least as pretty as Waits is ugly.

Loneshewolf | 10/22/2006, 5:44 pm EST

You should pity yourself, Pitythefool. Scarlett Johansson isn’t pretty and Tom Waits isn’t ugly. And you’re ALWAYS wrong. How do you do it?

su | 10/25/2006, 2:08 pm EST

Has everyone gone totally insane? I am not trying to idealize tom waits as this god who is too bright for us mortals, but damn, something just doesn’t sit well about this whole thing. To take something as unique and true as tom and his music, and then bastardize it by having a young starlette cover his music for her debut album is nothing more than pop/commercial/spinned bull! i know, now i am the crazy one

Richard | 10/25/2006, 7:04 pm EST

I bought her Summertime as suggested by Cliff, I’m listening to it now and I am totally surprised. She is quite good! Who would have guessed?

Lars | 11/15/2006, 6:29 am EST

If an actress from Hollywood procalimed herself a Waits fan, I wouldn’t care if she was Hulk Hogans siamese twin. Hope she sings “The Piano has been Drinking”. That’d be interesting. Or “Hoist That Rag” :)

Serg G. | 1/30/2007, 5:54 pm EST

Hey guys!
What do you think that Scarlett Johansson (actress) actually is a clone from original person, which has nothing with acting career. That clone was created illegally using stolen biological material. Original person is very nice (not damn sexy), most important – CHRISTIAN young lady!
———————— —————————— -
I’ll tell you guys more, that clones (it’s not only one) made in GERMANY – world leader manufacturer of humans clones, to be more specific, it is in Ludwigshafen am Rhein, North Bavaria, Mr. Helmut Kohl home town. You can not even imaging the scale of the cloning activity. But warning! Helmut Kohl clone staff 100% controlling all their clones spreading around the world, they are very accurate with that, some of them are still NAZI type disciplined and mind controlled clones, so be careful get close with clones you will be controlled as well. Think wise..
Thank you for understanding!
Her close friend Sergei G.
P.S.
H.R. 534, the Human Cloning Prohibition Act of 2003, was introduced to the U.S. House of Representatives on February 5, 2003. After discussion, it was passed on February 27 by a vote of 241-155. It now moves on to the Senate for consideration. This bill makes it unlawful for any person or entity to perform or participate in human cloning, or to ship or receive embryos produced by human cloning. The penalties are imprisonment of up to 10 years and fines of $1 million or more.

Taylor | 4/12/2007, 6:44 pm EST

oh my.. well as much as I adore miss johansson, i doubt that she could do any justice to mr waits and she’s insane or pretentious for trying…

Instead of buying her album when it comes out, spend your money of a real waits album, you’ll be a much better person for it.

Anonymous | 4/24/2007, 9:28 am EST

“But warning! Helmut Kohl clone staff 100% controlling all their clones spreading around the world, they are very accurate with that, some of them are still NAZI type disciplined and mind controlled clones, so be careful get close with clones you will be controlled as well.”

i’d like to hang with any chick who likes waits enough to learn his material…much less go to the length to record an album of his…she wouldn’t even need to look as hot as Miss Scarlett…on the other foot, it would be hard to hang with any girl as hot as Miss Scarlett (or not) who didn’t know or, when she did, didn’t like Mr. Tom…

AnDrE hUnT | 2/28/2008, 4:26 am EST

What if someone decided to do a whole album of Hoagy Carmichael, or Jerome Kern? What is the difference in the rules? I would think that one of the problems people have with this is that when TOm does a song…it has so such style , force, and character, that it is instantly the classic version of it. Even the ballads on Orphans come across that way…some of them are unbeleivably good…I hope you folks out there put that second CD of Orphans on and just go for a drive. Orphans, of course, should have won best album and easily should have won best song for some of the great choices it had. 15 of those songs were better than anything out there that the grammy folks were considering. Listen to Widow’s Grove lyrics.
Profound.

AnDrE hUnT | 2/28/2008, 4:29 am EST

If any of this hoopla puts Tom Waits in front of people who have no clue and opens their eyes and ears, and they start listening to original Waits, then it’s all good. The album alone won’t do that as much as the media attention it will get. really, there are a lot of people who have no clue as to who the master is.

AnDrE hUnT | 2/28/2008, 4:37 am EST

Maybe Scarlett should look at the One From The Heart Songs, but I understand she has locked in her choices. Crystal Gayle is so fine on that album with Tom, that I think they should do more material together on occassion. By the way, the re-release of the One From The Heart Soundtrack has two more songs at the end, and one of them is an Empty Pockets suite that is so gorgeous and amazing that it blows anything else released in 2006, and it was kicked off the first release!
