Sting: When Will David Bowie Show Him the Way?

10/16/06, 6:36 pm EST

Sting

Everytime we read the title of Sting’s 16th century lute music record, Songs From the Labyrinth, we think about the movie Labyrinth and how Sting was totally not in it but Bowie was and how Bowie is so much cooler than Sting but that Sting is still cool. We’re thinking that Sting’s ability to score a serious hit on the classical music charts with this album boosts him up a few notches on the grand rock hierarchy (though nowhere near Bowie, of course). A lute is involved, after all. Big points for lute use.

Sting reportedly explained the intersection between this project and his role as a rock star by saying, “I feel that my job as a pop artist is to develop as a musician, and to bring into my sphere elements that aren’t necessarily pop.”

What non-traditional instrument should he employ next? We suggest the Zurna.

I’m sorry Sting…I’ve been with you a long time now, but your records have become progressively less interesting. Being a musician myself, that is not a compliment.

fAiThErs | 10/16/2006, 7:03 pm EST

lute’s are fricken awesome! sting gets props for thinking out of the box…but yes, bowie is still the man..but sting is cool too, poor sting, bowie overshadows him…

meh he’s better off just reuniting the police

Skullfreak | 10/16/2006, 10:07 pm EST

Yeah……but Sting’s not a fudge-packer….

RockGod | 10/16/2006, 10:09 pm EST

I’ve completely lost all respect for this man. To take something as special as the Police and to flush it down the toilet to pursue a less then steller solo career? Sting needs to reunite with the all mighty Copoland and bring back the music that matters.

idioteque | 10/16/2006, 10:42 pm EST

The Police were the shit.

Sting’s solo career, not so much.

Laurens from Indonesia | 10/16/2006, 10:47 pm EST

Sting rules! And how can he not with a stage name that cool. The Police? That’s for nostalgists.

Some Guy | 10/16/2006, 10:50 pm EST

Yo whats with people who are still beating the dead Police horse. Holy smokes, move on; the guy is a terrific musician, writing oscar/grammy caliber stuff for decades after the Police. I know its tough to believe, but loads of musicians actually don’t want to play in a punk band into their fifties.

Skip Winkle | 10/16/2006, 10:59 pm EST

“STINGFIR and the Pan Flute”
…oh boy, I can see the late night TV commecials now.

Get out!

You think Bowie’s COOL! LOSER!

Talentless, gimmicky glam-boy who’s not so glam!

anonymous | 10/16/2006, 11:09 pm EST

didgeredoo, theremin, or a melodica

Okay, putting his knack for writing hits when it suits him (and it hasnt in a long while, he seems to feel writing pop songs beneath the artist he desires to be) aside, there is one thing that makes Sting different from Bowie. And for that matter Prince, Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Andre 3000, and bruce Springsteen. These other artist have so much natural talent that they can and have made entire albums of compelling material without once trying to write hits. What’s Going On, Sign O’ the Times, Nebraska, Live at the Apollo, Idlewild, and anything from Bowie’s Berlin era are statements to this. Basically there are three classes of artists. Interesting, Catchy, and Compelling. Interesting groups are passingly amusing, usually amounting more to luck and timing than anything else. A Top Notch example: The Sex pistols. Compelling artists are the ones who can and will when they wnat to make singles, but delve into their own talents to push themselves, and consistently put out masterworks. And then there is Catchy. Some people have the lucrative gift of knowing their way around a melody. If they stuck to this, and pushed themselves only to stay relevant they’d be fine, but time and again Catchy artists try to be Compelling, and fail. George Michael for instanec. Sting for another. Don’t worry Sting, it’s nothing to be ashamed of. John Lennon was compelling. But like yourself, Paul McCartney was Catchy. And knowing, like he did, when that’s enough is the true sign of an artist: knowing how to manipulate your strengths. Almost compellingly.

Bowie is a glam boy? The guy has not done glam rock for 20 years and some of his biggest hits are outside his glam phase.

This bowie sting comparison is so false and contrived it’s almost laughable. There is no comeptition and there is no comparison.

Bowie is an ex-glam rocker, turned more post new wave rocker, turned adult contemporary.

Sting is bored with playing his previous styles and is trying something different.

They’re musicians, they change and move on.

Ramon | 10/17/2006, 2:40 am EST

Two words: ZIGGY STARDUST

That pompous English ass Sting will never get anywhere close to Bowie for that album alone. Enough said.

Alex | 10/17/2006, 2:41 am EST

In a music industry where trends and image are such a huge part wether or not something is succesful, it is a breath of fresh air to have an artist of sting’s stature continue to explore different styles and techniques. He could sit on his ass if he wanted, but he doesn’t. Good job, sting man!

Andrew | 10/17/2006, 2:49 am EST

Why compare Bowie and Sting? Totally different artists.

RH | 10/17/2006, 4:23 am EST

Sting Can play a serenade to Bowie and Iman on the Lute while Bowie eats dinner in his face. No comparison…King and a Pawn.

I’m not gay but I can tolerate David Bowie in woman’s underwear (Ziggy era) but in Dune Sting’s character’s thong has wings. MY EYES are still in pain! That guy needs to be taken down a notch. He stands way too long in front of the mirror before and after sex.

Hmmm . . . if you simply stack them up side by side, album for album, there Bowie makes Sting look like a piker. I mean, yes the man made Synchronicity . . . but does that really compare to the majesty of Ziggy Stardust? Or the aural tryptich that Low/Lodger/Heroes form? Don’t get me wrong, Sting old man: I own the Best Of and Ten Summoners Tales. On the other side of that coin, i own just about every Bowie album, because even when he misses he’s still pretty good. Also, when Bowie was making killer hits like “I’m Afraid of Americans,” Sting was selling “Desert Rose” to Jaguar. ‘Nuff said.

Anonymous | 10/17/2006, 2:15 pm EST

There’s certainly a difference between ‘overrated’ and ‘bad’ and I personally think Sting is one of the most overrated bassists in the history of music. Yes, he is very talented in terms of technique, but those songs all sound the same to me.

I can’t think of a single album the Police which was ‘awful’ but almost all of Sting’s solo efforts are just that – awful – because IMO on his own, his songs are usually so bland and they do all sound exactly alike to me. And just where did his reputation as a lyrical genius come from? I don’t get it. After the Police released ‘Synchronicity’ I saw them in concert and I certainly got my money’s worth. The Police rocked, but as a solo artist he’s quite the wanker.

Also the guy is apparently quite famously clueless when it comes to keeping track of own his money. 1995 found Sting preparing for a court appearance, against his former accountant who had misappropriated several million pounds of his money without Sting even knowing it had vanished for several years afterwards (much to the amusement of the press, at that time)

About the only nice thing I can think of to say about him is that Sting has been involved in environment-friendly functions since the 1980s. He and his wife, Trudie Styler, co-founded the Rainforest Foundation. The Foundation’s major initiative is to campaign globally for the protection of the lands of the Kayapo Indians in Brazilian Amazonia.

STING’S BEST OF AND THE DREAM OF THE BLUE TURTLES (HIS FIRST SOLO JIZZOINT) ARE PRETTY DAMN GOOD. MOST OF THE POLICE’S STUFF WAS STELLAR (EXCEPT DON’T STAND SO CLOSE TO ME “86″—WRETCHED) BUT MOST OF STING’S SOLO STUFF IS CACA.

dammo1 | 10/19/2006, 12:44 pm EST

stings a sting
bowie,s a blast ,cccchanges most iconic rock artist since god …

Adriean | 10/20/2006, 12:31 pm EST

Unfortunatley for Sting he will always be competing with his work from The Police. But in all honesty as a one time Sting fan, his work the past few years has become stale and mono-tone. Almost background music if you will. The man could do with a little re-birth like Bowie did with Tin Machine. Remember when their first video came out with Bowie sporting a black suit and beard. The man was all business then. THAT moment gave him the spark to pound out some great albums since then.

Dean | 10/20/2006, 1:02 pm EST

Stings new cd is a borefest. It is unlistenable.

Music is subjective, and we all have our own opinions. Mine- Bowie is the superior, more versatile artist, The Police were much greater than the solo Sting, Tin Machine sucked. At their prime?- Ziggy Stardust, The Police.

Dennis | 10/21/2006, 2:12 am EST

I love the new sting album. It’s not boring at all. It’s like being sucked into a good book. Doing something completely different that turns out this good deserves respect. There are better musicians out there and that’s not Bowie.

Loneshewolf | 10/23/2006, 5:25 am EST

I agree that Sting can’t hold a candle to David Bowie, but each one of them has a place of his own in show business, and just because you love Bowie it doesn’t mean you have to whip yourself into a frenzy over Sting. Live and let live.

rube | 10/25/2006, 3:53 pm EST

i misread that it’s an album of lute music, not flute music. i was at first confused, than greatly disapointed and now slightly embarassed. just as long as my older brother named dion doesn’t some how get this link and read this posted comment of mine that i’ve posted privatley on this site i should be “ok”.

filmempress | 10/31/2006, 12:54 am EST

Sting has an ego the size of Manhattan…he has run out of world rhythms to rape and pillage so now he has turned his attention to 400-year old music. Der Stingle thinks he can sing? Give me a break! The late, very great Jeff Buckley could sing!! Stingo is losing both his voice and his hair….in no particular order.
